The National Union of Tricycle Operators of Ghana (NUTOG) affiliated to the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), one of the country’s largest transport unions under the Trades Union Congress, has announced a 20% hike in fares effective June 22, 2026 across the Ashanti region. Rising operating costs and mounting financial pressures on drivers have been cited as reasons for the increase in fares.

The Union said the adjustment in fares had been approved during an online meeting of its Ashanti Regional Executive Council on 6 June.

An official notice signed by the union’s Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer, Mark Osei Mensah, indicated that NUTOG has directed zonal and station executives to communicate the new fares to members and engage passengers and other stakeholders ahead of implementation next week.

The union said operators were grappling with increasing expenses, including daily sales obligations, higher spare parts prices and rising lubricant costs.

“Members are advised to act professionally and maintain cordial relations with passengers during the transition period,” the statement cautioned

The fare increase is expected to affect thousands of commuters who rely on tricycles, popularly known as “Pragyia”, for short-distance travel in Kumasi and other communities across the Ashanti Region.

NUTOG appealed to the public to support the adjustment, describing it as a necessary response to economic realities facing operators.

The union said it had sought to keep fares affordable and lower than those charged by other transport providers, but argued that current operating conditions had made an increase unavoidable.
