Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has accused the Mahama administration of turning several campaign promises into “scams”, as he launched a fresh attack on the government’s record at the party’s National Delegates Conference in Kumasi.

Dr Bawumia cited promises on cocoa prices, the automatic posting of teachers and nurses, the cancellation of teacher licensure examinations and payments to customers of collapsed financial institutions as examples of what he described as failed commitments.

“The promises to cocoa farmers to increase the cocoa price to 6,500 cedis has turned out to be a scam,” he said.

“The promise of automatic posting of teachers and nurses and the improvement in their conditions of service has turned out to be another scam. The promise to cancel teacher licensure examinations has proven to be another scam.”

He also took aim at the government’s 24-hour economy, questioning the need for 24-hour markets in communities.

“This is a 24-hour demonstration of buildings for so-called 24-hour markets. Even the NDC cannot explain why people in my village or your village will wake up at 12 midnight to go and buy koobi in the market at midnight,” Dr Bawumia said.

‘Markets instead of hospitals’

The NPP flagbearer accused the government of abandoning projects inherited from the previous administration, particularly the Agenda 111 hospital programme.

He said the programme, which was intended to provide district hospitals across the country, had stalled under the NDC administration.

“Apparently, this government prefers 24-hour markets to hospitals,” he said.

Dr Bawumia also accused the government of allowing the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme to deteriorate, particularly in the area of feeding, while failing to fulfil its promise to abolish the double-track system.

He further criticised the government over electricity tariffs, saying the NDC had promised reductions under its 24-hour economy programme but that businesses were instead facing higher electricity bills.

Labadi demolition

Dr Bawumia also expressed solidarity with traders, artisans and small business owners affected by the demolition at La Pleasure Beach in Labadi.

He said years of investment had been destroyed and called on the government to engage the affected persons, provide alternatives and pay compensation.

“A government that promised new jobs is instead destroying the ones that Ghanaians created for themselves,” he said.

On the economy, Dr Bawumia defended the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, saying it had helped protect the cedi from external shocks.

He accused the government of making “unprecedented losses” from the programme in 2025.

He also criticised the government’s handling of illegal mining, saying the galamsey menace had worsened despite promises by the NDC to tackle it within months.

Drug trafficking, justice

The former Vice President called for a bipartisan parliamentary investigation into drug consignments linked to Ghana that have been intercepted abroad.

“Arresting couriers is not enough. Ghanaians want to know who is financing these shipments and how they keep getting through,” he said.

Dr Bawumia also accused the government of what he described as the “weaponisation of state power”, alleging that opposition figures were being subjected to different standards of justice.

He cited the detention of the Manhyia South MP, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, after the MP voluntarily surrendered to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

He said the NPP would ensure equal application of the law if it returned to power.

Dr Bawumia urged the newly elected NPP executives to unite the party and focus on holding the government accountable ahead of the 2028 elections.

He expressed confidence that the NPP would return to government in 2029 and said the party would draw lessons from its previous administration to improve its performance.

“When the NPP assumes the reins of office in 2029, we shall bring to bear the lessons of our successes and the challenges to do a way better job in these and other areas than this government is doing,” he said.
