Former Zambia President, Mr. Edgar Lungu

The Nigerian government has extended condolences to the Government and people of the Republic of Zambia on the passing of His Excellency Edgar Chagwa Lungu, former President of the Republic of Zambia, who died on June 5, 2025, at the age of 68.

The Federal Government extended the condolence in a statement by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.

The statement recalled that Lungu’s administration implemented initiatives to promote inclusivity, national unity and economic diversification, among others.

The statement said Lungu served Zambia with dedication from 2015 to 2021, steering the nation through significant milestones, including infrastructure development and regional diplomacy, while upholding the spirit of “One Zambia, One Nation”.

“The Government of Nigeria also acknowledges President Lungu’s contributions to strengthening Africa’s collective voice on the global stage and his commitment to regional solidarity.

“We therefore stand in solidarity with the Lungu family, the Patriotic Front, and all Zambians during this period of national mourning.

“Nigeria joins the international community in celebrating his life and times. May his gentle soul rest in peace,” the statement added.

Kano State asks Govt to pay compensation for cancelling durbar celebrations

Kano durbar celebrations

The Kano State government is demanding compensation from the Federal Government for cancelling Durbar celebrations for two consecutive years in Kano.

Alhaji Tajo Uthman, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, made the demand on Sunday, when the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II,  paid the Sallah homage to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the Government House.

According to Uthman, the state had suffered huge financial losses due to the suspension of the annual cultural event, saying that it traditionally attracts local and international tourists.

He explained that the Durbar is recognised by UNESCO as a heritage event, stressing that during the festivities, Kano generates substantial revenue from both foreigners and visitors from across the country.

The commissioner stated that the economic impact of the cancellation has been significant enough to affect the state’s annual budget.

“The Federal Government must take responsibility for the economic impact of the cancellations and compensate the state accordingly,” he stressed.

He added that it is time they demanded reparation for the losses incurred and called for the immediate resumption of Durbar celebrations in the state, describing the cancellations as regrettable.

Petrol not expensive in Nigeria –Dangote

President of Dangote Group of Companies, Aliko Dangote

The President of Dangote Group of Companies, Aliko Dangote, has named the road leading to the Dangote Refinery after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Dangote spoke at the launch of the reconstruction of the Deep Sea Port Access Road in Lagos State on Thursday.

He also said that it was a relief to see the majority of fuel stations that were previously non-functional now operational across the country, vowing that there would never be petrol queues again.

Furthermore, Africa’s richest man stated that fuel is not expensive in Nigeria, adding that a litre of Premium Motor Spirit is sold at higher rates in other African countries.

“The majority of fuel stations that were not working, they are now back to work; there is no more shortage, no more queues, and there will never be,” he said.

“Some people here in Nigeria might think that petrol at less than N900 is expensive, but there is nowhere in West Africa where petrol is not selling above $1, which is N1,600,” Dangote said.

Petrol is sold between N800 and over N1,000 across Nigeria.

Kaduna Anglican Bishop Criticises Tinubu, Govs Over Early 2027 Election Campaigns

0

The Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Kaduna, Most Reverend Timothy Yahaya, has called on President Bola Tinubu, National Assembly and state governors to prioritize governance for which they were elected rather than focusing on campaigning for re-election in 2027.

The cleric, who pointed out that it was too early to start election campaigns in just the mid-term of the present administration, criticized political leaders for prioritizing power retention instead of addressing the numerous socio-economic problems confronting the nation.

“Before this regime is two years in office, they started politicking, I think this is a bad culture for governance in our country. And I want to plead with the authorities, let’s play down politics. How can we finish an election before a full circle, we are already campaigning for another circle? What happened to governance?.

“I want to plead with our politicians, I want to plead with the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and INEC, if it is possible, all political activities should be banned. Only nine months to the election, that ban should be lifted so that those who are elected to govern this country can give us their best.

“Honestly speaking, I don’t think it’s a good development that we have not seen good governance, and we see billboards everywhere. It’s very insulting, very degrading and other civilised climes will think we are jokers in this country”.

Bishop Yahaya also took a swipe against opposition politicians who defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing them as mere opportunists whose action was driven by selfish reason, and not for any ideological convictions.

He said: ”These politicians should ask themselves, do they even know where they are coming from and where they are going?. Most of them in APC today, I can say without any fear of contradiction, 70 per cent of them have been in PDP. So, it is the same group of people. And who are they? They are all opportunists, anywhere the National cake is, they want to eat from it.

Ghana Horticulture Expo 2025

The Accra International Conference Center is set to become the epicentre of agribusiness innovation and transformation as Ghana prepares to host over 200 exhibitors and more than 3,000 international trade visitors at the highly anticipated Ghana Horticulture Expo 2025.

Slated under the theme “Innovate, Transform, Sustain: Driving Growth in Ghana’s Horticultural Sector,” the Expo represents a pivotal moment in Ghana’s bid to shift from being a raw produce exporter to a value-added, globally competitive horticulture powerhouse.

Jointly organised by the Federation of Associations of Ghanaian Exporters (FAGE) and the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), the Expo is more than a showcase of fruits and vegetables – it is a national declaration of intent to realign the country’s agricultural sector with global value chains, job creation, and climate-smart innovation.

The event will be graced by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, whose keynote address will reaffirm the government’s commitment to transforming agribusiness into a strategic pillar of the economy.

His presence signals a renewed focus on youth employment, inclusive growth, and resilience in the face of climate change.

Speaking ahead of the Expo, Mr. Davies Narh Korboe, President of FAGE, emphasised the significance of the event:

“The Ghana Horticulture Expo is not just an event—it is a vision materialized. It reflects our deep resolve to transition Ghana from a raw produce exporter into a value-added, globally competitive horticulture powerhouse.”

He continued: “We are not only showcasing our fruits, vegetables, tubers, and herbs. We are showcasing the future of Ghana’s economy – one that is inclusive, sustainable and export-ready, operating around the clock.”

What to Expect

More than a trade fair, the Expo will serve as a strategic convergence point for Business-to-business (B2B) matchmaking with international buyers, high-level policy roundtables and expert panels focused on agri-policy and innovation, export readiness training sessions for emerging businesses and spotlights on women and youth-led agribusinesses and climate-smart technologies

At its core, the Ghana Horticulture Expo 2025 tells a story of resilience, innovation, and economic transformation.

It celebrates the untold stories of smallholder farmers, young entrepreneurs, and women-led enterprises who are reimagining the possibilities of agribusiness on a global stage.

The occasion wasn’t just about football – it served as a platform for connection, celebration and the exploration of new business opportunities.

Guests were treated to premium hospitality, interactive activities and a lively performance from Ghana’s own reggae sensation, Samini, adding to the excitement.

However, the night’s highlights came with the recognition of four lucky winners of Mastercard’s Spend and Win campaign.

Executed in partnership with GTBank, Consolidated Bank Ghana, GCB Bank and National Investment Bank, the promotion offered cardholders a chance to win an all-expenses-paid luxury experience.

The winners and their guests were awarded an exclusive two-night stay at Aqua Safari Resort, including chauffeur-driven transport, premium accommodation, fine dining, wellness treatments and a private screening of the UEFA Champions League Final.

Kudos National Security, Volta, but…

0

I wish to call on all regulatory agencies and stakeholders in the fight against environmental degradation to investigate how a timber company, whose permit had expired in December, 2024 could still rely on that document and be felling trees to do its business.

On 5 June, this year, the Volta regional branch of the National Security, led by its head, impounded some fresh logs being loaded into containers at Awate-Agame in the Volta Region, after days of gathering intelligence.

The Ghanaian agents of the expatriate loggers produced documents permitting the felling of the trees of a special species.

Unfortunately, the permit had expired in December, 2024 thereby rendering the logging activities unlawful.

A few days earlier, workers of the company were seen busily felling some trees with a chainsaw just by the road at Awate-Todzi, while a tractor was hauling more fresh logs from the forest reserve.

A 40-footer container on a trailer was being loaded. This practice, according to some residents, has been ongoing for some time, but they were told that the loggers had legal authorisation of the Forestry Commission.

When the leader of the security team from Ho rang the regional forestry officer from the site, not only did he challenge his authority, he also yelled at him and sought to order him not to interfere with the work of the loggers, which he described as legitimate.

When the security boss drew his attention to the expiry date as reflected on the document, he said that information had not got to his attention, but insisted that the ongoing logging was in line of law.

As that part of the country is, for now, spared the galamsey menaces, there is a need to preserve the forest cover and the environment, most especially as the president intends to phase out wooden desks from schools in his commendable efforts to preserve the environment.

Residents say they often see light-skinned men roaming the area in taxis during logging time by the local boys.

They, thus, suspect them to be behind the plundering of the forest reserve. Even on 7 June, 2025, a truck without a number plate in front of it loaded fresh logs from the area heading towards Accra.

Further investigations revealed that the type of trees being felled is for the production of paper, but this claim has not been investigated.

It was also gathered that the logs are exported in their raw form and could have long been shipped, but the depreciation of the US Dollar against the Cedi has made it that they are being piled up in Accra in the meantime.

Granted that the species being felled are Eucalyptus and gmelina, which are among the permissible species to be logged under a permit, does the expiration of their papers not render their continued logging a violation of the nation’s laws?

I, therefore, wish to draw the attention of all stakeholders in the fight to protecting the environment to this for a thorough investigation, while the regional security team together with its leader is commended for their efforts.

$1bn Worth of Gold Smuggled Out of Ghana Annually?

0
Gold Bars

Ghana could be losing significantly on her gold resources, as a new study shows that the West African state is already facing economic challenges and loses an egregious amount of gold through smuggling each year.

According to a statement issued by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime, an organisation focused on tackling global threats posed by organised crime, over $1 billion worth of gold is illicitly trafficked out of Ghana annually.

This revelation emerged from a three-year study into illegal gold mining, locally known as galamsey.

Illegal Mining Spreads to New Frontiers

The report highlights the Savannah Region as an emerging epicenter for galamsey activities. While the Western and Ashanti regions remain long-standing artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) hotspots, the Savannah Region has witnessed a significant uptick in recent years.

“Only 18% of sites surveyed in the Savannah Region were over ten years old, compared to about one-third in the Western Region,” the report disclosed.

This rise in activity, according to Marcena Hunter, Director of Extractives at the Global Initiative, directly correlates with the sharp increase in gold smuggling out of Ghana.

Criminal Infiltration and Structural Shifts

The study suggests that Ghana’s ASGM sector is undergoing a dramatic transformation, shaped by criminal networks, foreign interests and mounting environmental degradation.

“A new report, based on three years of fieldwork, satellite analysis and interviews, provides an evidence-based mapping of illicit mining, showing how informal operations are reshaping local economies, environments, and power structures,” the statement explained.

It also notes that the gold sector continues to evolve in complexity, with both licit and illicit operations expanding their footprint across Ghana.

To produce the report, the Global Initiative relied on advanced technological tools. Satellite imagery, remote sensing, and predictive modeling were deployed to track the rapid spread of illegal mining activities and anticipate future movements of alluvial gold operations.

“Remote sensing technologies were used to assess the spread, intensity and impact of mining activities,” the report said.

Foreign Nationals Driving Illegal Operations

A key finding of the investigation was the involvement of foreign nationals, particularly Chinese and Burkinabé, in illegal gold mining. The report cites them as major actors in introducing new methods, funding networks, and reshaping the supply chain.

“The injection of investment and technology, often by foreign nationals, particularly Chinese and Burkinabé is significantly shaping unlicensed mining operations, gold supply chains and financial flows,” the report explained.

Additionally, the study found that cyanide-based processing techniques introduced from neighboring countries are increasingly replacing traditional methods, posing further environmental and health risks.

The Global Initiative also drew attention to financial malfeasance within mining zones, particularly the potential use of gambling venues for laundering proceeds from illegal mining.“Casinos in Ghanaian mining areas present a high risk for money laundering,” the report noted.

Gender-Based Violence and Human Trafficking

Beyond environmental and economic harm, the study raised alarms about human rights abuses, especially the sexual exploitation and trafficking of women in galamsey areas.

“There is a worrying rise in the sexual exploitation of women in mining communities, with patterns consistent with trafficking,” the report emphasised.

Political Links and State Complicity

Perhaps most disturbingly, the report suggests possible links between illegal mining networks and political actors, pointing to a deeper crisis of governance and impunity.

“The future of Ghana’s gold sector is closely linked to evolving power dynamics and competition for control and profits from the sector,” it stated.

In its final remarks, the Global Initiative stressed the need to expose and dismantle the complex networks driving illegal gold mining.

“Exposing secretive networks of actors, activities, and supply chains is necessary to address challenges posed by illicit actors and markets that adapt rapidly to regulatory and market changes.”

The organization called for multifaceted and adaptive strategies, urging Ghana and its partners to strengthen enforcement, bolster regulation, and expand community involvement.

“Addressing criminality in the sector requires multifaceted, innovative, and adaptive approaches that build on existing efforts,” the report concluded.
