Chelsea Champs League hope dented by Ipswich Town

0
Jadon Sancho, Chelsea

Chelsea’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League were dented with the Blues held to a 2-2 draw against Ipswich at Stamford Bridge.

Despite Chelsea’s early dominance, it was Ipswich who took the lead when on-loan Brighton midfielder Julio Enciso poked home Ben Johnson’s cross to score his first goal for the club.

Enciso turned provider for Ipswich’s second, chipping a brilliant ball to the back post for Johnson to head in his first goal of the season and give the visitors a two-goal lead at the break.

An Axel Tuanzebe own goal 20 seconds into the second half reduced the deficit, but Chelsea had to wait until ten minutes from time to find an equaliser when substitute Jadon Sancho curled a wonderful effort into the top corner from a short-corner routine.

Trevor Chalobah and Pedro Neto both went close for Chelsea but the draw leaves the Blues in fifth, three points behind third-placed Nottingham Forest and ahead of sixth-placed Aston Villa on goal difference.

Ipswich are 14 points adrift from safety following Wolves’ win against Tottenham at Molineux.

Jeers rang out around Stamford Bridge as Enzo Maresca opted to take Noni Madueke off for Sancho in the second half.

The reaction may well have been more to do with the removal of Madueke, who was causing trouble down Ipswich’s left, than it was to do with Sancho’s introduction.

But the on-loan Manchester United winger hasn’t exactly hit it off with Chelsea supporters since his move.

The appearance of Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum, former minister for Education at Adum Blue Light in Kumasi to commiserate with the recent fire victims seems to have given credence to the speculations that he will contest the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary somewhere next year.

Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum with some of the traders

Though the educationist credited for transforming the educational sector under the Akufo-Addo government has not officially announced his intention to contest the primary, his appearance at Adum, a suburb of Kumasi, which was recently consumed by fire, according to a reliable source, is enough evidence that he would apply for the top NPP job.

According to a message posted on his face Book wall yesterday, Dr Adutwum said he donated GH¢100,000.00 and 200 bags of cement to support efforts to rebuild the place.

Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum at Adum Blue Light in Kumasi

Dr Adutwum is the third politician from the opposition NPP to have visited the burnt market. Former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, who are all eying the NPP presidential slot have visited the place.

Dr Adutwum posted the following message on his Facebook wall;

Today, I visited Adum Blue Light to commiserate with the victims of the fire disaster, which consumed their investments on March 21, 2025.

I was saddened to see how years of struggle by the traders to build their businesses had gone down the drain as a result of the inferno.

This underscores the need for sustained fire safety education in markets and public places as a country to prevent a recurrence of such devastating disasters going forward.

It is my conviction, as a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Ashanti Region, to contribute my widow’s mite to ameliorate the impact on the businesses of the victims, who require all the needed support to get back on their feet.

I, therefore, donated an amount of GH¢100,000.00 and 200 bags of cement to support efforts to rebuild the place. I also encouraged them not to give up and to work closely with relevant authorities to pick up the pieces and further assured them of my continuous support in these difficult times.

The Dansoman Circuit Court has granted a combined bail of GH¢3.8 million to two men charged with attempting to extort money from Dr. Mohammed Sani Abdulai, a Programme Director of a public financial project.

The accused – Nigel Cedrick Bailey – a 52-year-old building contractor and Yahaya Alhassan Galadima, a 48-year-old self-styled activist – were arraigned on two counts: conspiracy to commit extortion and attempted extortion, contrary to sections 23(1), 18(1) and 151 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

The two pleaded not guilty before Her Honour Halimah, who presided over the proceedings. She granted each accused person bail of GH¢1.8 million with three sureties, one of whom must justify the bail amount with title deeds equivalent to the sum.

Both accused are also required to deposit their Ghana Cards with the court registry and report to the police every two weeks.

Due to the high financial implication of the alleged offence, which exceeds the prosecution’s jurisdiction, the case has been referred to the Attorney General’s Department for legal advice. The court is set to reconvene on May 28, 2025.

Background of the Case

According to the prosecution led by Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder, the complainant, Dr. Abdulai, had contracted Bailey in November 2023 to build a house in Accra.

Midway through the project, Bailey reportedly began neglecting his duties, prompting the complainant to raise concerns with the site foreman.

Bailey allegedly abandoned the project and later recruited Galadima to pose as a journalist in a bid to extort GH¢1.7 million from the complainant.

Galadima allegedly threatened to tarnish the complainant’s reputation through media publications if the money was not paid.

He followed up with two letters under the letterhead “Ghana Eye,” demanding the payment. The complainant, after failed attempts to settle the matter through legal counsel, reported the incident to the police.

On February 5, 2025, the complainant arranged a meeting at the Lancaster Hotel under the guise of making payment. Police moved in and arrested both suspects, leading to their prosecution.

Health Benefits Of Guava Fruit And Leaves

0
Guava

Guavas are tropical fruits that have become popular worldwide for their delicious taste and numerous health benefits. This nutritious fruit has light green or yellow skin and can be oval or round in shape. The edible seeds and vitamin-rich pulp make guavas very healthy additions to one’s diet.

Both the guava fruit and leaves of the guava plant offer medicinal properties that can boost immunity, regulate blood sugar, improve digestion, and more.

Let’s explore the many advantages of incorporating guavas into your lifestyle.

Types of Guava

Many delicious guava varieties exist in India, named for the colour of their skin/ pulp or place of origin. Some popular types include:

  • Allahabad Safeda
  • Sardar (Lucknow 49)
  • Pant Prabhat
  • Lalit
  • Dhareedar
  • Chittidar
  • Arka Mridula

For juices, pulps, and purees, manufacturers favour the naturally sweet white and pink guavas. The Indian varieties with higher natural sugar content add taste and sweetness to beverages.

Health Benefits of Guava

  1. Regulates Blood Sugar: The powerful antioxidants and fibre in guava can help regulate blood sugar levels. Studies show guava leaf extracts may improve insulin resistance and long-term blood sugar control. Drinking guava leaf tea has reduced blood sugar after meals by over 10% in diabetics. This makes guavas a great choice for managing diabetes.
  2. Supports Heart Health: Guavas promote heart health in many ways. The high antioxidant content protects the heart against free radical damage. Guavas also provide potassium and fibre while lowering LDL cholesterol and blood pressure.
  3. Relieves Menstrual Cramps:For women who experience painful periods, guava leaf extract may help. Studies show taking guava leaf extract daily significantly reduces the intensity of menstrual cramping pain. The anti-inflammatory effects of guava leaves provide a natural way to ease period cramps.
  4. Improves Digestion: With 12% of your recommended daily fibre per fruit, guavas promote healthy digestion and bowel movements. The fibre helps relieve constipation. Additionally, guava leaf extract has antimicrobial effects that destroy bad gut bacteria which cause diarrhoea. This improves gut health and digestion.
  5. Aids Weight Loss: At only 37 calories per fruit, guavas make for a delicious, low-calorie snack between meals. Their high fibre content keeps you feeling full, curbing cravings. So, guavas can fit into any weight loss plan without losing out on key nutrients.
  6. May Have Anti-Cancer Effects: Test tube and animal studies reveal guava leaf extracts may inhibit or stop the growth of cancer cells. Guavas have very high antioxidant content, which protects cells from damage that can lead to cancer. One test-tube study found guava leaf oil to be 4 times more potent than a leading cancer drug. However, medical research is still ongoing for more conclusive results.
  7. Boosts Immunity: Guavas provide over 2 times the RDI for immune-boosting vitamin C. This vitamin helps your body produce infection-fighting white blood cells. Consuming guavas regularly protects against deficiency, ensuring a strong immune system.
  8. Benefits Your Skin: The wide range of antioxidants in guavas protects your skin from oxidative damage that accelerates ageing. Guava leaf extracts applied topically may also help treat acne breakouts thanks to antimicrobial effects. So, guavas can nourish your skin from the inside and out.

Court Gavel

A 19-year-old labourer, Abdul Gafar Abubakar, has been arraigned  for allegedly breaking into a private residence and stealing electrical cables valued at GH¢20,000.

Abubakar, who resides at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, is facing three counts: unlawful entry with intent to commit a crime, unlawful damage, and stealing—offences contrary to various sections of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

According to the prosecution led by Chief Inspector Emelia Mensah, the incident occurred on March 24, 2025, at Sowutuom Rescue Point in Accra.

The complainant, Paul Mensah Vicker, a trader, reported that the accused had unlawfully entered his newly built two-storey residence.

The brief facts presented in court indicate that Abubakar rode an unregistered Apsonic motorbike from Kwame Nkrumah Circle and parked it near the complainant’s fenced property under the cover of darkness.

He allegedly scaled the wall and accessed the building via scaffolding left by masons. Inside, he reportedly cut and packed installed electrical cables from both the first and second floors into a fertilizer bag.

The accused was intercepted by witnesses who had heard suspicious noises and saw him emerging from the adjacent house.

A search revealed a concealed jackknife, a screwdriver left at the scene, and a pair of scissors near the parked motorbike.

He was handed over to the police and formally charged. Abubakar has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit, who presided over the court, granted bail in the sum of GH¢70,000 with three sureties. Two of the sureties must be public servants earning not less than GH¢2,000 monthly and one must be justified.

The accused is also required to deposit his Ghana Card at the court registry and report to the police biweekly.

The case has been adjourned to April 19, 2025 for further hearing.

The prosecution is expected to serve the accused with all disclosures and witness statements ahead of the next sitting.

Australian High Commissioner announces expansion of major technology in Ghana

0
High Commissioner Berenice Owen-Jones

The Australian High Commission in Ghana has announced the expansion of Digital Earth Africa, a state-of-the-art satellite monitoring system, to help Ghana track climate change, monitor deforestation and improve sustainable mining practices.

At a climate symposium at Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU), High Commissioner Berenice Owen-Jones explained how Digital Earth Africa will provide Ghanaian researchers and policymakers with real-time environmental data to enhance climate resilience.

“Africa has the tools and talent to lead the world in climate innovation, and Australia is here to provide the technology and partnerships needed to achieve this,” Owen-Jones stated.

The project will support Ghana’s efforts to curb illegal mining, track water resources and mitigate the effects of climate change.

With Australia’s commitment to tech-driven climate solutions, Digital Earth Africa will revolutionise how Ghana monitors and protects its natural resources.

Berenice Owen-Jones also emphasised that Australia is well-positioned to support Ghana in unlocking the full potential of its renewable energy and critical mineral resources.

“Africa is at the center of the global energy transition, and Australia is eager to strengthen partnerships with Ghana to build a more sustainable future.

“From renewable energy innovation to responsible mining, Australia is sharing its expertise and investing in Africa’s green economy,” Owen-Jones stated.

The symposium, themed: “The Future of Africa-Australia Clean Energy and Critical Minerals Partnerships”, was organised by the Australian High Commission in partnership with GCTU. The event brought together academics, policymakers, private sector leaders and climate experts to discuss sustainable energy solutions and the role of critical minerals such as lithium, bauxite and rare earth elements in powering the global transition to renewable energy.

Why Ghana and Australia’s Partnership Matters

Africa is home to vast renewable energy resources, including solar, wind and hydro, yet access to electricity remains a major challenge, with over 600 million people on the continent lacking reliable power.

At the same time, Ghana is rich in critical minerals essential for the clean energy revolution – including bauxite, which is processed into aluminum for solar panels and electric vehicle components.

Australia, one of the world’s largest producers of lithium and a leader in sustainable mining is supporting Ghana to adopt best practices in critical mineral extraction, ensuring environmental sustainability and long-term economic benefits.

Owen-Jones highlighted Australia’s Direct Aid Programme (DAP), which funds community-led climate resilience projects in Ghana, including initiatives that support responsible mining, empower women in renewable energy, and provide clean cooking solutions in rural areas.

Australia’s $60 billion climate finance strategy also aims to drive investment in hydrogen technology, sustainable mining, and green infrastructure across Africa.

As Ghana positions itself as a hub for Africa’s clean energy and minerals industry, Australia’s expertise and investments will be crucial in ensuring that development is both sustainable and inclusive.

Health Alert: Consuming meats singed with car tyres can harm you

Singeing meat with car tyres

A research conducted by six Scientists has established health hazards associated with consuming meats that are singed with tyres in Ghana.

In a study, which was conducted in five cities -Kumasi, Accra, Koforidua, Tamale and Ho – the team gauged the concentration of a chemical called Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and the carcinogenic risks of cattle and goat meats singed with either firewood, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) or tyres.

After analysing the samples, collected mainly from abattoirs in these aforementioned towns at Clinical Analysis Laboratory (Can-Lab) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), they established that among all the sources of fuels used to singe animal hide, tyre has alarming carcinogenic elements than the rest.

The team discovered that tyre-singed meats exhibited Benzo[a]pyrene, a highly carcinogenic chemical, which is formed during combustion.

“Tyre-singed meats exhibit significantly higher PAHs concentrations (P = .01304) compared to those singed with firewood and LPG.

“Benzo[a]pyrene was the predominant PAH in tyre-singed cattle and goat meats, with concentrations of 23.1 mg/kg and 12.16 mg/kg, respectively”, the study revealed.

The study further explained that having singed the meats with Liquefied Petroleum Gas, Firewood and Tyres respectively, it attempted to wash it but tyre-singed meat recorded alarming concentration  than other fuels, raising concerns about health implications.

“Washing singed meats reduced PAH levels, yet tyre-singed samples retained higher and dangerous concentrations of carcinogenic elements than those singed with other fuels.”

The Researchers disclosed that double scientific tests, namely Analysis of Variance(ANOVA), a statistical test used to analyse the difference between the means of more than two groups and Tukey HSD test, which is used to test differences among samples showed greater effect of meat singed with tyre.

“Statistical analysis using ANOVA confirmed a significant effect of fuel type on PAH16 concentrations (P = .01304). The Tukey HSD test indicated a significant difference between LPG and tyre (P = .0105).

The study further disclosed that estimated daily intake (EDI), the amount of a substance, like nutrients or contaminants that a person is expected to consume daily, which is often used for assessing potential health risks or determine dietary needs, shows worrying risk associated with tyre-singed meats.

“Estimated daily intake (EDI) calculations highlighted potential health risks, particularly from tyre-singed meats, which exceeded regulatory limits set by health authorities.

The research was conducted by Prosper Manu Abdulai, Chika Ossai, Anthoneth Ndidi Ezejiofor, Chiara Frazzoli, Joaquim Rovira,Osazuwa Clinton Ekhator, Caleb Kesse Frempong and Orish Ebere Orisakwe  and  published in the Sage Journal.

Two mystery flights at KIA vrs Chinese deportations

0
AirMed flight

By now it should be clear why it is not in the national interest to appoint party loyalists as CEOs of State owned Enterprises (SOEs).

When the interest of the state clashes with that of their political party, and when the unadulterated truth is needed to expose culprits in crimes against Ghana, truth becomes unknowable, particularly when it becomes evident that the government is to blame. That is why Ghanaians have, since the return to multi-party democracy, tended to be dubious about statements issued by SOEs in times of national crises.

Take the brouhaha over the presence of two foreign-owned aircraft at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), AirMed flight N823AM and the Cavok Air Antonov An-12B, and their content thereof. Why has it been difficult to believe Ghana Airports Company’s statement announcing that its investigations “found no evidence of illegal substances on board either of the aircraft”?

Why has what was supposed to be a whistle-blowing patriotic duty by an MP turned into a full-blown political shouting bout?

Answer: The matter has been “elevated” to the level of NPP/NDC football, and the CEO happens to be an NDC loyalist.

On the other side of the coin, couldn’t the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, have just ended his whistle-blowing on a non-partisan note instead of miring it in political controversy with a categorical statement-of-fact (his fact) that the two aircraft in question were involved in transporting narcotics and cash?

What is the basis of his allegation? Why has he refused to collaborate with the security agencies appointed by the President to do the probe? Simple truth: he has no evidence, just suspicions.

Panned to the Government’s camp. Questions are being asked which are yet to be answered satisfactorily by Government. For example, asks the NPP, “Isn’t it curious that both aircraft developed faults while in Ghana?”

My counter-question to the NPP, however, is: how can we ever know the truth without a probe? What is the truth without evidence?

To my mind, the omnibus invitation by the NPP to the international community could have been narrowed to an invitation to it to nominate men or women to be part of the probe. That way, the probe report would leave no lingering doubts.

See where partisanship is landing us: nowhere, except in noise.

Today, my piece is in two parts. Part Two questions the decision of the ruling NDC to deport and not jail foreign nationals involved in illegal mining.

Less than five months ago, in January 2025, the thrice-minted President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, had occasion to remind Ghanaians that the cane that was used against Takyi would always be there to be used on Baah.

This article is to remind him of the eternal truth of that statement.

Results of the 2025 first quarter post-election poll by Global Info Analytics  released last week showed that 68% of Ghanaians blamed NPP’s heavy defeat in the 2024 elections on former President Akufo-Addo.

Only eight years before, in 2016, the same man was swept to unprecedented victory in the election that made him President of Ghana. He won by a one-million-vote difference. By the time we voted again in 2020, the sins of Akufo-Addo had halved the gap by 500,000 votes.

In 2024, the man and his party suffered the heaviest electoral defeat in Ghanaian history.

One of the sins of that regime was its decision, announced by Senior Minister Osafo Maafo in 2018, to deport rather than jail Aisha Huang, the Chinese queen of Galamsey.

So come 2025, how did it enter the mind of Mahama that the verdict of Ghanaians will be different in 2028 in the light of this deportation decision? Did he, as Baah, forget Takyi’s cane?

On April 8, this year, a radio station announced that its checks had confirmed that “foreign nationals, once deported, are handed over to law enforcement authorities in their home countries for prosecution.”

To Ghanaians who know what Galamsey has done and is doing to the environment and the people’s health, this information offers cold comfort.

Since the return of NDC, more than 100 foreign nationals, mostly Chinese citizens, have been deported for offenses related, mostly, to illegal mining.

Deportation? When Ghanaian babies are being born without limbs, some without eyes; when GWCL cannot afford the cost of treating the heavily contaminated raw water; when we are losing our forests, a nation that has started importing water?

In an interview on Joy FM, a member of government explained why the Chinese are being deported. “Our jails are overcrowded,” he said. That’s rubbing salt into our wounds. Are our prisons too overcrowded to contain Chinese but not Ghanaians?

For a government whose appointees, while in opposition, shouted loudest to crucify Osafo Maafo for announcing the Akufo-Addo government’s decision to deport Aisha Huang, it is sad that the NDC has forgotten that this is Ghanaians’ ntamkesie.
