The Sekyedumase Community Bank PLC has reacted to the demolition of its office complex at Aboabo in Kumasi in the early hours of Monday, August 10, 2026 by the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly.
The demolition is said to facilitate the 24-Hour Economy Market project by the Assembly.
Dr. Dickson Osei-Assibey, Esq., Counsel for the bank, disclosed that prior to the demolition, the issue has been in court pending determination, noting that both the Municipal assembly and the contractor have been deliberating on the matter, which has been adjourned to October 12, 2026.
According to Dr. Osei-Assibey, Esq., there is a mandatory interlocutory injunction (to restrain the Assembly from tampering with the property), and that there is also an application from the Municipal assembly, to which the bank has filed an affidavit in opposition.
He also said the assembly had not filed any affidavit in opposition to the bank’s injunction.
Dr. Osei-Assibey, Esq. described the action of the Assembly as “not being fair, as well as an act of trespassing” and believed the court would take the matter up, disclosing the land (on which the building was) belongs to the community.
He explained that per available documents the community gave the land to the bank for development to serve them and has operated the bank there for over 33 years. The counsel indicated that even if the Assembly wanted to evict the Bank, to facilitate the 24-Hour Economy Market, it was a matter of deliberation and time.
Mr Michael Kwabena Afriyie, Chief Executive Officer of Sekyedumase Community Bank PLC indicated that the demolition of the building has gone down with the assets of the bank running into millions of Ghana Cedis.
He said, however, that the bank has all inventory of all the assets in the building, with its customer database intact due to technology and the existence of the bank for the past 46 years and that the demolition of one branch does not necessarily affect the bank’s general operations.
The CEO disclosed that the Assembly has not served the bank any eviction notice, noting that the Bank has been cooperating with the Assembly for the past five months, while the matter was pending before the court.
Currently, the CEO said, the bank is managing the situation and serving the customers within the Aboabo community at an improvised office opposite the demolished building,
Meanwhile, the AsokoreMampong Municipal Assembly has denied demolishing a structure belonging to Sekyedumase Community Bank PLC at the Aboabo Market.
The Assembly described the allegation as “fabricated, completely false and without basis,” saying it engaged the bank and other occupants for nine months before the June and July demolition exercises.
It insists the bank’s structure was not demolished, stressing that it had already entered an appearance in a court case filed by the bank and would not undermine the judicial process.
The Assembly has reaffirmed its commitment to due process and warned that the allegation could be an attempt to discredit the authority.
