Feature: The President Of The National House Of Chiefs And Galamsey

0
Feature

The president of the National House of Chiefs and paramount chief of Sefwi Anhwiaso traditional area, in Western North,Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, has made interesting interjections on galamsey issues in the country.

In September 2020, the Minerals Commission issued a statement asking Akonta Mines, owned by Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) to stop its illegal mining in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserves. With this, critics demanded that the chiefs should ask President Nana Akufo-Addo to punish Chairman Wontumi.

In the following month, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II urged all chiefs not to rely on rumours and that persons with concrete evidence to back the claims that Akonta Mines and others were engaging in illegal mining should make it available for the necessary actions to be taken.

The issue here is a bit confusing. What need for further evidence if an authority comes out with such findings? All that will be required is for investigation to be carried out.

With compliant of galamsey coming to the chiefs, either they send people to the sites and they personally go there to verify for themselves and have the evidence.

Now, with the evidence of galamsey very overwhelming, there are public demonstrations against this illegal act with calls for its total ban. In this month of September, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II came out to oppose the call on banning of illegal mining activities. He stressed that mining plays a crucial role in the country’s economy and argued that halting its operations would have negative consequences.

He has now acknowledged the damages caused by illegal mining, probably he has now got the evidence. His recommendation for efforts to be focused on promoting responsible mining practices, while illegal mining goes on, distorts logic.

There is no way, responsible mining practices can be promoted, while galamsey still goes on. A proverbial Akan adage has it that, one does not stand in thorny bush to remove thorns from his body. To reverse the route of a trailer rolling downhill, you must first stop it.

Ogyeahoho Gyebi II went on to say that mining creates significant employment opportunities, especially for the youth and warned that a blanket ban could lead to widespread job losses.

Heis also claiming that he is against galamsey and will continue to fight against it, but it should not be halted. So, what is he fighting?

As things stand today, galamsey is creating a devastating effecton our environment. Our water supply system is breaking downbecause our water bodies areheavily polluted with toxic chemicals. Portable water supply is in grave danger and soon it will be reduced drastically to the extent that it will be very difficult to get good and clean water anywhere.

As things stand, aquatic life which provides us with fresh water fish and other food, is dying slowly and soon there will be nothing for consumption.

As things stand, our arable lands are disappearing with surface soils excavate to expose the inner soils which are not ideal for cultivation.

As things stand, cocoa farms are gradually disappearing, and oil palm is getting extinct, because of galamsey. Cocoa production will reduce this year to the lowest level in recent years. Ghana may cede its second position in world cocoa production to become number six.

As things stand, Ghana may soon not be able to sell cocoa on the world market, if toxic chemicals are found in our cocoa beans.

As things stand, the youth are dying by drowning in galamsey pits. Many of the youth are stepping out of school to engage in galamsey. And most babies born in galamsey areas are deformed. Most seriously there are outbreaks of chemical-induced diseases which is having a great toll on health.

As things stand, Chinese and other nationals have violated our mineral and immigration laws and besieged our forest, to engage in galamsey. These foreigners do not bother about the devastation they are doing to our environment, something they will not dare to do in their home countries.

Today, some communities in Ghana have been taken over by the Chinese. A case in mind is Wassa Akropong, the capital of the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality in the Western Region, where Chinese are in full charge of trade and businesses with a filling station operating undera Chinese name.

In this town there is the Municipal Assembly and police station, yet the MCE and the police watch on while foreigners violate our laws.

At the rate at which the devastation of our environment is going on, with serious health implications, unless galamsey is completely banned, there will be no way responsible mining can be implemented.  Galamsey must be completely stopped for the land and water bodies to be reclaimed. Then we can implement responsible mining that will not affect our water bodies and land. Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, must know this.

One other thing is, unemployment should not be the excuse for galamsey. With vast arable lands and abundant fresh clean waters, available in their communities, intensive food production can resolve unemployment. If lots of agriculture and aquaculture farms are in operation, factories could be put up to process the food harvested for local consumption and export. And there will be lots of employments available.

Were there cases of unemployment among the youth in the days gone by, when there was little or no galamsey? And to say that the ban on galamsey will affect the country’s economy is not grounded on facts. Galamsey is rather causing serious problems to our economy. Our poisoned water bodies, which are killing aquatic life and our poisoned lands which are not fit for agriculture, will negatively affect our economy. We will soon start importing staple foods that we could have grown here.

It will be another issue if the state is getting revenue from gold, mined under galamsey. Nothing comes from the illegal mines, as the Chinese and other foreigners freely smuggle kilos and kilos of gold to their countries. What Ghana rather gets in return, are poor environment, very sicked nationals, poor water supply, destruction of cocoa and oil palm farms and irresponsible citizens among others. Can this condition guarantee a vibrant and sound economy?

For a case study on irresponsible mining, Ogyeahoho Gyebi II, must take a look at El Salvador. There came a time when 90% of all its water bodies were highly polluted that clean water became more precious than gold. In 2017, under pressure from the Catholic Church and concern groups, all forms of mining were banned.

As President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II must rally all chiefs and support the Asantehene’s call on complete ban on illegal mining.

I will further suggest that instead of the formation of the committee to investigate and report on the galamsey situation, the president, as commander-in-chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, should commandeer all the troops to invade the forests and galamsey sites and arrest everyone engaged in this illegal mining. Those arrested, including foreigners must be made to work and reclaim the fields and water bodies.

To inspire the troops, the gold that is seized should be split into two, in which ever way and one portion given to the military personnel and the other portion, retained by the state. In the event that any military officer wants to sell his gold, he should sell it to the state.

Ghana has reached the stage where workings of a committee will delay actions, while the illegal miners continue the devastation of the environment. If anything, government should take a look at the reports by the Minerals and Forestry Commissions on illegal mining and revisit the Prof. Frimpong Boateng report, to take immediate action. The gestation period between commencement of work of a committee to submission of its findings and recommendation is too long. During this period, more harm will be done by galamsey.

We are in Election year and presidential candidates are out there soliciting for our votes. Each of them must be brought together to debate solely on galamsey and how they would resolve it if voted into power.

During the ban on mining, the state should take immediate steps to educate the youth on responsible mining, even if it means sending a few abroad to take courses insmall-scale mining. After the water bodies and land have been reclaimed and the ban on mining lifted, the state must encourage the formation of small-scale mining under new and strict laws and regulations in order to make mining very responsible.

All Catholics must disengage themselves from galamsey and encourage government to make sure that illegal mining is banned. Catholics have a universal document from Rome, the Laudato Si and every Catholic must abide by this encyclical which is a message from God about our obligation to take good care of our environment.

The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu is the only traditional leader who seems to be making efforts to stop galamsey. I will again suggest that all houses of chiefs in this country, led by Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi II must complement what the Asantehene is doing.

Madrid derby

Atletico Madrid, Real Madridlock horns in derbygame

By Jesse Otoo

Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid both look to maintain their unbeaten run in the Spanish La Liga as they lock horns in the Madrid derby at Metropolitano Stadium on Sunday night.

Real Madrid’s last five matches have produced some incredible goals so far. Atletico Madrid has won two out of their last five meetings, drawn two and lost one.

Diego Simeone and his squad have maintained their unbeaten run this season, though they’ve drawn three of their last six matches. They’ve made some important signings during the transfer window. Their recent results have made it clear that their signings are good. Players like Conor Gallagher, Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth have been improving match after match since they joined.

Diego Simeone is counting on his boys to bounce back after picking a draw on away soil against Rayo Vallecano last weekend.

Although Real Madrid hasn’t lost a match this season, fans aren’t pleased with the way they started the season, with a draw against Mallorca. A game many tipped them to win with a huge goal difference.

Kylian Mbappe and Endrick joining the club boosted the hopes of fans as both players are experienced with match winning mentality. Despite their 3-2 win against Alaves on Tuesday night, the host made couple of defensive errors resulting in Alaves coming from 3-0 down to make it 3-2 in the dying stages of the game. Some mistakes needs to be corrected before the clash with rival Atletico Madrid, who are impressive in front of goal.

Manchester United host Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford

By Jesse Otoo

Manchester United host Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester United players

Both clubs are heavyweights in the league and in Europe. Meetings between these two giants have produced some humiliating outcome over the years. Manchester United has won two out of their previous five meetings, with two of the matches ending in a draw and one lost.

Erik Ten Hag, the head coach of Manchester United has been the center for criticism for a while now, as his side has failed to produce the expected results fans are seeking.

Joshua Zirkzee, Mattijs De Ligt and Mazraoui have all shown and have impact on the team since their arrival. Untiedhasn’t been impressive this season and if care is not taken, a place in the top four will be a problem, although we are in the early stages of the season.

The Red Devils have played five matches in the league so far, having won two, drawn one and lost two.

Tottenham Hotspuron the other hand haven’t had the best start to the season, compared to that of previous seasons. They drew their open match against Leicester City and have managed to secure two wins in the last four matches, having losing two.

Ange Postecoglou and his guys are looking forward to follow up their win last weekend against Brentford with a win.

Manchester United have created many chances this season than most of the teams in the top five leagues this season but have failed to utilize or make use of the chances created. They’ve scored five and conceded five, so it’s clear they lack defensive awareness and need to solve that as their opponents are good in front of goal, having scored nine goals in their last the league this season.

Bayern Munich welcome high-flying Leverkusen

By Jesse Otoo

Bayern Munich host defending champions Bayer 04 Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena on Saturday afternoon. Leverkusen dominated Bayern Munich last season and is looking forward to do same this season. But a lot has changed about this Bayern side and it is going to be a spectacular game of football.

Harry Kane, Bayern Munich

Bayern have shown some great promise since the start of the season. Having won all of their matches so far and also been the team with the most goals this season. Vincent Kompany’s side thrashed Werder Bremen last weekend with a 5-0 score line. Michael Olise, Harry Kane and Musiala have started the season well.

Bayern weren’t impressive last season and so with the signings made so far and the appointment of a new head coach, has given the team some kind of winning mentality.

Placing third last season wasn’t a good end to the season they anticipated and so they are looking forward to get a point from this match.

Leverkusen became a household name after making history last season winning the league. They went unbeaten in 34 matches and that was so far their best performance since the club was established. Although Xabi Alonso and his squad made a slow start to the season after their unbeaten streak was ended by RB Leipzig, they look set to take on their opponents.

Bayern Munich is the favorite to win this match but don’t underestimate this Leverkusen side.

Alan Kyerematen petitions EC over Voters Register

0
Mr Alan Kyerematen

THE CHAIRPERSON
ELECTORAL COMMISSION OF GHANA
HEADQUARTERS, ACCRA.
Dear Electoral Commissioner.
I write for and on behalf of Hon. Alan Kyerematen, Independent Presidential Candidate, Founder and Leader of the Movement for Change (MC) and Alliance for Revolutionary Change (ARC).
The MAC and the ARC have noted with deep concern, reports of compromised data in respect of the current Voters Register that the Electoral Commission (EC) is preparing for the 2024 General Elections.
The EC has accepted the authenticity of reports of poor data control, and has indicated that they are currently conducting an internal exercise to rectify the anomalies under reference. In spite of the Commission’s efforts, the manner and process of remedial action remains in serious public contention.
Therefore, given that the integrity of the impending Elections primarily rests on the functional quality of the Voters Register, M4C proposes the following measures in support of securing universal acceptability of the Voters Register.
1. The establishment of a high-level Technical Working Group (TWG) chaired by the EC, with representatives of Candidates cleared to contest the General Elections, and the Consultants responsible for the EC data management.
The Technical Working Group would agree on the process and procedures for a full and comprehensive audit of the current Voter Register, based on the following
source documents;
a. The final 2020 Voters Register
b. Limited Registration information since 2021
c. Voter Transfers effected since 2021, and
d. Special Voters Lists since 2020 to date.

3. Each member of the Technical Working Group ought to be provided access to original copies of the listed source documents, and facilitated to determine the veracity of the entries in the said documents.

4. Representatives of Candidates cleared to contest the General Elections, who have written evidence of any compromised data in respect of the current Voter Register, are required to submit same to all members of the Technical Working Group, before the start of the audit process.
5. The final outcome of the collaborative comparative process, would be deemed to be the Final Voters Register for the conduct of the 2024 General Elections.
The proposed process outlined above, mirrors a ‘forensic audit’ being advocated for by a section of the Ghanaian public, and ought to come up with a Voters Register acceptable to all contestants and voters in the upcoming 2024 General Elections. The timeline
proposed for the exercise is from the 30th September, 2024 to the 11th October, 2024. This would enable the EC to release a Final Voters Register by the 14th October, 2024.
M4C and ARC believe that, approaching the resolution of the doubts around the Voters Register in such a joint manner, ensures transparency, of intent that will settle any lingering issues around the Voters Register, and position the country for a free, fair, transparent, and credible General Elections on December 7th, 2024.
We will appreciate your response to the above proposal by Friday, 27 September, 2024.

With Very Best Regards,
Nana Ohene-Ntow,
Director, Elections Planning and Coordination,
Movement for Change (M4C).

Ex-Hearts Goalie, Player Root For Bawumia …Ali Jarah and Bobby Short promise to lead Ex-footballers to mobilise 4million votes for NPP

Ali Jarah, one of Ghana’s former best safest pair of hands and a former goalie of Glorious Accra Hearts of Oak says retired footballers of Ghana will work hard to garner four million votes for Mahamudu Bawumia in the December 7 presidential polls.

The position of the retired footballers, he explained, is based on Dr Bawumia’s welfare packages for the retired footballers, most of whom are living in abject poverty after their service to the nation.

A section of the retirees enjoying jama, an enthusiastic moments of highly-spirited music and dance ahead of a game

“Retired footballers here and at home will go from house-to-house to campaign for Dr Bawumia as we convince our relations and loved ones to see the need to trust Dr Bawumia with their votes. He has the best sports policy for us, retired footballers,” Ali Jarah said, when he took his turn to address a gathering of retired footballers and NPP supporters at Tema New Town, where Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, the Greater Accra Regional (GAR) Minister, launched a welfare group for retired footballers.

He said under a Dr Bawumia government, footballers would be insured with SSNIT, while retired footballers would be paid a monthly stipend for their upkeep.

“Ghanaian footballers must not continue to live as paupers after their years of dedicated service to Ghana and this is what Dr Bawumia is coming to do to save us,” Ali Jarah said.

The Retired Footballers’ Welfare Group is the initiative of Mohammed Elias, also a retired footballer and CEO of One God Forever Limited.

Speaking at the launch, he paid tribute to Titus Glover, who is also a former footballer, for welcoming the idea and mentioning it to Dr Bawumia, who lauded the vision with a promise of supporting it.

“Titus Glover is yet to disappoint me since I introduced this welfare group to him. The financial support I have been receiving from him to a good number of the retired footballers who often call on me for some help is enormous.

“And when he mentioned my vision to Dr Bawumia, he did not hesitate to buy into it. Given the support the old footballers are receiving from Dr Bawumia and Titus Glover, that is why Ali Jarah said we, the retired footballers are going to work very hard to make Dr Bawumia become the president,” Mohammed Elias, whose sobriquet is Maestro, told the gathering.

With Dr Bawumia’s endorsement, Maestro said the retirees’ welfare would become a regional project to champion the good cause of Dr Bawumia.

Taking his turn to address the crowd, Joseph Tagoe, aka Bobby Short, formerly with Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics, lauded the project and said it would help the retired footballers, most of who live in abject poverty.

He said, “Depression is killing most retired footballers because of hardship. Most of the ex-footballers buy oversized dresses to keep them going. So, the Retired Footballers Welfare Group is welcome news.”

Titus Glover, the Guest of Honour, supported the project with seed money of GH¢50,000 after he had lauded the vision of Mohammed Elias.

Mr Glover said Dr Bawumia has outlined his policies for retired footballers and one of them is the project Maestro has started “and the project will be replicate in all the 16 regions. The days when footballers retire as paupers will be history under the government of Dr Bawumia.”

To climax the day, retired footballers from Accra played a football match with their Tema colleagues at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex, and after an interesting ninety minutes, the host team humbled the Accra team 4:1.

EC equipped to conduct free & fair election …Prez tells UN

0
President Akufo-Addo speaking at the UN General Assembly

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has assured the United Nations General Assembly that Ghana will have an election that is free and fair, come December 7, 2024.

According to him, the referee, the Electoral Commission, is well equipped and in a good position to conduct free and fair elections to elect a new president and legislators.

President Akufo-Addo said this on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 during his final address to the UN at the 79th General Assembly, currently ongoing in New York, United States of America.

“As my presidency draws to a close, I want to assure this Assembly that the upcoming 2024 elections in Ghana will be free, fair and transparent.

“The Electoral Commission, supported by Ghana’s security services, is well equipped to ensure that the will of the Ghanaian people is respected,” President Akufo-Addo said.

The assurance by the President, which is not the first, comes at a time when the main opposition party and the EC are at each other’s throats over the credibility of the voter register.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which appeared frustrated about the integrity of the voter register, was compelled to hit the streets across the nation, to register their displeasure and the posture of the EC to address their concerns, particularly permitting a forensic audit of the register.

TENSIONS

Ghana heads to a crucial election at a time when the West African sub-region, in particular, is on fire from political tensions, with nearby countries taken over by military juntas.

President Akufo-Addo indicated that these coups are stark reminders that democracy is indeed fragile and must be continually nurtured.

Ghana has enjoyed stable democracy having transitioned to a multi-party system in 1992, during which eight successive elections have been held, with power changing hands between political parties on multiple occasions.

This achievement, President Akufo-Addo said, Ghanaians would protect and safeguard as the nation prefers a democratic path than the alternative.

“Ghana has long been a beacon of democracy in Africa and we intend to keep it that way. Ghanaians have demonstrated time and time again, in the last three decades, their strong attachment to democracy, which they will not permit to be undermined,” he remarked.

He continued that, “The people of Ghana, from every corner of the country, have made their voices clear: they will not tolerate any attempts to disrupt the democratic process.”

PROOF

President Akufo-Addo, who has contested presidential elections for four consecutive times since 2008, challenged one in court, and one of his two victories was also contested, was confident Ghana will come out of the December elections stronger.

He said that the 2024 elections will be proof of Ghana’s enduring adherence to the rule of law, transparency, and the principles of democratic accountability that have guided the nation in recent decades.

SUPPORT

President Akufo-Addo further urged the international community to continue supporting efforts to promote peace, democracy and development across Africa.

He stressed that the fight for peace goes beyond government action, adding that it is a fight for humanity.

FREE SHS

On another subject, President Akufo-Addo informed the 79th UN General Assembly of the impact of his flagship programme, the free Senior High School.

According to him, the policy has benefitted 5.7 million young people in the country, many of whom would have otherwise been denied the opportunity to receive a quality education.

“Our flagship free SHS policy has benefitted 5.7 million young people, many of whom would have been denied the opportunity to learn, dream, and to succeed.

“This initiative has transformed the lives of millions, positioning the next generation of Ghanaians to take their place as leaders in the global economy.”

TDC ready to construct more houses

0
Tema Development Corporation

The Tema Development Corporation (TDC) says they are ready to start the construction of 832 affordable housing units under Phase 4 of its housing development project. The company made the disclosure when its officials met with the sector Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah in Accra last week Friday.

The visit followed the corporation’s recent triumph at the State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Awards organised by the State Interest and Governance Authority (SIGA), where it was recognized for its efficiency, leadership, and profitability.

The TDC’s new project marks an important milestone in the government’s ongoing effort to address the country’s housing deficit, which stands at over 1.8 million units.

The corporation has already completed Phases 1 to 3 of its housing project, delivering a total of 1,072 units to the market.

These units have provided affordable housing options for both public and private sector workers, significantly contributing to the availability of decent housing in the country.

During the meeting, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah praised the leadership of TDC for its consistent performance and for being a key player in the affordable housing space.

He commended the corporation for winning awards for efficiency, leadership, and profitability at the SOE Awards, saying these recognitions reflect the quality of leadership and the corporation’s commitment to its mandate.

“Your recent recognition at the SOE Awards is a clear indication that TDC is on the right path. You’ve demonstrated that state-owned enterprises can be profitable, efficient and lead in terms of delivery.

“The government is proud of your accomplishments and we are confident that the 832 units under Phase 4 will be another success,” the Minister remarked.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah emphasized that government’s focus on housing as a critical sector in Ghana’s development was reflected in TDC’s efforts stressing that the completion of 1,072 housing units under Phases 1 to 3 has provided much-needed relief to families looking for affordable homes, and the government is eager to support further expansion.

“The 832 units in Phase 4 is part of a broader national strategy to address the housing deficit in Ghana. We are committed to ensuring that these homes are built to a high standard and remain affordable for the average Ghanaian. TDC has proven itself capable, and we look forward to seeing this project come to fruition,” Oppong Nkrumah added.

The Managing Director of TDC, Alice Abena Ofori-Atta, expressed gratitude to the Minister for his support and assured him that the corporation is well-prepared to begin work on Phase 4. She explained that Phases 1 to 3, which delivered 1,072 units, had set the foundation for even greater achievements in the affordable housing space. With the planned 832 units in Phase 4, TDC is poised to further expand its housing offerings in Tema.

“We have already completed Phases 1 to 3, delivering 1,072 quality housing units to the market. Our new Phase 4 will add 832 more units, which we expect to meet the high demand for affordable homes in the country. We remain committed to ensuring that the houses we build are not only affordable but also meet the highest standards of quality,” Boon stated.

The Managing Director highlighted that the 832 units under Phase 4 would be built with modern construction technology, ensuring durability and sustainability adding that the project would be completed within the set timeline and would be available to both public and private sector workers, with flexible payment and mortgage plans to enhance accessibility.

This Minister Oppong Nkrumah reiterated government’s commitment to supporting housing development initiatives across the country. He noted that housing remains a key priority for President Akufo-Addo’s administration and that the government would continue to invest in projects aimed at reducing the housing deficit.

“The government recognizes housing as a critical area for national development. We are working to ensure that all Ghanaians have access to affordable and decent housing. TDC’s work in this space is vital, and we are committed to providing the necessary support to ensure that this project, along with others across the country, is completed successfully,” the Minister said.

He also hinted at future collaborations with other stakeholders to develop additional housing projects in various districts across the country, with the goal of decentralising affordable housing solutions and bringing them closer to communities that need them most.

Veep to launch a ground-breaking Digital Solution for Local Taxi Drivers

0
Veep Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will soon launch in Accra, a ground-breaking digital solution -The GoRide App a homegrown ride-hailing platform aimed at transforming Ghana’s transportation industry and pointedly improve upon the livelihoods of local taxi drivers, especially members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).

The GoRide is part of Government’s bold vision to leverage digitalization in addressing the economic challenges faced by Ghana’s transport sector.

Unlike existing ride-hailing services, which charge higher commissions, GoRide in troduces a driver-friendly commission of just 10%. This significantly lower rate is designed to increase the earnings of local drivers, enhance their financial security and ensure the sustainability of their operations.

In addition, 1% of drivers’ earnings will be contributed towards pensions, providing long-term financial stability for drivers and securing their futures.

The GPRTU initially approached the government with a pressing issue: local taxi drivers, a critical part of Ghana’s transport system, were losing business and market share to existing Apps. These platforms charged drivers exorbitant commissions, which substantially reduced their earnings, making it harder for them to sustain their livelihoods.

Local drivers using these existing platforms also voiced concerns that despite working long hours and high commissions were eating into their income.

In response, Dr. Bawumia intervened, leveraging the private sector to develop GoRide. The app was designed with the interests of both local drivers and passengers in mind. It not only helps local taxi drivers compete effectively but also reduces the commission fee to just 10%, far lower than the rates charged by existing apps.

Additionally, the 1% pension contribution will ensure drivers are not only earning more but also planning for their financial future.

“The launch of GoRide is a testament to Dr. Bawumia’s belief that ‘it is possible’to develop local solutions for local problems,” said a government spokesperson.

“By working closely with GPRTU drivers and other stakeholders, we have designed a system that not only improves their earnings but also contributes to the growth of our digital economy.”

Beyond improving driver income, the GoRideapp brings broader socio-economic benefits. The Ministry of Transport, in collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has endorsed the platform for its potential to enhance road safety by enabling real-time monitoring of driver behavior and vehicle performance.

Furthermore, the app is expected to modernise the transportation sector, keeping profits within the country and creating sustainable jobs for local drivers, contributing to Ghana’s overall economic development.

Following extensive consultations with drivers and unions like the GPRTU, the 10% commission structurewas agreed upon to positively impact drivers’ financial well-being.

GoRide is not just a ride-hailing app, it is an economic empowerment tool ensuring local drivers earn more while contributing towards their pension plans, offering long-term financial security.

The launch of GoRidemarks a significant milestone as it showcases the government’s commitment to embracing digitalization as a driver of economic transformation.

With this initiative, the government aims to place local drivers at the forefront of Ghana’s growing digital economy, while offering commuters a safe, reliable, and affordable mode of transportation.

Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, Paramount Chief of Abene Kwahu

The Chiefs and people of the 36 states of Anlo have invited Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, Paramount Chief of Abene Kwahu as Chairman, at their annual traditional festival, Hogbetsotsoza, happening in November.

The invitation was officially extended to the Kwahuhene last week, during a visit of a delegation of chiefs from the Anlo Dukor led by Togbi Amey Zegu II of Alakple, with Mr Ken Kpedor and Mr GodswayHanyabui, President and Vice President (Operations) respectively of Anlo Youth Council, the umbrella body of the youth of Anlo.

This invitation to the Kwahuhene meant an invitation to the entire Kwahu kingdom to celebrate the famous festival, also known as Hogbeza, which commemorates the legendary exodus of the Ewe-Dogbo folks from Notsie in present-day Togo, with the Anlos.

Mr Kpedor, in an interview with Ghana News Agency, said Daasebre Agyapong as Chairman would help bring the two kingdoms together as part of the bigger objective of using the Hogbeza platform to foster unity, peace, and national cohesion.

Mr Kpedor called on Anlo citizens, home and abroad, especially the youth, to get involved in the 2024 celebration particularly because its organisation was being led for the first time, by the Anlo Youth Council, urging them to regard Hogbeza as more than just a festival.

“Hogbetsotsoza is not just a festival; it is a call to action. It is a reminder that our destiny lies in our hands.

“By actively participating in the festival, we ensure that it continues to benefit us and generations to come. Let’s get involved, celebrate our heritage and build a brighter future together.”

Celebrated every first Saturday in November, at Anloga, the traditional and ritual capital of the Anlo Dukor, Hogbetsotsoza attracts chiefs and people across Eweland, other parts of the country and from the Diaspora to witness the display of rich tradition and culture of the Anlo people.

This year’s celebration is being held under the theme, “Strengthening Bonds and Embracing Our Shared Heritage.”
