Editorial: Ghana Cannot Wait, Dedicated Bus Lanes Are Essential

0
Traffic congestion in Accra

When President John Dramani Mahama delivered his State of the Nation Address (SONA) last week, he spoke of plans to introduce 300 new buses for Intercity STC, Metro Mass Transit and private operators. What value does this bring to the millions trapped daily in overcrowded, unsafe and slow-moving public transport?

Cities like Accra, Kumasi, and Sekondi-Takoradi are gridlocked not because there are not enough buses, but because there are no dedicated lanes to allow buses to move efficiently. Buying more buses without reserving road space for them is a recipe for repeated failure. The Chronicle is compelled to say that without dedicated bus lanes, Ghana’s transport system will continue to fail its people.

We hold the view that buses alone cannot solve mobility problems. Without dedicated bus lanes, these vehicles will be trapped alongside private cars, and commuters will continue to endure long delays, unsafe conditions, and overcrowding. This is why we argue that dedicated lanes are not optional, they are the backbone of any modern urban transport system.

Urbanisation intensifies the problem. Ghana’s urban population has grown from 50 per cent in the year 2000 to nearly 58 per cent today. Accra alone houses over five million residents. Over three million registered vehicles – 70 per cent in Accra and Kumasi jam narrow, poorly maintained roads. As a result government cannot continue to rely on stopgap measures while ignoring the infrastructure necessary for effective public transport.

Public transport in Ghana is largely informal. Trotros and taxis operate without schedules or stops. Drivers routinely overload passengers and charge exorbitant fares. Weak traffic management, reckless driving, and poor enforcement exacerbate congestion. For over a decade, authorities have watched this crisis unfold. The Chronicle asks: why has the government not made dedicated bus lanes a non-negotiable policy?

We maintain that a modern transport strategy must place dedicated bus lanes at its core. These lanes allow high-capacity buses to move reliably, reduce travel times, and encourage citizens to use public transport rather than private cars. Complementary measures – expanded rail networks, cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, upgraded roads and smart traffic management – are important, but all rely on buses being able to move freely in priority lanes. Without this, no urban transport system can function.

Road congestion is choking Ghana’s economy, polluting the air, and destroying quality of life. The Chronicle will not remain silent as commuters continue to suffer due to poor planning and weak government action. Importing buses without dedicated lanes is a superficial solution. Ghana needs a bold, comprehensive plan that gives public transport the space it needs to work.

We call on President Mahama and his administration to stop repeating past mistakes. Dedicated bus lanes must be the centerpiece of a national mobility strategy. Only then can buses, trains, and other public transport modes operate efficiently, safely, and sustainably. Ghana cannot afford incremental measures. The time for action is now and the first step is clear: give our buses dedicated lanes and give Ghanaians the mobility they deserve.

The Chronicle stresses this clearly: dedicated bus lanes are not a detail, they are the foundation of any credible transport system. Without them, all other measures will fail.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a former two-term councillor in Lagos State and intercepted several illicit drug consignments in multiple states as part of intensified operations against drug trafficking across Nigeria.

The suspect, 45-year-old Sheleru Sadiq Olalekan, a former Councillor at the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Council and currently a legislative aide, was arrested at his residence in Ilado, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State.

According to the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, in a statement on Sunday, operatives acting on credible intelligence raided his residence, where 40 kilograms of skunk, a strain of cannabis, were discovered in one of the rooms.

During interrogation, Olalekan reportedly admitted ownership of both the drugs and the property where they were found.

He also confirmed that he had previously served two terms representing the Orimedu community in the local government council.

In a separate operation in Abuja, NDLEA officers intercepted a 32-year-old businessman, Emeka Hyginus Okwor, travelling in a vehicle from Obollo-Afor in Enugu State to Zuba in the Federal Capital Territory.

A search of his luggage revealed 1,000 pills of tapentadol concealed inside baby diapers.

The suspect reportedly confessed that he was transporting the drugs to Guduwa village in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, where he operates a provision store.

Another interception occurred along the Kabba–Obajana highway in Kogi State, where NDLEA operatives on patrol seized 1.55 kilograms of Colorado, a synthetic strain of cannabis, hidden inside a standing fan carton.

The drugs were traced to a 36-year-old Cameroonian national, Mey Ali Muhamat, from Maroua in the Republic of Cameroon. He was travelling in a commercial bus from Lagos to Cameroon via Lokoja, Kano and Maiduguri.

In Niger State, NDLEA operatives patrolling the Mokwa–Jebba road intercepted a commercial bus coming from Ibadan in Oyo State.

A search uncovered 500 pieces of improvised explosive device (IED) components concealed inside a white sack intended for delivery to a recipient in Pelegi.

A follow-up operation led to the arrest of the intended recipient, 21-year-old Osama Abdullahi, in Mashegu Local Government Area of the state.

Government condemns arrest of 42 Nigerians in Mozambique, demands immediate release

CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa

The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has condemned the arrest of 42 Nigerians in Mozambique, describing the action as unacceptable and calling for their immediate release.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja and signed by the Commission’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Dabiri-Erewa expressed concern that the Nigerians were allegedly arrested without any formal charges being filed against them.

According to the NiDCOM boss, “It was disturbing that only Nigerians were reportedly singled out during the operation”.

Describing the incident as distasteful and worrying, she stressed that “if any of the individuals had violated Mozambican laws, the appropriate step would be to arraign them before a court of competent jurisdiction rather than detain them without explanation”.

Dabiri-Erewa noted that the alleged selective arrest of Nigerians suggests what could be described as a xenophobic action against Nigerian citizens.

She therefore urged the Mozambican authorities to either immediately release the detained Nigerians or follow due legal process by formally charging them in court.

“According to reports, the Nigerians were allegedly picked up at a spare parts market, where they were singled out among other traders and individuals present at the location without any clear allegations or explanations for their arrest,” the statement noted.

The statement added that the individuals involved have been confirmed to be legal residents in Mozambique, while the country’s Attorney General is reportedly unaware of any charges filed against them.

“Some of the detained Nigerians were beaten, had their personal belongings confiscated, and several of them are currently ill and in need of medical attention,” the Commission alleged.

NiDCOM reiterated its call for fair treatment and respect for the rights of Nigerians living abroad.

Healthcare remains a vital pillar for national development -Dr. Albert Opoku

0
Dr. Albert Opoku - Principal, Sampa College of Nursing and Midwifery

The Principal of Sampa College of Nursing and Midwifery, Dr. Albert Opoku has noted that Healthcare remains one of the most vital pillars for national development, stressing that  a healthy population is a productive population.

“Health is a human right and not a privilege to be purchased,” Mr. Opoku noted, referencing Kofi Annan, former UN General Secretary.

Dr. Opoku who presided over the Annual Performance Review of the Jaman North District Directorate of the Ghana Health Services noted that the Performance Review was not just a routine evaluation exercise, but a strategic moment of reflection, accountability and renewed commitment to the health of our people, emphasising that “What gets measured gets improved”.

He indicated that the forum was to measure, not simply to criticise, but to learn; not only to review numbers, but to assess impact; not purely to identify gaps, but to design solutions.

The Principal noted that Reviews provide an opportunity to examine service delivery indicators, evaluate maternal and child health outcomes, assess disease control interventions, as well as review health financing and logistics systems, and strengthen collaboration among stakeholders.

He indicated that in the health sector, performance review is not about fault-finding, but rather progress tracking, as well as transparency, accountability and most importantly about improving patient outcomes.

The Principal pledged the commitment of the College of Nursing and Midwifery to partner the Jaman North District Health Directorate, noting that his outfit was not only to train competent nurses and midwives, but also to produce professionals who are compassionate, ethical and community-oriented.

The Principal of Sampa College of Nursing and Midwifery further noted that excellence in healthcare demands discipline, integrity, and continuous learning, acknowledging the health challenges faced by health professionals – maternal mortality, teenage pregnancy, malaria and non-communicable diseases among others.

“Let us remember that statistics represent lives. Behind every percentage is a mother, a child, and a family. Behind every indicator is a community depending on our competence and dedication,” the Principal reminded the participants.

Touching on the theme “Accountability in Health Governance”, Dr. Albert Opoku disclosed that it was very important at the district level, where policies meet reality, urging participants to celebrate successes such as immunisation coverage improvements, skilled delivery rates, and disease surveillance efforts, while boldly confronting areas that require strengthening.

He reminded them of World Health Organisation’s advice that “The ultimate goal of health systems is to improve people’s health” and stressed the need to be guided by these principles.

The Principal of Sampa College of Nursing and Midwifery further urged all stakeholders to strengthen inter-facility collaboration, invest in staff capacity building, improve data quality and reporting systems, enhance community engagement, promote professionalism and ethical practice.

He recommended that plans must be monitored and commitments fulfilled and translated into action stressing that the future of healthcare delivery in Jaman North District depends on the decisions stakeholders make.

“We have received about 30 million cedis from government for the contractor working on the Santasi Roundabout to Bekwai Roundabout road, the Kumasi mayor confirmed during Fakye TV’s DayBreak Morning Show, hosted by Kojo Marfo last week.

“In the next three months, we expect at least one lane to be completed and opened for public use,” he stated.

“This stretch is a lifeline for people in Santasi, Kokoben, and surrounding communities and   any delay in emergency health transport can endanger lives.

“Completing this stretch will help reduce travel time and ensure patients can reach Komfo Anokye Hospital faster,” he emphasised.

Mr. Ofori Agyeman Boadi clarified that the end of April scheduled for the completion of the project would likely extend to mid-June.

He said from the current progress of work, it is anticipated that the project would be completed by the second week of June.”
