WaterAid launches climate resilient WASH Financing Mechanism in U/E

0

WaterAid Ghana, in collaboration with the Water Resources Commission and partners, has launched the Climate Resilient Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Financing Mechanism (CRWFM) in the Upper East Region.

The CRWFM, established under the Securing Water Access Project (SWAP) is an innovative initiative focused on addressing climate-related WASH vulnerabilities by decentralising funding and empowering local actors to drive sustainable solutions.

It aims strengthening climate resilience and improving access to WASH services in climate-vulnerable districts in the region.

Mr Richard Agbo Ntibrey, the Programme Manager for WASH and Climate at WaterAid Ghana, presenting on the CRWFM concept at the launch in Bolgatanga, explained that the mechanism would catalyse local climate action while ensuring inclusiveness.

“The driving force should be the community and this mechanism accelerates local responses to climate challenges, ensuring solutions are grassroots, inclusive and tailored to local adaptation needs,” he said.

He said the initiative placed emphasis on involving marginalised groups, including women, persons with disabilities, Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs), Water and Sanitation Management Teams (WSMTs) and other community-based actors.

“By linking financial support directly to WASH, the scheme prioritises equity-driven and climate-resilient interventions,” he added.

Ing. Ntibrey emphasised that priority projects will include the development and rehabilitation of climate-resilient water infrastructure, adoption of water conservation technologies, promotion of nature-based solutions and support for climate-adaptive livelihoods.

To mark the launch, WaterAid presented GH¢400,000 as seed funding, with GH¢17,700 disbursed to the Dasabiligo WASH Committee as the first beneficiary group, having had their community plan for the rehabilitation of its dam approved.

Dr Joachim Ayiiwe Abungba, the Chairman of the White Volta Basin Watershed Fund Steering Committee, described the initiative as “one of the happiest days” for the Basin.

The Basin was established in September 2024 to strengthen governance and improve water resources management across the entire White Volta Basin.

“Since its establishment, we have been engaging stakeholders, agencies and civil society organisations to contribute to making the fund operational. And today, we are seeing part of that operationalisation come to life,” Dr Abunga said.

He emphasised: “It is open to the entire White Volta Basin, stretching to the Northern and North East Regions. Of course, districts must go through the qualification process to access it, but the fund remains open to all within the Basin.”

Dr Abunga assured that the Steering Committee and the Water Resources Commission would continue to support the process to ensure that communities and partner institutions fully benefited from the initiative.

Mrs Amaka Godfrey, the Executive Director for International Programmes at WaterAid, lauded the Dasabiligo WASH Committee for championing the initiative.

“This initiative is laudable. It’s a story I can take to the global platform to show how community-driven initiatives like this work.

“What excites me most is that this came from the community, not from WaterAid or our partners, but from the people themselves who identified how best to protect their water resources,” she said.

Mr Donatus Atanga Akamugri, the Upper East Regional Minister, lauded the initiative and described it as “a bold step in our collective pursuit of sustainable development, environmental protection, and the well-being of our people.”

He stressed that the Upper East Region was already experiencing the harsh impacts of climate change, with frequent droughts, erratic rainfall, and floods disrupting water supply and sanitation systems, and pledged the full support of the Regional Coordinating Council to provide oversight and technical assistance.

The governance framework for the CRWFM comprises an advisory board and a technical committee with representation from NGOs, government agencies and the private sector to ensure transparency, innovation and alignment with national plans such as Ghana’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs).

Anti-Corruption Crusader Calls for Special Court to Fast-Track Corruption Cases

0
Edem Senanu, Chairperson - AUABC

Mr. Edem Senanu, Chairperson of the African Union Advisory Board Against Corruption (AUABC), has advocated for the establishment of a special court to expedite the prosecution of corruption-related cases.

According to him, the current judicial system is slow in handling corruption cases, which can take up to seven years to resolve.

Mr. Senanu believes that a specialized court would help to strengthen the fight against corruption by providing a dedicated platform for corruption cases.

He made the call at the Regional Stakeholders Engagement on the formulation of the National Ethics and Anti-corruption Action Plan (NEACA 2026-3030) in Kumasi.

He noted that while there have been efforts to combat corruption, there are weaknesses in the system, particularly in terms of collaboration between agencies and the judiciary’s understanding of corruption cases.

Mr. Senanu emphasized the importance of building public capacity to condemn and fight corruption, making it a high-risk, low-gain activity.

According to him, we need specialized anti-corruption courts and trained lawyers to handle and fast-track corruption cases, because the current system is slow, and it takes years to resolve cases.

Mr. Degraft Johnson, from the office of the Chief of Staff at the Presidency, explained that Corruption remained a persistent challenge despite implementation of anti-corruption programmes.

He indicated that the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) scores have stagnated or declined, indicating little progress in public trust. He re-affirmed that the establishment of a special court would help to address the persistent challenge of corruption in Ghana and also help to build public trust and confidence in the system, promoting a culture of transparency and accountability.

He disclosed that the National Anti-corruption Action Plan (NACAP 2015-2024) concluded its implementation Cycle in the previous year.

Mr. Degraft Johnson reiterated that in line with the Government of Ghana’s continued commitment to promoting integrity and combating corruption, a new framework, the National Ethics and Anti-corruption Action Plan (NEACAP 2026-2030) is currently being developed.

What Is Breast Self-Exam?

0
Breast

Breast Self-Exam is a way for you to check your breasts for changes, such as lumps or thickenings. You’ll look at and feel both breasts. If you notice anything unusual, tell your doctor right away. In many cases, those changes aren’t cancer, but you need to see your doctor to find out.

Doctors may recommend that people with a strong family history of breast cancer do monthly self-exams starting at age 20. You can continue for the rest of your life, including during menopause and pregnancy.

What Should I Look for in a Breast Self-Exam?

If you get regular periods, the best time to do a breast self-exam is after your period. Your breasts are less likely to be swollen, lumpy, or tender at that time.

If you don’t get a period or have irregular ones, pick a day of the month that you’re unlikely to forget and do it then. It should only take you a few minutes.

Look for:

  • Any changes in your breasts, including their look, feel, or size
  • Changes in how your nipples look or feel
  • Dimpling or puckering on the breast skin
  • Hard or thick lumps underneath the breast skin or deep within the tissue
  • Pain in one breast or one spot
  • Fluids or discharge from a nipple
  • Nipple or other parts of your breast pulling inward
  • Rashes in or around your breast
  • Swelling in one or both breasts
  • Warmth, redness, or dark spots on one or both breasts

How Do I Do a Breast Self-Exam?

The techniques for a self-exam are similar for everyone. If you choose to do one, follow these steps:

In the mirror:

  1. Stand undressed from the waistup in front of a large mirror in a well-lit room. Look at your breasts. If they aren’t equal in size or shape, that’s OK! Most aren’t. With your arms relaxed by your sides, look for any changes in size, shape, or position, or any skin changes. Look for any puckering, dimpling, sores, or discoloration.
  2. Check your nipples and look for any sores, peeling, or change in their direction.
  3. Place your hands on your hips and press down firmly to tighten the chest muscles beneath your breasts. Turn from side to side so you can look at the outer part of your breasts.
  4. Then bend forward toward the mirror. Roll your shoulders and elbows forward to tighten your chest muscles. Your breasts will fall forward. Look for any changes in their shape or contour.
  5. Now, clasp your hands behind your head and press your hands forward. Again, turn from side to side to inspect your breasts’ outer portions. Remember to look at the border underneath them. You may need to lift your breast with your hand to see it.
  6. Check your nipples for discharge fluid. Place your thumb and forefinger on the tissue surrounding the nipple and pull outward toward the end of the nipple. Look for any discharge. Repeat on your other breast.

In the shower:

  1. Feel for changes in the breast. It helps to have your hands slippery with soap and water, especially if you don’t have much breast tissue. Check for any lumps or thickening in your underarm area. Place your left hand on your hip and reach with your right hand to feel in the left armpit. Repeat on the other side.
  2. Check both sides for lumps or thickenings above and below your collarbone.
  3. With hands soapy, raise one arm behind your head to spread out the breast tissue. Use the flat part of your fingers from the other hand to press gently into the breast. Follow an up-and-down pattern, moving from bra line to collarbone. Continue the pattern until you have covered the entire breast. Repeat on the other side.

Lying down:

  1. Lie down and place a small pillow or folded towel under your right shoulder. Put your right hand behind your head. Place your left hand on the upper portion of your right breast with fingers together and flat. Body lotion may help to make this easier.
  2. Think of your breast as a face on a clock. Start at 12 o’clock and move toward 1 o’clock in small circular motions. Continue around the entire circle until you reach 12 o’clock again. Keep your fingers flat and in constant contact with your breast. When the circle is complete, move in 1 inch toward the nipple and complete another circle around the clock. Continue in this pattern until you’ve felt the entire breast. Make sure to feel the upper outer areas that extend into your armpit.
  3. Place your fingers flat and directly on top of your nipple. Feel beneath the nipple for any changes. Gently press your nipple inward. It should move easily.
  4. Repeat these steps on your other breast. Don’t forget to check the upper, outer area of the breast, nearest to the armpit.

Sheffield Utd boss Wilder charged after kicking ball at fan

Chris Wilder, Sheffield United manager

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association.

The 58-year-old was sent off after the half-time whistle in the home defeat by Southampton for kicking the ball into the stand and hitting a fan.

Wilder previously told BBC Radio Sheffield that he would appeal against any ban he received for the incident.

He has until Wednesday, 8 October to respond to the charge.

Speaking last week Wilder said: “If I approached the referee at half-time and had a right pop at him, if I picked the ball out my hands and booted it at him or at the fourth official, then I would expect the necessary punishment and I won’t appeal.

“But I will appeal because, as you’ve seen, I’ve nonchalantly knocked it back – it’s got a bit of a flier on it.

“I’ve gone straight into the stand, I’ve apologised to the guy, everything’s all sorted and I’ve turned around and got a red card put in my face.”

The Blades are bottom of the Championship after losing eight of their opening nine league games.

Coventry City striker Brandon Thomas-Asante

Coventry City striker Brandon Thomas-Asante has earned a late call-up to the Ghana national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against the Central African Republic and Comoros.

The 26-year-old forward replaces Inaki Williams, who has been ruled out after sustaining an injury during Athletic Bilbao’s La Liga clash with Mallorca on Saturday.

Thomas-Asante has been in fine form this season, scoring five goals and providing three assists in nine Championship appearances. He underlined his scoring touch over the weekend with a brace for Coventry City, prompting Otto Addo to hand him a spot in the squad.

Williams, 31, was originally named in Addo’s 24-man list for the crucial double-header but will now miss both fixtures.

The Black Stars are currently in Casablanca, Morocco, preparing for their first encounter against the Central African Republic on Wednesday, October 8, 2025. They will then return home to face Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 12.

Ghana sit atop Group I with 19 points and are seeking to secure qualification for their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance.

Kudus’ goal is a “breath of fresh air” -Wayne Rooney

0
Mohammed Kudus

Wayne Rooney believes Tottenham Hotspurs will be enjoying more from Mohammed Kudus after the Ghanaian midfielder opening his goal-scoring account for the club since his summer move against Leeds United on Saturday.

Kudus netted the match-winner as Spurs continued their fine start to the campaign with an important win on the road.

While Spurs have turned thing around following a miserable campaign last season, Kudus has been pivotal for Thomas Frank’s men as he registered his fourth assist – the most in the Premier League – at Elland Road.

Rooney, a Manchester United and England legend, insists Kudus has had the most impact at Spurs and he is gradually becoming an influential figure for the Europa League winners.

“I think he has been a breath of fresh air. I think if you look at the stats from today’s game he is first in everything. Duels won, successful dribbles, shots, touches in opposition box. He has real impact for Tottenham this season.

“He has got four assists this season, joint first in the Premier League and he has by far had the most successful dribbles in the league. All that was missing was the goal and I think that goal today will push him to the next level and he has been a real top turner,” he told BBC Sport.

The £55m player has left England for Morocco ahead of Ghana’s decisive World Cup qualifier against the Central African Republic on October 8.

Pep Guardiola celebrates impressive new Premier League record -‘It’s an honour’

0
Pep Guardiola, Man

Pep Guardiola reached another milestone in his career upon seeing Manchester City defeat Brentford 1-0 in the Premier League. With the result, the Spanish manager broke a record by achieving 250 victories in the competition.

Guardiola reached the feat with 349 matches played in the top flight of the English Championship, becoming the manager who achieved the feat most quickly. He surpassed the efficiency record of Sir Alex Ferguson, legendary name of Manchester United, with 55 matches fewer.

The historic Scottish manager obtained 250 victories in his 404th match. Arsene Wenger only celebrated the feat after 423 matches.

“It is an honour to be alongside Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger. I will invite them for a good dinner. It is a pleasure to be part of this in Premier League history, very happy. Now let us go for another 250,” declared Guardiola.

Guardiola is in his tenth season in charge of the Citizens. The Spaniard took over the Etihad Stadium team in 2016 and, since then, the Manchester club have had their greatest period of success in English football.

From 2016 to the present, City have won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups and three Community Shields.

Furthermore, Pep brought to the blue side of the city of Manchester three international trophies, the most important being, of course, the Champions League, a competition he won in the 2022-23 season, being the club’s first title.

And for those who think this was the only personal record broken by Guardiola this season, they are mistaken. The Spaniard became the manager with most matches in Club World Cup history in July 2025.

The feat was achieved after Manchester City’s rout of Al-Ain, when he reached his 10th match in the competition, which makes him the manager with most games played in the tournament, alongside fellow Spaniard Ramon Tribulietx.

Bawumia Takes Control Of Ashanti, Central & Eastern Regions

0
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

As the race for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer slot ahead of the 2028 general elections heats up, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign continues to gain strong traction across the country.

His recent regional tours of the Ashanti, Eastern, Central and Greater Accra Regions have demonstrated not only his popularity within the party, but also a growing consensus among current and former party executives that he remains the best candidate to lead the NPP into the next national polls.

Everywhere he has gone, the message has been clear from the grassroots to senior party leadership that Dr. Bawumia’s vision, humility and unifying spirit make him the right man to carry the NPP’s flag once again.

The support he has received across the four regions has been described as a “lockdown,” reflecting the overwhelming enthusiasm and commitment of party faithful rallying behind his bid.

Dr. Bawumia, who has embarked on an extensive campaign tour to interact directly with delegates, has maintained a central theme throughout his engagements: a decent, respectful campaign that upholds party unity above all else.

He has consistently reminded party members that the true strength of the NPP lies in their solidarity, stressing that “we must not tear ourselves apart during internal contests if we want to win together in 2028.”

Ashanti Region

The Ashanti Region, long regarded as the NPP’s political stronghold, offered Dr.Bawumia a rousing welcome during his three-day campaign tour from September 10 to 12, 2025. At every stop from Adansi Akrofuom and Bekwai to Mampong and Offinso the atmosphere was charged with energy and unity. Delegates and Executives chanted slogans such as “No change!” and “Bawumia, no Challenger!”

Both current and former executives, including Members of Parliament, former government appointees, and grassroots organisers, openly endorsed his candidacy. They praised his loyalty to the party, innovative ideas, and efforts to modernize NPP operations.

Party stalwarts noted that his leadership has not only strengthened the party’s base, but also expanded its appeal beyond traditional support zones.

Executives described him as a “visionary leader” and “problem solver,” adding that his humility and intellect have made him relatable to both the elite and ordinary citizens. They were unanimous in their view that Dr. Bawumia offers the NPP its best chance to return to power in 2028.

Eastern Region

Dr. Bawumia’s two-day visit to the Eastern Region from September 24 to 25, 2025, further underscored his commitment to an inclusive and listening style of leadership. Regional and constituency executives lauded him for his approachability and authenticity, describing his meetings as “genuine engagements, not political shows.”

“He listens, he asks questions, and he makes everyone feel included. You can feel his genuine concern for both the people and the party,” one senior executive said.

Fifteen out of the region’s 23 NPP Members of Parliament, including prominent figures like Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Sammi Awuku and Frank Annoh-Dompreh publicly declared their support for Dr. Bawumia.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Achiase MP Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo said: “We are clear in our minds that Dr. Bawumia is the best candidate to lead us to victory in 2028.”

The MPs emphasised his proven record as Vice President, his humility and his forward-looking policies.

They also cautioned that changing the party’s 2024 flagbearer would only derail the NPP’s progress, insisting that “Bawumia was right on many of the ideas that were once dismissed.”

Central Region

The Central Region, where Dr. Bawumia met party leaders from September 29 to October 2, 2025, also reaffirmed its support for his flagbearership. Both current and former regional and constituency executives, as well as former appointees, pledged to mobilize support and strengthen local structures in his favour.

They praised Dr. Bawumia for his accessibility and inclusiveness, describing his campaign as one that promotes unity and shared purpose. “He inspires confidence and bridges the generational divide,” one executive said.

“He respects older members while empowering the youth to take part in building the party’s future.”

The executives emphasized that many of Dr. Bawumia’s policy initiatives, though initially questioned, are now yielding visible results. They argued that his foresight and consistency have proven him to be a strategic thinker whose leadership would secure the party’s future and sustain national progress.

Greater Accra Region

Dr. Bawumia’s tour of the Greater Accra Region, which ran from October 1 to 5, 2025, sealed what many within the NPP are calling “unstoppable momentum.”

His meetings with party executives, former appointees, and MPs across constituencies such as Trobu, Amasaman, Anyaa Sowutuom and Dome Kwabenya were met with overwhelming excitement.

Former and current executives in the region declared their full commitment to his campaign, stressing that he remains the “most winnable candidate” for the 2028 elections.

They commended his unifying leadership, humility, and track record as Ghana’s most visible and impactful Vice President.

Adding to the wave of endorsements, Trobu MP Gloria Owusu described Dr.Bawumia as the “people’s choice,” recounting an encounter with market women at Dome Market who insisted that he must lead the party in 2028.

“They told me clearly that they do not want a leader who insults or divides. They want someone decent, humble and respectful — that is Dr. Bawumia,” she said.

Kofi Adams Rallies Support For Black Stars

0
Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams

As the race to qualify for the upcoming international football tournament intensifies, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has issued a heartfelt goodwill message to the Black Stars, urging Ghanaians to stand united in support of the national team during this crucial period.

In a statement released in Accra over the weekend, Adams expressed unwavering confidence in the players’ strength and resilience for the upcoming matches.  “Our Black Stars have shown incredible determination and skill throughout this campaign,” he said and added, “I am optimistic about their ability to secure qualification and bring glory to Ghana. With your support through prayers, cheers, and positive thoughts, we can lift their spirits and motivate them to succeed.”

Ghana currently sits comfortably in the qualification standings with 19 points, positioning them favorably ahead of key upcoming fixtures. The final group matches include a pivotal showdown between Madagascar and Comoros, each fighting fiercely for the top spot and at least a second-place finish that could see them challenge Ghana for qualification.

The scenario remains promising for Ghana’s qualification prospects. If Madagascar beats Comoros, the latter will be out of contention for the top spot, and Ghana would only need a draw against the Central African Republic (CAR) in their next match to advance. Conversely, a victory for Comoros over Madagascar would mean Ghana’s qualification is secured with a win against CAR. Even in a more challenging scenario if Madagascar wins and Ghana also triumphs, the team’s chances of qualification are still high, considering their current points and remaining fixtures.

The upcoming match between Madagascar and Comoros is being viewed as a potential turning point. Only one of these teams can challenge Ghana’s top position, and if Madagascar wins, they will face Mali in their next fixture an encounter that may be tough, further favoring Ghana’s path to qualification.

Kofi Adams emphasized the importance of national unity and unwavering support. “Our journey to the tournament is within reach. With faith, collective effort and the relentless spirit of our Black Stars, I believe they will rise to the occasion and bring honor to Ghana.”

The nation’s fans are encouraged to continue rallying behind the team, praying for their success, and maintaining confidence that Ghana’s Black Stars will deliver the results that Ghanaians hope for.

As the countdown to match days 9 and 10 continues, all eyes are on the Black Stars, with the hope that their hard work and determination will lead to victory and national pride.

Go Black Stars! Ghana is behind you all the way!
