Suncity Radio morning show team assists three visually impaired siblings

The host of Suncity Morning Drive on Sunyani based Suncity Radio, Mark Abisah, has appealed to the public to desist from any form of stigmatisation against people living with disability.

He said disability is part of humans, adding that anyone may temporarily or permanently experience some form of disability at some point in life.

“Let’s all be honest, as humans we may at a point in time of our lives suffer some form of temporal or permanent disability, so we need to shun stigmatising people living with disability”, he said.

The radio host made the appeal when the radio station presented GH¢2,600 to three visually impaired siblings in Sunyani for their upkeep and medical bills.

The morning show crew of Suncity Radio mobilized the amount from listeners.

This followed an interview with the mother of the siblings, Naomi Pomaa, who said her children – Sandra Aniniwaa, 24; Gloria Pomaa Yeboah, 17 and Lamford Acheampong Yeboah, 8 – lost their sight mysteriously after birth.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cliffmelvyn Company Limited, Mr. Prince Osei Kwadwo, and the CEO of Sikapa Farms, Mr. Fred Osei Asante, on behalf of the Morning Show team, presented the amount to Mrs. Pomaa during the morning show.

Mr. Abisah called on individuals, groups, NGOs and faith-based organisations to constantly assist the needy to survive.

“I appeal to individuals, groups, NGOs and faith-based organisations to put in place measures to constantly assist the needy in the society”, he said. He also called on members of the public willing to support the children to contact Suncity Radio in Sunyani.

Mother of the siblings, Naomi Pomaa, said “None of them was born blind but as they grew up, they lost their sight under strange circumstances and it’s a serious nightmare to us as their parents and it’s really devastating and traumatizing,” she told the radio station.

According to her, “The saddest development is that they have been diagnosed with diabetes, and this has made their conditions worse. Now when you talk to them, they can’t even hear properly.”

Meanwhile, the Bono Regional Director of the Department of Children, Mr. George Yaw Ankamah, promised to support the three siblings with free diabetes medication.

THANK YOU

Madam Pomaa thanked the management of Suncity Radio, the Suncity morning show team and all donors for their kind gesture, saying: “I have followed Suncity Radio for a long time and I’m not surprised that the station has been able to raise money to support me, I know of the good things they are doing to help people in need. I thank God and the station and all those who contributed. I ask that you remember us in your prayers.”

THE HABIT OF ENJOYING ADVERSITY

0
Dr. Joyce Rosalind Aryee, Executive Director, Salt and Light Ministries

“……so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body” – 2 Corinthians 4:10

INTRODUCTION

We have to develop godly habits to express what God’s grace has done in us.  It is not just a question of being saved from hell, but of being saved so that “the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.”  And it is adversity that makes us exhibit His life in our mortal flesh.  The only thing that will enable us to enjoy adversity is the acute sense of eagerness of allowing the life of the life of the Son of God to evidence itself in us.  No matter how difficult something maybe, we must say, “Lord, I am delighted to obey You in this.”

From our first day on earth until our last, we face different levels of adversity.  Adversity may be sickness, a property loss, or the loss of a family member.  It may be a lost career promotion or a business setback.  How we handle these adversities defines how we achieve greatness in our lives.

If God puts us into adversity, He is adequately sufficient to “supply all our needs” (Philippians 4:19).

Each of us will face trials and tests, and as in this simplistic example, it is how we react to those difficulties that will determine our success and happiness.

  1. The Apostle Paul taught an interesting lesson when the Saints in Rome were to face some of the most violent persecutions of any Christian era. Paul reminded the Saints that “……… in all things God works for the good of those who love Him” – Romans 8:28. Our Heavenly Father, who loves us completely and perfectly, permits us to have experiences that will allow us to develop the traits and attributes we need to become more and more Christlike. As we understand this doctrine, we gain greater assurance of our Father’s love. We may never know in this life why we face what we do, but we can feel confident that we can grow from the experience.

  1. Now, I realize that it is much easier to look back when a trial is over and see what we have learned from our experience, but the challenge is to gain that eternal perspective while we are going through our tests. To some, our trials may not seem great, but to each of us who are passing through these experiences, the trials are real and require us to humble ourselves before God and learn from Him.

  1. Sometimes we pass through pain and sorrow that we might grow and be prepared for potential trials in the future. This question goes to us mothers: “Would we ever do something that would cause pain and bring tears to our children when they have done nothing wrong?”Of course we would! When mothers take young children to the doctor to receive immunizations, almost every child leaves the doctor’s office in tears. Why do you do that? Because you know that a small amount of pain now will protect them from possible pain and suffering in the future. Our Father in Heaven knows the end from the beginning. We need to follow the example of the Saviour and trust in Him.

  1. When we are faced with trials, we must learn to not complain or murmur. We must always attempt to correct the problem and overcome the trial, but instead of asking “Why me?” or “What did I do to deserve this?” maybe the question should be “What am I to do? What can I learn from this experience? What am I to change?”

  1. When we face challenges, we must seek greater help from God. Even the Saviour of us all found a need to pray “more earnestly” as He was in the Garden of Gethsemane. We can learn to gain great faith if we do this. We must remember that often the answers from our Heavenly Father do not remove the trial from us, but instead He helps strengthen us as we pass through the experience. In our trials, let us not become bitter or uncommitted, but let us follow the Saviour’s example of becoming more earnest, more sincere, and more faithful.

  1. We must also learn to serve and think of others even in our times of trial. Christwas the epitome of service. His life was filled with examples of helping and serving others, and His greatest gift of all was what He did for us. We must repent and then follow His example of service. When we serve others, we forget our own problems, and by working to relieve the pain or discomfort of others, we strengthen ourselves.

  1. There is a tendency for the natural man to pass blame to someone else so as not to be accountable for his or her own actions. Sometimes we like to say, “If they had not done this, then I would not have reacted the way I did.” The Saviour looked at those who had nailed Him to the cross and pled with His Father in Heaven to “forgive them; for they know not what they do” – Luke 23:34.Can we not be more forgiving?

As we pass through the trials of life, let us keep an eternal perspective, let us not complain, let us become even more prayerful, let us serve others, and let us forgive one another. As we do this, “all things [will] work together for good to [us] that love God – Romans 8:28”. I bear a solemn and certain witness that our Father loves us and He sent His Son to show and pave the way for us. He suffered, He died, and He resurrected that we might live, and He desires that we “might have joy,” even in our trials of life.

Here are a few things to ponder over as we journey through adversity to greatness:

Many times we face adversities and say, “if only I can make it through this.”  It may be a sickness, loss of a loved one, job loss, etc.  By remaining focused, determined, and concentrating on the positive, many times we can become stronger.

Adversity develops unknown talents.  In this way, once the door of adversity closes one opportunity to us, the door of greatness often opens another.  When experiencing adversity, let’s ask ourselves, “what positive thing can come out of this?”  When adversitycomes, don’t avoid it; but attack it with all our resources.  The way we manage adversity will define who we are and make us ready for future opportunities because adversity can be our seed of greatness.

Finally, let’s keep our soul properly conditioned to manifest the life of the Son of God.  Never live on our memories of past experiences, but let the Word of God always be living and active in us.

Feature: A Deputy, an Insider or Trump? The race for US House Speaker

0
Donald Trump, Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise

Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise have become the first two Republicans to join the race to replace Kevin McCarthy, who was voted out as Speaker in an unprecedented move on Tuesday.

Other Republicans are also rumoured to be mounting a bid, and some have even floated Donald Trump as an option.

The Speaker can technically be anyone in the US.

Republicans plan to hold a speaker candidate forum next Tuesday, followed by a possible vote the next day.

Jim Jordan

Once a thorn in his party’s side, Mr Jordan is now one of the most powerful Republicans in Congress.

The firebrand from Ohio, currently serving his ninth term, is chairman of the influential House Judiciary Committee and a key member of the House Oversight Committee.

He has used that perch to lead the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden as well as other aggressive investigations of the administration.

But Mr Jordan, 59, was not always inside the inner sanctum in Washington.

The staunch conservative has angered Republicans in the past with his inclination for bomb-throwing rhetoric and divisive tactics.

He was founding chairman in 2015 of the House Freedom Caucus, a disruptive hard-line group one former Republican Speaker labelled “legislative terrorists”.

In the Trump years, however, Mr Jordan gained visibility within the Republican voter base as one of the then-president’s most avid defenders.

He previously ran for Speaker in 2018 and was also nominated earlier this year, but he vigorously defended Mr McCarthy both in January and on Tuesday.

In a letter formally requesting the support of colleagues on Wednesday, Mr Jordan wrote: “We are at a critical crossroad in our nation’s history.”

“We can focus on the changes that improve the country and unite us in offering real solutions. But no matter what we do, we must do it together as a conference.”

His bid has already received the backing of several prominent conservatives, with Matt Gaetz – the rebel who led the coup against Mr McCarthy – writing: “My mentor Jim Jordan would be great!”

But Mr Jordan’s past antics could see him struggle for the support of centrist Republicans.

And if he needs Democratic support, he will likely receive none. The party deplores his pro-Trump and anti-Biden stances, and he has already indicated he is “against” more US aid to Ukraine.

Steve Scalise

Mr Scalise, 57, has served as Mr McCarthy’s No. 2 since 2019 and his aspirations for the top job have long been an open secret in Washington.

Representing a suburban Louisiana district in the House since 2008, he is best known for surviving an assassination attempt in June 2017.

He was critically wounded by a bullet to the hip from an anti-Trump extremist who opened fire on Republican lawmakers practising for the annual congressional baseball charity match.

Mr Scalise returned to a standing ovation in Congress after more than three months of rehabilitation. He remains a strong proponent of gun rights.

In August, Mr Scalise said he had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare but treatable form of blood cancer.

“The task before us is not without its challenges, but I believe in this Conference and our ability to come together and achieve great things,” he said in a letter announcing his bid on Wednesday.

As a member of leadership, Mr Scalise has a more sophisticated political operation than Mr Jordan but faces similar struggles in winning support.

Kevin Hern

Kevin Hern, 61, is not as well-known as Mr Jordan or Mr Scalise but is said to be weighing a run for Speaker.

Mr Hern is a relative newcomer, first elected to the House in 2018 from Oklahoma.

He chairs the Republican Study Committee, a group with significant sway in promoting a conservative law-making agenda.

Born on an Air Force Base in Missouri, Mr Hern is a former aerospace engineer and McDonald’s franchisee, who owned 24 of the fast food chain’s restaurants in Oklahoma, according to his website.

Hard-liners in the House Freedom Caucus have reportedly pushed him to run for a leadership post, but his path to the 218 votes he needs to become Speaker remains unclear.

Donald Trump?

Holding the Speaker’s gavel instantly makes that person one of the most powerful people in Washington and second in the presidential line of succession.

But the US Constitution says little about who can fill the post, other than that the House “shall chuse [sic] their Speaker”.

Historians and legal experts broadly argue America’s founders likely assumed the person for the job would be drawn from among elected members.

But that hasn’t stopped several other names from coming up in races for Speaker.

In 2015, President Barack Obama joked with an audience that “Kanye [West] is thinking about running for Speaker of the House. It couldn’t get any stranger”.

Mr Trump’s name has come up in this Republican race for Speaker, with the backing of far-right Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene and others.

Speaking on Wednesday morning outside the New York court where he is facing a $250m civil fraud trial, the ex-president said “a lot of people” had been calling him about it.

But he appeared to turn down the offer, saying he was focused on winning the presidency next year.

Fantasy booking aside, Mr Trump has too many enemies in the Capitol and almost certainly could not win the votes to become Speaker.

Other potential successors

Following the vote to oust Mr McCarthy on Tuesday, Patrick McHenry was appointed to hold the gavel in the interim.

Mr McHenry, 47, has represented North Carolina in Congress since 2005 and currently chairs the House Financial Services Committee.

The bowtie-wearing lawmaker is a top loyalist to Mr McCarthy and a deal-maker who played a key negotiating role during House Republicans’ debt ceiling showdown with the White House.

Two members of Republican leadership – Tom Emmer and Elise Stefanik – have said they are not running for Speaker.

But as the third and fourth-highest ranking House members in their party, either could emerge as a contender if the contest is prolonged.

However, there is very real discontent among the House Republican conference at present, with many lawmakers demanding reforms.

Florida Congressman Carlos Gimenez has said he and other moderates will not vote for any Speaker who does not commit to a higher threshold for ousting them from power.

Under Mr McCarthy, Mr Gaetz alone was able to challenge and – with Democrats’ help – oust him as Speaker.

“We cannot continue to be governed this way,” Mr Gimenez told CNN on Tuesday.

Kurt Okraku retains GFA presidency after running unopposed

Kurt Okraku retains GFA presidency

Kurt Okraku has been re-elected as President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for a second term.

In a one-sided contest held at the Global Dream Hotel in Tamale in the Northern Region on October 5, 2023, Okraku secured his position with an overwhelming 117 YES votes, with only two NO votes and one person abstaining.

Okraku ran unopposed in the GFA elections, as his competitor, George Afriyie, was disqualified by both the Elections Committee and the Appeals Committee following a review process.

The former Chief Executive Officer of Dreams FC initially assumed office on October 25, 2019.

Despite the looming threat of an injunction notice, GFA executives decided to proceed with the electoral process.

Background

The GFA had scheduled its Congress in Tamale for September 27, 2023. However, King Faisal applied for an injunction, leading to the rescheduling of the assembly for early October.

King Faisal’s argument was that a valid Congress cannot take place to elect the President until new Executive Council (Exco) representatives are duly elected.

The club argued that opening nominations for the GFA President’s election before Exco elections are held is both improper and illegal.

Furthermore, King Faisal, based in Kumasi, sought a declaration that any resolutions passed by the current Exco regarding the GFA President’s election before Exco representatives are chosen constitute a breach of trust, confidence and loyalty.

Weekend European Leagues Fixtures & Preview

Inaki Williams leads Athletic Bilbao against Almeria today

Athletic Bilbao will be bidding to bounce back from their defeat in the Basque derby when they resume their La Liga campaign at home to Almeria on Friday night.

The Lions have made a solid start to their 2023-24 campaign, sitting sixth in the table on 14 points, but Almeria have struggled, with the visitors bottom of the division on three points from eight matches. Athletic were well-beaten in the Basque derby last weekend, conceding three unanswered goals to Real Sociedad.

Athletic Bilbao have made a solid start to the season, boasting a record of four wins, two draws and two defeats from eight matches to collect 14 points, which has left them in sixth position.

Athletic will now be bidding to enter the international break off the back of a victory, before returning to La Liga action away to the champions Barcelona on October 22.

Almeria have a talented squad, but it is really difficult to back them at the moment. The visitors will end their winless run at some stage, but it is highly unlikely to be in this match, and we are expecting Athletic to collect all three points in relatively comfortable fashion at San Mames.

Empoli, Udinese get this weekend Serie A underway on FridayEmpoli and Udinese get the Serie A weekend underway when they meet at the Stadio Carlo Castellani on Friday evening.

In what appears to be a potential early-season relegation six-pointer, both sides enter the fixture in the bottom four, which is starting to become cut adrift.

Sarmadzic, Udinese

Empoli have lost six of their first seven games in Serie A, and Udinese are still without a win, highlighting the importance of what a positive result could do for either side here. Those six defeats for Empoli have all come without scoring, as their solitary goal remains Tommaso Baldanzi‘s vital strike in a 1-0 victory over Salernitana late last month.

With games against Empoli next, and then Lecce and Monza after the international break, Udinese must move away from the drop zone before entering a daunting run of games in November.

Andrea Sottil‘s side travel to Bergamo to face Atalanta and the capital for a clash with Roma, while also welcoming AC Milan to the Dacia Arena – three games which look devilishly difficult on paper.

While still winless, Udinese have shown more mettle and attacking quality in recent weeks, and may take the three points in this bottom-of-the-table clash.

Lecce welcome Sassuolo to the Stadio Via del Maretonite

Early surprise package Lecce welcome Sassuolo to the Stadio Via del Mare in Serie A on Friday night. After a truly remarkable start for the hosts, tougher tests have since arrived and seen them drop down the standings, while Sassuolo continue to be heavily inconsistent.

Lecce players

Despite going down to Juventus and Napoli in the past week, those results do not detract from what has been a fantastic start to the Serie A season for Lecce.

Even though Lecce have lost their last two outings, they still enter the weekend in the European places after seven matches.

That again is in complete contrast to last season, when the Giallorossi won none of their opening six matches in Serie A.

Sassuolo have gone through another one of their runs which leaves both supporters and neutrals scratching their heads.

So often being the scourge of Italy’s biggest clubs, Sassuolo then frequently fail to beat sides below them in terms of resources and league position.

After losing 4-2 at newly-promoted Frosinone, Sassuolo caught fire and inflicted the same scoreline on Juventus a week later.

Sassuolo have never lost to Lecce in six previous meetings – winning on three occasions, including completing the double last season with two 1-0 wins.

Luton Town host Tottenham in Saturday’s early kickoff

Separated by 15 places and 13 points in the embryonic Premier League tableLuton Town host Tottenham Hotspur at Kenilworth Road in Saturday’s early kickoff, where the visitors can rise to the summit with victory.

Luton Town were subjected to a 2-1 beating at the hands of Burnley in midweek, while Spurs overcame Liverpool by the same scoreline thanks to an already-infamous VAR clanger.

Manor Solomon, Tottenham

The jury is still out over Tottenham’s title credentials, but the North London club have still scored at least twice in all of their Premier League games under coach Postecoglou, who leads Spurs out for their first competitive showdown with Luton since 1992, where the two sides played out a third successive 0-0 draw at Kenilworth Road.

While the last three meetings between Luton and Tottenham on the Hatters’ turf have ended without the net rippling once, Postecoglou’s goal-happy team should have little difficulty navigating their way past Edwards’s leaky backline.

Midweek fatigue and Bell’s injury should also play their part in a chastening afternoon for the hosts, as Tottenham temporarily rise to the top of the standings with another few goals in tow.

Kotoko’s Justice Blay returns from injury, ahead of clash with Accra Lions

0

Asante Kotoko have received a significant boost ahead of their upcoming match against Accra Lions on Monday, with the return of their star midfielder, Justice Blay, who had been sidelined due to injury.

Blay had been absent from the team’s last three matches in the Ghana Premier League, leaving a noticeable void in their midfield.

His injury had occurred during Asante Kotoko’s pre-season training, forcing him to spend time in the treatment room.

However, the highly-talented defensive midfielder has now recuperated and is set to make his comeback in Asante Kotoko’s league game against Accra Lions at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday.

Blay’s absence was keenly felt by Asante Kotoko in recent matches, as the team struggled to secure victories. They endured a string of three league matches without a win, managing draws against Heart of Lions and Karela United at home while suffering a defeat to Bibiani Goldstars at Dun’s Park in Bibiani.

With Justice Blay’s return, Asante Kotoko will be hoping to regain their winning form and secure a positive result against Accra Lions as they continue their Ghana Premier League campaign. Credit: ghanasoccernet.com

Hearts will bounce back against Dreams -Board Member Frank Nelson

0
Hearts of Oak team

Hearts of Oak Board Member Frank Nelson Nwokolo is confident the team will bounce back from their defeat to Boafoakwa Tano when they face Dreams FC in their next Ghana Premier League game.

The Phobians suffered their second defeat of the season as the Sunyani-based side stunned them at the Coronation Park last Saturday adding to their woes of unimpressive results on the road.

The 2020/21 champions are back in action against reigning FA Cup champions Dreams FC in their next game at the Accra Sports Stadium and are hoping to clinch another win in front of their fans.

Ahead of the game which comes off on Sunday, the Frank Nelson Nkwolo has expressed optimism in the team stating that they would do their best to record a better result.

“Don’t be disturbed. You will see a new situation at Hearts of Oak. I will urge the fans to support the club because things will get better,” he told Accra-based MAX FM.

“We all have to be patient. I am sure we will have a change of situation in our next match.”

Criminal Gangs Target Uber, Bolt Drivers …lure them to secluded places, kill and steal their cars

0
Michael Adzomani alia Major - one of the accused persons

Two young men between the ages of 25 and 32 years have been arraigned for allegedly killing a Bolt driver and stealing his car.

Michael Adzomani and Alfred Avornyo, the accused persons, have allegedly been plotting together with their accomplices to attack Bolt and Uber drivers, kill them, and then steal their cars, which they sell to the unsuspecting public.

Michael and Alfred appeared before the Kaneshie District Court on Monday charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and murder, and have been remanded into lawful custody. Their pleas were not taken, because it is a committal trial, in which the Magistrate will consider whether the prosecution has sufficient evidence to prosecute the case at the High Court.

Her Worship N.A.A. Owusu-Omenye, the Presiding Magistrate, adjourned the case to October 19, 2023, for continuation.

Inspector J. Asondek told the court that Michael, 23, and Alfred, 32, were both rider services’ drivers, and their latest victim is 36-year-old Kwame Henordzi. Before the untimely death of Kwame, he was in charge of blue coloured Toyota Vitz car used for rider services.

According to the prosecutor, the accused persons, together with their accomplices – Hartman Mensan alias Richie, Joshua aka General and another at large – allegedly operated a robbery gang within Accra and other parts of the country, targeting rider services drivers.

According to Mr. Asondek, for about three months now, the gang had killed many Bolt and Uber drivers, snatched their cars, re-sprayed and sold them.

He continued that on July 12, 2023, whilst the deceased, Thomas Kwame Henordzi, was working with his car within the Accra Metropolis, Michael and Alfred, the accused persons and their accomplices requested for a ride from Bolt Holdings Ghana Limited and the deceased was detailed to pick them.

The prosecutor said information gathered from Bolt Holdings office in Accra confirmed that the accused persons requested for a ride at Agbogba, a suburb of Accra, and their destination was Lincoln Avenue, Asikabiu near Nsawam.

The information indicated that at about 1:52pm on the same day, the deceased’s phone went offline from the Bolt’s online monitoring platform.

The suspects took the deceased to Bowkrom, a suburb of Nsawam, killed him, later dumped his body by the road side, and took away his car.

The body of the deceased was spotted by some people in the community and the Assembly Member for the area was informed.  He also reported the case to the Nsawam Police.

The police visited the scene and conveyed the body to the Police Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy. On July 25, 2023, ACP/Dr. Osei Owusu-Afriyie conducted a post mortem examination on the body and gave cause of death as: a. Asphyxiation, and b. Strangulation.

The accused persons were later arrested from their hideouts after a series of intelligence-led operations were conducted. He said the saloon car was retrieved from suspect Michael Adzormani.

Investigation further revealed that the accused persons and their accomplices have been involved in four other similar offences across the country, and which were under investigation at the Homicide Unit at the CID Headquarters. The court was told that efforts were underway to arrest the accused persons’ accomplices, and retrieve another Toyota Vitz saloon car sold to a buyer in Takrwa by Alfred Avornyo.

High Court throws out ECOBANK

0
Ecobank

The General Jurisdiction of the Accra High Court has dismissed a suit filed by ECOBANK Ghana Limited seeking to set aside a judgement of the Supreme Court.

The High Court, presided over by Her Ladyship Abena Amponsah Buans, dismissed the application on the grounds that the application was an abuse of the court’s process.

Justice Buans held in her ruling on September 2, 2023, that the pleadings being sought by Ecobank (plaintiff/respondent) against the defendant/application, Daniel Ofori, had expressly been dealt with by the apex court.

Meanwhile, the plaintiff/respondent in its amended writ of summons filed on June 13, 2023, was seeking a declaration that the judgment of the Supreme Court obtained by the defendant was void, having been obtained by fraud and acts of false pretences.

Law Courts Complex, Accra

Ecobank was also seeking a declaration that at all material times the suit was pending before the Superior Courts, the defendant herein was the owner of shares, which were in contention, as he had exercised ownership over the said shares till date.

Furthermore, the plaintiff/respondent was seeking an order setting aside the said impugned judgment of the Supreme Court as same was procured by fraud.

However, the judge stated: “I find that the claim before this Court as an abuse of the Court’s process. I, therefore, grant the application. I, hereby, strike out paragraphs 1 to 32 of the Plaintiff’s pleadings in the amended Statement of Claim filed on 13 June 2023, and further dismiss the suit.”

Accordingly, the court awarded cost of GH¢40,000.00 against the Ecobank in favour of Mr. Ofori.

Contention

The court held that a summary of the plaintiff’s case as stated in its amended statement of claim was that the Defendant herein instituted an action in the High Court titled “DANIEL OFORI VS. ECOBANK & 2 ORS” for the enforcement of shares sale between him and one Oppong-Bio.

It was stated that this transaction had the shares duly transferred into Oppong-Bio’s name, and was evident in the Register of Members of the Company.

Mr. Ofori also maintained that he had duly transferred his interest in the shares to Oppong-Bio, and was therefore, entitled to the funds that Ecobank had withheld.

The trial High Court entered judgment in favour of the defendants and dismissed the suit, having found that the transaction was not consummated and that the shares belonged to the defendant.

Mr. Ofori appealed the decision, maintaining that the shares transaction had not failed, but the appeal was not successful.

The Defendant proceeded to the Supreme Court, where his appeal was allowed, and the judgments of the High Court and Court of Appeal were set aside.

The Supreme Court agreed with the Defendant that at all material times, the Defendant had divested himself of the ownership of the shares and the trade was consummated and settled before the suspension.

Hitherto, Plaintiff also contended that inquiries on the status of the shares, from the Cal Bank on December 16, 2020, and January 13, 2021, revealed that the shares had always remained in the name of Mr. Ofori.

Ecobank further argued that Mr. Ofori had claimed and issued dividend warrants covering the period 2008 to 2020, and had further accepted bonus shares issued by Cal Bank in his name.

The bank, therefore, deemed the conduct of the defendant to amount to fraud, as he had pleaded in his amended writ of summons and statement of claim filed on May 7, 2009, that he had completely divested himself of the shares and yet claimed, accepted and received dividends and bonus shares in his name, in his capacity as owner of the shares.

The Defendant entered appearance and filed an application for an order striking out paragraphs 1 to 32 of the Plaintiff’s pleadings in the amended statement of claim and for a further order dismissing the suit under order 11 rule 18(1)(a) (b) and (d) of C.I. 47.

Mr. Ofori contended that the suit before the court does not disclose any reasonable cause of action against him, it is an abuse of court process, and frivolous and vexatious.

He added that the high court jurisdiction has been improperly invoked to question and declares the judgement of the superior court void.

Mr. Ofori said Ecobank’s plea of fraud and false pretences against had been dealt with by the Supreme Court.

Ecobank denied that the issue of fraud and defrauding by false pretences had been effectively considered by the Supreme Court. After analysing the arguments, the judge held plea of the defendant.

Akufo-Addo, Bagbin showcase Ghana

Speaker Bagbin (left) and President Akufo-Addo (right) in a hearty mood at the conference yesterday

The leaders of the Executive and Legislative Arms of Government, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Speaker of Parliament, Right Honourable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin have showcased Ghana to the admiration of all. They promoted the brand Ghana on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at the opening of the 66th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, ongoing in Accra.

President Akufo-Addo, the Guest Speaker, garnished his speech, which centered on security on the continent and the fundamental principles and values of the Commonwealth Charter, with a bit of accolades for Ghana.

He was delighted that after several decades of dedicated membership, Ghana was hosting the conference.

Welcoming guests by way of his opening address, President Akufo-Addo said: “For those of you coming from beyond our shores, especially members of parliaments of the Commonwealth, I extend a hearty ‘Akwaaba’, our word of welcome. Enjoy your stay amongst the people justifiably famed for their hospitality.”

Speaker Bagbin, on the other hand, divided his address into two parts, with the first part wetting the appetite of the participants from 56 Commonwealth nations, about the host country, Ghana.

“Distinguished participants, this is Ghana, the land of gold, inhabited by some of the hospitable descendants of the King of gold – the legendary wealthiest person that ever lived on earth, the great Emperor, King Mansa Musa, of the ancient Sudan Empire.

“Ghana now occupies the state of gold, being the highest producer and exporter of gold in the world. Ghana is the center of the world, where longitude zero meets latitude zero. The Greenwich Mean Time, which we always refer to as GMT, is calculated from this point in the territory of Ghana. Ghana is the home of the impossible. The oasis of peace and the model of democracy,” he remarked.

The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Alban Bagbin, who is the President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, called on member countries to take a deep introspection into the cause of the incessant reversal of the democratic process on the African continent.

Speaking on the theme of the conference: “The Commonwealth Charter; 10 Years On: Values and Principles for Parliaments to Uphold”, he explained that it was only when the reasons were well understood and the right signals were picked that adequate measures could be put in place to steer democracies on the continent far from instabilities.

He said, “Parliaments in this sub-region and in Africa in general should try to understand the reasons for the loss of trust and confidence in the leadership of democratic processes and institutions that have characterized the recent spate of military incursions into governance.”

The address of the former member of parliament for Nadowli/Kaleo, former minority and majority leader Alban Bagbin, preceded the speech of the former member of parliament of the Abuakwa constituency and later Abuakwa South, President Akufo-Addo.

JARA DANCE

In between the addresses of the two, was a cultural display by the Ghana Dance Ensemble, which treated the visitors to a dance from the north called Jara. The co-moderator of the ceremony, Alhassan Suhuyini, told the gathering that according to folklore, the dance was discovered when hunters went to the bush to hunt in the middle of the night, and came across dwarfs who performed the jara dance. And when the hunters returned to the house the next day, they taught the community people the new dance.

HEGEMONIC ACTS

President Akufo-Addo called on the participants to promote peace and find an end to conflict on the basis of acceptable, established principles.

He described “hegemonic” acts by bigger nations that seek to subject the will of smaller nations to those of their bigger and stronger neighbours.

Amidst resounding applause in recognition of the unanimous condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, he called on all “to promote peace between the two nations and find an end to the conflict on the basis of acceptable, established principles of international law,” adding that “it is in everybody’s interest that this is done.”

He was hopeful that the 7-day conference would provide a solid platform for reflection on past achievements, engage in thoughtful discussions about present challenges and chart a course towards realising the hopes and aspirations of citizens under the noble goals of the Charter.

President Akufo-Addo was given the position of vice patron of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, which he accepted.
