The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to announce its official position on proposed amendments to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution after completing an internal review of the Constitution Review Committee (CRC) report and the government’s responses to its recommendations.
The party said its Constitutional and Legal Affairs Policy Committee had concluded its review of the CRC report and the government’s Position Paper dated July 30, 2026, and had subsequently prepared the NPP’s position paper.
The position paper will now be submitted to the party’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and the National Executive Committee (NEC) for consideration and adoption.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Chairman of the NPP Policy Co-ordination Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.
The statement said the NPP would communicate its official position on the proposed constitutional amendments to the Ghanaian public after the position paper had been considered and adopted by the party’s leadership.
The NPP said it had been formally consulted as part of the national constitutional review process and had made submissions to the CRC, which subsequently presented its report to the government.
The government, in turn, issued a Position Paper outlining its responses to the CRC’s recommendations.
Mr Oppong Nkrumah said the NPP’s internal review was consistent with the party’s commitment to inclusive and consultative decision-making.
He said the party remained committed to a transparent, inclusive and orderly constitutional review process that protected Ghana’s democracy, strengthened constitutional institutions and promoted political stability and national development.
The NPP has, however, not yet disclosed which of the proposed amendments it supports, rejects or seeks to modify.
Its forthcoming position is expected to add to the political debate over the proposed changes to the country’s constitutional framework and could have implications for efforts to build political consensus around the reforms.
