Match day two of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season will see the early leaders attempt to consolidate their strong starts, while several established sides look to recover from disappointing opening results.

Hearts of Oak, Vision FC, Samartex and Bechem United all opened their campaigns with victories and will be hoping to maintain their perfect records, while Asante Kotoko, Aduana Stars, Heart of Lions and Bibiani Gold Stars will be chasing their first wins after being held or beaten on Match day One.

Among the weekend’s most intriguing fixtures are Bibiani Gold Stars’ meeting with Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko’s clash with Heart of Lions and Aduana Stars’ encounter with Samartex; three matches that bring together teams with contrasting fortunes from the opening round.

Gold Stars welcome Hearts

Bibiani Gold Stars face perhaps one of the toughest assignments when they host an in-form Hearts side still riding the confidence of their opening-day victory.

Gold Stars started the campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Bechem United. For the home side, the challenge will be to produce a stronger attacking performance after failing to score in their league opener.

Hearts, by contrast, could hardly have asked for a better beginning. The Phobians swept aside Berekum Chelsea 4-0, which result put them at the top of the league table, with the best attacking return after Match day One.

Coach Nebojsa Kapor will, therefore, be keen to keep his side’s momentum going, although Gold Stars will take some encouragement from the recent head-to-head record.

Gold Stars beat Hearts 2-1 in their most recent league meeting in March 2026, while the previous three encounters had ended in draws. Hearts’ last victory over Gold Stars came in October 2024.

The hosts will need to reproduce the resilience that has made this fixture competitive in recent seasons, while Hearts will be looking to demonstrate that their 4-0 opening-day performance was the beginning of a serious title challenge rather than simply an impressive start.

Can Lions devour Porcupines?

Asante Kotoko will also be looking for their first victory of the season when they welcome Heart of Lions.

The Porcupine Warriors were unable to beat newly promoted Debibi United in their opening match, surrendering a lead before eventually rescuing a 2-2 draw.

While the point prevented a losing start, it was not the result Kotoko would have wanted against a side playing its first-ever Ghana Premier League match. The Porcupine Warriors therefore enter Match day two with an immediate need to improve.

Their recent form also suggests there is work to do. Kotoko have managed only one victory in their last five matches, alongside two draws and two defeats.

Heart of Lions, meanwhile, also began with a draw, but theirs came against experienced opposition in Aduana Stars.

The Lions held Aduana to a 0-0 draw, earning a point without conceding. They currently sit among the sides with one point after Match day One.

Their recent record is slightly more encouraging, with two wins, one draw and two defeats in their last five matches. They will, however, face a significantly different test at Baba Yara against a Kotoko side expected to attack from the start.

History makes the contest even more interesting. Kotoko won the most recent league meeting 3-1 in January 2026, but the two sides also played out a goalless draw in October 2025. Their previous encounters have generally been tight, with neither team holding a dominant advantage across the recent meetings.

For Kotoko, home advantage and the pressure to deliver could work both ways. A victory would immediately settle some of the concerns created by the Debibi draw, but another failure to win could increase the pressure on the Porcupine Warriors.

Heart of Lions, meanwhile, will be hoping their defensive solidity can frustrate Kotoko and allow them to leave Kumasi with another valuable result.

Aduana face confident Samartex

Aduana Stars will have to raise their game when they host Samartex, who arrive in Dormaa with three points already secured.

Aduana opened their campaign with a goalless draw against Heart of Lions. Although the clean sheet provided some encouragement, the failure to score means they remain without a league goal after Match day One.

Emmanuel Abban, Aduana FC

The result placed Aduana on one point, and they will be eager to convert their defensive solidity into an attacking threat when Samartex visit.

Their recent form has been inconsistent. Aduana’s last five matches have produced one win, two draws and two defeats, including a 3-0 loss to Vision FC and a 2-0 defeat to Holy Stars.

Samartex, however, arrive with considerably greater confidence after their impressive 3-1 victory over Karela United.

Edwin Kofi Asamoah, Isaac Afful and Meschack Sowah Adjetey were on target as the Timber Giants began their campaign with three points. Karela managed a consolation goal, but Samartex had already done enough to secure a convincing victory.

That result lifted Samartex into third place with three points, behind Hearts of Oak and Vision FC on goal difference.

The Timber Giants will now be hoping to maintain that momentum, although their recent record against Aduana suggests the fixture could be considerably more difficult than their opening-day result indicates.

The most recent meeting ended 0-0 in February 2026, while Samartex had won the previous league meeting 1-0. Overall, Samartex have enjoyed the better results in recent encounters, recording three wins to Aduana’s one in the last five meetings, with one draw.

Aduana will therefore have to find a way to contain a Samartex attack that has already demonstrated its ability to score, while also solving their own problems in front of goal.
