Newmont supports Maternal Healthcare with donation to Osu Govt Maternity Home

0

In a significant move to improve maternal healthcare in Accra, Newmont’s Africa Business Unit has donated essential medical equipment worth One Hundred and Thirty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢130,000.00)to the Osu Government Maternity Home, one of the oldest maternity facilities in the Greater Accra region.

The donation is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to support local health institutions and strengthen maternal and child health services.

The Osu Government Maternity Home, which has been providing critical care to mothers and newborns for over 90 years, is a cornerstone of the Korle Klottey Municipality.

It serves over 22,000 people in the municipality. However, like many public healthcare facilities, it faces challenges in accessing modern medical equipment.

Data from the World Bank shows that Ghana’s maternal mortality rate remains high at 263 deaths per 100,000 live births.

Causes of maternal mortality include postpartum hemorrhage, sepsis, hypertensive disorder, and other socioeconomic factors such as poor access to healthcare and a lack of skilled birth attendants.

Recognising this gap in maternal healthcare delivery, Newmont’s Women and Allies Business Resource Group, an employee-led group that works to empower women and advocate for equal opportunities among female employees, launched a charity project aimed at providing direct support to the Osu Government Maternity Home.

Through generous and voluntary efforts, Newmont’s workforce raised funds to support the facility. In support of the initiative, the company matched the contributions, resulting in the purchase of the equipment and items worth GH¢130,000.

These funds were used to procure and deliver essential medical equipment to the maternity home, including an ultrasound machine, delivery beds, examination trays, forceps, blood pressure apparatus, lamps, and writing tables, among others.

At the handover ceremony, Ms. Amma Benneh-Amponsah, the Head of People for Newmont’s Africa Business Unit, emphasised the importance of supporting healthcare in the community. “We are honoured to support the Osu Government Maternity Home, a place that has done so much for generations. We hope these items will provide a level of support to the amazing team here, so that you can continue to deliver the essential services that every mother who walks through your doors with their babies so dearly requires.

“This initiative is a testament to what we can achieve when a group of people come together with a shared purpose. It reflects Newmont’s purpose of creating value and improving lives, as well as some of the values we hold dear, such as safety, responsibility and inclusion.” Ms. Benneh-Amponsah added.

For the dedicated staff of the maternity home, this donation could not have come at a better time. The facility has been operating with limited resources for years, and this boost from Newmont is expected to significantly improve the experience for patients and healthcare workers alike.

President Akufo-Addo Commissions Jamestown Fishing Harbour

In a historic moment for the coastal community of Jamestown, Accra, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially commissioned the long-awaited Jamestown Fishing Harbour on Friday, September 13, 2024.

The completion of this significant project, which has been in the making for decades, represents the fulfilment of a promise made by the Akufo-Addo government to revitalise Ghana’s fishing industry and improve the livelihoods of local fisher folks.

The Jamestown Fishing Harbour, a state-of-the-art facility, has been eagerly anticipated since the 1960s, when discussions of constructing a modern fishing port for the area first began.

For years, these plans remained unrealised, leaving the people of Jamestown and the broader Ga community with unmet expectations.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the President emphasised the symbolic and practical importance of the new facility.

“This moment is the culmination of years of effort and the realisation of a long-held dream that began as far back as 1965. Promises were made, hopes were raised, but no substantial action was taken—until now. Today, we move beyond rhetoric to action,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo, who has personal ties to the Jamestown area, having grown up in the nearby Korle Wokon, expressed his deep satisfaction in bringing this project to fruition.

He recalled the day in December 2018, when he cut the sod for the project and the naysayers who doubted the port’s completion.

“In October 2020, I returned to inspect the progress and today, here we stand together, as witnesses to the fulfilment of that commitment,” he noted with pride.

The newly constructed fishing harbour is expected to transform the local economy, generating employment, improving the lives of fisher folks and boosting domestic fish production.

The President highlighted the socio-economic significance of the project, stating “This port is a symbol of hope, proof of the resilience and determination of our people and a concrete manifestation of what we can achieve when we work together for the common good.”

The harbour, which is equipped with a range of modern facilities, is designed to address some of the long-standing challenges faced by Ghana’s artisanal fishing sector.

These include the safe launching and landing of canoes, improved fish handling and enhanced storage capacities.

Notable features of the port include; a 200-capacity fish market, a 60-tonne ice-making plant, a 200-tonne cold store and market stalls, among others.

A Daycare centre has also been included to support women traders, allowing them to conduct their business with peace of mind, knowing their children are safe.

“This is not just a building, it is an investment in the future of this community. The inclusion of Daycare centres demonstrates a governance of compassion, one that empowers women and strengthens families,” President Akufo-Addo remarked.

The commissioning of the Jamestown Fishing Harbour follows the successful completion of the Elmina Fishing Port in May 2023 another landmark project under the Akufo-Addo administration, aimed at transforming Ghana’s fishing industry.

The President underscored his government’s understanding of the critical role agriculture and fisheries play in Ghana’s economy, noting that the fishing sector supports over 2.6 million livelihoods and contributed US$263.2 million to the nation’s GDP in 2020.

“This harbour is not just a monument to progress, it is a vital lifeline for socio-economic empowerment, job creation and improved livelihoods. We are investing in superior infrastructure to reduce post-catch losses, improve fish catches and reduce our dependence on imported fish,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

During the construction phase of the Jamestown Fishing Harbour, some 500 direct jobs were created, with expectations for more, as the facility becomes fully operational.

The harbour’s completion is also expected to revitalise the entire community, sparking economic activity and growth in the region.

In his speech, President Akufo-Addo extended his gratitude to the Ga Mantse, the chiefs, and the people of Jamestown for their unwavering faith in his government. He also acknowledged the support of the People’s Republic of China, particularly President Xi Jinping, for their contributions to the project. Additionally, the President commended Ambassador Edward Boateng and former High Commissioner Isaac Osei for their instrumental roles in bringing the project to life.

The Jamestown Fishing Harbour is a landmark achievement in President Akufo-Addo’s broader agenda of infrastructural development aimed at improving Ghana’s socio-economic landscape. As the people of Jamestown celebrate the fulfilment of this long-standing promise, the harbour stands as a beacon of hope, progress and prosperity for the future.

Justin Timberlake Given Community Service In Drunk Driving Case

Justin Timberlake

Pop star Justin Timberlake was handed a sentence of community service on Friday after he changed his plea to guilty following his arrest for drunk driving, US media reported. On June 18, the 43-year-old entertainer was pulled over in the town of Sag Harbor, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of New York City, after police observed his BMW go through a stop sign and struggle to stay within road lanes.

Sag Harbor Village Justice Court justice Carl Irace handed Timberlake a community service sentence and ordered the star to make a public statement after the singer pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of driving while alcohol impaired, broadcaster NBC reported.

The charge is a traffic violation that carries a fine between $300 to $500 and a 90-day license suspension.

Timberlake told Irace that he would be willing to perform between 25 and 40 hours of community service to settle the case, NBC reported.

“I try to hold myself to a very high standard for myself. This was not that. I found myself in a position where I could have made a different decision,” Timberlake said outside the court.

“Even if you’ve had one drink, don’t get behind the wheel of a car, there’s so many alternatives,” added Timberlake, who wore a dark cardigan and a pearl necklace.

“I grew up in a small town so I can appreciate and understand the strain, or unique nature, of what this must have been for the people of Sag Harbor… I’m very grateful and I thank them.”

Sag Harbor is an upmarket community in the exclusive Hamptons, notorious for its decadent parties and a favorite destination for the rich and famous, many of whom have summer houses on Long Island.

The officer who pulled over the “Selfish” singer said he was in no fit state to drive, although Timberlake has always insisted he had only one martini at the American Hotel during an evening with friends.

“His eyes were bloodshot and glassy, a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from his breath, he was unable to divide attention, he had slowed speech, he was unsteady afoot, and he performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests,” the police report said.

Timberlake’s lawyer, Edward Burke Jr, said that the star was respectful during his encounter with police.

Guru wins appeal, back in Legon SRC Presidential race

Guru

Hiplife icon Maradona Adjei Yeboah, popularly known as Guru NKZ is back in the University of Ghana’s  SRC presidential race.

Guru filed a petition against the University of Ghana’s Student Representative Council (SRC) Electoral Commission following his disqualification from the presidential race.

The disqualification was based on the Hiplife icon’s non-resident status, a violation of Article 30, which mandates that candidates must be campus residents and eligible to contest for a Junior Common Room (JCR) position in their hall.

During vetting, Guru and his running mate, Jeffery Adu Yeboah, confirmed that they were not residents of any hall, leading to their disqualification.

In response, his legal team lodged a petition with the Electoral Commission and the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, seeking a review of the decision.

Additionally, an interim injunction was submitted to the Judicial Board, requesting a temporary halt to the electoral process until a proper hearing and ruling can be made.

After the hearing, the appeals Board on September 15, 2024, set aside the disqualification by a unanimous decision of 7-0.

In the ruling, the board added that Guru and his running mate’s name should be added to the list of the Presidential candidates.

The balloting for all candidates vetted by the vetting committee is scheduled for Monday, September 16.

8 dead after attempting to cross English Channel from France to the UK

English Channel crossing

At least eight people have died overnight while attempting to cross the English Channel from France to the United Kingdom, according to French authorities.

The regional prefect, Jacques Billant, said the incident happened at about 1am (23:00 GMT on Saturday) off the coast of the northern town of Ambleteuse.

“The toll was terrible, with eight people reported dead,” he told the press near the site of the accident.

Six survivors were hospitalised, including a 10-month-old baby with hypothermia, he added.

The boat had set off from the Slack River that flows into the sea between the towns of Wimereux and Ambleteuse. Billant said 59 people from Eritrea, Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan, Egypt, and Iran were on board.

The announcement comes less than two weeks after 12 people were killed after a boat they were travelling in capsized during an attempted crossing of the Channel.

According to British officials, more than 22,000 migrants and refugees have arrived in England by crossing the Channel since the beginning of this year.

24 killed in Haiti fuel tanker explosion

At least 40 people are thought to have been injured

Twenty-four people have been killed in Haiti after a fuel tanker exploded, according to local authorities.

Dozens more people have been left seriously injured – some suffering burns to 80% of their bodies, according to Haitian Prime Minister Garry Coville.

The incident happened on Saturday near the commune of Miragoane, about 100km (60 miles) west from the capital Port-au-Prince.

According to media reports, the tanker collided with another vehicle and began leaking fuel onto the road. The explosion happened as people were rushing to collect the spilt fuel.

“It’s a horrible scene we’ve just witnessed,” Mr Coville said at Port-au-Prince airport’s tarmac, where some of the injured were arriving.

He vowed to do everything in his power to ensure the victims received the medical care they needed.

Emmanuel Pierre, head of Haiti’s civil protection agency, told the AFP news agency that the original death toll of 16 was later revised up when more bodies were found near the explosion site.

It is not the first time there have been multiple fatalities in Haiti due to a gas tanker explosion.

More than 60 people died following a similar incident in 2021.

Haiti has been undergoing a period of severe violence and instability, as the government battles violent gangs that have taken control of parts of the country.

Earlier this month, the Haitian authorities expanded a state of emergency.

Netanyahu warns Yemen’s Houthis face a ‘heavy price’ as missile lands in Israel

Smoke billows after a missile which the IDF says was launched from Yemen

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned Yemen’s Houthis face a “heavy price” after the group fired a missile deep into Israel.

The projectile was fired from Yemen toward Israel at 6am local time this morning, according to the Israel Defense Forces who added that it “most likely fragmented in mid-air.” The missile fell in an open area in central Israel, with no injuries reported.

Videos and images shared by the Israel Fire and Rescue Authority on Telegram show large plumes of smoke billowing into the air over an open field, and shattered glass inside a train station in Modi’in, a city between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

A spokesman for the Iran-backed Houthis military spokesman confirmed the attack, claiming that the group used a “new hypersonic ballistic missile” and warning that Israel should expect more such strikes as the first anniversary of the October 7 attack by Hamas approaches.

Despite months of tensions it is a rare instance of a missile penetrating as far as central Israel, normally safe for civilians. “We are in a multi-arena campaign against Iran’s evil axis that strives to destroy us,” said Netanyahu, speaking ahead of a cabinet meeting. Israeli police said they were working with the police bomb squad in the Shfela area, also known as the Judaean Foothills, where an interceptor fragment had fallen. Authorities are now isolating the impact site and scanning for additional interceptor remains, police said.

Sirens rang across central and northern Israel, the military said, and sirens were also sounded at Tel Aviv airport, the airport’s spokesperson told CNN. Videos on social media showed passengers running to find shelter.

US denies claim CIA plotted to kill Venezuela president

0
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro

The United States has dismissed claims made by Venezuela that the CIA plotted to assassinate President Maduro and other top officials.

Three US citizens, two Spaniards and one Czech national have been arrested on suspicion of plotting to destabilise the country, the Interior Minister said.

Calling the detainees “mercenaries”, Diosdado Cabello claimed that the CIA “is leading the operation” and that hundreds of weapons had been seized.

The US rejected the claims, which come after Washington placed 16 senior government officials under sanctions, as “categorically false”.

A spokesperson for the State Department said a US military member was being held and noted “unconfirmed reports of two additional US citizens detained in Venezuela.”

Cabello responded by saying the detainees had contacted “French mercenaries” from Eastern Europe and were involved in “an operation to try to attack” Venezuela.

He added that “more than 400 rifles were seized” and accused the detainees of plotting “terrorist acts.”

The Venezuelan government said the Spaniards detained were linked to Madrid’s National Intelligence Centre (CNI).

Spanish government sources have told local media the pair do not belong to the intelligence organisation.

“Spain denies and categorically rejects any insinuation that it is involved in a political destabilisation operation in Venezuela,” a source told AFP.

The Czech Republic has yet to react the claims.

In a news conference on Saturday Cabello said: “The CIA is leading this operation, and that does not surprise us but they, the National Intelligence Centre of Spain, have always maintained a low profile knowing that the CIA operates in this area.”

The allegations come amid a feud between the Maduro government and both the US and Spain stemming from Maduro’s disputed victory in July’s election.

Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE), which is closely aligned with the government, declared Maduro the winner of the vote, but has not published detailed voting tallies.

Washington announced sanctions targeting “key officials involved in Maduro’s fraudulent and illegitimate claims of victory and his brutal crackdown on free expression following the election”.
