The military-led government of Burkina Faso has suspended a major student association, the Union Générale des Etudiants du Burkina (UGEB), for an initial period of three months over allegations of “apology of terrorism.”
The suspension order was issued by the country’s Minister of State in charge of Territorial Administration and Mobility under the transitional authorities currently governing the West African nation.
According to the official order, the student association, recognised under receipt number N3922 of November 30, 2018, has been sanctioned under provisions of Burkina Faso’s laws governing freedom of association and national administration.
The document cited several legal instruments, including the Constitution, the Charter of the Revolution of April 1, 2026 and the country’s law on freedom of association enacted in July 2025.
Authorities stated that the suspension could be renewed beyond the initial three-month period.
“The Association called ‘Union Générale des Etudiants du Burkina’ abbreviated UGEB… is suspended for a period of three (03) months renewable for apology of terrorism,” the order declared.
The Secretary General of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Mobility has been tasked with ensuring the implementation of the directive, which is expected to be communicated to regional authorities and relevant state institutions.
The latest move reflects the increasingly hardline posture adopted by Burkina Faso’s military authorities amid ongoing security challenges linked to extremist violence in the Sahel region.
Since assuming power, the junta government has intensified measures targeting organisations and individuals perceived to be undermining state security or supporting extremist narratives.
However, the suspension of one of the country’s notable student movements is likely to trigger debate among civil society groups and rights advocates over issues relating to freedom of association and political expression under the transitional administration.
