National Chairman Aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Awentami Paul Afoko, has called on the party to rebuild the confidence of Ghana’s business community and reclaim its traditional image as the political home of enterprise, innovation and wealth creation.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra to formally announce his bid for the NPP National Chairmanship, Mr. Afoko admitted that some policies implemented under the party’s previous administration had eroded the confidence of sections of the private sector, resulting in economic uncertainty and growing dissatisfaction among businesses.
He said the party must openly acknowledge those concerns, reflect on its shortcomings and take deliberate steps to restore trust.
“To the business community, I say this: the NPP must regain your trust. We know that mistakes were made. We know that some of you felt disappointed.
“We know that some policies and actions created hardship, uncertainty or frustration. As a party, we must have the humility to listen, to learn and to correct what went wrong,” he stated.
Mr. Afoko said the NPP’s core philosophy has always centred on economic freedom, private enterprise and creating opportunities for individuals and businesses to prosper.
According to him, the party must return to those founding principles by strengthening engagement with key actors across the economy, including traders, manufacturers, farmers, transport operators, artisans, professionals, contractors, technology entrepreneurs and emerging start-ups.
“The NPP remains the natural home of business, enterprise, innovation and wealth creation. We must work with traders, manufacturers, farmers, transport operators, artisans, professionals, contractors, technology entrepreneurs and young start-ups to build a new prosperity agenda,” he said.
He stressed that a strong partnership between government and the private sector remains indispensable for creating jobs, attracting investment and sustaining economic growth.
Mr Afoko noted that restoring confidence would require more than campaign rhetoric, insisting that the party must demonstrate a renewed commitment to policies that promote entrepreneurship, encourage private investment and create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
He maintained that the NPP’s political resurgence would largely depend on its ability to convince Ghanaians, particularly entrepreneurs and business owners, that it remains committed to building an economy driven by innovation, opportunity and shared prosperity.
