The Tema Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) spent a total of GH¢13,079,669 on transformer replacements for the last quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026.

This information was disclosed to a section of the media by Ing Emmanuel Ankomah, the General Manager of the utility service provider in the region.

The meeting was held to brief the media on the operations of the utility service provider in 2025 and the first quarter of this year.

Giving the quarterly breakdown, Ing Ankomah said GH¢9,379,765 was used to replace 32 transformers for the last quarter of 2025 while GH¢3,699,903 was expended to replace 22 transformers for the first quarter of 2026.

The varied reasons for the replacements of the transformers included individuals who vandalised them and thus rendering them useless.

Another reason was where some community members, who did not have any technical knowledge of the operations of the ECG, switched phases on their own, thereby, causing overloads on the other phase, which sometimes caused the transformer to burn.

A third reason for the replacements had to do with vehicles that ran into such installations, causing them to have extensive irreparable damages, hence, needing replacements.

Explaining these actions as an unauthorised interference for which reasons the company could prosecute culprits when found, Ing Ankomah called on the public and communities, as well as their leaders, to help safeguard all ECG properties as they are needed to ensure stable power supply.

He lauded the various community leaders who alert ECG whenever there is an outage so that faults could be attended to on time.
