NDC on EC, Another Excuse for Losing an Election?

0
Opinion

After the 2020 General Elections, the NDC made hell break loose, when it insisted that the presidential election was rigged in favour of the incumbent president, H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo, who was on the NPP ticket.

Well-meaning Ghanaians, advised the NDC that it should resort to the court. This was at first very hard on the opposition party, because in 2013 when NPP contested the presidential election in the Supreme Court, the NDC told Ghanaians, that any fool can go to court.

To avoid being called a fool, the NDC decided to use its youths to invade the Electoral Commission on a suicide mission, to force the reversal of the results, meanwhile the gurus of the party went to celebrate in a member’s house.

While they were feasting and making merry with the drinking of cocktails in another side of town, the story at the EC office was very different. The NDC youth were served a cocktail of tear-gas, water-canon and truncheon butting.

Finally succumbing to the national out-cry that it must go to court, just as the NPP did in 2013, the NDC took its chance, but for a different reason.

It went not to contest the electoral results but to ask the Supreme Court to compel the Electoral Commissioner to announce the results, professionally and in an office wear.

The NDC’s first witness admitted that all the results read out by the EC, were correct. Two other witnesses however insisted that the elections were rigged, but their definition of rigging was entirely new and strange. While one defined rigging as being sent from the strong room on an errand and the results announced in his absence, the other defined it as being served tea without biscuits in the EC office.

The NDC knew it lost the presidential elections and yet it threw its youths in the streets, to be beaten up for their lawlessness.

A few months to Election 2024, the EC embarked on exercises to get the voters’ register in readiness for the December 7 General Elections. The NDC raised alarm that the EC had, among some irregularities, transferred over 200,000 names without the people knowing.  The EC came out to explain that it was work in progress and that those affected had already being transferred in 2020, so there was no cause for alarm. The EC promised to let the NDC have the final product, long before Election Day, December 7, 2024. In all this, however, the NDC is not able to provide evidence to its allegations.

Is the NDC complaining about transfer of names without the people knowing? We all know what happened during the Rawlings era, when multiples of hundreds of thousands of people go to their designated polling station to vote, only to be told their names were not in the register. Some people just give up voting, while others move from polling station to polling to locate their names, but all in vain.

And all this worked in favour of the NDC.

Charlotte Osei, the immediate past Electoral Commissioner who is the darling of the NDC, gave a testimony that she chanced upon one of her deputies, uploading names unto the voters’ register in his office. Apart from the fact that this is legally wrong, the crime took place long after registration of voters had closed. This criminality has never been condemned by the NDC to this day.

Strangely, today the NDC is up and about doing the same things it had condemned the NPP and Ghanaians of, in 2015 and 2016.

It will be helpful to reproduce what Alhaji Salifu Hadara reminded us of, asNDC’s defense of the EC, during the Mahama regime.

In 2015, Ofosu Ampofo told Ghanaians that it was absurdity for the NPP to demand for auditing of the voters’ register for the 2016 General Elections. In 2016, Asiedu Nketiah, said all those who believed the EC had lost credibility, have a problem.

In 2016, John Mahama said that the consistent criticism of the EC and unspeakable things said about its chairperson, was a way that the NPP was using to prepare the minds of its supporters, that when it loses the elections, the EC could be blamed for not being neutral. He went to add that those who were saying that the EC was going to rig the election, were proclaiming absurd nonsense because the EC was one of the best in the world. He stated that people should leave the EC in peace to do its work.

All these can be summed up to say emphatically that the NDC has nothing against the EC, but it is just using these baseless allegations that should it lose the 2024 Elections, it will be blamed on the EC.

One thing to note here is that the NPP challenged the EC for using the NHIS card as a form of identity to be able to register. The NHIS card was available for both Ghanaians and non-Ghanaians, so an alien can register to vote. This was what the NDC attacked the NPP on.

I will appeal to the youth, that they should be mindful that the same NDC who pushed them to clash with security agents at the EC office in 2016, while the gurus went enjoying themselves at a party, is today pushing them into another clash.

Ashanti Regional Coordinator for DRIP, Kwabena Senkyere, speaking at the event

The Ashanti Regional Coordinator for the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Mr. Kwabena Senkyere, has urged the electorate who benefit from the DRIP initiative to vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming election, slated for December 7, 2024.

MrSenkyere does not understand why an individual will benefit from such intervention and still vote against the government of the day.

“Where your DRIP machines are is where your votes must go. If we have brought these machines to your community for road development, do you need to vote against us?” the Ashanti regional DRIP Coordinator declared at the launch of the Amansie Central DRIP equipment, which was held at the forecourt of the Amansie Central District Assembly, in Jacobu.

He noted that the NPP has brought together all factors of production for the DRIP to be successful, hence the need for voters to extend their appreciation for the gesture, by voting for the elephant.

“Bawumia is providing iron rods, cement, chippings, twenty barrels and diesel because where your DRIP machines are, is where your votes must go.”

Authorities officially cutting the tape to symbolise the launch of the DRIP equipment in Amansie Central

Describing how the implementation of DRIP has been crafted to ensure effectiveness and efficiency, Kwabene Senkyere, who spoke in the twi dialect, said “We do not want a scenario where one will ask that they are ready to buy fuel for the machines to work on their roads. Bawumia has budgeted for that.

MrSenkyere, who is the former assembly member for Dichemso and former first vice chairman for Ashanti regional NPP, said at the function that roads would be constructed at every nook and cranny of Amansie Central.

He added that in the course of the programme, they may have to construct a bridge, so provisions for iron rods have been made for such eventualities.

On the number of jobs DRIP has created in the Ashanti region, Kwabena Senkyere disclosed that the programme has created 2,780 in the Ashanti region alone.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Amansie Central, Michael Donkor, expressed appreciation to the government for the equipment, emphasising that the equipment will go a long way in addressing the road construction challenges.

According to him, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has introduced many intervention programmes in its quest to develop Ghana. He lauded the outgoing DCE, AKwasi Gyamfi, for extending electricity to the nook and cranny of the district.

The Amansie Central DCE noted that the Akufo Addo administration has done significantly well in the agricultural sector, in that it has helped to make food abundant.

This feat, Michael Donkor attributed to the introduction of a flagship Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) program, an intervention which has created employment for a number of Ghanaians.

Whilst MrDonkor admitted there are challenges associated with the Ghanaian economy, food is available, owing to the good agricultural policies introduced by the NPP government under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo.

He subsequently appealed to the residents of Jacobu to unite and vote for the NPP government to continue their good work for Ghana to develop.

On cocoa production, the Amansie Central DCE noted that the government has invested so much in the cocoa sector, despite the implications of the illegal mining, which is known as galamsey.

The Parliamentary Candidate for Odotobri constituency, Mr. Francis Mbeah, lauded the government for the DRIP program, describing it as unprecedented in the annals of Ghana.

According to Mbeah, transportation and for that matter roads play a pivotal role in the development of the area. In view of this, he expressed optimism that DRIP will help Amansie Central, which is noted for bad roads, change the narrative.

He called on the masses to rally behind the elephant in the upcoming polls. Nana Baffour Agyare II, the Kontihene for Jacobu expressed appreciation to the government for the gadgets since it will go a long way in developing their roads.

While commenting on the development, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun reemphasised the commitment of the force to tackling every form of crime, criminality and corruption, extending to those involved in this economic sabotage.

DCE Maurice Jonas Wood being assisted by Nana Ahenema to commission the DRIP equipment

Nana Asare Bediako, chief of Akrofuom, and the residents have commended the government following the presentation of District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) equipment to improve their road networks.

Nana Ahenemahene, on behalf of Nana Bediako, at the inaugural ceremony at the forecourt of the Assembly, commended the government for implementing the District Roads Improvement Programme (DRIP).

He noted that the initiative has come at a time when the residents have been complaining about the poor nature of their roads, resulting in post-harvest losses for farmers and affecting businesses.

Nana Ahenemahene said the assembly of such equipment is unprecedented and commended the president for such a bold initiative.

According to him, the initiative is the first of its kind in the country and he assured that the traditional authorities in the district would liaise with the Assembly and the committee in charge of supervising the operations of the equipment to ensure that they are well maintained and used for the intended purpose.

The Akrofuom district had six pieces of road maintenance equipment, which include a grader, wheel loader, water bowser, tipper truck, backhoe and roller.

Mr. Maurice Jonas Wooden, the Chief Executive of the Akrofuom district, mentioned that most of the roads in the district are unmotorable and a source of worry for political leaders and residents alike.

According to him, work will begin in earnest to give a facelift to the deplorable nature of the roads in the community while contractors move to the site to work on the Akrofuom to Obuasi stretch, which has received condemnation from residents because of its poor state.

The DCE called on residents to reward the NPP government with a resounding victory in the 2024 general elections for more to be done when the mandate of the government is renewed.

Mr. Alexander Blankson, Member of Parliament for the Akrofuom constituency, said the bad nature of roads in the Akrofuom constituency has caused him sleepless nights, stressing that he spends a chunk of his Common Fund on repairing deplorable roads in the constituency.

He disclosed that his office would make sure the equipment is used for their intended purpose for the benefit of the constituency.

Otumfuo implores women to seek prompt medical attention for breast cancer

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has urged women to seek prompt medical attention for breast cancer treatment when they notice changes in their breasts.According to him, breast cancer surgery can be less expensive when the problem is identified early and treated.

Professor Nana Mensah Bonsu, Asakyihene, gave the advice when she represented the Asantehene at the opening ceremony of the International Center for the Study of Breast Cancer Subtypes (ICSBCS), 8th Annual International Symposium by Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM), Cornell Medicine Breast Surgery, and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

The theme was: “Improving Breast and Gynecological Cancers Management and Outcomes in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC), while the theme for the ICSBCS 20th Anniversary Celebrations was: “20 Years of Excellent Collaborative Breast Cancer Research and Management.”

The Asantehene urged traditional healers and herbalists to refer women with new breast symptoms to the teaching hospitals and breast clinics when they notice the disease, believing that it could save lives and keep our families intact.

Dele Lisa A. Newman of the New York Presbyterian Hospital, on behalf of the Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), said they seek to achieve the goal through robust multi-disciplinary discussion and interaction, as well as through enhanced collaboration between the Oncology professionals that are affiliated with the ICSBCS network.

He noted that the mission of the ICSBCS is to reduce the global breast and gynecological cancer burden through advances in research and delivery of care to diverse populations worldwide.

Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah, the Chief Executive Officer of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), disclosed that gender discrimination, stigma, violence, and cultural taboos combine to limit women’s choices in seeking care even where available.

According to him, the recent research conducted proved that there are patterns of breast cancer known as triple-negative breast cancer that are more dangerous among women in West Africa as compared to European and white American women.
