Black Sherif replies accusations of selling his soul to the devil

Black Sherif

‘Kwaku the traveler’ hitmaker, Black Sherif has addressed a netizen’s accusation of selling his soul to the devil during a live video session of the Artiste.

In a humorous manner, Black Sherif replied amidst laughter; “You sell soul, Jon, who wants to sell your soul more than me? Do you even know where they sell souls?”

He jokingly replied that if the fan knew where one could sell their soul, he might have already done so.

Black Sherif, whose real name is Mohammed Ismail Sherif, has been making waves in the music industry.

He recently had a highly successful debut in New York City at Palladium Times Square, where hordes of enthusiastic fans gathered to witness the reigning VGMA Artiste of the Year perform his hit songs and songs from his widely-shared album.

Despite the excitement and fan frenzy surrounding the event, some fans noticed peculiar imagery on the stage backdrop, which raised questions. The set featured a figure with human-like attributes, including horns and eerie red eyes.

This led to speculation and curiosity among Ghanaians, with some suggesting that Black Sherif may have joined a secretive organization or cult due to the imagery displayed during his concert.

Modi introduces women’s bill in new India parliament

PM Modi is set to walk to the new building

The Indian government has introduced a bill guaranteeing a third of seats for women in the lower house of parliament and state assemblies.

The contentious bill, first proposed in 1996, has been pending for decades amid opposition from some political parties.

Its revival is expected to boost the governing Bharatiya Janata Party’s fortunes in general elections next May.

The bill was tabled at the new Indian parliament’s first session and is still some way from becoming law.

It would require the approval of both houses of parliament and a majority of state legislatures, as well as the Indian president’s signature.

In his opening speech at the new parliament building, Mr Modi praised the proposed legislation and said it was a special moment for the country.

The PM also took a swipe at the opposition and said that the previous Congress party-led governments had failed to clear the bill when they were in power.

Azerbaijan launches ‘anti-terrorist’ attack in disputed regions

Azerbaijan increased its military build-up around Nagorno-Karabakh

Azerbaijan has launched attacks against the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, with bombing raids hitting the regional capital of Stepanakert, in an explosive move that threatens to reopen a bloody 2020 war.

Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku, said its “anti-terrorist” campaign on the blockaded region, which local Armenians call Artsakh, was “limited” and necessary to restore order, and that it was committed to peace. However, the previous offensive, in which Azerbaijan retook land from a local Armenian population, was fiercely fought amid widespread accusations of war crimes.

Video from Stepanakert appeared to show bomb raid warnings blaring and the audible sounds of artillery fire. Other video from the region seemed to show Azerbaijan using drones to strike Armenian anti-air defence positions. Artillery fire, possibly from a Grad multiple rocket launcher system, could also be heard on the outskirts of the city of Askeran.

Azerbaijan said it had launched the attacks to force Armenian-backed fighters from the region and demanded that the local ethnic Armenian government “must dissolve itself”.

Authorities in Nagorno-Karabakh said in a Facebook post that five people had been killed and 80 wounded as a result of the military operations.

Five soldiers dead, eleven others missing after attack in Mali

Mali military government attends a ceremony for the 10 Malian soldiers that were killed

An attack on two military camps in northern Mali claimed by armed rebel groups killed five soldiers, while 11 others are missing, the army said late Monday.

The army said on social media that it had also lost a plane during the fighting in the town of Lere, in the Timbuktu region of northern Mali. Around 30 assailants were “neutralised” in the attack on Sunday, which the army said was carried out by “terrorists”.

The Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA), an alliance of armed groups dominated by Tuaregs who took up arms in 2012 seeking autonomy or independence, claimed responsibility for the attack on Sunday.

It also said it had taken control of two military camps in Lere and shot down an army plane.

It was the latest attack against army positions in northern Mali, which in recent weeks has seen a resurgence of activity by armed groups and separatists.

Anger in India as Canadian Prime Minister points finger over murder

0
Delhi police secure Canada's high commission in the Indian capital

Memories of the decade-long armed Sikh insurgency – which peaked in the 1980s and in which thousands of people died – remain strong in India. So when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Delhi of involvement in the death of a Canadian Sikh leader, many Indians reacted angrily.

Mr Trudeau said Canadian intelligence was looking at “credible allegations potentially linking” the Indian state to the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent campaigner for a separate Sikh homeland who was shot dead on 18 June in British Columbia (BC).

India has rejected the claim as “absurd”.

As Delhi and Ottawa face-off in their worst-ever diplomatic row, Indian analysts, political commentators and leaders have been sounding off on social media.

Canada, Justin Trudeau and Hardeep Singh Nijjar have been the top trends on X (formerly Twitter).

One user wrote that Delhi had given a “befitting reply” to Canada while another said the government had “put Trudeau in his place”.

Biden urges UN Security Council to authorise international mission to Haiti

US President Joe Biden

United States President Joe Biden has called on the United Nations to approve a “security support mission” to Haiti to help the Caribbean nation stem months of surging gang violence.

Speaking during the UN General Assembly on Tuesday morning, Biden urged the UN Security Council to “authorise this mission now”.

“The people of Haiti cannot wait much longer,” the US president said during his address at UN headquarters in New York City.

Biden is the only top leader from the five Security Council permanent member states to be in attendance at the high-profile UN event.

In October of last year, Haiti’s de facto leader, Prime Minister Ariel Henry, called on the international community to help set up a “specialised armed force” to quell a surge in gang violence that has disrupted daily life for millions of Haitians.

More than 2,400 people have been killed in Haiti since the start of the year amid rampant gang violence, the UN said earlier this month.

The request for an international mission to Haiti enjoyed the backing of the US and the UN, but a deployment has been stalled for months because no country had agreed to lead such a mission to the country.

Invest massively in education of your children -Educationist

An Educationist and former Headmaster of Sogakope Senior High School (SOGASCO), Mr. Kwame Tawiah Agor, has stressed the need for parents to invest massively in the education of their children to prepare them adequately to face the future with confidence.

Mr. Agor said education was the only tool that could be used to transform lives, and adequately prepare children to become responsible adults in future, therefore, parents should regard investment in the education of their wards as the best legacy they could leave for them.

He was speaking on the theme: “Transforming Lives Through Education, Preparing Lives for Tomorrow” at the first Speech and Prize Giving Day of Inheritance School at Kpetoe in the Agortime-Ziope District of the Volta Region.

Mr. Agor emphasised that the provision of holistic, accessible and quality education should be seen as the only way to transforming lives to ensure that the youth would be prepared sufficiently to become responsible adults in future.

He also asked the pupils and students to take their lessons seriously, and refrain from practices likely to affect their education, which would endanger their future.

The Educationist stressed the importance of children to respect their parents and teachers, to enable them to provide their needs and impart knowledge to them, which was key to their future development, and added that pupils and students should work hard to justify the investment parents were making in them.

The Proprietor of Inheritance School, Mr. Anthony Agbovi, said the school, which was established in 2015, was adjudged the Best Basic School in the Agortime-Ziope District, in terms of academic performance at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Mr. Agbovi said the vision of the school was to be the best in the district, and among the best five in the country, as education was the bedrock of development, therefore the Inheritance School was committed to provide the best education to children as they were being prepared to face the future with sureness.

The Headmaster of Inheritance School, Mr. Michael Semanu Owusu, announced that the school had a total population of 427, made up of 217 boys and 210 girls and 20 teachers, and urged stakeholders to live up to their responsibilities to sustain the progress made so far.

The Chairman of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), Mr Bright K. Egbenu lauded the efforts of the management of the school and also commended teachers for their hard work which had distinguished the school as the best in the district, and pledged on behalf of parents to contribute meaningfully towards development of the school.

A total of 12 pupils, students, teachers and non-teaching staff who distinguished themselves received citations, textbooks and cash as their awards.

Men and boys schooled on gender equality

The Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Letsa (middle) and the Volta Regional Director of Education, Mr Francis Agbemadi (left)

The Volta Region branch of the Department of Gender, under the auspices of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC), with support from the United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA), has organised a two-day Gender Equality Males (GEMS) empowerment school for males in Ho.

The GEMS, which had educated 30 in-school adolescent boys and 30 men from identified male groups from the Keta Municipality, Akatsi-North District, Central Tongu District, North Dayi District, and South-Dayi District to educate them to understand the importance of Gender Equality, and also impact the members of the community on the new knowledge acquired.

Speaking on the theme: “Action for Gender Equality, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights: Men and Boys as Key Partners,” the Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, commended the Regional Director of Gender for her hard work and dedication to ensuring that gender equality would become a reality, and removed gender-based violence and child marriages from the region.

Dr. Letsa said the VRCC had noted with satisfaction efforts being made by the Department of Gender in the region to deepen education on gender equality, and called on the beneficiary boys and men to take their lessons within the short period more seriously to enable them to also educate others on gender equality in their respective schools and communities.

He was confident that the programme would help educate the males on child marriage and adolescent reproductive health issues, which would empower them to appreciate the need to uphold gender roles in society, and help to reduce teenage pregnancy cases.

According to him, the programme would prepare the males adequately to bring positive change on gender issues, and help to improve on adolescent reproductive health issues that would help eliminate child marriage in the society, and would enable the participants to become more responsible in building a healthy society.

Dr. Letsa observed that after the programme the boys and men would understand the need not to be violent towards girls and women, which occurred in the past as a result of ignorant of the complementary roles that gender could play to ensure a peaceful society, which would help them to promote human rights across gender to reduce gender-based violence in the region.

He noted that when adolescents engaged in sexual activities, it would definitely affect their development, particularly their education, since they could be infected with sexually transmitted diseases, or would become pregnant in the process, which would have negative effects on their future.

Dr. Letsa said much as the government was committed to ensuring gender equality by the year 2030 to protect the vulnerable groups in society, it was important for people to take up issues on gender equality more seriously, and added that all should support efforts being made to create awareness on gender equality in the region.

The Volta Regional Director of Education, Mr. Francis Agbemadi, said it was apt that education on reproductive health, gender, the need to prevent child marriage, and sexual education was not directed to girls and women alone and involved boys and men, which would go a long way to remove negative perception on gender in the society.

Mr. Agbemadi continued that education on gender equality would definitely help to bring the needed change to society, and stressed that his outfit would collaborate with the Girls Education Unit to effectively facilitate education on gender and gender-based violence in schools.

The Volta Regional Director of the Department of Gender, Mrs. Thywill  Eyra Kpe, explained that her outfit brought both men and boys together in similar education programme in the past, which was not effective because the boys could not express themselves before the men.

Mrs. Kpe continued that as a result, the programme for 2023 separated the boys from the men to ensure that the boys would effectively participate by expressing themselves to expose issues bothering them on gender and gender-based violence in their respective communities.

Feature: Uncouth Ken Agyapong is not presidential material Scandal-soaked Mahama is not the answer either, even though Akufo-Addo has messed all of us up

0
Mr. John Dramani Mahama and Mr. Kennedy Agyapong

One of my greatest regrets as a Ghanaian is that Mr. John Dramani Mahama has had the courage, after the disaster of an administration he unleashed on Ghanaians, to not only talk on national issues, but to gather the courage to contest the election for a return to Jubilee House and occupy the highest office of the land.

The scandal-soaked ex-Head of State’s desire to seek re-election, for me, tells the story of the monumental failure of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the leader of this nation.

When the son of the former Head of State won the 2016 presidential vote, he was so popular that he could walk on air. I still have images of President Akufo-Addo driving to the spare parts hub at Abossey Okai in Accra, and being received like a conquering hero of war.

Now, he sits at Jubilee House in Accra and behaving like the king without clothes. He wants to hear from only those who are helping him to ride on the elephant deeply into the forest.

When Nana Akufo-Addo took power on January 7, 2017, aided by those seeking the welfare of the state, including my humble self, the dollar was exchanging for four cedis to one. Even then, some of us lambasted the Mahama administration for the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) inability to manage the economy.

The NDC was handed the cedi at an exchange rate of one equals one, after the denominational exercise undertaken by the Kufuor regime. I led the way in attacking the Mahama regime as incompetent, corrupt, and greedy.

In the run-up to the 2016 Presidential and Legislative Elections, I created a column in The Chronicle under the banner: Why Ebo Quansah Won’t Vote For Mahama. I still believe in every word I wrote.

A Head of State collecting a Mercedes Benz from a Burkinabe contractor and giving him a huge contract on the Eastern Corridor Road as a reward, is corrupt, SIMPLICITA. A Vice President who was allegedly being investigated by his boss for buying Embraer planes from Brazil at the wrong prices for this country, is not worth leading this country from the front, I wrote.

A Head of State advancing huge state resources totaling a staggering US$100 million to a friend’s company without ensuring that the money did not go down the drain, could not command my respect, to the extent of seeking re-election. He did not deserve my vote, and that of the good people of Ghana.

When a brother of the sitting President re-located from the United Kingdom to Ghana to become an intermediary between Airbus and Ghana in the process of the acquisition of aircraft for the Republic of Ghana, that is scandal on wheels.

To add to the scandal of Airbus on Ghana, news broke out in London that the sitting Head of State of this lovely country, had been cited in Southwark Crown Court in South London for aiding a biological brother and two of his friends to receive illegal payments in the acquisition of aircraft by Ghana, John Dramani Mahama lost every respect I had for him as the leader of this society.

Mr. Martin Amidu, as Special Prosecutor, named Mr. Mahama as the Government Official One named in documents in the Southward Crown Court. In a gargantuan fraud on the people of Ghana, Amidu chickened out of the assignment and rather courted praise from those who stood to gain from Mahama’s leadership of this country, and blamed the Presidency for running away from national duty.

For me, it is a big shame that this scandal-soaked ex-President is seeking to return to the very top of national affairs.  I dare state that scandal-soaked John Dramani Mahama would not have dared to seek re-election had Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo been able to steer the affairs of this country successfully.

Many may not know, or are refusing to know, that Mr. John Dramani Mahama is cited as one of the richest Ghanaians that ever lived. Some say the Bole/Bamboi ex-Member of Parliament is worth a whopping US$900 million.

I am not in a position to confirm or deny that at the moment. Actions, they say, speak louder than words. His sole sponsorship of NDC activities and general demeanour seem to suggest that Mr. John Dramani Mahama is a very rich man. I cannot point to his businesses. All I know is that he worked for the Japan International Co-Operation Agency (JICA) for a few years. The rest of his life has been spent in governance of this country.

Meanwhile, the cedi that was handed to the sitting President at four to one dollar has sunk as low as 12 to one, triggering an economic crisis that has defied logic and unresolved at the time of going to press last night.

Now, professionals are leaving this country in droves. When Kufuor hoisted the elephant at the Castle from 2001 to January 2009, many Ghanaian professionals returned home. Now under the same elephant, doctors, nurses, teachers and other professionals are taking flight in their numbers.  It is a worrying scenario to add to the crippling economic mess we are now in.

One needs not have gone to Harvard or the London School of Economics to appreciate the enormous economic stranglehold on Ghanaians unleashed by Ken Ofori Atta,  the Finance Minister, who is refusing to go away. With the cedi depreciating form 4-1 to 12-1, the cost of living has risen from four in 2016 to 12 as you read this article.

To add to the woes of this country, the promise given by the Finance Minister in his budget presentation recently, that the economy was on course for recovery, has all been illusory. There is no hope in sight, as the average Ghanaian’s burden increases.

It is difficult to see where salvation is coming from, judging by the fact that even Kennedy Agyapong feels comfortable to offer himself for election to be President of this country.

I must be honest, I am baffled by the desire of Mr. Agyapong to seek for the highest office of the land, given the way he has carried himself so far. Mr. Agyapong is a Member of Parliament for Assin North. In some way, he is my parliamentarian. Part of me comes from Assin Akropong, where my father settled, and where I spent my holidays from the elementary school level to post-secondary.

My worry is how my MP talks on radio and television and behaves especially on social media. On countless occasions, the Honourable Member of Parliament has been involved in exchanging words, some unprintable, with little girls on issues bordering on morality.

My checks at Parliament House indicate that Mr. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong is one of the regular absentees. If Mr. Agyapong is unable to sit in Parliament and draft laws for this nation, who told him that he is presidential material. He is uncouth, untrained, and certainly not fit for the high office of the land.

The tragedy is that he has got a large following from the base of the party. The base of the party, I mean the Polling Booth Executives, appear to have found a hero in him.

Could anybody imagine the New Patriotic Party, the political edifice founded by the likes of Prof. Kofi Abrefa Busia, Dr. J.B. Danquah, B.J. Da Rocha, Peter Ala Adjetey, and co. being led by foul-mouthed Kennedy Agyapong?

I do not know how rich he is, but he goes about bragging about riches. I learn he says he became filthy rich driving a taxi on the streets of New York. I do not buy into that idea. If there are other contributing factors to his so-call riches, he must come clean.

Not many who drive commercial cars on the streets of New York become that rich. Whatever resources he claims to be at his disposal, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong is certainly not presidential material.

We must be serious in this society!

Ebo Quansah in Accra
