Bakpa Tosukope Residents Demand Justice After Community-Funded School Project Is Destroyed

Residents of Bakpa Tosukope in the Volta Region are calling on the Ghana Police Service and other relevant authorities to expedite investigations into the destruction of a community-funded school project, nearly a year after the incident occurred.

The school project, which was initiated and financed by members of the community, was intended to provide a safe learning environment for children after the community’s mud-and-brick kindergarten structure collapsed. According to residents, the new school was expected to reduce the long distance children travel to access education and minimize the risks associated with commuting, including accidents involving commercial motorbikes.

The project officially began on January 1, 2025, when the community celebrated its annual festival and organized a fundraising exercise to support the construction. Community members contributed money, building materials, and labour to commence the project. The event was attended by the Assembly Member, the area’s Member of Parliament, as well as representatives from Dela Radio and Mass TV.

However, on Sunday, July 27, 2025, the project suffered a major setback when unknown individuals allegedly destroyed the building’s foundation. Residents say people from a neighbouring community reportedly noticed a group of individuals moving with weapons, including guns, cutlasses, and knives, and alerted the police.

The suspects were subsequently arrested. According to the community, some of the arrested persons later admitted they had been sent by other individuals to destroy the school project.

Following the incident, officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) visited the site to assess the extent of the damage. The matter also received media attention after it was reported by Dela Radio.
