Female Running Mate Will Help Break The ‘8’ … Concerned teachers tell Bawumia

Kwadwo Fordjour spokesman of selected teachers addressing the press conference

A group of concerned teachers in Kumasi has joined the agitation for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) hierarchy to consider the choice of a female running mate to consolidate electoral fortunes in the December presidential election.

Mr. Kwadwo Fordjour, spokesperson for the group, while addressing a press conference at the Miklin Hotel in Kumasi, last Friday, called for the intervention of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and other prominent personalities to advise Vice President Bawumia and the National Executive committee of the party to consider a woman as the running mate.

He further said it will make the work of various campaign teams easier to amass votes across the nation to help “break the 8”.

Defending their position for the clamour for a female running mate, particularly from the Ashanti region, Mr Fordjour explained that women’s participation in governance will not benefit women alone, but to the benefit of the general society as a whole.

According to Mr Fordjour, women are the backbone of the family unit and communities and play an important role of providing care, support and nurturing their families. They also mould society as they play significant role in community building.

The group leader said women are essential to the development of children, stressing that women’s participation in decision-making in general has been beneficial to society.

Mr Fordjour emphasised that it is time to encourage more women in decision making, as they prioritise policies in the area of quality education, health, housing and social justice to help improve lives for everyone.

The Spokesperson further pointed out that the under-representation of women at any level of governance and decision-making results in a democratic deficit, hence the need for NPP to engage diverse groups (women) to help make better decisions.

In a related development, the Kejetia NPP Identifiable Groups (comprising traders from Kejetia, Central market and the Bantama Race Course market) have also recommended a female running mate from the Ashanti Region to partner Dr. Bawumia for NPP’s presidential ticket in the 2024 elections.

They called on the National Executives of the NPP to grant their plea, saying women are more compassionate and can equally deliver in governance.

Addressing the media at a separate meeting on Friday, April 12, 2024 Elder  Emmanuel Gyekye said Dr. Bawumia’s choice will make or unmake the NPP, for which reason NPP needs a strong pair for the presidential ticket.

Chairman Gyeke pleaded that the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, intervenes on their behalf for the leadership of the NPP to appoint a female of Asante descent for the running mate slot, to mobilise teeming women population in the stronghold to help the party to “break the 8.

Lawyer Kwabena Boateng – Ejisu NPP candidate

A private legal practitioner, Kwabena Boateng, has beaten eight other persons who competed in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primary held at Ejisu on April 13 to become the parliamentary candidate.

The contestants in last Saturday’s NPP primary included former Ghana Football Association (GFA) boss, Kwesi Nyantakyi, Dr. Evans Duah, Klinsman Karikari Mensah, Helena Mensah, Jacqueline Abena Pokua Amoah-Boaitey, Portia Baffoe Abronye, Aaron Prince Duah and Yaa Gyamera Aboagye.

Kwabena Boateng secured 394 votes out of a total of 1033 valid votes cast, according to the Electoral Commission.

He was closely trailed by Madam Helena Mensah who had 302 votes.

Yaa Gyamera Aboagye got 229 votes, whilst former GFA boss Lawyer Kwesi Nyantakyi managed a miserable 35 votes.

The rest are Dr. Evans Duah (61 votes), Kinsman Karikari Mensa (2 votes); Abena Pokuaa Amoah-Boaitey (0); Portia Acheampong (6 votes); Aaron Prince Duah (2 votes).

Lawyer Kwabena Boateng, who is also the Second Vice Chairman of the party in the constituency, is, therefore, set to contest the Ejisu Parliamentary seat in the impending by-election on April 30.

The Ejisu seat became vacant following the demise of the late John Kumah last month after  a short illness.

In a post election address, Mr. Boateng thanked the delegates for the confidence reposed in him and electing him as the NPP parliamentary candidate. He dedicated his victory to the late MP Dr. John Kumah and promised to be a good representative for the Ejisu constituents if voted as MP.

Irene Naa Torshie Addo

Ralph Agyapong, who is a legal representative and brother of Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, has described Irene Naa Torshie Addo as the ideal female candidate to partner Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the December elections.

According to Ralph, the choice of Irene Naa Torshie Addo as running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is one that he strongly believes would be endorsed by Kennedy Agyapong, if the party decides to pick a woman to partner the NPP flagbearer.

“I am not biased when it comes to the choice of a woman, but if you put your ears to the ground, you will hear testimonies about how she receives people who approach her warmly.

“I know she and my brother (Kennedy Agyapong) may have some minor issues but if you put up a list of the female contenders, he will tell you his choice is Irene,” he told Kwame Nkrumah Tikese of Okay FM in an interview.

Among other factors, he noted Irene Naa Torshie’s impeccable human relations and age, as some of the traits that will give her an advantage over other potential female candidates.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is yet to pick a running mate ahead of the 2024 general elections. His potential choices include several male and female party stalwarts including; Irene Naa Toeshie Addo who is the Administrator of the District Assembly Common Fund.

Meanwhile, there is a growing campaign for Dr.Bawumia to settle on a female candidate after his main contender, former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress settled on Prof.Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate.

However, according to Ralph Agyapong, the party should not be pushed into choosing a female running mate because of the choice made by the opposition NDC.

Brigadier General E Aggrey-Quashie, Director General for Publication Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF)

Brigadier General E Aggrey-Quashie, Director General for Publication Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has said his outfit and the Ghana Police Service are investigating the circumstances that led to some residents staging an attack on the Eastern Naval Command and the Biekro barracks at Tema Newtown.

The first attack happened at about 7.53 pm, Friday, April 12, this year, when a Naval vehicle was attacked and damaged by some irate youth who were celebrating the annual Kplejoo traditional festival of the people of Tema Newtown.

Brigadier General Aggrey-Quashie said three Navy personnel onboard the vehicle sustained injuries and were rushed to the Naval Base Medical Centre.

“In the course of the confrontation, the Naval personnel arrested three suspects and handed them to the Tema Newtown District Police Command,” he authored in a release to the media.

He said a mob, suspected to be part of the celebrants, later attacked the Base, throwing stones and other implements in a bid to get the three suspects released.

Sensing that the mob attack could affect the sensitive installations and the security of the Base, he said warning shots were fired to repel the attack.

“It was later reported by the police that two dead civilians were brought to the Tema General Hospital. The cause of death is yet to be ascertained,” he said.

Then, on Saturday, April 13, 2024 Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie said the mob attacked the Naval Base and Biekro Naval Barracks, destroying several properties.

While he, on behalf of GAF, expressed condolences to the bereaved families, Brigadier General Aggrey-Quashie further called for sobriety by all parties while investigations are carried out.

IGP Dampare receiving his award

Rotary International has conferred its most prestigious fellow’s medal on the Inspector-General of Police Dr George Akuffo Dampare.

The prestigious Paul Harris Fellow’s medal was conferred on the IGP during the Rotary International District 9104 Official District Conference in Kumasi, which was attended by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu.

This recognition celebrates Dr Akuffo Dampare’s exceptional leadership in maintaining peace and security throughout the country, since assuming the role of Inspector-General of Police.

In a keynote address titled: “Creating Hope During the 2024 Elections and Beyond: Activities of the Ghana Police Service”, the IGP shared with the audience various initiatives he and the current Police leadership have taken to build hope and confidence among the public.

He cited among other initiatives, increased Police visibility, scaled up intelligence gathering and the ‘Snatch Them Young Policing Initiative’ as some of the ways the Police have adopted to build hope among the citizenry.

He also urged the public to help build hope among personnel of the Police by encouraging them when they do right and constructively criticising them when they are in the wrong.

“The actions of the Police, creators of hope, will endure only when we are motivated. First, we can be motivating ourselves by our inner God-feeling that irrespective of what anyone says or does we will continue giving hope, then encouragement of the recipient of the hope, the Public, who are the beneficiaries of that hope will also create hope for the people giving the hope. So the actions of the creators and recipients of hope reinforce each other in the hope process,” the IGP illustrated.

The Paul Harris Fellow’s award, considered the highest form of recognition by Rotary Clubs, acknowledges individuals whether Rotarians or members of the community, who have made remarkable contributions to society. Notable recipients include former US President Jimmy Carter

Mr Glenn D Permuy

A Senior Executive for enhancement and innovation at the World Federation of Youth Clubs (WFYC), USA, Mr Glenn D. Permuy, has lauded the significance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

According to Mr Permuy, STEM did not only impart knowledge, but it also fostered a mindset of curiosity, critical thinking and problem-solving, which would enable the youth to critically appreciate challenges and develop innovative and sustainable solutions for a brighter future.

This was contained in a speech read on his behalf at the grand finale of the 2024 edition of the Maths and Science quiz competition organised by the Boys and Girls Club of Ghana, Anomabo, in partnership with WFYC.

Speaking on the theme: “Promoting Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills at Basic Schools: The Role of Stem Education”, he indicated that “Through STEM, we are not just teaching our children what to think, but more importantly, how to think”.

He added that in the rapidly evolving world, the role of STEM education has never been more critical as it paved the way for innovation and solving complex problems that communities faced.

Mr Permuy, therefore, acknowledged the fact that the WFYC-MSQ Competition exemplified the essence of passion for learning and discovery among the youth, which WFCY endeavoured to achieve.

“I am proud to be part of a community that values and promotes such educational endeavours. Your participation, enthusiasm and support showcase a collective commitment to empowering our future leaders, scientists, engineers and innovators”, Mr Permuy said.

Editorial: Detention of patients for non-payment of bills must stop!

0
Editorial

The Director in charge of the Global Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Programme at the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Ibrahima Socé Fall, is quoted by the graphiconline.com as saying that health facilities in Ghana and other parts of Africa should stop detaining patients who are unable to pay their medical bills after treatment.

According to him,  the detention of patients and family members for non-payment of medical bills was not only  harmful to their health, but it also contravened international law especially human rights laws.

Just recently, The Chronicle published a story of a 15-year old student, Josephine Koryo Nartey, who is in her final year at the Manya Krobo Senior High School at Odumase Krobo, in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region, who was detained in the hospital because of her single mother’s inability to pay her medical bill of GH¢15,000.00.

Josephine Nartey had gone to buy drugs at a nearby Pharmacy when a motorbike crashed into her, resulting in serious head injuries. She was first rushed to the St Martin’s Hospital at Agormanya in the same municipality. Due to the gravity of the injury, she was referred to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) to continue with treatment.

Though the specialist hospital accepted to treat the poor girl, she was detained after she had been discharged because her mother could not pay the medical bill. This is a case of hit and run accident, where the motor cyclist absconded, but the mother had to suffer the double agony because she could not pay for the bill.

Looking at the case we have just referenced, The Chronicle fully agrees with the concerns of the WHO Director because the issue raises serious concerns about healthcare accessibility and human rights violations.

The current economic condition does not make it easy for people to even afford three square mealsa day, let alone talk about medical bills. The National Health Insurance (NHIS) too isn’t favourable in conditions like this.

The fact that her (Josephine) mother had to endure the distress of seeing her daughter detained due to financial constraints is a reminder of the inequalities prevalent in our healthcare system.

The Chronicle finds it imperative for the government, the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service to consider comprehensive policy reforms that prioritise healthcare accessibility and affordability for all citizens, especially the economically disadvantaged.

One key aspect that requires immediate attention is the need to establish more equitable payment plans that accommodate the financial capabilities of patients and their families.

Furthermore, the effectiveness and coverage of health insurance schemes, such as the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) need to be reassessed and strengthened to ensure that they adequately support individuals in need of medical care. The current situation, where health insurance is not effectively addressing the financial burden faced by patients, calls for urgent interventions.

Equally important is the implementation of guidelines that prohibit the detention of patients solely based on their inability to pay medical bills. Healthcare facilities should prioritise patient care and well-being, rather than resorting to punitive measures that exacerbate the suffering of vulnerable individuals.

Healthcare should be a fundamental right accessible to all, irrespective of their economic status, and it is time to address these longstanding issues for the benefit of every Ghanaian citizen.

And They Say, We Are Uncivilized – Assisted Suicide Downloading

0
Feature

After first exploring its coast in 1471, some strange strangers, in 1482, landed on the soil of a country to named Gold Coast, later christened Ghana. They were Portuguese and Catholics, and they first celebrated Mass in a village called Edina which they renamed El-Mina, or The Mine in their language.

Since setting foot here, the White Man thinks we are primitive and need to be made civilized us, even after sixty-seven years of independence.

They say, it was uncivilized to breast-feed a baby and they introduced baby formulas to us, like famous Lactogen. Breastfeeding was regarding a little disgusting and primitive.

Later, they came back to tell us that breasts-feeding a baby for its first six months was after all, very necessary and important for the baby’s growth. WHO came out in 2001 to recommended that mothers worldwide exclusively breastfeed infants for the first 6 months for them to achieve optimal growth, development and health. Thereafter, they should be given nutritious complementary foods as breastfeeding continues up to the age of 2 years or beyond.

They say, it is primitive to eat with fingers so they forced us to use cutlery set, making it almost impossible to eat our fufu, until as for that, we rebelled. Later, one of their top fast-food joints, Kentucky Fried Chicken, KFC, came to tell how finger-linking good, food taste when eaten with fingers.

By the way, they will completely remove the peel of banana and with unwashed hands they hold the pulp and eat it.

They said we walk about with no cloths on. Well, we always are well covered at the appropriate areas of our body, and mind you we are talking about living in conditions of over 30ᵒ Celsius. But what do we see, whenever their temperature hits 22ᵒ Celsius? They strip almost naked and walk about the streets, pouring water on themselves. And they say we are uncivilised.

When they came, they claimed our way of worship was backward and they taught us about the Living God.

Well, almost everything they taught us about this God, were already accepted by us. Yes, we never called the names of our gods, in vain; we dared not disrespect our elders; we were not to steal, kill or bear false witness; as for adultery, one could get banned from the community for life, if ever caught in the act. We accepted the new religion and soon realised that their God is the same Great Spirit we worship, the Most Supreme God, who is above all others.

Then one fine day, these Whites came to tell us that the law under Adultery which is against immoral and impure sex, had lots of typo errors. So, we must forget about them and do exactly the opposite by getting involved in LGBTQ+ activities.

As for this we are saying, unless God Himself comes down to speak on behalf of LGBTQ+ activities, we shall not accept. Not even the angels can come down to convince us otherwise, because St. Paul said any angel who comes to preach a different Gospel, we should not mind him.

While we are still debating this, we hear that the Whites, have come out with something they called, euthanasia. It is the act of deliberately ending a sick person’s life to relieve suffering. This can be classified as voluntary, where a person makes a conscious decision to die and asks for help to do so; and involuntary, where another person takes that decision on their behalf, because they may be in coma or something.

Where is faith in God? Where is faith in miracles? Anyway, these Whites are no longer believing in God.

While we could not comprehend this, there is another thing being downloaded. It is assisted suicide, an act of deliberately assisting another person to kill themselves, by providing them with lethal drugs.

This assisted suicide is being pushed in Europe, with a facility called Dignitas, already established in Switzerland. Some people are pushing for it in the UK.

Most Rev. John Wilson, of the Catholic Archdiocese of Southwark, England, in his pastoral message, told all Catholics that the Church believes and teaches that every life is valuable, regardless of one’s physical or mental state or ability.

As Christians, we must regard every human life as a gift from God, not a commodity we manipulate and dominate. There are moral and spiritual threats to the earliest stage of human life, with abortion and now at its end, through assisted suicide.

St John Paul II, said the response to “cure if possible” should be “always to care.” In the Catholic Church, incurable does not mean un-care-able.

Archbishop John Wilson, said we are stewards, not owners, of the life God entrusted to us, and it is not ours to dispose of.

Assuming this assisted suicide is pushed on us, as they are doing with LGBTQ+, will people not murder others and plead in court that it was assisted suicide? After all, the deceased will not be in court to testify.

Life is a right, which must be welcomed, and not death, which must be administered.

Let us say no to euthanasia and assisted suicide as we are saying no to LGBTQ+ activities. God gave us the gift of life and we must do with life as He wants.

A dilapidated toilet facility for Sokwai Community

Residents of Sokwai in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region have resorted to Open Defecation for lack of toilet facilities, Mr. Collins Nsiah Junior, Assembly Member of Pasro-Sokwai Electoral Area has disclosed.

Sokwai is a farming community and residents have for years been attending to nature’s call in the bush and open places.

According to Collins Nsiah, the community could be affected by cholera if the lack of toilet situation is not solved to improve on sanitation, especially when the rains are about to set in.

He said the faecal matter would be washed into the creeks that serve as the source of drinking water and for domestic use and described the environmental situation, especially lack of toilets in the community, as a threat to their health.

The Assembly member disclosed that the District Assembly was yet to respond to an appeal to provide basic amenities, especially toilet facilities in the community.

He called for the intervention of the government, philanthropists and other stakeholders to help address the challenge by providing them with modern toilet facilities to improve upon sanitation in the area.
