A coalition of environmental campaigners and youth groups fighting illegal mining has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider the reported re-assignment of Col. Dominic Buah, Director of Operations at the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), describing the move as a potential setback in the fight against galamsey.

In a statement issued on May 27, 2026, Eco-Conscious Citizens, Environmental Campaigners, and the Atronsu Youth & Farmers Against Illegal and Small Scale Mining Association expressed concern that the reassignment could undermine gains made by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS).

According to the groups, NAIMOS has operated under difficult conditions, but had nevertheless demonstrated “boldness” by speaking against interference in its anti-galamsey operations.

The statement argued that changing the leadership at this stage raises questions about the government’s commitment to combating irresponsible mining activities.

“There is no doubt that some powerful people are unhappy with the effectiveness of some of the operations of NAIMOS,” the statement noted, while urging the President to reverse the proposed transfer in order to reinforce confidence in the anti-galamsey fight.

The groups particularly praised Col. Buah for what they described as decisive interventions in Atronsu, where NAIMOS reportedly responded to complaints from residents over illegal mining activities threatening the community’s main stream, which serves as the only source of drinking water.

According to the statement, NAIMOS removed excavators from the area and arrested some alleged illegal miners operating around the water body.

The campaigners further expressed worry that the reported “rotation” comes at a time when illegal miners are allegedly regrouping in the Atronsu area.

They also referenced the ongoing prosecution of five anti-galamsey activists, popularly referred to as the “Atronsu 5,” who are facing charges for allegedly damaging excavators during protests against illegal mining activities. The accused persons, the statement said, deny the allegations.

The groups thanked NAIMOS for its service and protection of the Atronsu stream, while reiterating their call on President Mahama to reconsider the reassignment of Col. Buah.
