Gyetiase, Tadieso communities protest against deplorable roads

Prince Dwomoh addressing the media

Gyetiase and Tadieso communities in the Sekyere Central District of Ashanti region have registered their displeasure about the deplorable state of their roads, in a demonstration last Tuesday.

Protesting under a “No Road, No Vote” mantra, the demonstrators expressed their concerns in a petition to the District Chief Executive, Mr. Prince Dwomoh.

Hon. Kingsley Kodua Benjamin receiving the petition

Prince Dwomoh, on behalf of the protesters disclosed that their roads have been unmotorable, unconstructed and untarred since independence, and they have suffered enough and cannot wait any longer.

He noted that the communities, which are located in the Ashanti region, are not in the hinterlands and that the Contractor (Win-Man Ghana Limited) left the site two years ago.

According to him, the Contractor resurfaced briefly on site because the Minister of Roads was touring the area only to disappear at the end of the Minister’s tour.

Mr. Dwomoh lamented that Teachers and Nurses among others refuse to accept postings to the area because of the poor road network, as well as causing loss of lives and miscarriages for pregnant women.

He disclosed that it is an eyesore when it rains.

According to him, Gyetiase has one of the best Eye Centres built by a Non-Governmental Organisation, through the instrumentality of one Maa Martha, a Pastor, but other towns cannot benefit from it because of their roads.

Residents demonstrating through the streets

Mr. Dwomoh further explained that the demonstration is to draw the attention of authorities to the bad road network of less than ten kilometers and threatened that if the roads are not constructed before the December 7 elections, the affected communities would boycott the elections and prevent officials of the District Assembly from collecting tolls and levies for Internally Generated Fund after the elections.

Tuesday’s demonstration comes as a result of the failure by the Member of Parliament, Adelaide Ntim, who doubles as the Deputy Health Minister to deal with the situation.

The MP promised to mount pressure on the Road Minister to ensure that the road sees the needed rehabilitation, but nothing has been done since.

Receiving the petition, Kingsley Kodua Benjamin, the District Chief Executive, said he was well aware of the deplorable state of the roads and very disturbed about it.

He noted that efforts have been made to ensure the construction of the roads, but no positive results yet.

The DCE promised that he would do everything in his capacity as the DCE to ensure that the road is constructed and assured that Gyetiase and Tadieso communities  that they would be the first in the district to benefit from the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) initiative, launched by the President recently.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, disclosed this while addressing a press conference at the State House in Abuja.

He however said he does not know when the reshuffling would take place, stressing that it could happen before October 1st.

He said, “The President has expressed his desire to reshuffle his cabinet and he will do it. I don’t know whether he wants to do it before October first and he will surely do it. That is what I will say, but he has not given us any timeline.”

Speaking of the performance of the present administration, Onanuga said Tinubu had during the last Federal Executive Council meeting urged all ministers “to go out there and speak about the activities of his administration”.

Onanuga further stated that some of the ministers have been “media shy, television shy, radio shy, and he wants them to overcome all that and go out there and speak about what they have been doing”.

“Because the feeling out there is that the government is not doing enough and the government has been doing a lot. And it is up to them to go out there and blow their own trumpet.

“They should go out there and talk about what their ministries have been doing.”

ASUU threatens fresh strike, issues 14-day ultimatum to govt

ASUU threatens strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has issued a 14-day strike warning ultimatum to the Federal Government to resolve some lingering issues dating as far back as 2009.

ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke in a statement issued on Wednesday, said the body is seeking the conclusion of the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement based on the Nimi Briggs Committee’s Draft Agreement of 2021.

It also demanded the release of withheld salaries due to the 2022 strike action, and expressed frustration with the government’s lack of commitment and delay tactics.

It stated that these actions were generating a crisis in the public university system.

“In view of the foregoing, ASUU resolves to give the Nigerian Government another 14 days, in addition to the earlier 21 days, beginning from Monday, September 23, 2024, during which all the lingering issues must have been concretely addressed to the satisfaction of the membership of the union.

“The union should not be held responsible for any industrial disharmony that arises from the government’s failure to seize the new opportunity offered by ASUU to nip the looming crisis in the bud,” ASUU said

ASUU is also demanding the release of unpaid salaries for staff on sabbatical, part-time, and adjunct appointments affected by the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, and the payment of outstanding third-party deductions such as check-off dues and cooperative contributions.

It added that it wants funding for the revitalisation of public universities, partly captured in the 2023 Federal Government Budget, and the payment of Earned Academic Allowances partly captured in the 2023 Federal Government Budget.

Other issues include the proliferation of universities by Federal and State Governments, the implementation of the reports of visitation panels to universities, the reversal of the illegal dissolution of Governing Councils, and the adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution as a replacement for IPPIS.

Senate confirms appointment of Justice Kekere-Ekun as new Chief Justice

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun

The Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria after screening. The development comes after President Bola Tinubu wrote the Senate on Tuesday, seeking her confirmation as the CJN.

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, read Tinubu’s letter during plenary on Tuesday.

In the letter, Tinubu cited Section 231(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, which empowers him to appoint the CJN based on recommendations from the National Judicial Council, pending Senate approval.

The President expressed confidence in her nomination and urged the Senate to act urgently.

“I hereby forward the nomination of Honourable Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, CON, for confirmation as the Chief Justice of Nigeria. I trust that this request will receive the Senate’s prompt consideration and approval,” Tinubu stated in his message to the lawmakers.

Senate President Akpabio then referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for deliberation on the next legislative sitting.

The National Judicial Council (NJC) in August recommended Justice Kekere-Ekun to President Tinubu as successor to the former CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

The 66-year-old jurist has been serving as the Acting CJN since Justice Ariwoola retired last month.

Kekere-Ekun is the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria and second Nigeria female jurist to serve in that position.

The first female to occupy the exalted seat was Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, who was the CJN between July 2012 and November 2014.

Kekere-Ekun was born on May 7, 1958, in London, United Kingdom. Her journey in the legal profession commenced at the University of Lagos where she obtained her first degree in law in 1980.

After she completed the Nigeria Law School, she was called to the Nigerian Bar on July 10, 1981.

Twifo Atti Morkwa Omanhene sued for GH¢15m

Sued

Oseadeaye Kwasi Kanin V, Omanhene of Twi Atti Morkwa Traditional area, in the Central region, has been dragged before a Kumasi High Court for engaging in illegal mining on a legally acquired concession of a Concessioneer.

Also in the dock were Okyeame Yaw Asamoah, Ernest Ahirlu and Wu Ming Ji.

The plaintiff, Bright Kwabena Obeng, is seeking to recover GHc15 million jointly and severally against defendants for the quantity of gold so far mined from his concession, based on geological intelligence and physical inspection of  the gold mined in the said concession.

A writ of summons filed on September 5, 2024 on behalf of the plaintiff by Hanson Kwadwo KoduahEsq. to this effect, is also seeking general damages of GHc20 million against the defendants.

The plaintiff has also applied for a declaration of the court, seeking an interlocutory injunction to restrain the defendants, their agents, labourers and workers from interfering with the plaintiff’s 14.73 acre concession, acquired by his Kadesh Mining Enterprise and duly licensed by the Minerals Commission.

The plaintiff claims the defendants have illegally and unlawfully trespassed on his concession and mined without authority about 85% of the entire 14.73 acres causing commercial disadvantage and economic loss to him.

The conduct of the defendants, he says, also constitute an infraction and illegality under the Minerals and Mining Act 703 as amended by the Minerals and Mining Act 900, among others, legal provisions.

Meanwhile, Philip M. Young Esq. of Amponsa-Dadzie and Partners, a law firm in Cape Coast on Monday September 23, 2024, filed a motion on notice to raise an objection to the venue and thus seeking an order for transfer of the suit to an appropriate forum in Cape Coast.

In an affidavit in support of the objection, the first defendant deposed that the disputed land lies in a Mining concession at Twifo Atti Morkwa and that the nearest High Court (Commmercial division) to the disputed land is the High Court of Cape Coast in the Central region and therefore the appropriate venue to hear and determine the suit.

Oseadeaye Kwasi Kanin also argued that the plaintiff ought to have commenced the action at a High Court in Cape Coast which has jurisdiction over the area in which the land lies and not in a Kumasi High Court.

The plaintiff has, in response, filed an affidavit in opposition to the defendants’ objection to venue for the determination contending that the Kumasi Court has jurisdiction geographically to hear the matter on full scale trial basis describing the defendants’ objection as materially incompetent, misconceived and unsustainable both in substantive and procedural jurisdictions of the court.

Counsel for the plaintiff has, therefore, prayed the court to dismiss defendants’ application for objection.

Lawyer Koduah argued that the Omanhene had no right to enter our concession in the first place despite the fact that he is the Omanhene of that traditional area.

He said the concession had legally been granted to the plaintiff by the Minerals Commision under the laws of the land and has the right to enter and mine and not the Omanhene. That is the law and must it be respected to champion the fight and national effort against galamsey.

The matter had been adjourned to the October 14, 2024 by which time all the parties and counsel would have filed the necessary documents that they would want the court to rely on and determine the matter.

In a major initiative to combat the growing issue of plastic waste, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (G.P.R.T.U.) has partnered with CorpNation Foundation to launch the 4R+ Project. The project will target ten major lorry stations in Takoradi, including the Accra, STC, Cape Coast, and Tarkwa stations. This initiative follows CorpNation’s successful waste management programs across the Western Region, which have already recovered over 9 tonnes of plastic waste, resulting in significant environmental benefits, such as a reduction of 26 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

The project launch, held on September 19th at the Tarkwa station in Takoradi, was chaired by Dr. Emmanuel Atta from Takoradi Technical University.

He emphasised the project’s goal to curb indiscriminate waste disposal at lorry stations, in commercial vehicles, and along travel routes, with a particular focus on plastic waste.

CorpNation’s Programmes Director, Mr. Anthony Botwe, outlined the scope of the project, which aims to cover 100 long buses, 1,000 mini buses and taxis, and over 50 towns and cities, including Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, and even Abidjan. He highlighted the severe environmental and health impacts of plastic waste, including its contribution to flooding, climate change, and harm to human health and aquatic life.

Representatives from each of the ten stations were presented with bins and sacks to facilitate waste segregation and collection, along with banners and stickers to raise awareness among drivers and passengers about the importance of tackling plastic waste.

The project also received support from local authorities and environmental agencies, including the EPA and the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly.

GPRTU Chairman, Mr. Solomon Brenin called on stakeholders for continued support, while CorpNation’s Executive Director, Mrs. Dorothy Okwaisie Adzika, was commended for her leadership in promoting environmental sustainability.

‘I’m left with only 3 toes on my right foot’ –Sonnie Badu

Sonnie Badu

Gospel musician and Pastor, Sonnie Badu has opened up on the injuries he sustained after a domestic accident in December 2023.

In an interview on Onua TV, Sonnie Badu disclosed that he has currently lost two of his toes on the right foot as a result of the accident last year.

“I went through depression for six months, I’m left with only three toes,” he said.

“On that day I was cleaning up and I slipped on the staircase, my rail is a metal. I was supposed to hit my head on the ground but I went on the floor with my shoulder to protect myself. So, I landed on my shoulder and my leg went through the metal sharp rail and my toes were slitted.

“I was bleeding everywhere. We drove to the hospital and I walked to the emergency. When the doctors checked, they asked where are my toes and I asked which toes before I realise my toes had been slitted. So, I asked my team members to go check with a torchlight and they saw the toes on the floor, picked it up and placed in an iced box and brought it to the hospital. The doctors checked and refused it,” he narrated.

The singer underwent a surgery after he stumbled on the steps between the garden and the metal railings in his home while cleaning and watering in December last year.

Despite his condition, Sonnie Badu, who hadn’t fully recovered, was later seen performing at his Rhythms of Africa concert in Accra on December 9, 2023.

This caused people to claim on social media that his injury was not severe and only staged to gain attention for his Rhythms of Africa concert.
