Breast Care International Leads Breast Cancer Awareness Walk In Kumasi

The principal streets of the Kumasi Metropolis over the weekend witnessed Ghana’s Largest Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign Walk, which was organised by the Breast Care International (BCI) and its partners.

The mammoth crowd started the procession from the Kumasi Main Post Office at Adum, through Prempeh II Street, Kejetia (Dubai), Roman Hill and Alabar, with its rendezvous point at the forecourt of Manhyia Palace.

This year’s edition of the Walk, themed “A Cure Worth Fighting For”, sought to raise awareness, to break silence, reduce stigma surrounding breast cancer, to celebrate survivorship, encourage early detection and prompt action as well as its treatment.

The annual event also marked a significant rebranding of BCI, after more than 23 years of tireless dedication to women’s health in Ghana, across Africa and globally.

Addressing the mammoth crowd at the forecourt of Manhyia Palace, Dr. Mrs. Beatrice Wiafe Addai, Founder and President, BCI, disclosed that the Walk was to declare with “certainty” that breast cancer could be conquered – calling for all hands to be on deck.

She stressed the need for a continuous education of women, who need to know that breast cancer was a health issue and not caused by witchcraft.

Dr. Mrs. Wiafe Addai, who doubles as the Chief Executive Officer of the Peace and Love Hospitals, disclosed that there is “hope” that the future will be brighter than what prevails currently, regarding breast cancer.

She emphasised the importance of relaying the message to the youth so they grow with the knowledge that breast cancer is not caused by witchcraft.

The BCI Founder indicated that the gathering was with one mission – to fight breast cancer – a fight that could be won.

According to her, through BCI’s awareness programmes and outreaches a lot of awareness has been raised and that what was left to be done was the change of mentality of the people, especially women, that breast cancer was not caused by witchcraft.

She cautioned that women should not spend all their time at prayer camps, only to come to the hospital when it’s too late, urging women to let their pastors pray for them, whiles they seek treatment at the hospital.

Touching on the theme, the Founder urged all and sundry to bring their arsenals on board to fight the battle together as well as to save the lives of women especially younger ones, who die “needlessly and prematurely” from breast cancer, which was treatable and curable.

Dr. Mrs. Wiafe Addai emphasised that no woman should die from breast cancer because she was poor and that men should also disabuse their minds that breast cancer was a preserve of women.

Dr. Mrs. Wiafe Addai noted that in Ghana more than 2300 women diagnosed with breast cancer every year die from it, saying it is serious and unacceptable for the fact  that it is higher than the number of people who died from COVID-19 within two years.

May Edochie has opened up on how she first met her estranged husband, Nollywood actor Yul Edochie.

Speaking during a recent lifestyle podcast, May shared that their paths crossed long before fame and marriage.

The mother of three revealed that their first meeting was at a General Certificate Examination, GCE, centre during her early university days.

According to her, she had just moved from Lagos to pursue a degree at Enugu State University when she met Yul, who was then studying at the University of Port Harcourt, UNIPORT.

“Way back in school when I went to the East for my university, I’m a bookworm. It’s always been about books for me. We didn’t meet at a party or any glamorous settings, we met at a GCE centre,” she said.

Reflecting on that period, May described herself as an academically driven young woman. Credit: dailypost.ng

Richie Mensah becomes voting member of Grammy Recording Academy

Ghanaian music executive Richie Mensah has been appointed a voting member of the Recording Academy, organisers of the Grammy Awards.

The accomplished music producer, singer, songwriter and Chief Executive Officer of Lynx Group of Companies announced the news by sharing an artwork from the Recording Academy confirming his appointment.

In a Facebook post, Richie captioned the artwork, “thank you Recording Academy for the honour.”

His appointment has been met with excitement among Ghanaians, who view it as a significant milestone for the country’s music industry. While a few Ghanaians are already members of the Academy but have not made it public, many believe Richie’s inclusion will further open doors for local talents.

Some social media users have also expressed hope that his appointment will positively impact the development of Ghana’s music industry.

Richie Mensah has produced a lot of superstars from his stables apart from his personal music projects. His Lynx Entertainment record label has spawned talents such as Kuami Eugene, KiDi, Asem, Eazzy, MzVee, DopeNation, Zigi, OJ Blaq (deceased), among others.

A few weeks ago, Lady Dentaa Amoateng, consultant to the Recording Academy’s CEO Harvey Mason Jr., said on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM that Ghana’s chances at the Grammys would remain slim until more Ghanaians joined the Academy.

When asked about non-Africans being eligible for the African Music Performance category, she said the best solution was to increase African representation within the Academy.

“That is why we need Africans to be able to vote. If you are on the Board, you have voting rights. There are meetings that they go through the process, so if there are more of us on that platform, then you won’t get non-Africans infusing in that category too much. So I think it is really important,” she told hosts Kwame Dadzie and Doreen Avio.

Dentaa added that she would embark on a campaign to ensure more Ghanaians are invited to join the Academy. The Recording Academy has over 16,000 members, with more than 13,000 voting members.

Voting members include recording artists, songwriters, composers, producers, engineers, mixers, mastering engineers, instrumentalists and arrangers.

There are also professional members such as artist managers, publicists, label executives, music publishers, agents, entertainment lawyers, business managers and live event producers.

The final group, GRAMMY U, consists of college students studying music or related fields who aspire to work in the industry. The programme provides mentorship and networking opportunities.

Nabil Alhassan clarifies Gyakie’s absence at Rapperholic Homecoming concert

Songstress Gyakie was billed to perform at Sarkodie’s Rapperholic Homecoming concert held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on 27th September 2025, but she could not mount the stage.

Explaining the situation on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z with Kwame Dadzie, the event organiser Nabil Alhassan said the weather affected the programme’s flow and performance schedule.

“Gyakie was supposed to perform before Sarkodie would come on. She was there but because of the rain. People were trying to find spaces to be before. When she came she went through hell before entering the stadium. Because I was there when she was entered the stadium,” he explained.

Nabil added that the change in plan became necessary after Sarkodie decided to proceed with his performance in spite of the hiccup.

“It would have been easier if Sarkodie had a record with her, because Sarkodie got tired and wanted to now start the show because everybody was looking forward to him. So we didn’t have time to tell who should perform at a particular time,” he said.

According to Nabil, Sarkodie began his set with songs that featured other artistes present at the event, which made it difficult to slot Gyakie in since the two have not yet collaborated.

“He doesn’t have any song with Gyakie so there was no window for us to place Gyakie. So that was what happened. If she has a record with Gyakie it would have been easier to slot her in,” he added.

The Rapperholic Homecoming concert, part of Sarkodie’s 2025 Rapperholic series, featured a star-studded line-up including Shatta Wale, Obrafuor, Reggie Rockstone, Kweku Smoke, Medikal and several others. Despite the rain causing logistical challenges, thousands of fans filled the stadium to witness one of the most anticipated shows in Ghana’s music calendar.

Australian police search for motive in rare mass shooting in Sydney

A man fired up to 50 bullets into a street in Sydney, Australia

A 60-year-old man is in custody in Australia after he allegedly shot up to 50 bullets into a busy Sydney street, wounding one person critically, according to police.

Detectives were set to interview the suspect on Monday, as they seek a motive for the mass shooting incident, which is a rare occurrence in Australia.

The Sunday night shooting caused panic in the Sydney suburb of Croydon Park, as the suspect fired a .30-calibre rifle at random from his apartment window at passing vehicles. Police stormed the unit and apprehended him to bring the assault to an end.

“It is incredible that nobody died,” Stephen Parry, acting New South Wales police superintendent, told a news conference.

One of the victims, a man in his 50s, was shot in the neck and chest. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition, where he underwent emergency surgery, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

Fourteen others were treated at the scene for shock or minor injuries, including from glass from shattered car windows, emergency services said.

The suspect was also taken to hospital with injuries sustained during his arrest, but has since been taken to a police station, the ABC reported.

The suspect has no links to organised crime or terror organisations, according to Parry.

“No mental health history” is known to police, and there were “very few” prior interactions with authorities, the police official added.

Six patients killed in Indian hospital ICU fire

Indian hospital ICU fire victims

Six critically ill patients have been killed in a fire that broke out at an intensive care unit (ICU) of a hospital in the western Indian city of Jaipur.

The fire, suspected to be caused by a short circuit, started late on Sunday night in the storage area of the ICU of the Sawai Man Singh Hospital. Eleven patients were in the ICU at the time.

The victims include two women and four men. Relatives of the victims have accused staff of negligence, which hospital authorities have denied.

The government of Rajasthan state, of which Jaipur is the capital, has announced an investigation into the incident.

“Every possible step is being taken to ensure patient safety, treatment, and care for those affected, and the situation is being continuously monitored,” the state’s Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma said on Sunday.

The Sawai Man Singh hospital, run by the state government, is one of the largest in Rajasthan and treats thousands of patients every day.

The fire broke out just before midnight in the trauma centre of the hospital and soon spread through the building.

Fourteen patients were evacuated from a nearby ICU ward as thick plumes of smoke engulfed the room.

Firefighters broke open windows and battled the blaze for nearly two hours before bringing it under control, news agency PTI reported.

Many families have accused the hospital staff of negligence.

“We noticed smoke and immediately informed the staff, but they did not pay any heed. When the fire broke out, they were the first to run,” one of them told PTI.

Judge blocks Trump from sending troops from California to Portland

Judge blocks sending troops to Portland

A US federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from deploying National Guard troops from Texas and California to Portland, Oregon.

The decision late on Sunday comes after the same court denied Trump’s attempt to deploy Oregon’s own National Guard members to Portland.

Portland is the latest Democratic-led city targeted as part of the president’s attempt to address what he says is out-of-control crime, amid protests over his administration’s immigration enforcement.

Trump has also authorised the deployment of National Guard troops from other states to Chicago, Illinois.

The ruling on Sunday from US District Judge Karin Immergut came shortly after the Pentagon confirmed 200 members of the California National Guard had been reassigned to Portland to “support US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal personnel performing official duties”.

California and Oregon had sought a temporary restraining order against the deployment.

Judge Immergut, who was appointed by Trump, said there was no evidence that recent protests in the city made the presence of federalised National Guard troops necessary.

During Sunday’s emergency hearing, she pressed lawyers from the federal government on how the deployment of troops from other states was not simply a way to circumvent her earlier decision denying the deployment of Oregon’s National Guard.

In that decision, she said the use of the military to quell unrest without Oregon’s consent risked the sovereignty of that state and others, and inflamed tensions in the city of Portland.

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu resigns after less than a month

France Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu

France’s Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has resigned, less than a day after his cabinet was unveiled.

“The conditions were not fulfilled for me to carry on as prime minister,” Lecornu said on Monday morning, and criticised the unwillingness by political parties to reach compromises.

The Elysée palace made the announcement after Lecornu met President Emmanuel Macron for an hour on Monday morning.

The shock move comes only 26 days after Lecornu was appointed prime minister following the collapse of the previous government of François Bayrou.

Parties across the board in the National Assembly had fiercely criticised the composition of Lecornu’s cabinet, which was largely unchanged from Bayrou’s, and threatened to vote it down.

Several parties are clamouring for early elections and some are calling for Macron to go – although he has always said he will not stand down before his term ends in 2027.

“The only wise thing to do now is to hold elections,” said Marine Le Pen of the hard-right National Rally (RN).

“The joke’s gone on long enough. French people are fed up. Macron has put the country in an extremely difficult position,” she added.

The decision on how to proceed now rests with Macron, who must surely be asking himself how long this political charade can be allowed to go on.

He has three options. He can appoint another prime minister. He can once again dissolve the National Assembly. Or he can resign himself.

The last is the least likely, while the first would be his natural choice.
