He was accompanied by prominent members of the NPP, including the former Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu; former Managing Director of the State Transport Company (STC), Nana Akomea; and former Sunyani East Member of Parliament, Ameyaw Kyeremeh.

Other regional and constituency executives of the party were also in attendance.

Inspector Twumasi jailed for life for murder of Maa Adwoa

Inspector Ahmed Twumasi - Sentenced to life imprisonment

A Kumasi High Court, presided over by Her Ladyship Mrs. Rosemary BaahTosu, last Friday sentenced Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi to life imprisonment for the murder of Victoria Dapaah, also called Maadwoa in April 2023 at Adum in Kumasi. The seven-member jury voted 5-2 to pass the verdict of murder on Inspector Twumasi of the Police SWAT unit.

Victoria Dapaah was found dead in a pool of blood in the evening with multiple gunshot wounds in April, 2023 at Adum and several eyewitnesses account implicated the involvement of Inspector Twumasi who was reportedly secretly dating the deceased.

The frustrations of the deceased’s family coupled with public discourse at the time, heightened the suspicion that the police were shielding or protecting their own when Twumasi was not immediately arrested after the crime even though his name popped up as the prime suspect.

The accused, throughout his trial, consistently denied all the charges against him including having an amorous relationship with the deceased, which according to the prosecution, at a point almost collapsed his own marriage. Twumasi also denied that he used his service sidearm or pistol to commit the murder.

Twumasi, after he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, pleaded for leniency citing his responsibility as a father and a breadwinner for his 10-year old child.

The deceased’s mother, Madam AdwoaNyarko said the verdict brought an emotion of mixed feelings of happiness and sadness at the same time. Happy because the family obtained justice for their deceased daughter, but sad because she (their daughter) was not alive to witness the verdict.

She said she was vexed at Twumasi’s plea for leniency citing his concern for his own 10-year old son and described it as callous because he had deprived their daughter’s child also of a mother.

Nana Addo Barimah, family head and Victoria’s uncle, expressed surprise that two of the jurors dissented and voted for Twumasi’s acquittal, but expressed the relief that the family has finally gotten justice for their deceased daughter.

Protests over directive to A/R GPRTU Execs to step aside

0

Some concerned members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Ashanti Region has registered their dismay over the decision of the National Working Committee (NWC) of GPRTU, directing all the Ashanti Regional Executives to step aside for an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to oversee the activities of the Regional Secretariat.

The Ashanti Regional Secretariat of the GPRTU had their Executive Elections, slated for July 1, 2025 postponed due to a court order that barred the incumbent Regional Chairman, SumailaBoakye, from seeking another term.

The injunction was filed by three members from the Takoradi-Elubo Station Branch of the Ashanti Regional GPRTU, demanding accountability and stewardship of Mr.Boakye’s tenure at the said branch.

But speaking on behalf of the group at a press conference in Kumasi, Mr. Charles Mensah, Secretary of the Kumasi-Manso branch of the union indicated that the decision by the NWC, is contrary to the 2024 Constitution of the GPRTU, which is the fundamental law or code guiding all activities of the Union.

He explained that the issue regarding the election of the Regional Executives was currently pending before a Kumasi High Court and that a motion for an interlocutory injunction was being sought   to restraint the GPRTU from conducting the elections.

Mr. Mensah argued  that the decision  directing Regional Executives to step aside was not taken by all the National Executives and/or the right persons mandated to do so and stressed that they (concerned members) “will neither accept nor cooperate” with any IMC until the law Court determines the contentious matter between the parties.

He called on the national executive Council of the GPRTU and the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) to, as a matter of urgency, intervene and bring sanity to Ashanti Regional GPRTU.

Mr. Mensah urged the national executives of GPRTU to eschew partisan and personal interest in the resolution of the matter to avoid any future occurrence and ensure the smooth running of the Regional GPRTU.

Mr. Martin Forkuo, Chairman, Central Branch, GPRTU-Ashanti disclosed that letter from the national secretariat, which directs the Ashanti Regional Executives to step aside for an IMC to takeoverthe helm of affairs was contrary to the Union’s 2024 Constitution, which prescribes how an IMC can be formulated.

He explained that under Article 23 (Appointment of Interim Management Committee) of the said Constitution, an IMC can be formulated on the premises of “impropriety”, such as dishonest professional behaviour contending that the Regional Chairman, Vice Chairman, First Trustee and Industrial Relations Officer (IRO), are not engaged in any improprieties.

Mr.Forkuo also indicated that Article 13 (Election Qualification), Sub-Section (P) of the Union’s 2024 Constitution stipulates that current executives, after their four-year tenure, must oversee the elections of new executive, and if elections cannot be conducted due to any “incumbrances” (in this case the interlocutory injunction), the current executives “must remove the obstacle” before elections can be conducted.

Mr.Forkuo indicated that the Ashanti Regional Working Committee, which oversee the administration of the Union in region, had issued a letter, dated October 21, 2025 protesting the “directive” from the national secretariat, with the Ashanti Regional IRO being a signatory, which proves the directive was contrary to the Union’s Constitution.

The Central branch chairman called on the National Executives to withdraw its directive to avoid litigation.

Venezuela’s Maduro says the US is ‘fabricating’ a war against him

0
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro

Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro has said the United States government is “fabricating” a war against him as Washington sent the world’s biggest warship towards the South American country.

It signals a major escalation of the US’s military presence in the region amid speculation of an attempt to overthrow the Venezuelan government.

Maduro said in a national broadcast on Friday night that US President Donald Trump’s administration is “fabricating a new eternal war” as the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R Ford, which can host up to 90 aeroplanes and attack helicopters, moves closer to Venezuela.

Trump has accused him, without providing evidence, of being the leader of the organised crime gang Tren de Aragua.

Tren de Aragua, which traces its roots to a Venezuelan prison, is not known for having a big role in global drug trafficking but for its involvement in contract killings, extortion and people smuggling.

Maduro was widely accused of stealing last year’s election in Venezuela, and countries, including the US, have called for him to go.

Tensions are mounting in the region, with Trump saying he has authorised CIA operations in Venezuela and that he is considering ground attacks against alleged drug cartels in the Caribbean country.

Embattled Argentina President faces critical midterm elections

0
Argentina President Javier Milei

Voters in Argentina are heading to the polls in midterm legislative elections that will gauge support for President Javier Milei’s sweeping free-market reforms, which have caused austerity pains for many, at a critical juncture in his presidency.

Elections are being held on Sunday for half of Argentina’s lower Chamber of Deputies, or 127 seats, as well as a third of the Senate, or 24 seats. The outcome could determine whether Milei’s libertarian programme of hefty budget cuts and bids to deregulate the country’s struggling economy will endure.

Milei’s La Libertad Avanza party, a relatively new political force in Argentina, has only 37 deputies and six senators, amounting to less than 15 percent of seats in Congress.

The party is aiming to boost that share to at least a third of seats in Congress – to help defend against opposition attempts to thwart the president’s agenda, to shore up investor confidence and, crucially, to retain Milei’s support from fellow right-winger United States President Donald Trump.

“Don’t give up because we’re halfway there,” Milei told supporters at a closing campaign event in the port city of Rosario on Thursday. “We’re on a good path.”

Earlier this month, Washington pledged a $40bn potential bailout, including a $20bn currency swap to stabilise the value of the peso, and a possible $20bn “facility”.

But Trump has threatened to pull away if his populist ally performs poorly, warning that “if he doesn’t win, we’re not going to waste our time, because you have somebody whose philosophy has no chance of making Argentina great again.”

Trump’s bailout plans have infuriated US farmers struggling amid his trade war with China, and many have questioned his “America First” credentials.

On October 19, a reporter asked Trump why he decided to aid Argentina despite concerns among US soya producers.

“Argentina is fighting for its life,” Trump answered. “Young lady, you don’t know anything about it. … They have no money. They have no anything.”

Currently, both chambers in Argentina are controlled by the left-wing and centrist opposition to Milei’s party, with the Peronist opposition movement currently holding the largest minority in both houses.

Russia says it has tested nuclear-powered Burevestnik missile

Russia President Vladimir Putin

Russia has tested the nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile, Moscow’s top general has said.

“We have launched a multi-hour flight of a nuclear-powered missile and it covered a 14,000km (8,700-mile) distance, which is not the limit,” Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov told President Vladimir Putin in a televised meeting.

The low-flying experimental weapon, first announced in 2018, has been hailed as having a potentially unlimited range and the ability to evade missile defences.

Western experts have previously cast doubt over missile’s strategic value and Russian claims of having successfully tested it.

Putin said a “final successful test” of the weapon had been held in 2023, but the claim could not be independently verified. Of at least 13 known tests, only two had partial success since 2016, according to an arms control campaign group.

Gen Gerasimov said the missile was in the air for 15 hours during the test on 21 October.

He said the missile’s vertical and horizontal manoevreing were tested and were found to be up to specification, according to Russia’s Tass news agency.

“Therefore, it demonstrated high capabilities to bypass missile and air defence systems,” Tass reported Gen Gerasimov as saying.

The missile’s utility has been the subject of intense debate in military and defences circles since it was first announced in 2018.

A 2021 report by the US Air Force’s National Air and Space Intelligence Center concluded: “A nuclear-powered cruise missile would give Russia a unique weapon with intercontinental range capability.”

Trump presides over Thai-Cambodia ‘peace deal’

Trump presides over Thai-Cambodia peace deal

It was, as everyone knew it would be, all about US President Donald Trump.

He literally towered over everyone else at the ceremony in Kuala Lumpur where Cambodia and Thailand signed their agreement. He gave the longest speech – and made the biggest claims.

It was all superlatives.

“This is a momentous day for South East Asia,” Trump said. “A monumental step.”

Describing the two slightly sheepish-looking prime ministers who were about to sign the deal as “historic figures”, Trump recalled at length how he got involved in the Thai-Cambodian border conflict while he was visiting his Turnberry golf course in Scotland in July.

“And I said this is much more important than a round of golf… I could have had a lot of fun, but this is much more fun… saving people and saving countries.”

Trump had asked for this special ceremony as a condition for coming to the annual Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit – a gathering US presidents have attended at times in the past, but not always. And he used it to press his campaign to be recognised as a great peacemaker.

But what does the “Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord”, as Trump has renamed it, actually amount to?

The two countries have agreed to withdraw their heavy weapons from the disputed border and to establish an interim observer team to monitor it.

They have a new procedure for clearing landmines, and will set up what they call a joint taskforce to address the proliferation of scam centres.

They will replace missing border markers with temporary ones.
