The Ashanti South Police Command has assured the public it is working around the clock to bring highway robberies to the barest minimum in the country.

Some ammunitions retrieved from the robbers

Addressing the media at Bekwai yesterday, the Regional Commander, DCOP Joseph Hammond Nyaabah said the latest operation they have conducted, which spanned the Ashanti, Northern and Upper East Regions, led to the arrest of two suspects (deceased), recovery of weapons and ammunitions that had been buried in the bushes by the robbers and the unravelling of a broader robbery network responsible for several attacks.

According to him, the Command gathered intelligence that suspect Sumaila Munkaila, also known as Guda, declared wanted in connection with multiple road block robberies, was hiding in Tamale in the Northern Region.

DCOP Nyaabah said the police succeeded in arresting Sumaila Munkaila, 37, at Vitin in Tamale.

He said during interrogation the suspect admitted his involvement in several robberies, including the attack on the convoy of His Excellency Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam, the Chiana-Pio on July 20, 2025.

The Commander said Sumaila Munkaila then led the police to Savelugu, where suspect Umaro Musah was arrested.

He stated that both Sumaila Munkaila and Umaro Musah told the police that their weapons had been concealed underground in a bush at Yizesi, near Fumbusi, in the Upper East Region, following their robbery on the Yizesi-Fumbusi stretch.

The police led the two to the location at Yizesi for the retrieval of the weapons.

The Commander said during the search, unknown persons opened fire on the police in the bush, and the two suspects attempted to escape, but the police returned fire.

In the ensuing exchange of gun fire, Sumaila Munkaila and Umaru Musah sustained gunshot injuries while a police officer was also hit by bullets.

He said a search for the ammunitions revealed one AK47 assault rifle with 28 rounds of ammunition, one CZ805 assault rifle loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition and one single barrel gun, among others, were retrieved.

The Regional Commander said the police then sent the two injured suspects and the wounded police officer to the Tamale Government hospital where the suspects were pronounced dead.

Their bodies, he said, have been transferred to the Bekwai hospital for preservation and autopsy.
