Police ‘Dispatch’ 5 Land Guards … during gun battle

Personnel from the Anti-Armed Robbery and Anti Landguard Units of the Ghana Police Service, last week Thursday, shot and killed five persons suspected to be land guards, during a gun battle at Bortianor in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

The car the deceased bandits were using for their operations

The five were among a gang of armed elements who have been visiting terror on residents and estate developers in that part of the capital.

A release from the police dated June 10, 2023 signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Grace Ansah-Akrofi, states that: On June 8, 2023 the police conducted an operation targeting criminal elements involved in robbery and landguard activities. These individuals have been terrorising residents and landowners in Bortianor and nearby communities.

It went on that upon spotting the approaching police team, the suspects opened fire from their hideout, prompting the police to return fire. As a result, five of the suspects were injured and later pronounced dead at the hospital. The remaining suspects fled the scene and are still on the run.

The release continued that, exhibits retrieved from the scene included one (1) AK47 Assault rifle, ten (10) rounds of AK47 ammunition, one (1) pump action gun with nine (9) rounds of BB cartridges, two (2) pistols with ten (10) rounds of 9mm ammunition, one (1) unregistered Toyota Tacoma pickup, four (4) motorbikes, three (3) of which are unregistered, a knife and pepper spray.

It further states that the police are actively pursuing the remaining suspects, some of whom are believed to have sustained gunshot injuries during the operation.

The Police is, therefore, appealing to the public, especially residents of the Bortianor community to promptly report any individual with gunshot wounds who may be seeking medical or herbal treatment.

It would be recalled that sometime last month, the head of the Kwame Anu family at Bortianor, Kpakpo Allotey, was shot and killed by unknown gunmen in what was suspected to be contract killing.

He was attacked in his room, brought out and subjected to machete attacks, before finally being shot to death.

The incident has since brought about shockwaves and a state of fear at Bortianor and its surrounding communities.
