The Ghana Police Service has arrested two men after intercepting 100 compressed parcels of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs concealed in fertiliser sacks at the Asawase Market in Kumasi.
The arrests were made by the Manhyia District Police Command during an intelligence-led operation conducted on Monday, July 21, 2026, following information that suspected narcotic drugs were being transported under the guise of legitimate goods.
According to a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service, officers led by the Manhyia District Commander, supported by personnel from the Manhyia Divisional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Zongo Police Station, moved to the location after receiving what the police described as credible intelligence.
The operation resulted in the arrest of Osman Bassein, 37, and Mohammed Abdul-Razak, 38.
Police said a search carried out in the presence of independent witnesses uncovered 13 fertiliser sacks. Although the sacks appeared to contain second-hand clothing, a further inspection allegedly revealed 100 compressed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs hidden beneath the clothing.
The suspected narcotics were photographed at the scene in line with evidential procedures before being secured for forensic examination.
The two suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with investigations. Police said they would be processed in accordance with the law, subject to the outcome of the investigations and forensic analysis of the seized substances.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command commended members of the public whose information led to the operation, describing public cooperation as vital in the fight against crime.
The Command urged residents to continue reporting suspicious activities through the Police emergency numbers 18555 (MTN toll-free), 191, or 112, to support efforts to combat crime in the region.
