The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says it expects to complete a major upgrade of key sub-transmission lines in the Greater Kumasi area by June 5, 2026, in a move aimed at improving power supply reliability and strengthening the region’s electricity network.

According to a statement signed by Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, General Manager for External Communications, on May 29, the project involves upgrading existing conductors between the KNUST Primary Substation and the Kaase Primary Substation, as well as from Kaase to the Ridge Bulk Supply Point in Kumasi.

The works include replacing existing 265 square millimetre conductors with larger 400 square millimetre conductors and replacing weak cables to enhance power transfer capacity.

ECG said the upgrade is expected to improve the reliability and stability of electricity supply across Greater Kumasi and surrounding areas. Upon completion, communities including Kaase, Kuntenase, Sewua and Bekwai are expected to benefit from improved voltage quality and a more dependable power supply.

The company added that the project will reinforce the sub-transmission link between the Kumasi 1 (K1) and Kumasi 2 (K2) Bulk Supply Points, thereby enhancing the resilience of the electricity network across the Ashanti Region.

ECG apologised for any inconvenience caused to customers and residents during the execution of the project, noting that the temporary disruptions are necessary to ensure a stronger and more secure electricity supply system for the region.
