Nigerian NGO Slams Turkish Decision To Keep Rescued Baby Gorilla

Turkey’s decision to keep an African baby gorilla rescued from trafficking defies logic, a Nigerian conservation NGO that was preparing to receive it for onward repatriation, said Saturday.

The primate was five months old when he was discovered at Istanbul airport in a wooden crate just before Christmas en route from Nigeria to Thailand and taken to a zoo in the hills outside Istanbul to recover.

Nigeria sought his repatriation, and Turkey’s conservation authorities launched the process but halted it after a DNA test confirmed Zeytin belonged to a species not native to Nigeria.

On Friday, Turkish officials announced that Zeytin would not be repatriated to Nigeria but would be kept in a zoo in Turkey.

Pandrillus Foundation in Nigeria was preparing to house Zeytin with another young gorilla of the same subspecies before sending the pair to a sanctuary in central Africa.

“We are exceedingly disappointed. There is no logic in what the Turkish government is doing,” Pandrillus Foundation director Liza Gadsby told AFP.

“And if Turkey doesn’t want to send him to Nigeria, but directly to a gorilla sanctuary, that’s fine. But they need to do the right thing for this animal,” she said.

“They did the right thing by confiscating him in the first place,” but keeping him in Turkey “goes against everything that they’re supposed to be doing as a signatory to CITES”, or the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, she said.

The Pandrillus Foundation has another gorilla that was confiscated by Nigerian customs over two years ago.

Gadsby said it would begin a process on Monday to repatriate the other gorilla to a habitat country.

“We never intended to keep her,” she said.

Madonna & Beyoncé Were First to Reach Out I Got Famous -Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande

When Ariana Grande emerged as the main pop girl to watch in the early 2010s, she already had two women whose careers she admired in her corner: Madonna and Beyoncé.

While appearing on a new episode of the Shut Up Evan podcast posted Friday (Oct. 24), Grande revealed how the two icons welcomed her with open arms after her music career first started taking off post Victorious. “I’m very lucky that my idols have been very kind to me,” she began.

“I remember Madonna immediately was very kind,” the Wicked star continued. “I think she was one of the first people to reach out and, like, give me a warm welcome, and it was just really cool. I was overwhelmed by it, because I love her so much.”

Madge would go on to support Ari throughout her career, even recording a voice-over for Grande’s 2018 “God Is a Woman” music video. On the podcast, the R.E.M. Beauty founder also shouted out Mariah Carey — “And then, of course, Mariah,” were her words — as a personal hero who took her under her wing. The pair have since collaborated a handful of times, including on a remix of Grande’s Billboard Hot 100-topping single “Yes, And?”

As for Queen Bey, Grande recalled how the Destiny’s Child alum extended an invitation to meet her in 2013. “Beyoncé had me come visit a music video she was shooting, and I was just there in the corner,” she told host Evan Ross Katz. “I was like, ‘Why am I here?’ It was after I sang ‘Tattooed Heart’ on the AMAs. She invited me to set to visit her, and she just was being kind — she gave me a little bit of advice, and, you know, I asked, but she was so kind.”

“But yeah, I feel like I had people I really looked up to embrace me,” Grande added. “It made me feel safe.”

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian is ready to give up her “Kim K” persona 10 years from now.

The reality star said she wants to be a trial lawyer after taking the bar exam in July during her appearance on “The Graham Norton Show” Friday.

“I will be qualified in two weeks. I hope to practice law,” she shared.

“Maybe in 10 years I think I’ll give up being Kim K and be a trial lawyer,” she continued. “That’s what I really want.”

Kardashian, 45, celebrated earning her law school degree after six years in May. During a private commencement ceremony hosted by family and friends, a mentor spoke about the mother of four’s hard work.

“Six years ago, Kim Kardashian walked into this program with nothing but a fierce desire to fight for justice. No law school lectures, no ivory tower shortcuts, just determination,” the mentor shared in footage Kardashian posted on her Instagram Story.

The mentor noted Kardashian dedicated “18 hours a week, 48 weeks a year for six straight years.”

“That’s a total of 5,184 hours of legal study,” she said. “That’s time she carved out while raising four children, running businesses, filming television shows and showing up in courtrooms to advocate for others.”

The “Kardashians” star first revealed she was studying law in a 2019 interview with Vogue. She shared that she felt inspired by “seeing a really good result” with Alice Marie Johnson, the prisoner she helped get released.

“I had to think long and hard about this,” she said.

“The White House called me to advise to help change the system of clemency, and I’m sitting in the Roosevelt Room with, like, a judge who had sentenced criminals and a lot of really powerful people and I just sat there, like,’Oh, s–t. I need to know more,’” she recalled. “But I had attorneys with me who could back that up with all the facts of the case.”

Yemi Alade

Popular Nigerian singer Yemi Alade has revealed how her deep commitment to music once made her lose track of time.

In an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the “Johnny” hitmaker shared that she became so engrossed in her career that she didn’t realise how quickly the years were passing.

“There was a time if someone had asked me my age, I realised I kept saying for three years that I was 22,” she recalled. “And then I realised I was 25. I took out my phone and I did the mathematics. I was depressed for a few days.”

Yemi explained that during that period, her entire world revolved around music.

“My mind was also not taking into account that years were passing by,” she said. “I was so invested and in my own world. I secluded myself and only focused on the music.”

The singer’s revelation sheds light on the often-overlooked emotional and mental sacrifices artists make while pursuing their dreams.

Amerado recounts how DJ Slim lured him into beef with Medikal

Amerado

Ghanaian rapper Amerado has disclosed that radio presenter DJ Slim influenced him to engage in a beef with fellow rapper Medikal.

He made the revelation in an interview with NY DJ on BTM Afrika.

According to Amerado, the clash was triggered by an existing banter between DJ Slim and Medikal. He said he was basically called to join the fray by the presenter.

“My beef with Medikal stemmed from a banter he had with DJ Slim. Slim called me to action, and I heeded. At the time, I was just lazing about, so I recorded ‘Medikated Soap’,” he said.

Amerado admitted that he sometimes regrets taking part in the beef, but now sees it as part of his growth in the industry.

“At some point after the release, I felt bad about it, but in music, you don’t count your regrets, so I just brushed over it,” he stated.

He further clarified that he holds Medikal in high regard, despite a recent incident where the Stubborn Academy rapper allegedly disrespected his mother.

“Medikal had never wronged me before, until recently, when he used some derogatory words directed at my mum, which got me angry, but even with that, I have not dissed him. I respect him.”

Amerado recently released his rap tape Against All Odds. He has followed it up with a four track highlife EP, Defy All Odds, and is expected to drop a reggae EP in November 2025.

Tips for Night time Cough Relief

0
Night cough

What can feel more frustrating than having a cough? Having a cough that happens more often or gets worse at night. It affects how much you can relax, fall and stay asleep, and get much-needed rest for recovery.

Not only does coughing affect your ability to get over any illnesses that may cause the cough, but it may also cause you to have more symptoms that further affect your nighttime rest.

Nighttime coughing can happen and feel worse for many reasons. It may be due to problems with your lungs and airways, such as infection, postnasal drip, allergies, and asthma.

Tips for Calming Nighttime Coughing

How you manage your nighttime cough depends on how serious it is and what’s causing it, Roundtreee says. She advises seeing a doctor if your cough is constant, very bad, and comes with other concerning symptoms.

In the meantime, you can try this expert advice for managing mild coughs at night:

  1. Stay hydrated. This can help loosen mucus and make it easier to get rid of, Roundtree says. Make sure you are providing your body with plenty of fluids.  You can do this by drinking water as often as needed and eating water-rich foods like melons, pineapples, strawberries, and oranges.
  2. Drink herbal tea with honey and lemon. Mathis recommends teas for cough due to upper respiratory infections, allergies, and postnasal drip. “A simple remedy that’s very effective for coughing is a nighttime herbal tea with honey and lemon,” Mathis says. “Honey helps coat the throat and prevent irritation and the cough reflex. The lemon has anti-inflammatory qualities that may help cough.”  You can also try other hot teas since they may be helpful to soothe an irritated throat, Roundtree says.
  3. Take honey. It’s a natural cough suppressant that helps reduce how often you cough and how serious the coughing is, Roundtree says. “Consider natural or locally grown honey as a bonus,” she says.
  4. Cough drops. These are helpful short-term fixes for soothing an irritated throat and stopping a stubborn, hacking cough, Roundtree says. “They cause the mouth to produce more saliva, thus coating the throat and helping with itching sensations.”
  5. Have a steamy shower. Steam from showers adds moisture to the air, which can help open your airways and loosen up secretions in the nose, Roundtree says. Take a steamy shower before bedtime to relieve your cough and help your body relax for a better night’s sleep.
  6. Think about what and when you eat. If the nighttime cough is due to GERD, McBane recommends avoiding heavy, spicy, fatty, and late-night meals because they may make your GERD symptoms worse and cause nighttime coughing. Foods high in fiber, water, and alkaline can improve your symptoms. So consider eating those instead at least 3 hours before bedtime. These foods include bananas, brown rice, sweet potatoes, broccoli, watermelon, carrots, cucumber, pineapple, and brothy soups.
  7. Try OTC medications for GERD. “Some OTC medication options include antacids like Tums or medications that block the production of acid like famotidine (Pepcid) or omeprazole (Prilosec),” McBane says. “These medications can help with the reflux-related nighttime cough by decreasing the amount of acid irritating the throat and causing the cough.”
  8. Take an antihistamine. Antihistamine medications, which help with allergies, may be useful for nighttime cough due to postnasal drip. McBane suggests taking an antihistamine like diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or loratadine (Claritin). She adds that they can help with postnasal drip-related cough by drying up nasal mucus, meaning there will be less fluid to collect in the back of your throat and irritate the tissues there.
  9. Lie with your head raised. If your cough is caused by GERD, one of the easiest remedies is to raise the head of your bed by 4-6 inches, Mathis says. “Just a slight tilt is enough to let gravity keep the stomach acid in the stomach.” McBane suggests elevating the head of your bed using bricks or blocks.
  10. Use a humidifier. “If the cough is due to dry air, consider a humidifier. Try to keep humidity at 40% to 50%,” Mathis says. “Any more than that could make your cough worse or increase your risk of infection.”
  11. Reduce allergens in your home. If your coughing is due to allergies, cutting down the number of allergens around you may help prevent it. A great tip is to clean and dust your home regularly to prevent dust buildup, Mathis says. You can also invest in a HEPA filter to get rid of allergens in the air. If you have pets, have them sleep outside of your bedroom. Wash your bedding regularly, too.
  12. Consider over-the-counter (OTC) medication. When all else fails, an over-the-counter cough medicine can provide relief.

Napoli defeat title rivals Inter Milan

Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay helped Napoli win the league last season

Scott McTominay and Kevin de Bruyne scored as defending champions Napoli beat title rivals Inter Milan and moved to the top of the Serie A table.

The hosts led at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona through De Bruyne’s first-half penalty, before McTominay and Frank Anguissa struck to secure Napoli’s first win in three games – after a league defeat by Torino and the midweek 6-2 thrashing by PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.

But in a setback for Antonio Conte’s side, Belgian midfielder De Bruyne – who has four goals in eight games  – limped off the pitch soon after scoring.

It was Inter who made the better start as their captain Lautaro Martinez was denied from close range by Napoli goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.

But Napoli went ahead through De Bruyne’s penalty in the 33rd minute after Henrikh Mkhitaryan fouled Giovanni di Lorenzo inside the box.

It was the final involvement of the evening for both De Bruyne and Mkhitaryan as the former Manchester United midfielder was swiftly taken off by Inter manager Cristian Chivu.

Mbeumo scores brace as Man United survive beat Brighton

0
Manchester United players celebrating a goal

Bryan Mbeumo scored twice as Manchester United survived a late scare against Brighton to claim a third successive Premier League win for the first time since February 2024, moving them up to fourth in the table.

United were cruising after an hour thanks to goals from Matheus Cunha, who broke his 16-match scoring drought by netting for the first time for his new club, Casemiro’s deflected effort and Mbeumo’s neat finish.

But Danny Welbeck’s brilliant free-kick pulled one back against his old club with 16 minutes left. Then, two minutes into the seven added, Charalampos Kostoulas flicked home a near-post header.

Suddenly there were some worried faces in the United ranks and it took an even later effort from Mbeumo, drilled into the roof of the net from 12 yards, to ease the tension.

They may only stay there for a matter of hours but United suddenly find themselves in a much better state than three weeks ago, when it was felt by many a home defeat by Sunderland would have left head coach Ruben Amorim clinging to his job.

Now there is a hint of swagger about Amorim’s team, who should have won by more and certainly with no need for the worries at the end.
