There is a current development ongoing, which the authorities concerned and connected have either not averted their minds thereto or to put it bluntly, they have adopted a wait and see approach and care not.

I have repeatedly mentioned it on this forum and elsewhere that, Ghanaians by nature and orientation have a penchant for turning blind eye to simmering issues till it gets out of hand. It is then that knee jerk reactions are adopted to tackle same, which has never addressed the issues, but attach dire consequences for the populace who normally act out of ignorance or are “lured” by the local authorities to do so.

A typical case is the ongoing demolition exercise of structures, which should not have been erected in the first place – this is certainly not the remit of today’s piece.

What am here to talk about is the emerging trend of vehicle (both new and used) sales points being sited at every nook and cranny of the cities, especially in Accra, as if it’s no one’s business.

l must state here that l have no qualms with people eking out a living, but certainly, this must not be done at the detriment of the environment and distort planned plan schemes of cities,  among others.

This is to say, there is currently an emerging trend of these facilities being cited on road junctions and intersections, which not only obstructs the view of motorists (sin against our road laws) and, again, the greenery hitherto there have been “touched”, and in its stead, gravels, paved blocks, concreted floors etc., have replaced same to enhance the activities of these vehicle vendors.

Kindly indulge me to mention, but two of such scenarios that have obstructed the view of motorists – at Apenkwa on the main Accra -Achimota stretch, the two branch roads linking the N1 highway have been sandwiched with a vehicle sale point. Again, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) – GIMPA by pass intersection.

l believe the various Assemblies (MMDAs), National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Department of Urban Roads (DUR), Ghana Highways Authority (GHA) and indeed the National Security are in deep slumber. Per this piece, l urge them to wake up and stem this tide before it is too late.

Need l say more?

Fractured Peace.
