US military kills two suspected narco-terrorists in strike on drug-trafficking vessel in the Pacific

0
US military

The U.S. military carried out a lethal strike on a suspected drug-trafficking vessel in the Eastern Pacific on Friday, killing two suspected narco-terrorists, according to U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM).

“On April 24, at the direction of #SOUTHCOM commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan, Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by Designated Terrorist Organizations,” SOUTHCOM said in a post on X. No U.S. military forces were harmed.

SOUTHCOM did not immediately provide additional details about the identities of those killed or the specific groups involved.

The U.S. military has carried out numerous strikes in recent months on suspected drug-smuggling vessels as part of a broader campaign to dismantle cartel-linked trafficking operations.

The strike comes less than a week after SOUTHCOM said it conducted a similar operation in the Caribbean, killing three suspected narco-terrorists.

“Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations,” the post continued. “Two male narco-terrorists were killed during this action.”

SOUTHCOM is responsible for military operations in Central and South America and the Caribbean, including counter-narcotics missions aimed at disrupting drug trafficking networks that threaten U.S. interests.

The Eastern Pacific remains a key corridor for narcotics trafficking, with cartels often using small, fast-moving vessels to transport drugs toward the U.S. and Central America.

World leaders condemn ‘unacceptable’ violence after armed attack disrupts WH Correspondents’ Dinner

0
President Donald Trump

World leaders across the globe swiftly condemned political violence and expressed relief that President Donald Trump was unharmed after a chaotic armed attack Saturday night disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, D.C.

Their responses poured in on X after a man armed with guns and knives stormed the lobby of the Washington Hilton and charged toward the ballroom, where Trump, lawmakers, journalists and foreign dignitaries were gathered, prompting Secret Service agents to open fire and guests to dive under tables.

The suspect — later identified as 31-year-old Cole Allen of Torrance, California — was taken into custody, and Trump was rushed offstage unharmed.

Officials said the suspect was a guest at the Washington Hilton, where the dinner was being held, and was taken into custody at the scene. He is expected to appear in court on Monday.

In their reactions, world leaders emphasized both solidarity with the United States and concern over rising political violence.

French President Emmanuel Macron called the incident “unacceptable,” writing that “violence has no place in a democracy” while expressing “full support” for Trump.

Italian Prime Minister GiorgiaMeloni echoed that sentiment, warning against political extremism.

“No political hatred can find space in our democracies,” she said, adding that democratic nations must not allow “fanaticism to poison the places of free debate and information.”

Indian Prime Minister NarendraModi said he was “relieved” Trump, the first lady and Vice President JD Vance were safe, stressing that violence “must be unequivocally condemned.”

What Are Braces?

0
Braces

Braces are dental tools, sometimes called appliances, that help correct problems with your teeth, like crowding, crooked teeth, or teeth that are not aligned. Many people get braces when they’re teenagers, but adults get them too. As you wear them, braces slowly straighten and align your teeth until your bite is corrected.

Getting braces

Some general dentists work with braces, but most likely, your treatment with braces will be overseen by an orthodontist, a type of dentist who specializes in straightening teeth, correcting bites that aren’t aligned, and addressing jaw problems. An orthodontist has 2 to 3 years of advanced orthodontic education and training beyond dental school.

The dentist or orthodontist you choose will ask questions about your health, do a clinical exam, take a digital scan of your teeth, take photos of your face and teeth, and order X-rays of your mouth and head. They’ll come up with a treatment plan based on this information.

Types of Braces

Braces are the most popular way to straighten teeth and correct misaligned bites in children. They don’t only come in the shiny metal form of years past. Many more options are now available.

Your dentist or orthodontist will prescribe braces based on your needs and your preferences. Your braces may consist of bands, wires, and other fixed or removable corrective tools, or appliances. No one method works for everyone.

Metal/traditional braces

Traditional braces are made of metal. They include brackets that are attached to the front of your teeth or bands that fit around each tooth, as well as flexible wires, or archwires, that hold the brackets or bands together. Some braces also include rubber bands or metal ties that link the brackets to the wire. These bands create pressure to help straighten and align your teeth. Your orthodontist may have you wear a device called headgear at night. It provides added pressure to help straighten your teeth.

Ceramic braces. Also called clear braces, these work just like metal braces, but their color matches your teeth. That makes them less noticeable (but not invisible). They’re not as durable as metal braces, which makes them easier to break, but they provide just as much correction.

Lingual braces

The brackets on these braces attach to the backs of your teeth, facing your tongue. That keeps them out of sight as they do their job.

Self-litigating braces

Made from either metal or ceramic, these braces cause less friction because they have clips built into the brackets to hold the wire. Self-litigating braces usually allow you more time between appointments. Easier to clean and harder to spot, they may require less time than other braces to correct your teeth.

Mini braces

These are about 30% smaller than traditional braces, but they are made of stronger stainless steel. They’re less noticeable, easier to keep clean, and work just as well as larger braces.

Braces vs. Invisalign

Invisalign is the brand name of a popular alternative to braces called clear aligners. While both braces and clear aligners help straighten your teeth, they have significant differences.

Clear aligners are plastic models of your teeth. When you wear them, they apply mild pressure that gradually repositions your teeth. Tooth-colored attachments can help hold your aligners in place if necessary. Unlike braces, which remain fixed to your teeth at all times, clear aligners like Invisalign can be removed easily. In fact, you will take them out to eat as well as to brush and floss. It’s recommended that you wear them at least 22 hours per day. Clear aligners are much less noticeable than traditional braces. One potential drawback compared to braces: You can lose or damage your clear aligners when you remove them. You also have to avoid drinking acidic and/or sugary drinks, like sodas and sports drinks, while wearing clear aligners. If such liquids get in your aligners, they can stain your teeth and cause tooth decay.

How Do Braces Work?

Braces put pressure on your teeth over a period of time to slowly move them in a specific direction. This pressure slowly moves your teeth into a better alignment. The bone under them changes shape, too.

Braces are made up of many parts, including:

Brackets

Brackets are small squares that fit on the front or back of each tooth, depending on the type of braces you and your orthodontist select. The dentist attaches them with a special bonding agent or with orthodontic bands. Brackets act like handles, holding the archwires that move your teeth. Your brackets will be made of stainless steel or tooth-colored ceramic or plastic.

How Long Will I Have to Wear Braces?

Expect to wear your braces for about 2 years, but keep in mind that this varies from person to person. You could have yours for less than a year or up to 3 years. The time it takes for your braces to fix your problem depends on a few things, including:

  • How severe your problem is
  • The amount of space in your jaw
  • Your overall oral health
  • How closely you follow your orthodontist’s instructions

   God Is Watching

0
Dr. Joyce Rosalind Aryee, Executive Director, Salt and Light Ministries

“Where could I go from Your Spirit?  Or where could I flee from your presence?  If I ascend up into Heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol (the place of the dead), behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there shall Your hand lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me.” – Ps. 139:7-10 (Amplified Version)

God is Everywhere

The Lord is watching everywhere and keeps His eye on both the evil and the good – Prov. 15:3 (Living Bible).  God is present everywhere and that is why He is called Omnipotent.  Because of this He sees everything, and we ourselves can never be lost to His Spirits.  On the one hand, this is good news because it means that those who have a close relationship with God have the assurance that no matter what we do, no matter where we go, we can never be far from God’s comforting presence as we read in Romans 8:35-39.  It also means that we ourselves can never hide from God.  Nor can we hide any of our actions from Him – He even knows our thoughts – Psalm 44:21.

The knowledge that God is Omnipotent – present everywhere should make us want to do what is right at all times.  The following article story, which I read in a Christian newspaper gives much food for thought.

The Two-way Mirror

I saw the mirror at the back of the drug store but paid little attention to it.  I made my purchase and left.   Later, the son of the Pharmacist, a personal acquaintance of mine, told me about a woman who had a prescription filled in the same drug store.  While she waited, the druggist went into his little back room to prepare the medication.

The woman glanced in the mirror and touched up her hair.  Then she wandered over to the perfume counter.  Being alone and seeing her favourite perfume, she slipped a bottle into her purse.  Few minutes later the pharmacist laid the filled prescription on the counter and named a price.  The woman asked why it was so expensive.  The druggist explained the price of the prescription and added the price of the perfume: “For the bottle you have in your purse.”

Surprised, the woman said: “Oh, I forgot about that!”  That mirror was a two-way one, and the Pharmacist had been watching the woman’s every move.

God is always present, always watching.  He is Omniscient.  He doesn’t need a two-way mirror to know what we are doing.

The Unseen Stealing

A fortune can be made from cheating, but there is a curse that goes with it – Prov. 20:21 (LIVING).  It is quite easy to say: “Well, I wouldn’t take anything that doesn’t belong to me”, but there are other ways of stealing.  Some people think themselves to be upright because they do not break the law.  Yet if they take a little money in a shady deal or slightly misrepresent a product, their character is no better than that of the outright thief.

Concerning any questionable business deal, some businessmen have been known to say: “Well, business is business.”  Everybody does it!  No everybody does it though but the excuse satisfies the unconscionable people.  However, God, who is watching, even though it may be undetected by the customer, sees every shady deal.

There are those who deny it, but gambling may be another way of stealing.  The gambler will tell you it’s his business what he does with his money.  But that statement is questionable if his wife and children have nothing to eat and the rent goes unpaid.

Christians: the World’s Bible

Christians ought to pay all their bills.  Many worldly people judge Christ and His Church by the way professing Christians pay their bills.  If a man is a Christian and his grocer is not, the grocer may feel there is nothing to Christianity when the Christian runs up a bill and never pays.  The outside world does not read the Bible, it reads Christians.

Stealing From God

Then there is the thievery of stealing from God.  This is done by not giving Him His “tithes and offerings” – Malachi 3:8. We must give God what is rightfully His.  There is an old saying – “The love of money is the root of all evil;” but the greatest evil about money is when it is stolen from God.

Jesus: God’s Mirror in Your Heart

A man’s conscience is the Lord’s searchlight exposing his hidden motives – Prov. 20:27 – (Living Bible).  There is a remedy that covers dishonesty – the same remedy applies to all sin – Jesus Christ in the heart is the remedy!  When Jesus truly resides in the heart of the believer, Satan’s temptations are easily overcome.

The woman in the drug store who slipped the perfume in her bag was not accused of doing wrong.  Nor were the police called to arrest her and carry her to jail.  The Pharmacist handled the woman and not wanting to embarrass her and not wanting to lose a customer, he simply asked for his money.  He got it and there is no doubt that the woman was totally honest the next time she entered the store.

The God who is watching handles us wisely.  He provides us with a Saviour – His most effective prescription for sin.  He sees every misdeed through the ‘mirror’ of heaven, but He also hears every confession.  Just as the woman had to pay for the stolen goods, so the unrepentant sinner will be made to pay for every wrongdoing.

Feature: Mob Justice: A Persistent Threat – Who Might Be Next?

0
Mob Justice

Indeed, life is precious. This is a core reason everyone must strive to preserve it. Nonetheless, life can sometimes take a tragic twist. Misfortunes occur day in and day out, and death is one of them. But where, how, and when it happens often remain a mystery. Some people die through drowning at sea, others through illness, and for some, it is road accidents.

Among all these, mob justice stands out as one of the cruelest ways anyone can die. Whether a person is guilty or not, it should never be encouraged. This is because many innocent people have lost their lives. What appears to be a culprit may, in fact, be a close, innocent friend, relative, or neighbour.

See it as cruelty, control tactics, or outright inhuman behaviour, mob justice in Ghana remains a harsh reality. It persists, and many people have fallen victim to it. What makes the situation even more disturbing is that some victims are innocent, yet they are brutally assaulted, sometimes even to death.

Fatal suspicion

Stories shared by people around us reveal just how dangerous such situations can become.

In a conversation, a female colleague narrated an incident that occurred at a bus station. One day, she noticed a pickpocket dipping his hand into her handbag. She immediately called him out. Within seconds, a crowd gathered around them.

Realising the danger, she quickly told the mob that the man had not taken anything from her bag. That single statement caused the crowd to disperse.

Later, she admitted that she had been frightened by the intensity of the mob. Looking back, she believed the man might have been beaten to death, considering the kind of men who had gathered, ready to act.

Such moments show how quickly a crowd can turn violent and how easily suspicion can escalate into tragedy.

Growing concern

Relationships add flavour to our lives. Knowing that someone cares about you builds confidence and reduces the need to impress or perform. Life becomes more meaningful when relationships are cordial and supportive.Sadly, this was not the case for a young and upcoming musician whose life ended tragically.

A criminologist at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Jones Opoku, has expressed concern about the growing tendency of some Ghanaians to lynch suspected criminals instead of allowing the law to take its course.

His concerns followed the lynching of Wilberforce Appiah, popularly known as Wyllbee, at Tanoso in the Ashanti Region.

The budding musician was reportedly attacked by a mob after he was accused of theft when he stepped outside his girlfriend’s house. Reports indicate that Wilberforce Appiah had travelled from his base in Accra to Kumasi for radio promotions. Some accounts suggest that he had visited his girlfriend, Nana Yaa, who is said to be married and, while outside the house at dawn, residents suspected him of being a thief.

A mob quickly formed and attacked him. He was later rushed to the hospital but sadly died from his injuries.

However, the family of the deceased, including ObremponKwakuAsiamah, rejected claims that their relative was a thief. For them, the tragedy reflects the danger of allowing suspicion and rumour to replace due process (myjoynews.com, 2024).

Another gruesome incident that shook the entire nation was the killing of Maxwell Mahama.

Major Mahama was lynched at Denkyira-Obuasi on May 29, 2017, while he was on duty. Residents reportedly mistook the soldier for a robber.

The incident sparked widespread outrage across the country and triggered calls for stronger action against mob violence. Following investigations, more than 50 suspects were arrested, and 14 were screened for prosecution.

The mother of the late soldier, Veronica Bamford, later expressed satisfaction with the sentencing of 12 persons involved in the murder of her son (citinewsroom.com, 2024).

In recent times, even foreigners have experienced similar ordeals.

An incident on February 27, 2026, renewed concerns about mob justice in Ghana and the safety of foreign nationals living in the country. The victim, identified as Austin Tengeeh, was reportedly confronted by residents who suspected him of theft.

According to preliminary police findings, he was chased and beaten by a group before officers arrived at the scene (ghanamedia.net, 2026).

Beyond these disturbing incidents, public opinion data also reveals worrying attitudes toward mob justice.

A recent survey by Afrobarometer found that about 15 percent of Ghanaians support mob justice under certain circumstances. The figure becomes even more concerning when regional differences are considered. According to the report, support rises to 39 percent among residents in the Upper West and Northern Regions (citinewsroom.com, 2018).

These findings suggest that despite the dangers associated with mob violence, a section of the population still views it as an acceptable response to suspected crime.

Call to reflect

The recurring stories of mob justice should force society to pause and reflect.

No matter the suspicion or anger, no individual or group has the authority to act as judge, jury, and executioner. When a crowd takes the law into its own hands, the line between justice and injustice quickly disappears.

Many victims of mob attacks are never given the opportunity to prove their innocence. In some cases, mistaken identity, rumours, or mere suspicion have led to the brutal loss of human life.

By the time the truth emerges, the damage has already been done.

A society that allows mob justice to thrive risks weakening the very institutions meant to protect its citizens. When people begin to believe that instant punishment by the crowd is acceptable, trust in the police, the courts, and the rule of law gradually erodes.

Ending this troubling practice requires more than condemnation after each incident. Public education, stronger law enforcement, and community vigilance are necessary to ensure that suspects are handed over to the authorities rather than to an angry mob.

Traditional leaders, religious institutions, and the media also have an important role to play in shaping attitudes and discouraging violent responses to suspicion.

The stories we hear, whether of ordinary citizens, musicians, soldiers, or foreigners should remind us that mob justice spares no one.

In the heat of suspicion, anyone could become the next victim. Perhaps that is the most haunting lesson of all.

Bayern stage stunning second-half comeback to beat Mainz

0
Jamal Musiala, Bayern Munich

Champions Bayern Munich staged a stunning second-half comeback to beat Mainz 05 in a seven-goal thriller.

Vincent Kompany’s men were 3-0 down at the break after the Bayern boss made nine changes from the midweek win over Bayer Leverkusen in the German Cup semi-finals, with the Bundesliga title already secured following last weekend’s win over Stuttgart and with Tuesday’s Champions League last-four first-leg clash with Paris St-Germain in mind.

But he threw on Harry Kane and Michael Olise at the interval before Jamal Musiala also came on early in the second half and all three helped complete the remarkable turnaround.

Dominik Kohr scored a tidy volley in the 15th minute from a Kaishu Sano cross to put Mainz O5 into an early lead before Paul Nebel turned home a rebound from Nadiem Amiri’s saved effort.

Sheraldo Becker tapped home in first-half stoppage time after Amiri had a strike tipped on to the bar by Bayern back-up keeper Jonas Urbig and it looked like the upset was on with Bayern heading for just their second league defeat of the season.

But on-loan striker Nicolas Jackson started the comeback when he turned home Konrad Laimer’s cross seven minutes after the restart before ex-Crystal Palace winger Olise scored a stunning second after he cut inside off the left before curling the ball into the top corner in the 73rd-minute.

Olise was involved for the equaliser as he put the ball in for Musiala, who managed to bundle it over the line with 10 minutes remaining.

Kane completed the turnaround in the 83rd minute after Musiala’s cross was pushed into his path by Mainz 05 keeper Daniel Batz.

Rashford scores as Barcelona record win over Getafe

0
Marcus Rashford, Barcelona

Marcus Rashford scored as Barcelona tightened their grip on a second-successive La Liga title with victory over Getafe.

The on-loan Manchester United forwarded finished off a sweeping counter attack in the second half as Hansi Flick’s side took advantage of Real Madrid’s surprise 1-1 draw with Real Betis on Friday night.

Barcelona are now 11 points clear of their rivals with both teams having five games remaining as they close in on a 29th title.

Fermin Lopez put them in front in the 45th minute after the masked attacking midfielder was put through by a fine pass from Pedri.

Barcelona were without star player Lamine Yamal after the teenager’s season was ended by a hamstring injury in Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Celta Vigo but Rashford still had to settle for a spot on the bench before he emerged on the hour mark to replace Roony Bardghji.

Getafe are in the hunt for European places and threw bodies forward in the second half in searchung for an equaliser.

But Rashford ensured the victory with his seventh goal in La Liga when Robert Lewandowski played a ball over the top for him to run on to with the home side caught up the pitch.

The England international picked up the ball in his own half but with only Getafe goalkeeper David Soria in front of him and he showed fine composure to seal the win.

Arsenal regain top spot after narrow win against Newcastle

0
Eberechi Eze, Arsenal

Arsenal regained their place at the top of the Premier League as Eberechi Eze’s first-half strike was enough for the Gunners to beat Newcastle in a hard-fought match at Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta’s side had dropped to second place for the first time since October after Manchester City’s win against Burnley in midweek had seen them go top of the table on goal difference.

Arsenal started the game well and took the lead in the ninth minute through Eze after a well-worked short corner.

The England international was passed the ball on the edge of the box by Kai Havertz and curled an excellent strike into the top corner.

Newcastle had chances of their own through William Osula, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali but could not find a way to score in the first half.

Eddie Howe introduced Yoane Wissa and Harvey Barnes after the break as the away side chased an equaliser.

And Wissa missed a golden opportunity late on to level the match as Newcastle were defeated for the fourth league match in a row.

The win moves Arsenal three points clear at the top of the Premier League having played a game more than title-rivals Manchester City.

The only negative of the day for the Gunners was that both Havertz and Eze had to be substituted with injury.

Liverpool beat Palace to strengthen grip on a Champions League spot

0
Alexander Isak, Liverpool

Alexander Isak scored in the Premier League at Anfield for the first time since joining Liverpool as the Reds strengthened their grip on a Champions League spot with victory over Crystal Palace.

Sweden forward Isak has endured a bitterly frustrating spell since completing a British record £125m move from Newcastle.

But he set Liverpool on their way to a third straight top-flight win when his shot into the ground from 12 yards looped over the head of Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson and into the net.

Liverpool’s third-choice keeper Freddie Woodman made his first Premier League appearance for the Reds as Alisson and Giorgi Mamardashvili were both injured.

Woodman made a diving save to keep out Jean-Philippe Mateta’s header moments before Liverpool made it 2-0 through Andy Robertson.

The Scotland full-back finished off a fine counter-attack with a precise finish following a lightning attack involving Curtis Jones.

Palace set up a grandstand finish when Daniel Munoz scored from outside the box with Woodman down injured, before Eagles substitute Jorgen Strand Larsen hit the post in the 84th minute.

But the Reds sealed victory through Florian Wirtz deep into stoppage time, a right-foot finish from inside the box.
