Biden ‘deeply concerned’ about leak of Israel plan to attack Iran

Israel was targeted by Iranian missiles on 1 October

President Joe Biden is “deeply concerned” about a leak of classified documents that contain the US’s assessment of Israeli plans to attack Iran, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said.

Officials have not determined whether the documents were released due to a hack or a leak, Mr Kirby said.

House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed the publication of the documents over the weekend. They are said to contain the movements of Israeli military assets in preparation for a response to Iran’s 1 October missile attack.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman said the country was prepared to counter any Israeli attack.

The documents, marked top secret, were shareable within the Five Eyes intelligence alliance of the US, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, CBS, the BBC’s US partner, reported.

There is no “indication” that additional documents will “[find] their way into the public domain”, Mr Kirby said on Monday.

He added that President Biden “will be actively monitoring” the investigation to uncover how the documents were released, and he intends to hear measures that will be taken “to prevent it happening again”.

For weeks Israel has been deciding how and when to respond to Iran’s latest missile attack. Israel’s defence minister has warned it will be “deadly, precise and surprising”.

The two documents reportedly appear to be attributed to the US National Geospatial Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency (NSA), and were published on an Iranian-aligned Telegram account on Friday.

Johnson, the highest-ranking member of Congress, told CNN on Sunday that “the leak is very concerning.”

China confirms pact with India to ‘resolve’ conflict over disputed border

0
China and India leaders

China has confirmed reaching a deal with India over their disputed border in the Himalayan region, a day after New Delhi said it had struck an agreement with Beijing for military patrols along the frontier.

But the announcement on Tuesday did not explain whether the pact covered the length of the border or just points where the two sides have been involved in a standoff since 2020.

Relations between the world’s two most populous, nuclear-armed neighbours have been strained since clashes between their troops on the largely undemarcated frontier in the western Himalayas’ Ladakh region four years ago killed 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers.

Since the skirmish in 2020, both sides pulled back tens of thousands of soldiers and agreed not to send patrols into a narrow strip surrounding the Line of Actual Control, which is an unofficial division about 3,488km (2,167 miles) long in the Himalayas, with China claiming a considerably shorter section.

It separates Chinese and Indian-held territories from Ladakh in the west to India’s eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, which China claims in its entirety considering it part of its Tibet region.

In 1962, Chinese troops crossed the frontier with India during a dispute over the border’s demarcation, sparking a four-week-long war. China retained Aksai Chin, a strategic corridor linking Tibet to western China.

“Recently, China and India have maintained close communication through diplomatic and military channels on issues relating to the China-India border,” China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Lin Jian told a news briefing in Beijing on Tuesday.

“At present, the two sides have reached a solution to the relevant issues, which China views positively,” Lin said.

Today’s UEFA Champions League Fixtures & Previews

Robert Lewandoski, Barcelona

5-time winners Barca host 6-time champions Bayern

In one of the standout games on matchday three of the Champions League, five-time winners Barcelona will host six-time champions Bayern Munich. With both teams on three points after two games, another defeat here could put either side in danger of dropping out of the top 24.

With 10 wins over Barca in the Champions League, Bayern could equal the record for the most wins any team has managed against a single opponent in the competition, and become the first team to win seven straight games against a team, since Real Madrid did so against Ajax throughout the 2010s.

Vincent Kompany will be hoping his side can respond after a disappointing defeat away to Aston Villa on matchday two.

That result ended Bayern’s 41-game unbeaten run in this stage of the Champions League, and it also means they could lose three straight away games in Europe for the first time in their history.

Barca were able to welcome Dani Olmo and Gavi back to the matchday squad after injury at the weekend, with the latter getting a brief cameo in the final few minutes.

Frenkie de Jong is also closing in on a full return, as he is yet to start since returning at the beginning of the month.

The hosts will also be without Ferran Torres due to a hamstring problem, and centre-back pairing Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen, so teenager Pau Cubarsi is set to start in another high-profile encounter.

Bayern will be without Aleksandar Pavlovic after he broke his collarbone inside the opening five minutes at the weekend, with Joao Palhinha the likely candidate to come into the side.

Young talent Jamal Musiala will be the big injury absentee for the visitors if he is unable to get over a hip issue in time.

ManCity take on Sparta Prague at the Etihad Stadium

The English champions take on the best in Czechia in Wednesday’s Champions League clash as Manchester City play host to Sparta Prague at the Etihad Stadium.

These two teams, who have never previously faced each other in European competition, have accumulated four points from their opening two matches, with the Citizens occupying eighth spot in the UCL table and the Maroons sitting just two places further back in 10th.

Manchester City players

Man City have extended their unbeaten run across all competitions in the 2024-25 campaign to 12 matches and are the only Premier League team who are yet to lose this season after beating Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola‘s side has seen them create a new club landmark of going 31 matches unbeaten (W25 D6) in the Premier League, and they will get the chance to etch their name into Champions League folklore in Wednesday’s favourable-looking fixture against Sparta Prague.

Indeed, if Man City merely avoid defeat against the Maroons, they will set a new record for the longest unbeaten run in European Cup/Champions League history. The Citizens currently boast a 25-match unbeaten run (W17 D8), scoring 64 goals and conceding just 18 in the process.

Guardiola may consider rotating his side in other positions, as he did against Slovan Bratislava, with the likes of Stefan OrtegaManuel AkanjiMatheus NunesJames McAteeJack Grealish and Phil Foden all hoping they can force their way into the first XI.

Leipzig, Liverpool lock horns at the Red Bull Arena

RB Leipzig and Liverpool lock horns in Wednesday’s Champions League league phase encounter at the Red Bull Arena. The Reds have already eased to victory over Bologna and AC Milan in this year’s new-look competition, but their Bundesliga hosts are yet to pick up a point.

Arne Slot‘s Liverpool revolution is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon, as the Reds passed one of the stiffest tests of their Premier League title credentials  when the Dutchman won the battle of the newly-baptised Premier League bosses with Enzo Maresca.

Arne Slot, Liverpool

Two of those successes have come against Italian opposition in Europe, as Liverpool followed up their 3-1 beating of AC Milan with a 2-0 triumph over Bologna on matchday two, even if they did ride their luck at times and were fortunate that the Rossoblu had left their shooting boots behind.

Sterner examinations are to come – Sunday’s trip to title rivals Arsenal has all the makings of a blockbuster battle – but the Merseyside powerhouses, who sit fifth in the 36-team UCL table, are currently riding cloud nine as they chase an eighth successive victory in all competitions.

What is more, the Reds have won all five of their away games under Slot thus far.

Liverpool’s triumph over Chelsea came at a bit of a cost, as Diogo Jota lasted just half an hour before succumbing to the effects of a Tosin Adarabioyo challenge, and Slot would be surprised to see the Portugal international make the cut on Wednesday.

Unbeaten Inter Milan visit pointless Young Boys

Unbeaten Inter Milan will visit pointless Young Boys on Wednesday evening, as both teams resume their Champions League campaign.

Heading into the clubs’ meeting at Stadion Wankdorf, three-time European champions Inter have picked up four points without conceding a goal, while their hosts have endured a nightmare start to the new league phase.

Lautaro Martinez, Inter Milan

Following a commendable opening-day draw at Manchester City midway through last month, Inter secured their first Champions League win of the season by beating Red Star Belgrade 4-0 at San Siro a fortnight later.

Keeping faith with much of the squad that reached the 2023 final, coach Simone Inzaghi is banking on experience to navigate a way through to the knockout rounds, as his starting XIs so far have made Inter the only club with an average age above 30.

All told, Inter have lost just once in ten matches this season, and they head for Bern on the back of beating Roma in a close-fought contest on Sunday.

However, the Scudetto holders are without a win from their last three Champions League road trips, so Inzaghi will demand an end to that drought at Stadion Wankdorf.

Feature: The Catholics Holy Walk Against Environmental Degradation

0
Feature

“Galamsey cuts across party lines. Those in the pits looking for gold are NPP, NDC, GCPP, Movement for Change, CPP, etc. etc. Let each flag bearer call his/her followers to lay down their tools.” – Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, CSSP.

On Friday, October 11, 2024, Catholics in the Accra Archdiocese embarked on a 6.10 km prayer walk from the Holy Spirit Cathedral through to the Ghana National Fire Service, Head Quarters to the Christ the King Catholic Church.

This walk, which was against galamsey, was joined by people of other religions and some members of all political parties in Ghana, including the ruling NPP.

In a season of demonstrations and picketing, the Catholics displayed some orderliness unseen in Ghana, with a walk so peaceful without any form of lawlessness or shouting and singing of wars songs. Rather they prayed to God through Mary in the form that Jesus taught us in Luke 18: 9-14.

They were sodiscipline that the Police who were there in their huge numbers to ensure there was law and order was maintained, had nothing at all to do, but onlyto walk along with some partaking in the Rosary prayers.

The Catholics, very much aware of the harm galamsey was causing this country and the fact that its end never seems to be in sight, resorted to the only way that can break any form of evil, as exactly happened in the fall of the walls of Jericho (Joshua 6: 1-27).

In this case, the Catholics chose the powerful weapon, the Rosary.

When St. Gabriel the Archangel went to Mary to announce to her that she was chosen to be the Mother of God, beginning with the words, “Hail, Full of Grace…,” in Greek “Kecharitomene,” Heaven and hell stood still, waiting for her response. The former with great hope that she would say Yes, so that hell’s grip on man would be broken and the latter, in great fear that a Yes response would break, its strangle hold on man.

Mary said “Yes” and Heaven was full of joy and celebration while all hell broke loose in hell. Mary’s “Yes” found in the words of the Hail Mary prayer, always makes hell flee from the one devoutly praying.

Mary who knows that the best way to reconcile us, sinners, with God, willalways intercede for us at the feet of her Son (John 2:3). And after that she willdirectus to Jesus, telling us to do whatever He tells us (John 2:5).

The power in the Rosary prayer, has performed many miracles, with one occurringon Wednesday October 7, 1571 which made October, the month of the Holy Rosary. A small, ill-equipped and weak Christian naval force, miraculously defeated a much larger, well-equipped and very powerful navy of the invading Muslim Ottoman military at the Battle of Lepanto.

With war looming, and all the Christian nations in Europe panicking with fear, Pope Pius V, rallied everyone around to pray the Rosary daily, including on the day of battle. Victory was so swift forthe Christians as they prayed the Hail Mary…

After the numerous calls upon governments, since the nineties, to take steps to halt the devastation of the environment, including galamsey, fell on deaf ears, the Catholic Church decided to seek solution from God through Mary in the Rosary prayer. Without any show of violence or acts of lawlessness, the Catholics embarked on this peaceful prayer walk, to show that in most cases, prayer is the answer.

Unfortunately, some people, including Catholics condemned this. On my Facebook page, while everyone was commending the Catholics, a blogger, the Guards’ Guide, decided to go ballistic. Under a title: Letter to Jesus Christ: The Disgrace of Accra Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church (Ye Hypocrites), the author condemned Catholics of this archdiocese for ridiculing Christ and tarnishing the image of Christianity in the galamsey prayer protest, demanding to know where the Church was from 2010 to 2020.

It went on to say galamsey which started in Prestea in 1894, was worsened in 2010 by the NDC’s Baba Jamal when he launched Youth in mining (galamsey). It talked about 2013 to 2016 when galamsey worsened again with the Chinese all over galamsey sites which made President Mahama waged war on that activity only to find out that his ministers were taking bribes from the galamseyers.

It spoke of President Nana Akufo Addo’s failure in his fight against galamsey even though he introduced community mining to replace it. The Guards’ Guide went on to talk about the dead Odor River; the over 30,000 Ghanaians who were killed on the Accra-Kumasi highway; galamseyers who attend Holy Mass and asked where the Roman Catholic Church was when all these were happening.

It did not understand why the Catholics did not protest against the Mills and Mahama government when galamsey was there and why they did not protest in support of Nana Addo’s fight against galamsey.

Then on a Catholic WhatsApp page, a Catholic thought that the prayer walk was fruitless and unproductive because it would have been so, if it was embarked at galamsey sites.

He went on to say that the Catholic Church could have educated its congregations in their environment rather than embarking on the walk. Adding that Catholics should be made to understand the significance of the walk; ending by saying Catholics have not been educated on how to protect the environment and yet they were made to go out to create awareness.

To the Guards’ Guide, the first question is, has it ever publicly created any awareness against environmental degradation? Is it aware that since the 90’s the Catholic Church in Ghana has been drawing governments and the public’s attention to the environment?

If it had done any research,it would have found out that the Catholic Church has always been concern about things that affect the lives of people including environmental devastation, than any other church or institution, by way of praying, drawing attention to the problems and suggesting solutions.

This completely uninformed blogger should not have made any noise in the first place, since it never did what the Catholic Church has been doing. It had no clue about the communiques from the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference (GCBC) and Pope Francis’ encyclical, the Laudato Si.

Surely it was not even aware that in its 2017 communique, the GCBC commended Nana Addo on his fight against galamsey and in 2018, it advised that care must be taking that government’s negotiation with the small-scale miners to return to mining, would not bring back galamsey.

For the Guards’ Guide to ask why the Catholics did not embark on such walks earlier, against the NDC governments, it must tell us why Jesus Christ did not come during the days of Noah and the days of Sodom and Gomorrah to preach repentance during the periods when sin was at its peak? God always knows the right time and the Catholics always act, according to His Word.

After decades with nothing effective been done by governments and the peoples, the Church decided to resort to communal prayer, to ask for God’s intervention. It is rather a great hypocrisy on the part of Guards’ Guide afterhiding away from issues on our environment, to come accusing those who care and always speak out about it. It falls in the class of passive citizens called Konongo Kayaa and also found in the country-broke-country-no-broke-we-dey-inside group. The best it can do is to shut up and observe how things are done.

As for the Catholic opposing the prayer walk, I must say, I am greatly surprised. He attends Holy Mass at least every Sunday and belongs to a prayer group. At the Prayer of the Faithful, during Holy Mass why does he join in praying against the Russian-Ukraine and Israeli-Arab wars, which are not happening in our country?

Does he join his prayer group during prayer intercessions for peace in war-torn countries? Is he even aware that the effects of galamsey is spreading nation-wide to areas where the activities are not taking place, with Ghana Water Company, warning that due to galamsey, soon pipe-borne water will be a privilege?

Was he always dozing off when communiques from the GCBC are read out, every year, during Mass? Does he miss out in purchasing the Catholic Standard to read the communiques and issues like the Laudato Si, published in it? Is he aware that all dioceses are going to embark on prayer walks including those in galamsey areas?

I shudder to think that if such a staunch Catholic who regularly attends Mass, appears to be very ignorant about the Church and its activities, then what about those who attend Church only on Christmas and Easter? Indeed, the Church has a lot of work to do on people like this fellow who always sits in Mass and take nothing in.

This prayer walk was apolitical and the NPP should know it was not against government, but a spiritual interaction between God and His people. And the NDC should stop taking advantage of the situation, parading bottles filled with polluted water, as if it is only in this era that galamsey came. Our waterbodies were in this state during the NDC regime and it did nothing to reverse the situation.

The Catholics have spoken to God through Mary and we will soon be told by Jesus, what should be done.

Blessed be Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar, Amen and Thanks.

When a Perfect Night’s Sleep Becomes Harmful

0
Sleep

When Sydney Stern bought an Apple Watch four years ago, she was excited to try out all the new features, especially the sleep tracker.

A health scientist, the 27-year-old Maryland resident was well aware of the correlation between sleep and disease prevention. But what Stern thought would be a boon to her health became a harm, leading to anxiety and, in the end, less sleep.

“I was focused on getting seven hours of sleep every night because I knew there were diseases associated with fewer hours,” Stern said. “I was constantly checking the tracker, even at 4 in the morning, to see how I was doing.”

After about a month of this, Stern decided to ditch the device.

“I consciously take the watch off at night and even put it in a different room,” she said. “Since giving it up, the only measure I have of sleep is when I put my head down on the pillow and how I feel when I wake up.”

Stern’s experience highlights a growing concern over the past several years as wearable sleep trackers have gained popularity. Sleep experts are seeing more “orthosomnia” among their patients — an unofficial diagnosis describing hyper-fixation on perfect sleep.

People become overly focused on logging the right amount of not only total sleep but certain types of sleep, too. This can heighten anxiety and interfere with sleep — paradoxically, making it harder to achieve restful slumber. Much of this fixation stems from the availability of data on their wrists, thanks to sleep trackers.

“I have patients who put 100 percent faith in their sleep trackers and if they don’t get the exact recommended numbers, they worry they’re harming their health,” said Robert Oexman, DC, chief science officer at mattress maker iSense. “There can be any number of events leading to a poor night’s sleep, and if you’re already prone to perfectionism and anxiety, a sleep tracker will only compound that.”

Of course, the flipside of this trend is a crisis in sleep “self-regulation” — trusting yourself (not technology) to know how well you’re sleeping and gauge your body’s needs. If you’re becoming fixated on sleep, it might be time to relearn this skill, just as Stern did.

When Tracking Spells Trouble

Modern sleep trackers gather a variety of data points, like your breathing rate, heart rate, and body movements. Putting it all together, the trackers then report how long you spent asleep, awake, and in different stages of sleep, like deep sleep and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep.

But what’s important to understand is that the trackers are built on averages and can report wrong information. “The trackers do a decent job, but they often provide inaccurate measurements,” said Nicole Short, PhD, a clinical psychologist at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. “We need to give context around the tracking.”

That context includes the fact that brief wakeups throughout the night can be normal — usually occurring when we shift from one sleep stage to the next — and they don’t necessarily impact the quality or quantity of sleep. And the trackers use averages for their measurements when sleep needs are highly individualized.

“The tracker will choose an ideal amount of sleep, like eight hours, and if you don’t get it, it dings you,” said Chris Winter, MD, a neurologist and sleep specialist in Charlottesville, Virginia. “You might only need seven hours of sleep. So take the ratings with a grain of salt.”

ll of this becomes problematic when the information makes you overly anxious and focused on what your tracker tells you. Certain personality types are more prone to this phenomenon, especially those with existing anxiety or perfectionist tendencies.

“I’m competitive, so I wanted to hit all the numbers,” Stern said. “I already hyper-schedule my life, so when I was scheduling my sleep and not hitting my targets, it caused anxiety.”

Returning to Self-Regulation

If any of this sounds like you, it may be time to relearn how to self-regulate your sleep — a skill helpful to anyone, not just the sleep-tracker obsessed. Step one is setting aside your tracker, at least for a while, said Oexman. He suggests 4 to 6 weeks as a starting point.

“It doesn’t have to be forever, but you need to rely on how you feel after a night’s sleep, not how your tracker tells you to feel,” he said.
