Freight forwarders role in international trade still crucial – Eddy

0

The President of the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF), Mr. Eddy Akrong has stated that it’s almost indispensable, the role of freight forwarder in today’s international trade despite the increasing use of technology.

According to him, the freight forwarder has evolved from the customs house agency work to a critical logistics manager within the complex supply chain in international business.

Speaking to Kennedy Mornah on the award-winning Eye on Port program, Mr.Akrong said this trust that has been earned came from a lot of dedication to continuous learning and training to be on the top of supply chain issues.

He said this group of professionals have had to master risk management and serve as trustees that ensure the best possible cost reduction for clients.

Freight forwarders, he noted, now source goods for traders, keep inventory, arrange transport, deal with regulatory bodies, conduct doorstep deliveries and in some cases provide storage facilities for clients.

“This means that, the freight forwarder has had to keep abreast with everyday changes in international trade and stay savvy to manoeuvre supply chain inconsistencies and shocks,” he said.

According to the President of GIFF, freight forwarders in Ghana today have become “more of consultants for importers and exporters” for almost every procedure in the trading process.

“If you look at what is happening from our French land-locked neighbours and all the political instabilities, trade is still going on. We should ask how these goods get there. Goods land in Ghana and overnight there’s a coup here and borders are closed here and there. How do you reroute these cargoes because they’d have to get to their destinations? It all takes risk management,” he asserted.

He continued that “we just heard of an earthquake close to Marrakech, we know the vessels may want to veer off. How do you reroute goods in that area?”

He said freight forwarders have become master logisticians so much that, they play essential roles for the e-commerce business, providing inventory management and deliveries for traders.

According to Mr. Eddy Akrong, despite the increasing use of technology, which they are happy about, the freight forwarder cannot be overlooked so far as the prosperity of international trade is concerned.

EgweiKannatey-Asibu, a pupil of Anomabo Methodist A, who stood in for the Anomabo Circuit A, took the third position in that category with 69 points.

Purpose of the competition

The event was purposely meant to improve and promote literacy to accelerate quality early childhood education among the pupils of the Anomabo/Yamoransa circuits.

The programme, which was organised by the Boys and Girls Club of Ghana- Anomabo, was fully sponsored by the Kobbah Acquah Foundation (KoAF) and it was under the theme: “Reading: Key to Lifelong Learning”.

The Head of Languages Department at the Mfantseman Girls SHS, Saltpond, Mr Joseph Ackon-Mensah, who was the Main Speaker, explained that Lifelong Learning was the effort to have extra education or to develop further skills beyond the formal or compulsory school learning.

“In our current competitive world, girls, boys, men, women who have the true passion to add value to their education and skills, not just possessing certificates, are those who will ‘eat the good of the land’ as the Bible puts it”, he said.

According to Mr Ackon-Mensah, we are not developing as individuals, as communities and as a nation because we have not developed imagination and creativity in ourselves.

He, therefore, encouraged the people to develop high interest in reading adding that “Studies have indicated that there is one habit common among the wealthiest people in the world, and it is READING”.

“First, we must understand that the doors of knowledge can only be opened with READING. The books and other written materials around us contain the great pieces of information we need,” he stated.

He also noted that “knowledge cannot come to us except we move for it by cultivating the habit of reading everything we come across. We need to find the right treasure of information or knowledge in books and other readable materials.”

He, therefore, stressed that it was imperative for the pupils to read regularly all the time but not to wait until they have been given assignments before they would read, because knowledge could not be hidden from a person pursuing lifelong learning.

The event was well attended by several dignitaries and other stakeholders including the SISO for the Mankessim Circuit, Mr Spencer Essiam, teachers as well as parents.

Stakeholders discuss business challenges at Tema Port

0

A Joint Customs Consultative Committee engagement has been held in Tema bringing together stakeholders in the Port business to discuss the challenges they face in their daily operations at the Port.

The open forum gave the opportunity to the port stakeholders to register their concerns, displeasure or otherwise on current events in the industry.

Stakeholders present at the event include; Customs, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Terminal operators, Regulatory agencies such as the Food and Drugs Authority and the various Freight Forwarding associations among others.

Key among the issues discussed are clearance processes of general goods and cars, the excise tax stamp, the Upfront VAT system, the Warehousing Regime, the Transit Regime and other compliance related issues.

The Chief Revenue Officer, in charge of System Administration, Esther Amekudzi provided clarification on why agents are blocked in the system.

“I talk about blocking importer and blocking the customs house agent, but people come and say but why are you blocking the agent as well, because the agent was only clearing for the importer. The issue is that you the customs house agent, you are carrying out a fiduciary duty for the importer,” she explained.

The Marketing and Public Affairs Manager at the Port of Tema, Abena Serwaa Opoku-Fosu, revealed that Terminal 2 in the Port has been secured as a freight station to facilitate clearance.

“One of the things that we have been able to do that we are very thankful for under the leadership of the current Assistant Commissioner in Tema, is that we have finally been able to secure Terminal 2 as a freight station and there are conditions to be fulfilled. The first being that we should set up the office and we have done about 80% refurbishment of the old Terminal 2 so that we can accommodate the Custom Officers who will be assigned there and this is good news because it would cut the cost for a lot of people,” she revealed.

The Director of Imports and Exports at the Food and Drugs Authority touched on unregistered products and the need for all importers to register their products before importing them.

“If you bring in unregistered products what it means is that you have breached the law, by that it means the product you are bringing in, you have not had the opportunity of guaranteeing the safety to consumers. So, if you could observe, in June FDA strengthened this particular policy to ensure that will improve on that,” he said.

The Chairman of Tema Branch of the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders, Johnny Mantey, described the Joint Customs Consultative Committee platform as a problem-solving platform.

“We look at JCCC as the solution center because since it started somewhere in about six or seven years ago. I can say about 96% or 97% of the problems or issues that we have put on the platform are resolved so we are very proud of this platform,” he stated.
