Deputy Governor of Imo State, Mr Eze Madumere

Former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Eze Madumere, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), bringing an end to years of political association with the ruling party.

In a resignation letter personally signed by him and addressed to the APC chairman of Ezinihitte Ward, Mbiere Mbaitoli Local Government Area, Madumere said his decision takes immediate effect, noting that it followed “deep personal reflection” on his journey within the party.

“I write to formally notify you of my decision to resign my membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) effective immediately,” the letter dated March 17, partly read.

He described the move as difficult but necessary, as he seeks to “explore new paths” in his political career.

Madumere expressed appreciation for the relationships he built during his time in the APC, stating his desire to maintain cordial ties with party members.

“The decision, though difficult, has become necessary after a deep personal reflection on my political journey with the party. I sincerely feel it is time for me to explore new paths.

“It is my utmost desire and expectation that we all continue to maintain the cordial relationship that we have built over the years, in our collective desire to build a better Nigeria.

“Thank you for your understanding. Please accept my best wishes always,” he added.

The former deputy governor, however, did not indicate where he would pitch his political tent.

Madumere said his commitment to the collective goal of building a better Nigeria remains unchanged, despite his departure from the party.

Madumere, a seasoned politician, served as Deputy Governor of Imo State from 2015 to 2019 under former Governor Rochas Okorocha.

Government sets March 31 deadline for re-opening of Enugu-Onitsha Expressway

Enugu-Onitsha Expressway

The Federal Government has declared that the long-troubled Enugu–Onitsha Expressway is fast shedding its grim past, as it intensifies a sweeping infrastructure upgrade across the South-East under President Bola Tinubu.

The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, made the declaration during an inspection of ongoing projects in Enugu, including the expressway and the Eke-Obinagu Flyover, where he expressed confidence that the era of consistent fatal accidents, endless traffic, and public frustration along the road is coming to an end.

“I’m going round the six geopolitical zones assessing what is possibly to be commissioned before May 29 by Mr. President. There are mega projects that the President will be available for before May 29, and we mean it,” the minister said on Monday.

Once regarded as one of the most dangerous highways in the region, the Enugu–Onitsha road had for years been plagued by tanker explosions, loss of lives, and economic disruptions.

But Umahi said decisive intervention by the Tinubu administration has changed the trajectory.

“Now, this route, the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, you recall that when we came on board, every day, people were talking about this road.

“There were a lot of tanker accidents, a lot of people died, and so forth. But my joy is that the whole thing is a past story, because the President has swung into action,” he stated.

The minister further disclosed that the dual carriageway, which spans 107 kilometres on each side, is undergoing a major structural shift, with a significant portion being converted from asphalt to concrete to ensure durability.

He added that the same approach is being extended to sections in Anambra State, including the head bridge axis, where an initial asphalt design is being replaced with concrete pavement to align with modern highway standards.

Umahi further disclosed that beyond reconstruction, the project is also being enhanced with solar-powered street lighting and environmental features aimed at improving safety and sustainability.

Plaintiffs in Akropong & Kunsu land case file appeal … Against entire Kumasi High Court Verdict

0
Nana Appiah Sarfo Kantanka, chief of Akropong Ashanti

Plaintiffs in a case in which they are seeking for a declaration of title to and ownership of all parcels of land situated between Akropong and Kunsu in the Ashanti Region, have filed a notice of appeal before the Court of Appeal in Kumasi.

Yaw Sarfo, Akosua Dufie and Albert Osei-Banahene, Head of the Aduana Family (the plaintiffs) have appealed against the judgment of February 9, 2026 by the High Court in Kumasi, presided over by His Lordship, Abdul- Razak Musah.

The court dismissed the application for committal for contempt because the plaintiffs had not proved a case of contempt beyond reasonable doubt.

It held that the court does not entertain fanciful doubts and that proof need not only reach certainty, but must carry a high degree of probability. But the plaintiffs expressed dissatisfaction with the whole decision of the Court in the February 9, 2026 judgment.

Counsel for the plaintiffs/appellants, James Asamoah, said the judgment in question was against the weight of the affidavit evidence on record and that the trial High Court judge failed to exercise his inherent jurisdiction judicially and judiciously.

They prayed the Appellate Court to set aside and reverse the judgment of the High Court, hoping that the Court of Appeal will make its own orders that are fair, just and equitable based on the affidavit evidence on record.

In the substantive matter before the Mankranso District Court, the plaintiffs had filed a motion of notice seeking an order to commit Nana Appiah Sarfo Kantanka, chief of Akropong Ashanti, Nana Ampofo Twumasi, caretaker chief (Odikro) of Dwenewoho community for contempt of court.

The five co-defendants are Nana Kwadwo Asuman Appiah Kubi, Abdullah Yaqun, Opanin Kwaku Appiah, Abdulai Sani and Kwadwo Adu alias Thommy.

The Mankranso District Court had ordered the defendants, their assigns and agents be restrained from undertaking any form of activities or any development or cultivating  or alienating any part of the land in dispute, till the final determination of the suit.

The plaintiffs were seeking damages for trespass, recovery of possession and perpetual injunction to restrain the defendants, their assigns and agents from interfering with the title, ownership and possession of Aduana Royal family of Yabi, that acquired the said land from the then chief of Akropong, Nana Kwabena Sarfo in 1925.

The court heard that the first defendant was undertaking illegal mining on the land while the substantive case was pending before the court.

As a result, the plaintiffs filed a motion on notice for interlocutory injunction to restrain the defendants and their agents from undertaking any illegal mining activities on the land in dispute.

They claimed the illegal mining activities on the land by the second defendant and the use of heavy earth moving machines, including excavators, had caused waste to the disputed land and impacted negatively on the vegetation.

The plaintiffs argued that the vegetation of the land had been destroyed by the intrusion and galamsey activities of the defendants and that unless the Court restrained the defendants the entire land would be destroyed by the time the case is determined.

According to the plaintiffs, they had suffered loss and damages from the wrong act of the defendants and that the intervention of the Court was needed to preserve their property from further destruction by the defendants through illegal mining.

They argued that if the defendants are allowed to undertake illegal mining on the said land and the case is determined in their favour, they would have no land to take, hence the need to restrain the defendants till the final determination of the case.

The plaintiffs also argued that if the defendants are allowed to undertake illegal mining and they (plaintiffs) win the case, the damage cannot be compensated in monetary terms.

The defendants, however, contended that the plaintiffs do not have the requisite capacity to initiate the action against them.

They also claimed that the Akropong Stool had been granted the land since 1958.

Guided by Order 13(1) of the District Court Rules, 2009, the Court upheld the application of the plaintiffs on the grounds that they (plaintiffs) had legal or equitable rights in the disputed land, which if not protected by the court, will cause irreparable damage to them, and accordingly granted the application for injunction to restrain the defendants, until the final determination of the case by the court.

However, the defendants are said to have flouted the December 20, 2023 court order.

In an affidavit in support of the motion on notice filed on October 31, 2025 the plaintiffs stated that despite sufficient awareness of the legal consequences of the restraining order, the respondents have since been using earth moving machines to clear the land in dispute, in order to demarcate for sale to prospective developers while allocating portion of the land to some people to undertake illegal mining on the land.

The plaintiffs argued that the conduct of the respondents in disregarding, disobeying and disrespecting the express orders must be punished.

They said any defiance of court order by a litigant is likely to cast dark clouds on the administration of justice and subjects the court to public ridicule and contempt, hence the need to punish the respondents to serve as a deterrent to like-minded persons.

Usher breaks silence on Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ sex crimes conviction

0
Usher and his pal Sean Diddy Combs

Usher had nothing but positive things to say when asked about his incarcerated pal, Sean “Diddy” Combs.

During an interview with Forbes, the “Nice & Slow” singer was asked to give one word that comes to mind when he thinks of the Bad Boy Records founder, who is currently behind bars after being convicted of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution.

“Legacy,” Usher, 47, simply replied.

Forbes senior writer Jabari Young then questioned if the pop star could explain to young kids about avoiding negativity that “showed up” in Combs’ story today.

“I mean, this might be a bit controversial, but in the same way I think many people choose to look past the reality of what our country is, the standards that we now stand on, we can’t ignore the reality of the history,” Usher responded.

“But in many ways, um, I think certain people are prosecuted and maybe not recognized for the greatness, you know … that they offer,” he added.

“I don’t have anything negative to say about Sean Combs because my experience was not what the world has seen and how he’s been misrepresented.”

Usher said he is “not saying that every man is perfect” and doesn’t “have flaws,” but he can’t ignore the contributions Combs made as a musician.

“I can’t with any sense of humanity not recognize the valuable contributions that this man made for us as Black entrepreneurs, for us as businessmen, for us as people who transition, you know, culture and ideas into something that’s tangible … and becomes business,” he shared.

“So many people benefited from what he created … and I acknowledge that. And that’s why I see him as legacy,” Usher said.

The “OMG” singer, who became a mentee to Combs as a teenager, referred to the disgraced hip-hop mogul as a “really, really hard teacher” whom he was able to learn from “in real time.”

Art is a multi-billion dollar business –Paul Adom-Otchere

Paul Adom-Otchere

Ghanaian broadcaster Paul Adom-Otchere has suggested that Ghana must fundamentally rethink how it approaches the creative arts industry for national development.

Speaking on Joy Prime, he highlighted the economic importance of the cultural and creative industries.

“People have not really connected the fact that arts is a multibillion-dollar business.

I was excited with the Year of Return but I really hope that we are going to get a government one day who really understands that arts is as important as cocoa. The arts is as important as gold. The music industry is as important as anything else,” he said.

He added that production is key in growing theatre in Ghana. Without consistent and structured production, the creative industry cannot grow.

“Recently, I was speaking with the guys who did ‘I Told You So’. And I was telling them that we should have productions in Ghana every weekend. ‘The Lion King’ shows in London every day. Umoja used to show in Johannesburg every day,” he said.

Asked why he did not lobby to occupy a position in the arts sector when his party, the New Patriotic Party was in power, he said he did not he fit the role.

“I don’t feel myself competent as a administrator of the arts. I don’t think I know enough to be an administrator in the area of the arts. But if I have the opportunity, I will give the arts my support,” he said.

He even noted that he once lobbied for George Andah to be Minister of Tourism but people did not buy into his idea because most of them did not see tourism as business.

Finally, he said the solution to a lot of the creative industry’s problems is curating content television in a digitised manner that will be accessible to the Ghanaian.

Dozens of bodies, mostly infants, discovered in Kenya mass grave

0
Some of the bodies appear to have come from a hospital in a neighbouring county

About 32 bodies, mostly children, have been dug up from a mass grave in the western Kenyan town of Kericho as investigations continue into the shocking discovery.

The exhumation was done after the police obtained a court order to retrieve 14 bodies that were initially believed to have been buried at the site.

Government pathologist Richard Njoroge told journalists on Tuesday evening that what they found was “quite unusual” with bodies “stacked in gunny bags”, after a day-long process that was interrupted by heavy rains.

A post-mortem examination is expected to begin on Wednesday, amid calls to promptly identify the bodies and investigate the circumstances of the deaths.

Njoroge said there were “seven adults and 25 children”, with the children being infants and foetuses. A number of body parts were also retrieved.

The pathologist added that some of the bodies appeared to have originated from hospitals and mortuaries but that would be further determined after autopsies.

He noted that the adult remains were highly decomposed, with those of the children less so, which he said indicated that they died at different times.

On Tuesday, homicide detectives and forensic teams, wearing white protective suits, gloves and face masks, worked under tight security as they dug at the site.

Some bodies were recovered intact, while others were found as partial remains and bones, and placed in evidence bags.

Police sealed off the area while a crowd of residents gathered nearby. Some appeared visibly shaken as investigators documented each stage of the exhumation.

London police arrest 2 men in connection with suspected antisemitic arson attack

Scene of suspected antisemitic arson attack

British police have arrested two men following a suspected antisemitic arson attack in which several ambulances belonging to a Jewish volunteer rescue organization were set on fire in north London.

The pair, British nationals aged 47 and 45, were arrested at two separate addresses in the capital on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement Wednesday.

They remain in custody at a London police station and officers are searching the two properties, adds the statement.

The incident took place early Monday morning local time outside a synagogue in a neighborhood home to London’s largest Jewish community.

Flames lit up the night sky and residents of the northern suburb of Golders Green were woken by loud explosions, as dozens of firefighters rushed to the area.

Golders Green is home to many synagogues, schools and kosher restaurants and is known for its large Jewish and Orthodox Jewish community.

On Monday, police said the attack was being treated as an “antisemitic hate crime” and announced that counter-terrorism police were leading the investigation into the attack even though it had not yet been deemed a terrorist incident.

The investigation into the attack is ongoing, with CCTV footage of the incident suggesting that there were at least three people involved, police said Wednesday.

“We fully recognise the local community will still be concerned and our investigation very much remains active and we will continue to work to identify and seek to arrest all of those who may have been involved,” said Commander Helen Flanagan, head of counter terrorism policing London, in the statement.

Estonia and Latvia say territories hit by stray Ukrainian drones

Latvia's Prime Minister Evika Silina

Ukrainian drones entered Estonian and Latvian air spaces from Russia overnight, with one hitting infrastructure and another crashing on land, Tallinn and Riga have said.

One struck the chimney of a power plant in Auvere, Estonia, while another exploded in the southern Kraslava region of Latvia.

No major damage or injuries were reported.

The incident occurred around the same time as Ukraine launched a massive drone attack on the Russian port of Ust-Luga on the Baltic Sea, some 25km (15 miles) away from the Estonian border.

Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal said Ust-Luga was attacked in three waves between 03:00 and 08:00 local time. Baltic air patrols were activated and Estonians received notifications on their phones warning of a “drone threat”.

The country’s security police chief, Margo Palloson, said it was “a Ukrainian drone that deviated from its course, which was possibly affected in Russian airspace.”

Latvian Prime Minister Edgars Rinkevics also confirmed the drone that hit its territory was Ukrainian.

Latvia’s Defence Minister, Andris Spruds, cut short a visit to Ukraine and returned to Latvia in the wake of the incident.

Egils Lescinskis, Latvian deputy chief of the Joint Staff, said the drone “most likely veered off course or was affected by electromagnetic warfare measures protecting some technically important objects”.

When asked whether local residents could feel safe, Lescinskis admitted no-one could “feel completely safe when military operations are taking place in neighbouring countries”.
