The man was arrested but later released

Police in Spain arrested a man on suspicion of sexual assault after he appeared to touch a TV journalist on the bottom as she was reporting live from the streets of Madrid.

The man approached Isa Balado, a journalist for the “En boca de todos” program on Spain’s Cuatro channel, as she was reporting on an alleged robbery on Tuesday.

The man can be seen approaching her and then appearing to touch her bottom as she’s talking to presenter Nacho Abad in the studio.

Balado tried to continue with her piece to camera, but Abad asked her if the man had just touched her bottom.

When Balado said he did, Abad asked her to put “this stupid guy” on camera.

The camera then zooms out to show Balado and the man.

“Do you really need to touch my bum?” she asked, before telling him that she’s live on television. “I’d like you to let me work.”

Luis Rubiales has stepped down from his post as president of the Spanish soccer federation following weeks of backlash.

He continued to talk to her, before reaching his hand out to rub her on the head and then eventually walking away.

Balado then continued with the rest of her report.

US President Joe Biden’s son Hunter hit with criminal firearms charges

US President Joe Biden’s son Hunter has been charged with three criminal counts related to firearms possession, a United States court document showed.

In Thursday’s indictment, prosecutors accused Hunter of making false statements related to drug use in order to acquire a firearm in 2018.

The indictment, which was brought by US Special Counsel David Weiss in federal court in Delaware, comes after a deal for Hunter to plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges and enroll in a programme to avoid prosecution on a gun-related charge collapsed in July.

A White House spokesman referred questions on Thursday to the US Department of Justice and Hunter’s legal team, saying the charges stem from an independent investigation.

The case will no doubt play an outsized role in the 2024 US presidential campaign as Biden seeks re-election in a likely rematch with his Republican predecessor, Donald Trump, who leads the GOP’s nomination race.

It also comes just days after Republicans announced they would open an impeachment inquiry into the Democratic president – in large part over his son’s business dealings.

For years, Hunter has been the focus of attacks by Trump and his Republican allies, who have accused him of wrongdoing relating to Ukraine and China, among other issues.

‘An unimaginable scene’: Survivors describe Libya floods

The first sign that something was wrong was the sound of the dogs barking.

It was 2.30am and dark outside. When Husam Abdelgawi, a 31-year-old accountant in the Libyan city of Derna, got up and went sleepily downstairs to check on them, he felt water under his feet.

Husam opened the front door of the house he shared with his younger brother, Ibrahim. More water flooded in, pulling the door off of its hinges.

The brothers ran to the back door, where they were met by a “ghastly, unimaginable scene, worse than death itself to witness”, Husam said, in a phone interview from the city of Al-Qubbah.

“The bodies of women and children were floating past us. Cars and entire houses were caught up in the current. Some of the bodies were swept by the water into our house.”

The water swept Husam and Ibrahim up too, carrying them farther and faster than they imagined possible. Within seconds, they were 150m apart.

Ibrahim, 28, managed to grab on to floating power cables still tethered to their poles and grapple himself back towards where Husam was stuck. The brothers used the cables like ropes to pull themselves towards a nearby building and through a third-floor window, and from there they made it to a fifth-floor rooftop where they could wait out the flood.

“The area where we were was a higher part of the city,” Husam said. “In the lower parts, I don’t think anyone on the fifth or sixth floors has survived. I think they are all dead. May God have mercy on their souls.”

CSIR-FORIG calls for partnership with gov’t to conserve threatened tree spices

Professor Daniel A. Ofori, Director CSIR-FORIG

The CSIR-Forestry Research Institute of Ghana has called on the government, through the Forestry Commission, to consider partnering the Institute to conserve threatened tree species to improve sustainability.

Professor Daniel A. Ofori, Director CSIR-Forestry Research Institute of Ghana, who made the call at a day’s project inception and conservation workshop at Fumesua, Kumasi, explained that, the inception workshop marked the starting point of the coordination role of CSIR-FORIG on the conservation of threatened tree species in the country.

Participating stakeholders at the workshop

According to him, the role of CSIR-FORIG was to assist the government in the formulation of science and technology policies for the realisation of its developmental objectives, to develop, package, and disseminate science and technology information.

He stated that, the CSIR research programmes covered a wide range of activities in the areas that included Industry, Agriculture, Forestry, Environment, Health, Natural and Social Science, hence, the importance to collaborate with the government, through Forestry Commission.

Prof. Ofori explained that, the role of CSIR-FORIG towards those areas was to encourage the co-ordinated employment of scientific research for the management, utilisation and conservation of the natural resources of Ghana in the interest of development.

He noted that to be able to achieve this, it undertakes demand-driven research, build capacity and promote the application of technologies for sustainable management of forest resources for the benefit of society.

Dr. Samuel Ayensu, from the Resource Management Support Centre, indicated that Ghana had a rich stock of diverse natural resources such as forests, water bodies, minerals, plants and animals, and as a developing economy, much of the population depends on the country’s natural resources base for livelihoods.

According to him, the Ghana Living Standards Survey Round 6 (GLSS6) estimated that biodiversity products provided alternative income sources to over six million Ghanaians in the forestry and water sectors.

He noted that forests were important sources of ecosystem goods and services across Ghana, and most of the rural population (2.5 million people) depended on the forests for their livelihood or for the provision of food, clothing, shelter, furniture, potable water and Bush meat.

According to him, despite its contribution to Ghana’s economy, the status of biodiversity is under threat as the condition of Ghana’s forests has been in decline for many years.

He stated that many forest reserves are heavily encroached and degraded and the off- reserve stocks are being rapidly depleted, saying by and large, the problem is one of gradual degradation rather than deforestation, and is incremental rather than dramatic, with no single dominant driver.

He disclosed that, in Ghana, an extensive forest estate, consisting of 1.6 million hectares of Forest reserves was gazetted in the High Forest Zone (HFZ) in the 1920s, at the time there were large areas of forests outside these gazetted forest reserves across the country.

He stressed that, over the period, significant portions of these forests have been lost or degraded and that the trend of the forest loss poses a significant threat to the livelihoods of forest fringe communities as well as ecosystem services and functionality that support Ghana’s predominantly agrarian economy.

Mr. James Amponsah, Project Manager, also expressed worry over loss of some tree species, and said five tree species have currently been identified to be under threat because of expansion of agriculture and over cultivation.

He called on the government, through Forestry Commission and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and other groups and the private sector to put pragmatic measures to save the situation in order not to lose most of the tree species especially those under threat.

LIVING BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

0
Dr. Joyce Rosalind Aryee, Executive Director, Salt and Light Ministries

INTRODUCTION

The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Trinity. We have to realize when we are talking about the Holy Spirit we are not talking about an it or a thing, but about a person. The Holy Spirit thinks, wills, and feels. He is an intelligent individual who teaches and guides us. The Holy Spirit inspired the Bible. He illuminates our minds to understand the Word as we read or hear it, and helps us apply it to our lives.

The Power of the Holy Spirt

Can the Holy Spirit help us do more than is otherwise humanly possible? Yes, that’s why He came. It is humanly impossible to live the Christian life. But the Holy Spirit gives us the power to do it.

  • He helps us pray. (Romans 8:26)
  • He helps us witness for Christ and know what to say. (Mark 13:11)
  • He helps us love. (Galatians 5:22)
  • He helps us do what is right. (1 John 2:27)

To mention a few.

Tasks of the Holy Spirit

In John 16:13, Jesus defines the specific tasks that the Holy Spirit will do.

“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come” – John 16:13

  1. THE FIRST TASK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS TEACHING.One of His major tasks is to guide Christians into all truth by reminding us of the things Christ has said. This guidance is personal and developmental in each of our lives. The Holy Spirit is vitally involved in our growth process; He teaches us the truth so we can live out this truth.
  2. THE SECOND TASK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS CONVICTING. “When He [the Holy Spirit] comes, He will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgement” – John 16:8. Jesus goes on to explain in more detail. The Holy Spirit will convict of guilt “in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me [Jesus Christ] – John 16:9. The Holy Spirit is the goad, the spiritual conscience, bringing sin to conscious awareness.

The Holy Spirit will also convict of guilt “in regard to righteousness, because I [Jesus] am going to be the Father, where you can see me no longer” – John 16:10. This is the positive side of the task, constantly convicting us that, righteousness is always reflected in the person of Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit convicts of guilt “in regard to judgement, because the Prince of this world now stands condemned” – John 16:11. The Holy Spirit keeps before us the fact that the world and all its works are under God’s judgement. This does not excuse us from doing God’s work in the world; we work to redeem, but we must not take ourselves too seriously, because the salvation of the world is not exclusively in our hands. We work, but always under the control of the Holy Spirit.

  1. THE THIRD TASK IS THE HOLY SPIRIT“will tell you what is yet to come” – John 16:13. Besides being the Teacherand the Convictor, the Holy Spirit is also the Futurist, showing us the big picture and long-term will of God. When the Lord spoke through the prophet Jeremiah to the exiles in Babylon, He said, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11.

Steps to Being Filled with the Holy Spirit

Once we come to know Christ personally, and He takes up His presence within us, how can we be sure we are filled with the Holy Spirit? Here are four helpful steps:

  1. Let’s desire to be filled with the Holy Spirit.Jesus said that “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled” – Matthew 5:6. We must desire to be controlled or empowered by the Holy Spirit.
  2. 2. Let’s not allow unconfessed sin to remain in our lives. In 1 John 1:9we read, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” – past, present and future. By faith we can thank God that He has forgiven us our sins.
  3. Let’s ask the Holy Spirit to fill us. This is a request God will honour, because it is according to His will. In 1 John 5:14,15we find this promise: If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
  4. Let’s thank God for filling us with the Holy Spirit. Then walk by faith, moment by moment, thanking Him that we have been filled.

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, I need you. I acknowledge that I have been in control of my life, that I have sinned against you; and I thank you that you have forgiven my sins through Christ’s death on the cross. Fill me with the Holy Spirit as you have commanded me to be filled, and as you promised in your Word that you would do if I asked in faith. I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ. As an expression of my faith, I now thank you for taking control of my life and filling me with the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Inter, AC Milan face-off in Derby della Madonnina

0
Inter Milan vs AC Milan

The San Siro forms the backdrop for the latest edition of the famous Derby della Madonnina as Inter Milan and AC Milan lock horns as Serie A joint-pacesetters on Saturday.

Both sides have enjoyed a stellar start to the 2023/24 campaign, winning all three league matches – a feat they last achieved in the same season in 1971/72 when each ominously failed to win the Scudetto.

Simone Inzaghi’s side head into this new chapter of the long-standing Milan rivalry buzzing from a 4-0 humbling of Fiorentina on the stroke of September’s international break.

Inter are the likeliest candidates, alongside Milan, to dethrone Napoli in our 2023/24 Serie A season, and they’ve repaid our trust thus far. We expect an evenly-contested battle in the middle of the park that would likely lead to a draw.

Barca to make it four victories in a row, as they welcome Real Betis

0
Lewandoski, Barcelona

Barcelona will be bidding to make it four La Liga victories in a row when they welcome Real Betis to Camp Nou on Saturday evening in one of the standout matches in game week five.

The reigning champions have picked up 10 points from their opening four matches of the season to sit in third position in the table, while Real Betis are seventh, boasting seven points from their first four games.

Barcelona made an underwhelming start to the new La Liga season, playing out a goalless draw with Getafe, but they have since posted three straight wins over Cadiz, Villarreal and Osasuna.

Barcelona signed Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix and the pair will be looking to contribute to another successful campaign for the club. Real Betis, meanwhile, will enter this contest off the back of a 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano.

This match has the potential to be a very tricky match for Barcelona, and we would not be surprised to see a draw on Saturday.

Under-pressure Manchester United host buoyant Brighton

0
Onana, Manchester United

Seeking to climb into the top half of the Premier League tableManchester United play host to Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

While the Red Devils are languishing in 11th place at this early stage of the campaign, the Seagulls are sitting in the top six and just three points behind leaders Manchester City.

While Man United’s form on the pitch has left a little to be desired, off-field issues involving AntonyJadon Sancho and the club’s drawn-out ownership saga have since followed during the international break.

Before taking on German juggernauts Bayern Munich in their opening Champions League group-stage match next Wednesday, Man United must shift their focus to Saturday’s challenging Premier League contest with Brighton.

A closely-fought contest between an under-pressure Man United side and buoyant Brighton outfit is set to take place this weekend, and it is difficult to predict a favourite for this fascinating match-up.

Mahama Is Deceiving Cocoa Farmers!  … They have not been short-changed in the new producer price –NPP

0
Mr Richard Ayiagbah addressing the media yesterday

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has debunked claims by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by its flagbearer, Mr John Dramani Mahama, that the Government has short-changed cocoa farmers by failing to pay them the right producer price.

According to the Party, these claims by the National Democratic Congress are false and cannot be supported by actual events on the grounds, but rather only for political expediency.

Addressing a news conference in Accra yesterday, the Director of Communications of the NPP, Mr Richard Ahiagbah said the Producer Price of Cocoa had gone up by 63.5%, from GH¢12,800 per metric tonne (GH¢800.00 per bag) to GH¢20,943 or $1,821 per metric tonne, equivalent to GH¢1,308 per bag.

According to him, the new producer price, which was announced by President Akufo-Addo recently, was greeted with widespread gratification by the entire cocoa community in Ghana.

The party reinstated that all stakeholders in the cocoa industry, including Farmers and The Ghana Civil-Society Cocoa Platform (GCCP), have all expressed joy and satisfaction at the new price and have commended the government for staying true to its words.

“Ghana’s new producer price of cocoa is the highest in 50 years, among the West African sub-regional cocoa-producing countries”, Ahiagbah contended.

To the NPP, the calculations were based on the achieved Free-On-Board (FoB) Price of $2,600 per tonne from the forward sales of cocoa, with an exchange rate of GH₵11.50 to a dollar.

Benefits of the Producer Price Increase

They said the cocoa farmers will receive a higher price for their cocoa beans, increasing their income, while farmers can use the extra income to improve their living standards, invest in their farms and meet other financial needs.

“A higher producer price motivates existing cocoa farmers to continue cocoa cultivation and encourage others to enter the industry, which can contribute to the sustainability of the cocoa sector,” he said.

The rise in the Producer Price of cocoa, Mr Ahiagbah indicated, was poised to create employment prospects for young individuals in agriculture, engaging them as laborers in tasks like planting, harvesting and cocoa farm maintenance, “with the potential for more significant income, youths will be motivated to pursue cocoa farming as a viable and legal alternative to other often illicit endeavours, like Galamsey”.

Impact of CSSVD on Production

The party rather blamed the NDC on the decline in yields. “The decision by the then management to suspend the treatment of the Cocoa Swollen Shoot Viral Disease (CSSVD), resulting in many cocoa farms being attacked by the viral disease, is the root cause of Ghana’s decline in production.

“It would be recalled, as a result of the NDC government’s decision to withdraw support to farmers in treating the CSSVD in the Western Region, and as a result that action yields dropped significantly from 346,000 metric tons to below 140,000 metric tons”, he told the media.

According to him, the management of COCOBOD, through the support of the Government led by President Akufo Addo, has been able to restore most of these farms, which were plagued by diseases under the NDC, through the Cocoa Rehabilitation Program.

These farms, according to the party, are expected to yield positive results in the next few years and help increase Ghana’s production capacity and other social interventions are also currently being implemented for the benefit of cocoa farmers in the country.

Highest Ever Production

The party further stated that despite the challenges they met, their administration (NPP) recorded its highest-ever production of one million and forty-five thousand five hundred metric tonnes (1,045,500) in the 2020/21 Crop Season.

“It is, therefore, not accurate when the NDC claims that the NPP have a poor track record in cocoa production. In fact, in their case in 2009, when the country recorded a million tonnes, it was due to the ripple effects of the interventions introduced by the then NPP administration under President John Agyekum Kufuor”, he said.

Other Cocoa Sector Interventions

The NPP noted that no other cocoa-producer country supports formers with interventions, like the Cocoa Rehabilitation Program, Mass Pruning, Hand Pollination, Mass Spraying, Fertilizer Subsidy Program and Free Seedlings, as is the case in Ghana.

Furthermore, they revealed that over 30,000 Ghanaians have been employed in cocoa-producing communities, who are rehabilitating and restoring affected cocoa farms.
