2023 polls: You didn’t even come second -Soyinka to Peter Obi

Prof. Wole Soyinka

Literary icon, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has categorically said that Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP, did not win the 2023 presidential election as he is claiming.

According to Soyinka, Obi only came third in the election, not even second.

DAILY POST recalls that the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, PEPT, on Wednesday, upheld the victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, but his challengers have vowed to proceed to the Supreme Court.

Tinubu’s victory was challenged by Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who came second in the election, and third-placed Peter Obi of the Labour Party.

While Peter Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State is claiming to have won the polls, Soyinka said the former governor did not even finish second.

“In the recent election, two things happened first of all. One party took over the Labour movement which is one of my favourite movements also,” he said in a viral interview on X.

“Then it became a regional party… whereas it was a marvellous bridge into the established two camps. Peter Obi achieved something remarkable there that he broke that mold. Yes.

“But, however, he did not win that election. I was in a monitoring organisation. I can say categorically that Peter Obi’s party came third not even second and the leadership knew it. But they want to do what we call in Yoruba ‘gbajue’, that is force of lies…’

“They’re going to send some of the hardliners, crowds, young people to the streets to demonstrate. I’m always ready to be part of such demonstrations but only on the banner of truth.”

Senate denies alleged disbursement of N100m to lawmakers

Senate House

The Senate has denied the alleged disbursement of N100 million to lawmakers. Senator Yemi Adaramodu, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, denied the allegation in a statement in Abuja on Thursday.

He described a statement credited to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which alleged that the sum was paid to the lawmakers, as strange, ludicrous and unthinkable.

”What do these negative characters want to gain from their lies and falsehood against the National Assembly? This is strange to us, very ludicrous and unthinkable.

“There is no N100 million for a legislator anywhere, from which budget is this coming from? How, where and when? this is another satanic ploy of a miserable gang of media and political dark angels, to bring the Nigerian parliament into disrepute and pitch the legislators against the Nigerian public.

“We believe that the public is aware that popular democracy is an anathema to some unpatriotic political mercenaries, hence their systemic blackmail of the parliament, which undoubtedly is the soul of democracy and sovereignty,” Adaramodu said.

He urged the public and especially, the Nigerian workers, to disregard the allegation. The Senator added, “The National Assembly shall not hesitate, henceforth to take constitutional and legal actions against irreverent merchants of rumours and ill wills against legislators.

“If the Congress wishes to serve as the conscience of Nigerian workers, it must purge itself of political comments that can truncate our democracy. We believe that Nigerians see this new unscrupulous advocacy as a comedy to entertain only the unsuspecting.”

Western North cocoa farmers welcome new producer price

0

Some cocoa farmers within the Western North Region have commended the government and Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) for the recent record increase in the producer price of cocoa.

Speaking at a press conference in Sefwi-Bekwai, Nana Kwame Obiyeden, the Sefwi-Bekwai District Chief Farmer, on behalf of the cocoa farmers said, they welcomed the new producer price and commended the government and COCOBOD for the initiative.

He said he had never seen such a price increase in his 30 years as a cocoa farmer and lauded the cocoa rehabilitation and pruning programme introduced by COCOBOD, which he noted, was yielding positive results in the area.

He acknowledged the efforts by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and COCOBOD, for the present achievement for cocoa farmers, saying “we are happy for the new producer price of cocoa.”

Nana Obiyeden asked farmers, especially those whose cocoa trees were cut because of the rehabilitation exercise, to be motivated by the new price and continue to maintain their farms since there might be a higher price in the next season.

He also advised the teeming youth to go into cocoa production and avoid partisan politics to have a secure future.

“We are cocoa farmers and every government that will increase cocoa price and make farming attractive will be commended,” he said.

Mr. Kwasi Jaison Surano, another Chief Farmer, expressed satisfaction of the new price and was optimistic that it would discourage farmers and others involved in the cocoa smuggling chain to neighboring Ivory Coast to stop.

He was hopeful that COCOBOD would meet its target, as the new price would motivate cocoa farmers to work harder.

Madam Veronica Mintah, a member of the Youth in Cocoa farming, thanked the government and COCOBOD for what they had done for cocoa farmers and appealed for increased support for the youth who were willing to go into cocoa farming.

She said that would help to sustain cocoa production in the country and advised farmers to take farming as a serious business and invest in it.

In a related development, Mr Bismark Fuakyie, the 2022 National best cocoa farmer, who hails from Sefwi-Asafo in the Wiawso Municipality of the Western North Region in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the new price was the highest producer price ever in the history of Ghana.

He said he believed that the present price would help reduce the practice of smuggling of cocoa beans in the Western North Region, which shared boundaries with Ivory Coast.

Reggie Zippy displays new lover on social media

Following an announcement of divorce from his wife one month ago, Reggie Zippy has shared pictures of him and a new lover.

The UK-based Ghanaian rapper shared two separate romantic pictures of him and his white girlfriend, displaying affection.

In one of the pictures, the lady’s arms were wrapped around Reggie’s neck and he grabbed her butt.

The other one captures them in a tight embrace with her face buried in his.

Reggie indicated in the caption that he has moved on while emphasizing that he has no time to waste.

“Time no dey for a single and ambitious good man with sweet love and happiness to share with the right woman who knows his worth and vice versa. #LoveGoesWhereLoveIs #wemove #MyGirl #DanceForMe #LivingLifeOnMyOwnTerms #RespectYourMan #loveyourwoman,” he wrote.

This post, however, has garnered massive reactions amidst shock and disappointment from some netizens.

Others have also respected his decision and wished him well.

Infidelity and other reasons Reggie Zippy’s wife filed for a divorce.

Reggie Zippy’s ex-wife, Edith Ward, said she filed for the divorce based on infidelity, lies, alcohol, and financial abuse, among others.

She expressed that for the past two to three years, Reggie had been involved in an extramarital affair with a certain white lady.

She also stated that Reggie had stopped fulfilling his financial obligations to his family, a situation which compelled her to work around the clock just to make ends meet.

“I walked away and filed for divorce after you betrayed and walked away from our covenant (marriage). Lies, deceit, constant cheating, years of alcohol, and financial abuse made me work day and night to save my family.

My love, care, and patience still weren’t enough for you to stop it all, so I decided to save myself and my children from hell. I walked away and never looked back. Now continue to live happily with the ‘white’ (as you like to brag to me) woman you have been with for the past 2-3 years, while still married.

“Start providing for your kids financially and stop creating this false narrative online to make me look bad. I have tried to be the bigger person for a long time and have kept quiet. Now I have had enough too and hope that you can put a stop to this constant emotional abuse. #Truthalwaysprevails#Enoughisenough.”

I make more money from wedding gigs than big concerts – Akwaboah

Akwaboah

Highlife Artiste Akwaboah has revealed that he makes more money from performances at wedding than big concerts.

“I perform more at weddings than other big concerts. Sometimes, I am able to perform for more than 3 weddings in a day and you perform maximum 4 songs and get paid twice the amount of other musical concerts.”

“For instance, when I get the multiple bookings for weddings, I ask to be sure of the time of performance and schedule them accordingly; I will perform for this person at 2pm and another at 4pm and they are paying good money for 3 or 4 songs” Akwaboah revealed.

“Music business is more spiritual so once you pay more attention to it and focus on it, it will go well for you so for me, I am not moved by the big concerts across the world, I am doing my best in my area of expertise,” Akwaboahadded in an interview with Sammy Flex on CTV.

Touching on the Nigeria-Ghana comparisons, Akwaboah said; “how can you compare Nigeria with over 250 million population to Ghana? Lagos State alone is bigger in population than Ghana. So, it was more of how I will be relevant in years to come and not filling spaces. That is more important to me than those discussions of filling here or there.”

Embracing social media is the way to promote ministry now – Mrs. Amy Newman

0
Mrs Amy Newman

Veteran gospel Artiste, Mrs. Amy Newman has mentioned that an Artiste cannot do away with social media in today’s music world.

Discussing how social media has been beneficial to her ministry in recent times, the ‘Okamafo Jesus’ hitmaker mentioned that; “, “I sometimes get calls from people all over the world about what they saw on my social media pages. I am sometimes surprised how they got to know but that is the power of social media now. You do something now and it’s all over in the next minute. Things have changed now and social media is one place an Artiste cannot do away with.”

Talking about managing her social media pages, she said; “To be honest I am not the one who is managing my social media. I have my sons in faith who came to me that they want to help my ministry by managing my social media for me.”

“These are people I did not know before. They told me that they have been following my ministry since they were children and felt this is what they want to help my ministry with, so they manage the pages for me” Mrs. Amy Newman said.

Comparing the promotion of songs in the 1990s when she first came up in the industry, Mrs. Amy Newman said “now you get to see who is following you and those who are following you too on social media. Unlike before, now get to see it. Per the statistics from my social media, I am followed more by people in Accra. I am followed more by people in Accra and Takoradi follows before Kumasi.”

“This is the advantage you get with social media so I think it has come to help the ministry more than before” Mrs. Amy Newman mentioned in an interview on Skyy Power’s OC Showbiz Review.

Promoting her new single ‘Makoma Ahye ma,’ Mrs. Amy Newman entreated her followers to stream her songs more on Youtube with the name, ‘Amy Newman.’

UN’s Sudan envoy resigns, warns of full civil war

0
Volker Perthes

The UN envoy to Sudan, Volker Perthes, has announced that he’s resigning.

He told the UN Security Council that the Sudan conflict which erupted between rival military factions in April risked becoming a full-blown civil war.

It comes more than three months after Sudan declared him unwelcome after the war erupted.

Five million people have been displaced in the clashes between the Sudanese armed forces and the rival paramilitary forces, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

In his final speech to the Security Council, Mr Perthes was extremely critical of Sudan’s military ruler, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the RSF chief Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo better known as Hemedti.

Mr Perthes said the two leaders chose to plunge the country into a war that is leaving a tragic legacy of human rights abuses. He blamed the RSF for the sexual violence, looting and killings in areas it controls.

He also condemned the Sudanese armed forces for the indiscriminate aerial bombings.

As he was speaking medics in the city of Nyala in Darfur were dealing with the aftermath of yet another atrocity. Forty people died there in air strikes, adding to the more than 50 people who were killed on Sunday.

The RSF fighters are embedded in densely populated urban areas and the Sudanese military appears to view these areas as legitimate targets.
