Kuano residents send SOS NAIMOS  over rampant illegal mining destruction

0
Devastating effect of illegal mining

Residents of Kuano in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region have issued an urgent and passionate appeal to the government, environmental authorities, and security agencies to intervene immediately in what they describe as a growing illegal mining crisis that is devastating farmlands, polluting vital water bodies, and threatening the very survival of the community.

According to the residents, the activities of illegal miners popularly known as galamsey have intensified in recent months, leaving behind widespread environmental destruction and severely undermining the agricultural livelihoods upon, which the people of Kuano depend.

The concerns were captured in a press statement signed by Daryl E. Bosu, Deputy National Director of A Rocha Ghana, who raised alarm over the escalating environmental damage being inflicted on the community by unregulated mining operations.

Residents say large expanses of fertile agricultural land, including cocoa farms, food crop plantations, and other productive farmlands, have been ripped apart by excavators and heavy mining machinery in the reckless search for mineral deposits. Lands that once supported farming families and contributed significantly to local food production have reportedly been reduced to pits, mounds of earth, and degraded landscapes unsuitable for cultivation.

For a predominantly farming community like Kuano, the destruction has become more than an environmental concern, it is rapidly evolving into an economic and social crisis. Many families, residents say, are beginning to lose their only dependable source of income as agricultural productivity continues to decline under the pressure of illegal mining encroachment.

Equally alarming is the contamination of streams and other water sources that serve as the lifeline of the community. Residents lament that water bodies used for drinking, household activities, and irrigation have become heavily polluted by siltation, mining debris, and potentially toxic substances associated with illegal extraction practices.

Community members fear that continued pollution of these water sources poses serious public health risks, threatens food security, and could permanently damage the ecological balance of the area if urgent action is not taken.

“If this destruction is allowed to continue, future generations will inherit barren lands, poisoned rivers, and a broken local economy,” one concerned resident noted, echoing the fears shared widely across the community.

Leaders in Kuano disclosed that several attempts have been made to halt the encroachment, including appeals to local authorities and direct efforts by residents to discourage the illegal miners from continuing their activities. However, they say those efforts have yielded little success, as the operators continue their activities unabated, allegedly taking advantage of weak enforcement and slow institutional response.

The community is now calling on the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) to urgently deploy operational teams to Kuano to stop the destruction before it reaches irreversible levels.

Residents are also appealing to the Ayensuano District Chief Executive to treat the matter as a district emergency by mobilizing environmental agencies, traditional authorities, and law enforcement bodies to coordinate an immediate response.

Additionally, they are demanding the swift deployment of police personnel and other state security agencies to clamp down on the illegal miners, restore order, and safeguard the community’s remaining natural resources.

For the people of Kuano, this is no longer simply a fight against illegal mining. It is a battle to preserve their ancestral lands, protect their water sources, sustain their farming livelihoods, and secure the future of a community whose existence is deeply tied to agriculture and a healthy environment.

As the cries for help grow louder, residents say they can only hope their plea will be met with swift action before Kuano’s rich lands and life-sustaining waters are lost forever.

Government must reward VRA, GRIDCo engineers for saving Akosombo – Lawyer Agyekum

0
Lawyer George Agyekum - Private Legal practitioner and Consultant

Lawyer George Agyekum, a private legal practitioner, has recommended that VRA and GRIDCo engineers and technicians who rose to the challenge of the devastating fire incident at GRIDCo’s Akosombo switchyard on April 23, 2026 be adequately compensated.

GRIDCo station

“The government needs to reward these persons with some honorarium” he said in an interview with The Chronicle noting that it is not enough to be  praised to work and sacrifice for Ghana.

The Konongo-based legal brain emphasised that Cash rewards is a good incentive for patriotism.

He explained that foreign consultants and engineers would have charged us (Ghana) millions of dollars and still the job may not even have been fully done or completed.

Lawyer Agyekum said during the PNDC era, hundreds of cadres and patriots made what he called “Revolutionary sacrifices” in many roles for this country and ended up as paupers to the extent that some even couldn’t fend for their children.

According to him, this should be a thing of the past and that in the instant matter people who work with dedication and sacrifice should be rewarded adequately explaining that there is no different market for patriots. Patriots patronise same market and pay same price for goods, services, food and rent just as any other Ghanaian, he stressed.

The concerned lawyer cited the case of footballers and boxers who won coveted trophies for Ghana, but promises of rewards were not fulfilled.

The April 23 fire disaster destroyed the switchyard control room, making it difficult to dispatch the entire 1,020MW installed capacity of the Akosombo Generating Station (AGS) to GRIDCo.

The Akosombo Dam

According to reports, the incident destroyed all switches, control, protection, monitoring and communication systems in the control room, cutting off the entire 1,020MW Akosombo Power Plant from the national grid. Though the generating units at AGS remained fully operational, the pathway for the control of transmitting power to homes, industries, and businesses nationwide was lost.

The ensuing situation meant that about 25 per cent of Ghana’s average national electricity demand was suddenly unavailable and Ghana faced the grim prospect of prolonged load shedding, widespread power instability, and significant economic disruption as Ghana’s largest power producer had effectively been stalled.

In their moments of desperation, VRA and GRIDCo engineers and technicians rose to the challenge and demonstrated exceptional Ghanaian engineering excellence, resilience, and innovation by jointly designing an innovative bypass solution instead of waiting for months for a conventional rebuild.

By their efforts, new power and control cables were routed through cable trenches, directly connecting the Akosombo Generating Station to the switchyard, while completely bypassing the destroyed control room as well as re-engineering the transmission configuration of the switchyard to supply the load centres directly.

Lawyer Agyemkum noted that the joint VRA-GRIDCo team meticulously reviewed, redesigned, and remapped the entire protection and control scheme ensuring that the safety, reliability, and stability of both the generating plant and the national grid were fully maintained.

Reports further indicated that while reconstruction of a permanent switchyard control centre is expected to take a minimum of six months to implement, all six generating units were successfully connected to the grid within six days, completing the entire interim restoration effort on April 30, 2026 just seven days after the fire incident.

It is for this bold engineering intervention, which averted months of power rationing and prevented massive economic losses that typically accompany prolonged energy shortages and saving millions of cedis in emergency power procurement and preserved industrial productivity nationwide.

It is upon the basis of this that the senior advocate and Legal Consultant is recommending to the   government  to consider a compensation package for the VRA and GRIDCo engineers, technicians, and support staff who worked tirelessly through sleepless nights to design and execute this exceptional solution.

“Their dedication, brilliance, and unwavering commitment go beyond mere sacrifice. This is an act of patriotism and must be recognised,” Lawyer Agyekum said. He contended that their efforts restored power, safeguarded grid stability, and reaffirmed the resilience of Ghana’s power sector in the face of severe adversity.

His position on the compensation, based on reports which he is privy  to, is also premised on the fact that the absence of Akosombo  would have deprived the grid of critical ancillary services, including voltage support, grid frequency regulation, and black-start capability (ability to restart power plant with external electricity) making the national grid significantly more fragile.

It is for these shared views that Lawyer Agyekum says his recommendation is worth considering because delays in restoring AGS could have triggered the shutdown of Kpong Generating Station, which relies on regulated downstream water releases from Akosombo, which situation could have resulted in an additional loss of 160MW of installed capacity.

Grammy award-winning rapper Kid Cudi has dropped singer-songwriter M.I.A. from his Rebel Ragers tour over “offensive remarks” which left his fanbase “upset”.

Videos online show the British star being booed after suggesting she was unable to perform her song Illygal, about an undocumented migrant, because it could apply to members of the crowd.

Writing on Instagram, Kid Cudi said he’d been flooded with messages after the Paper Planes singer’s comments during a support slot at his show in Dallas, Texas.

In his statement, Kid Cudi said it was “very disappointing” and claimed he had explained to M.I.A.’s management that he “didn’t want anything offensive” prior to the tour.

Kid Cudi, real name Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi, also said he was led to believe that M.I.A.’s team had understood his request to avoid potentially divisive statements.

M.I.A., real name Mathangi Arulpragasam, was the warm-up act for Kid Cudi’s Rebel Ragers tour.

Footage from a 2 May performance shows the audience erupt into boos after the singer says: “I’ve been cancelled for many reasons. I never thought I would be canceled for being a brown Republican voter.”

She is also heard to say she can’t perform the song Illygal, “though some of you could be in the audience”.

In a follow-up post on X, she stated she was not able to vote in the US, despite describing herself as a Republican voter.

London-born singer M.I.A. began releasing music in 2003, and became a sensation thanks to her unconventional sound and discussion of political themes influenced by her upbringing as a child of Sri Lankan parents.

She reached major recognition with her 2008 song Paper Planes, which hit number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for Record of the Year at the Grammys.

She was also nominated for an Oscar for “O… Saya”, from the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack.

More recently, the star has courted criticism with her stances on certain topics.

Russian air attacks kill five at Ukraine’s Naftogaz gas facilities

Vladimir Putin, Russia President

At least five people have been killed in Russian air strikes on Ukrainian state-run gas facilities in the Poltava and Kharkiv regions, officials said, a day after Kyiv and Moscow announced unilateral ceasefires to take effect later this week.

Three employees and two rescue workers were killed and 37 people were wounded in the overnight missile and drone barrage, Serhiy Koretskyi, the CEO of Ukraine’s state energy company Naftogaz said on Tuesday.

“We have sustained significant damage and production losses. This was a combined strike involving UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) and ballistic missiles,” said Koretskyi.

He added that the attack cut gas supply to nearly 3,500 customers.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian authorities had shown “utter cynicism” by announcing a ceasefire and then launching missile and drone attacks on his country.

“Russia could cease fire at any moment, and this would stop the war and our responses. Peace is needed, and real steps are needed to achieve it. Ukraine will act in kind,” he said on X.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a two-day ceasefire in the war with Ukraine on May 8 and 9 to mark Russia’s World War II victory. Zelenskyy countered with his proposed pause in fighting starting on the night of May 5.

Zelensky condemns Russian ‘utter cynicism’ as it strikes ahead of truce

Emergency services personnel work to extinguish a fire a vehicle following a Russian drone attack

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned Russia’s “cynicism” for continuing to launch deadly attacks despite seeking a pause in hostilities.

Russia, which is preparing to hold celebrations to mark victory in World War Two this weekend, said it would hold a ceasefire on 8 and 9 May and threatened a “massive missile strike” on central Kyiv if Ukraine violated the truce.

But Kyiv said it would observe an open-ended ceasefire from midnight on 6 May, and that Ukraine would act “symmetrically” from that point on.

As the warring sides were announcing the moves, five people were killed and dozens injured in combined missile and drone strikes across Ukraine overnight.

“It’s utter cynicism to ask for silence to hold propaganda celebrations and to launch such missile-drone attacks every day beforehand,” Zelensky said.

As the two ceasefires appear to be unilateral – meaning the two sides have not agreed on their terms, length or monitoring.

“We have made our proposal,” Zelensky said, urging Russia to lay down arms “and move to real diplomacy”.

Ukraine’s earlier, open-ended truce is likely a way for Zelensky to show that his country is willing to start an immediate and lasting ceasefire and that any violations will be pinned on Russia.

“We believe that human life is of incomparably greater value than the ‘celebration’ of any anniversary,” he wrote on Telegram.

Ahead of its own midnight ceasefire, Ukraine also launched a series of aerial attacks on Russia, hitting an industrial area in Kirishi in the Leningrad region and a factory that produces military components in Cheboksary, in Russia’s Chuvash Republic.

Zelensky said domestically-produced Flamingo cruise missiles were used to strike the Cheboksary factory, some 1,500km (930 miles) away from the front line. An unverified nighttime video showed a fast-moving object and large explosion.

The Russian defence ministry later confirmed it had downed six Ukrainian Flamingos as well as 601 drones.

Romanian Prime Minister ousted in no-confidence vote

Romania Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan

Romanian MPs have voted to remove Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan in a no-confidence vote in parliament.

The largest party, the left-wing Social Democrats, abandoned Bolojan’s four-party coalition last month and joined the far-right opposition to call for the vote.

The Social Democrats have repeatedly clashed with Bolojan, a liberal, over austerity measures aimed at reducing the budget deficit.

President Nicusor Dan, who is now expected to try to rebuild the coalition under a different prime minister, has sought to give reassurances that Romania – an EU and Nato member which borders Ukraine – will retain its pro-Brussels stance.

A total of 281 MPs voted for the no-confidence motion, well above the 233 needed for the measure to pass.

Elections are not due until 2028, and though a snap poll is unlikely, financial markets are concerned that the turbulence could mean Romania wavers in its commitment to narrowing the EU’s biggest budget deficit.

Romania’s currency, the leu, fell to a record low against the euro ahead of Tuesday’s vote.

Bolojan’s coalition came to power 10 months ago during efforts to curb the rise of the far-right Alliance for Uniting Romanians (AUR), which won one-third of parliamentary seats.

Dan himself won a tense presidential poll last May, after a far-right victory in elections the previous year was annulled over allegations of campaign fraud and Russian interference.

The coalition had started to reduce the deficit but frictions with the Social Democrats grew as the leftists’ voter base was hit by austerity.

The party has said it is prepared to rejoin a pro-EU coalition under a different prime minister.

Hegseth says US, Iran ‘ceasefire is not over,’ as tensions rise in Strait of Hormuz

0
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says the US effort to guide vessels out of the Strait of Hormuz is temporary, and “separate and distinct” from ongoing military operations in the region, one day after the US military began operations to guide ships in the waterway. He also said “the ceasefire is not over.”

Ceasefire tested: Iran has attacked US forces more than 10 times since the ceasefire went into effect, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine said. Iran’s parliament speaker earlier said the US and its allies have jeopardized secure shipping, after a day of attacks in the strait, adding “we have not even begun yet.”

Demand for oil is falling at the fastest rate seen outside the Covid pandemic, experts say, as businesses and consumers cut consumption due to sharply increased prices and a scarcity of supply in some regions. Meanwhile, US gas prices have increased by 50% since the start of the war.

The United Arab Emirates said that its air defenses are “currently dealing with a missile threat” from Iran.

In a brief statement Tuesday, the Interior Ministry told residents to remain in a safe place and follow guidance from the authorities.

The scope of the attack was not immediately clear. It comes a day after Iran launched a missile and drone attack against the UAE for the first time since the ceasefire began in early April.
