Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to uphold the confidence of the Ghanaian people and respect the principle of popular sovereignty as the party seeks to reorganise its structures.
In a recorded message played at the NPP’s 2026 National Delegates Conference in Kumasi , Mr Kufuor said the party’s understanding of democracy must reflect the principle that sovereignty ultimately belonged to the people.
“The confidence of the people of Ghana. And let us show true respect to the idea and the vision that true sovereignty is for the people generally,” he said.
“When we do that, then our definition of democracy will conform with the idea,” the former President added.
He wished the delegates success in their deliberations and urged them to take his message seriously.
“I wish you well and I wish you success in this conference. May God bless NPP and all of you,” he said.
Akufo-Addo calls for unity
In a separate recorded message, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo welcomed delegates to the conference and described it as an important stage in the party’s reorganisation.
He said the conference was particularly significant as the party elected new national officers who would work with its presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and parliamentary candidates towards the 2028 general elections.
“This gathering represents an important step in our party’s reorganisation as we elect new national officers,” he said.
Mr Akufo-Addo urged delegates to rise above sectional interests and elect leaders capable of uniting the party and rebuilding its fortunes at all levels.
“I am confident that guided by the theme, ‘One Party, One Purpose, United for Victory’, the delegates will rise above sectional interests and elect leadership capable of uniting our ranks and rebuilding our fortunes at every level,” he said.
He acknowledged that the task ahead would be demanding and require commitment from party members.
“It will be an arduous task, which will demand of us all our energy, time, determination and loyalty,” he said.
Mr Akufo-Addo expressed confidence that the party could regain power in 2028, drawing parallels with its victories in 2000 and 2016.
He said an NPP government under Dr Bawumia would promote the rule of law and the welfare of Ghanaians, in line with the party’s motto of “Development in Freedom”.
He concluded by wishing the delegates a successful conference and reaffirming his commitment to the party and the country.
