Bayern,  Manchester United lock horns at the Allianz Arena

European juggernauts Bayern Munich and Manchester United lock horns at the Allianz Arena for their opening Group A fixture in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Boasting nine European crowns between them, the two teams last met in a competitive fixture nine years ago when Bayern ran out 3-1 winners in a quarter-final second-leg tie, while they last faced each other in the group stage back in 2001.

Bayern themselves have never lost at home to the Red Devils, though, winning three and drawing two, and Tuchel’s men will be confident of progressing to the Champions League knockout rounds for the 16th successive year considering that they are strong favourites to secure top spot in Group A ahead of Man United, Galatasaray and Copenhagen.

Following a difficult week off the pitch, Man United boss Erik ten Hag was hoping to lift the atmosphere at Old Trafford with a positive result and performance from his players last weekend, but the Dutchman has instead been left with plenty to ponder after his side were booed off in a disappointing 3-1 home defeat to Brighton.

Red Devils supporters will certainly reminisce about the historic 1999 final triumph over the German club under former boss Sir Alex Ferguson; one of just two wins against the Bundesliga side in Europe’s most prestigious club competition.

Arsenal welcome PSV Eindhoven to the Emirates Stadium

Stepping out to the Champions League anthem for the first time in six-and-a-half years, Arsenal welcome PSV Eindhoven to the Emirates Stadium for Wednesday’s Group B opener. Mikel Arteta‘s men punched their ticket to Europe’s elite competition via a second-placed finish in the 2022-23 Premier League.

Declan Rice, Arsenal

Arsenal have not dazzled on the attacking front so far this term, but Leandro Trossard provided the necessary spark to secure a 1-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park.

Arsenal are without a trio of known absentees in Thomas Partey (groin), Jurrien Timber and Mohamed Elneny (both knee), Arsenal suffered another untimely blow at the weekend, as Gabriel Martinelli tweaked his hamstring while running through to score a goal which was ultimately disallowed.

In strikingly similar fashion, PSV were also dealt a concern with one of their key attackers at the weekend, as winger Noa Lang was forced off the field 11 minutes into the second half against NEC but has boarded the plane for the trip to England.Credit: Arsenal’s continued defensive shortcomings means that Arteta’s men may still have to fight fire with fire, but the Gunners should rise to the occasion and begin Group B with a maximum haul, especially with an array of talent ready to make a difference off the bench.

Inter Milan travel away to take on Real Sociedad

Inter Milan will travel to the Reale Arena on Wednesday to take on Real Sociedad.

The visitors reached the final of last season’s competition, before just falling short against Manchester City, while their hosts enter Europe’s premier tournament for the first time in 10 years. After 10 years away from Europe’s top competition, Real Sociedad earned a place in the Champions League group stage this season thanks to their fourth-placed finish in La Liga.

Thuram, Inter Milan

Real Sociedad meet an Inter Milan side who head into the new Champions League campaign having fallen at the final hurdle in their bid to win the continental title for the fourth time and their first since 2010 last season.

Real Sociedad are unable to call on attacker Carlos Fernandez, who will serve a continental suspension after being sent off in last season’s Europa League defeat to Roma, while summer signing Andre Silva is sidelined by injury alongside Martin Merquelanz. Inter Milan come into Wednesday’s trip with a clean bill of health, and Inzaghi may look to deploy an unchanged starting XI from their thrashing of AC Milan at the weekend.

Wednesday’s game should certainly be close and intriguing, and Real Sociedad will be keen to mark their return to the Champions League with a positive home result, but the visitors do possess more quality and experience on the continental stage and we fancy them to take all three points in the opener.

Real Madrid to maintain perfect start as they host Union Berlin

Real Madrid will be bidding to make it six straight wins in all competitions at the start of the 2023-24 campaign when they welcome Union Berlin in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Los Blancos will enter the contest off the back of a 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad in La Liga, while Union Berlin suffered a 2-1 loss to Wolfsburg in their last Bundesliga fixture on Saturday.

Bellingham, Real Madrid

Real Madrid have not quite been at their free-flowing best early in the season, but the capital giants have been incredibly effective, recording five straight wins in La Liga to sit top of the table on 15 points.

Real Madrid reached the semi-finals of last season’s competition, losing to Manchester City, and they will again be expected to advance deep into the tournament this term.

Union Berlin finished fourth in the Bundesliga last season, claiming 62 points from their 34 matches, which saw them directly qualify for the group stage of the Champions League for the first time.

Union Berlin will now make the step-up into the biggest cup competition in European football, and they will enter the contest at Bernabeu off the back of two disappointing domestic results.

This game has the potential to be a very entertaining match, as Union Berlin will look to make their mark on Wednesday evening. But Real Madrid’s vast experience in the competition to help them navigate their way to all three points in the Spanish capital..

Alan Cash Shocked Over CPP Link

0
Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen

The former minister for Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, is shocked over reports of his intended alliance with the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, a former flagbearer of the latter.

Highly placed sources close to the multiple flag-bearer contender in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) told The Chronicle that the reports carried by the media cannot be true.

The Chronicle was told on Monday, September 18, 2023 that no discussion relative to Alan Kyerematen partnering with Ivor Greenstreet to contest the 2024 presidential elections has been initiated.

According to Alan’s camp, which is yet to respond to the claim officially, the report was propaganda aimed at causing disaffection between Alan Cash, as he is popularly known, and the ruling NPP.

The Chronicle did not obtain any response from the core team of Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, but a bird whispered into our ears that no such discussion had occurred from their side.

Ivor Kobina Greenstreet contested the 2020 presidential elections on the ticket of the CPP, but would not be vying for the party’s upcoming primaries.

FUTURE

It would be recalled that Alan, in the letter that announced his withdrawal from the November 4 NPP flag-bearer contest indicated that he would provide his next line of action concerning his political future, after consultation.

“In the next upcoming weeks, I will provide an indication of the role that I will play in the politics of Ghana after consultations with my family and other well-wishers, various stakeholders and interest groups,” he wrote in the statement.

The Chronicle was informed just yesterday that the said consultation was still ongoing, but no indication was given for the conclusion date.

IVOR GREENSTREET

Ivor Greenstreet, a lawyer, was first elected to lead the CPP in the 2016 general elections. He was re-elected to lead the party in the 2020 December 7 elections after polling 1364 votes against Bright Akwetey’s 597 and Divine Ayivor’s 171 votes at their presidential primary.

He is an avid swimmer, scuba diver and athlete, and a member of the Ghana National Rifle Association (GNRA).

He has represented Ghana’s Black Snipers abroad, being the first African to participate in an international para-shooting event.

Greenstreet adds to his resume as General Secretary of the Ghana Shooting Sports Federation.

The father of two, having contested as a parliamentary candidate in 1996 on the ticket of the CPP, had to withdraw due to the Great Alliance, an electoral alliance between the NPP and the People’s Convention Party (PCP) formed with the intention to defeat the then incumbent NDC, led by former President Jerry Rawlings.

ALAN KYEREMATEN

Alan Kyerematen, in 1990, was responsible for establishing and managing a leading business development programme in Ghana called EMPRETEC, sponsored by the United Nations and Barclays Bank Limited.

He participated in and managed a number of major private and public sector consulting assignments in Ghana, as a principal consultant between 1984 and 1990.

Prior to his appointment as minister, Alan Cash was Ghana’s ambassador to the United States of America during the first term of former President Kufuor.

Alan, the Trade and Industry Minister under the first and second terms of President Akufo-Addo, championed the flagship programme, One District, One Factory.

Under his tenure, the Akufo-Addo government rolled out the Ghana Automotive Development Policy as part of its transformational agenda.

The policy provides the necessary framework to establish assembly and manufacturing capacity in Ghana.

So far, Toyota, Volkswagen, Nissan and others have set up plants and are assembling various models of vehicles for the Ghanaian and West African markets.

Women role critical in ‘breaking the 8’ -Cecilia Gyan

Mrs Cecilia Gyan

The Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese constituency Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mrs Cecilia Gyan, says women have pivotal roles to play to assist the party to ‘break the 8’ in the 2024 elections.

She has, therefore, encouraged the women wing of the party to actively get themselves involved by being resilient, dedicated and committed to the party.

This, she explained, was the surest means through which they could meaningfully contribute significantly to the party’s quest to ‘break the 8’ to retain power in the next general elections.

Mrs Gyan made this known during the official commissioning of the women’s wing of the party in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese constituency in the Central Region.

Women’s wing in a group photograph some party executives

She stated that women were critical to the development of every society and nation building and as such their relevance to the NPP could not be underestimated.

According to her, the era where women hardly had their voices heard in the national political discourse has been replaced with a new era where women have become integral to democratic process.

She appealed to the women’s wing to close their ranks and work assiduously to ensure that the party would increase its fortunes in the constituency, which would consolidate their gains in the region too.

The Central Regional Women’s Organiser of the ruling party, Madam Charlotte Adwoa Antwi, on her part, stated that the party was fully committed to making history by ‘breaking the 8’.

According to her, the party’s commitment to making history by being the first party to record three consecutive political victories under the fourth Republic was feasible, but solely anchored on unity and uncompromised efforts devoid of complacency and divisiveness.

Miss Adwoa Antwi mentioned that the lack of unity often caused the party to lose some parliamentary seats in the central region such as Assikuma Odobeng Brakwa, Twifo Atimokwa, Gomoa East and Assin North among others to the NDC.

“There is about 60 percent to 65 percent probability that we can win the Assin North seat back. Awutu Senya West is a seat that we can easily get, so what I want to tell all the women I work with in the central region is that we should work hard to help the party break the 8,” she said.

The commissioning of the wing followed series of training engagements meant to sharpen their skills to be able to make them effectively work to enhance the chances of the party in the constituency and the region at large.

The Central Regional Minister, Mrs Marigold Justina Assan, the MCE for Kasoa, Anita Obo Amissah and Mr Horace Ekow Ewusi attended the commissioning.

‘Accra Commando’ slapped in traffic case: Judge suggests out of court settlement

0
Mr Henry Quartey (Accra Commando), Greater Accra Regional Minister

The Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah, has suggested an out of court settlement between the Greater Accra Minister, Henry Quartey, popularly known as Accra Commando, and a 61-year-old pensioner who allegedly slapped him in traffic.

Mr. Acquah made the suggestion in open court for the Minister to try an out of court settlement yesterday, before adjourning the case to September 26, 2023.

The case was adjourned for the prosecution, led by DSP Evans Kesse, to present his first prosecution witness.

DSP Kesse has indicated that three witnesses would be testifying, and they are Minister Henry Quartey, his Dispatch Rider and the Investigator in the case.

Nii Odoi Kwao II, alias Robert Koomson, 61, and a retired Computer Programmer, allegedly attacked the Minister in traffic, at Osu, a suburb of Accra.

Nii Odoi Kwao II has been charged with causing road obstruction, threat of death, assault on a public officer, and offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace.

The 61-year-old pleaded not guilty to all the charges, and is currently on bail.

The Facts

According to the Prosecuting Officer, the complainant in the case was a police officer stationed at VVIP and attached to the Greater Accra Regional Minister as his Dispatch Rider, while the accused is a retired Computer Programmer who lives at Osu in Accra.

He said on December 8, 2022, at about 1:10pm, Mr. Quartey, together with his security detail, were visiting Osu, and on reaching a section of the road, he observed that the accused had blocked it with his Kia Bongo car, preventing the Minister and others from accessing the road.

The court was informed that the complainant signalled the accused to give him and other road users way, but he refused and retorted that nobody could access the road unless he finished with what he was doing.

“The action of the accused person created a heavy traffic jam on that stretch of the road. Based on that, the Honourable Minister decided to advise the accused to move his car from the road, but the accused person ignored the Regional Minister,” the court was told.

The accused, according to the prosecution, rather became violent and threatened that if the Regional Minister got closer to him (Nii Odoi Kwao II) he would kill him (Mr. Quartey).

In addition to the threat, the accused resorted to using offensive words on the Minister, including a claim that he was a thief and had stolen state money, but he was moving freely.

The Prosecutor, in describing the sequence of events, said the accused later abandoned the vehicle in the middle of the road, locked it, removed the ignition key, kept it in his pocket, rushed on the Regional Minister and slapped him.

It was at this instance that the security detail of the Regional Minister, who the court suggested should be changed, moved in swiftly to arrest the accused person and handed him over to the Regional Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Accra.

The accused allegedly admitted to the offence in his caution statement during investigations and was accordingly charged with the offences and brought before the court for trial.

Husband & wife remanded to be sentenced

Court

The Accra Circuit Court has remanded a husband and wife, Vera Nartey, also known as Akosua Kyerewah, and Nosah Ekhator, into lawfully custody to await sentencing.

The court, presided over by Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah, remanded the married couple after having found them guilty of conspiracy to commit a crime, and defrauding by false pretences.

The duo are residents of East Legon and were into business.

They were found guilty of defrauding an Adenta based businessman, Godwin Kwame Avadu Donkor, off US$290,000.00 under the false pretence of selling the latter landed property.

Mr. Acquah deferred the couple’s sentence to October 2.

Vera and her husband have been on GH¢1.5 million bail each with three sureties, one of who to be justified and the others civil servants earning not less than GH¢2,000.00 each.

They were granted bail on October 14, after having pleases not guilty to the charges.

Brief facts

The court was told by Chief Inspector Daniel Danku that on or before January 2022, Mr. Donkor, the complainant, needed a house to buy for his family and got in contact with the couple.

The convicts told the complainant that, they had a four-bedroom storey building at East Legon, being offered for sale at US$290,000.00.

Within the same period, the convicts took the complainant to East Legon and showed him the apartment which they were offering for sale.

The complainant, after inspection the building, became interested and bargain with the convicts.

On January 28, 2022, the complainant paid an amount of GH¢1,663,200.00 to the convicts.

Meanwhile, after the payment, the convicts failed to carry out their promise and re-sold the same apartment to one Emmanuel.

The complainant became alarmed and on October 2, 2022, reported the matter to the police for investigation.

On October 3, 2022, the convicts were arrested and on caution, they both admitted receiving GH¢1,663,200.00 from the complainant.

The convicts promised to refund the complainant’s money to him, but failed.

GNFS probes CMB fire outbreak

CMB fire outbreak

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has launched a full-scale investigation to determine the cause of the fire which occurred on Sunday at the CMB Market in Accra. The fire, which broke out at 0500 hours on Sunday, destroyed many houses and shops, leaving scores of people stranded.

Firefighters from the GNFS were quickly dispatched to the scene, but the fire had already spread to several shops upon arrival. ACFO I Timothy Osafo-Affum, the Director of Public Relations, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that professional investigators had been sent to the scene find out the actual cause of the fire.

“The first investigation was done by the firefighters but now a team of professional investigators have been sent to assist in finding out the actual cause of the fire,” he stated.

During the GNA’s visit to the CMB Market, victims were seen tallying their losses, while others were spotted rummaging through the debris in the hope of salvaging remaining items. Others, with gloomy faces, were also seated in groups, discussing their ordeal, and strategizing the way forward.

Madam Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, a former running mate of Mr John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), visited the site on Monday to engage victims of the blaze.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has secured temporary accommodations for the fire victims.

Paul Adom-Otchere, remember Jesus also wept

0
Opinion

Paul Adom-Otchere recently mocked the IGP, Dr. George Akufo Dampare for shedding tears during the Atta Akyea Committee hearing on the leaked tapes, in which some of his trusted lieutenants were allegedly plotting his removal from office.

Paul first stressed his disgust at the IGP for saying that he was multi-tribal and so was the right one for the job. Quoting from the 1992 Constitution, he suggested that the police chief had violated the Supreme Law of the land and should either come out and explain why he said what he said or withdraw that statement.

I am not in the mind of Dr. Dampare, but I believe he was addressing a canker in our system and that is the way ethnocentrism, drives people to take certain decisions to be unjustifiably bias towards their ethnic group against the greater good of this country.

We still have a long way to go to eradicate tribalism. One way we can start is by accepting that God put us here on this side of the globe and we are not to tear each other apart but embrace one another as siblings, should.

This negative tendency of tribalism which comes natural to some is the issue of feeling one’s tribe is better than others. And this is how Dampare, using his situation, feels like addressing it, but Paul does understand it.

Being a member of four different ethnic groups, I find it impossible to accept that any ethnic group is more important than the others. So anytime I find myself in one of my families and other ethnic groups I belong to, are being unfairly attacked, I naturally jump to defend them. I am only hoping that inter-tribal marriages should boom and with it, those born out of such marriages would not blindly take sides with one tribe over the other.

As stated earlier, I am not in the mind of IGP Dr. George Akufo Dampare, but I can only suggest that his multi-ethnic make-up, inspires him to deal with everybody fairly. May be, Paul Adom-Otchere needs to look at the whole issue from this angle. Meanwhile he must lead the fight against tribalism in this country. It is very important.

And Dampare, wept. It has become an issue for Paul Adom-Otchere to suggest that the president should relieve the IGP of his post.

Why do people weep? People weep to express grief, sorrow, joy or any overpowering emotion by shedding tears. One may weep for joy, one may weep with rage, one may weep with pain. No matter who you are the tears will come when they feel like coming.

Research suggests that when you cry, your body releases endorphins and oxytocin. These natural chemical messengers help relieve emotional distress along with physical pain. In other words, crying is a self-soothing behaviour. And Paul Adom-Otchere suggested the only reasons one should cry. He added that crying can be acceptable at the scene of an accident.

But wait, this is where the police will be needed most. So, are these officers also to start wailing instead of helping to normalise the situation, so that the injured could be rushed to the hospital and the dead to the morgue?

According to Paul, if I am to interpret what he said, then the ambulance arrives and instead of the officers quickly going about their responsibility to save lives, they should join in the cacophony of wailing and mourning. His opinion too is good, but unacceptable.

The tears will come when they feel like and in some cases, they cannot be easily controlled. Crying or weeping is not a sign of weakness but another form of expression of emotion and this Paul must understand.

In the Sacred Scriptures, at least over twenty people wept and for various reasons. They include Moses (Exodus 14:15-16); Esau (Genesis 27:38); Hannah (1 Samuel 1:10); David (1 Samuel 30:4); Peter (Matthew 26:75) and Paul (Acts 10:19).

In John 11:35, Jesus wept. There is no evidence of Jesus wailing at the crucifixion, where there was torture and pain, He wept at the tomb of his friend, Lazarus, in Bethany. Paul Adom-Otchere could take Jesus on, for weeping here. Jesus had the power to raise the dead and so why should he weep like the mourners, when He was just about to perform a miracle?

Biblical scholars and theologians have suggested reasons why He wept at the tomb of Lazarus. One such explanation by Bethany Verret, suggested that “Jesus wept because He experienced and understood the same feelings as the people around Him.” But wait, is Bethany trying to say that the All-Knowing God does not understand the feelings of man?

I will suggest that maybe Jesus saw the soul of Lazarus in the wrong side of the spiritual realm and became sad, so he had to weep.

Paul Adom-Otchere can weep over certain things, but he should know that some people will not weep under those situations. The IGP wept and I will suggest that he had to because he suddenly realised that those, he so much loved and trusted could plot against him.

It is possible that they could have even killed him during an operation when he is alone with them. To suddenly come to term with such a betrayal, most people would naturally be moved to tears. Remember Jesus, also wept!

Editorial: CDS should please stop ‘creating fear and panic’

0
Editorial

“The coups in West Africa are a major concern, but, for us, we are resolved to protecting the Constitution and the will of the people. If the people decide that democracy is the type of governance they want, then we need to respect that. Our mandate is to protect the territorial integrity of the State, and we are focused on that.

“So, when you hear any news of coup, you should be assured that the Ghana Armed Forces is not interested in governance. We believe that if the people don’t want the government, they have a maximum of four years to change it.

“It’s mostly the press who put the fear of military coup in the people, but I want to assure you that we have the interest of the nation at heart.” These are the words of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces, Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, as reported by the Daily Graphic yesterday.

The mere mentioning of the word coup sends shivers down the spines of many Ghanaians. Though the 1979 bloody coup, led by the late Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, was described as a house cleaning exercise, many civilians lost their lives and properties during the period. The 1982 coup which overthrew Dr. Hilla Limann’s administration was no different.

Apart from this, Ghanaians were forced to sleep under a curfew against their will, but there was nothing they could do about it, because those who had the guns were calling the shots. With these traumas still at the back of our minds, especially those who saw the 1979 and 1982 coups, there is the fear to hear that the military have taken over the reins of the country.

Unfortunately, because of the military takeovers that have hit the West African sub-region in recent months, the issue of coup de tats has been revived in Ghana. The Chronicle does not, however, expect the military to also join this debate. That is why we are alarmed over the reported statement made by the CDS that the military would not support coup in Ghana.

The Chronicle may not be privy to intelligence information he has as the CDS, but even if that is the case, he does not need to send any signal that will create fear and panic among the civilian population. All what he must do is to work behind the scene to prevent it from happening. For a whole CDS to be commenting on coup matters in public, it feeds into the perception that, may be something is about to happen, which we believe is NOT the case.

In any case, those who stage coup de tats do not secure official permission from the military top hierarchy – they plot underground and then execute it. So the argument by CDS Amoama that the military would not support coup does not arise in this case. The political situation in Mali, Gabon, Guinea, Niger and Burkina Faso is not the same in Ghana.

Some of the presidents in the aforementioned countries turned their respective countries into family dynasties and were always subverting the will of the people. Certainly, this is not happening in Ghana as we have, since 1992, peacefully changed governments through the ballot box. With these credentials, why should a military officer just get up to announce that it has toppled a constitutionally elected government, for a whole CDS to also be commenting on this?

As we earlier indicated, the civilians may be entertaining that fear, but the moment the military also start talking about it, it exacerbates the situation and this is what The Chronicle is against. It is ironical that the same CDS, who was accusing the press for putting the fear of military coup in the people, is also guilty of the same offence.

To us, the duty of the CDS and the military establishment is to defend the 1992 Constitution, as he himself admitted when he met members of the Ghana Journalists Association. This, we dare say, is what must occupy their minds and not coup comments that will rather frighten the people.

DVLA partners Universities to introduce Tertiary Driver’s Project

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has expressed the desire to collaborate with the leadership of the various universities in the country to introduce the Tertiary Driver’s Project.

The project is aimed at helping students to learn how to drive, acquire a license before completing school and also renew their licenses as well as another avenue to enhance their chances of seeking employment in the job market.

Ing. Amos Abaka, Ashanti Regional Manager of the DVLA, briefing the media after a meeting with the school authorities at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), explained that, the initiative would go a long way to help reduce the number of unemployed young graduates who were always looking for unavailable white collar jobs after schools.

DVLA and KNUST officials in a pose

According to him, the meeting was fruitful and positive and achieved the intended goal, as the KNUST authorities had given the green light to ensure that the programme was rolled out to attach the school programmes to reducing unemployment among the youth on the streets, with some of them being professionals in the academic field.

He disclosed that the university had put measures in place for the project to commence and had acquired a piece of land for the project.
Dr. Norris Bekoe, University Relations Officer (URO), also revealed that the university believed in capacity building in any shape or form, and for that matter, any kind of partnership that helped to improve the lives of humanity.

He noted that the DVLA, as part of strategies being introduced to improve services, had come up with a product that involved the issue of a driver’s licence to students in all tertiary institutions throughout the country.

The product, which is christened Tertiary Students Drive (TertSDrive), seeks to grant the opportunity to all students who are willing to acquire a driver’s licence to do so in the comfort and convenience of their campuses.

The URO of the KNUST disclosed that the mission was to make it possible for students who could find jobs that may require driving to provide additional value and market-focused to their driver’s licences to ensure that they do not lose the opportunity when it comes.
