Arsenal beat Crystal Palace to extend lead

Eberechi Eze celebrates his first Premier League goal for Arsenal

Eberechi Eze scored against his former club as Arsenal beat Crystal Palace to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to four points.

Eze joined the Gunners in a deal worth £67m in the summer and his winner came from another trademark Arsenal set-piece.

Declan Rice curled a free-kick into the area which was knocked down by centre-back Gabriel, then Eze acrobatically fired the ball into the corner of the net.

Crystal Palace, who lost to AEK Larnaca in midweek, did threaten on occasion with Jean-Philippe Mateta battling against the solid Arsenal defence – but they did not trouble David Raya in goal.

Arsenal nearly doubled their lead in the second half when Gabriel hit the crossbar with a header and Bukayo Saka went close with a curled effort from the edge of the penalty area.

The win means Arsenal are now unbeaten in 10 matches in all competitions.

Aston Villa in hard-fought victory over Manchester City

Matty Cash scored for Aston Villa

Unai Emery celebrated three years as Aston Villa manager with a hard-fought victory to end off-colour Manchester City’s nine-game unbeaten run.

Villa are unrecognisable since the Spaniard took over from Steven Gerrard in 2022 and, after a sticky start this season and shock defeat by Go Ahead Eagles in the Europa League on Thursday, the battling victory over City was their fourth on the bounce in the league.

The hosts netted the winner on 19 minutes courtesy of Matty Cash’s precise left-foot finish from the edge of the box after a corner, but the visitors were unhappy with the set-piece being awarded, feeling Lucas Digne had fouled Matheus Nunes in the build-up.

City had the opportunity to level just two minutes later when Phil Foden found a pass through to the usually-reliable Erling Haaland, but the striker’s low shot was smothered by Emiliano Martinez.

Pep Guardiola’s men were disjointed following Tuesday’s trip to Villarreal in the Champions League – and could have fallen further behind in the second half.

But John McGinn’s thumping volley was blocked and City keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made a double save to deny Jadon Sancho after he had wriggled his way through.

At the other end, winger Savinho’s volley was brilliantly cleared off the line by Pau Torres and Haaland had a late goal ruled out for offside which summed up his and City’s disappointing day as they missed the chance to go second.

Mbappe, Bellingham help Real Madrid beat Barcelona

Jude Bellingham had a hand in both goals, and Kylian Mbappe continued his excellent run of form as Real Madrid beat Barcelona in the first Clasico of the year, 2-1. It was hardly a legendary iteration of this famous fixture, but two first half goals from Los Blancos was enough to see off the short handed Blaugrana.

Madrid thought they might have had a penalty early on, but saw one chalked off after Vinicius Jr was adjudged to have kicked the ground as he burst into the box.

It was a sign of chaos to come. Mbappe had another one disallowed for a narrow offside. But on the second time of asking there was no such call. Bellingham played him through, Mbappe paused and then lashed into the bottom corner.

Los Blancos then gifted Barca an equaliser, Arda Guler giving the ball away at the top of his own box to allow an unmarked Fermin Lopez to ghost into the area and finish. But Madrid had more in them, still. Bellingham made it 2-1 thanks to an easy tap in after no one tracked the Englishman on a set piece.

They had a chance to put the ball away in the second half from the spot. Yet Wojciech Szczesny responded, saving Mbappe’s penalty after a lengthy VAR review handed Madrid a fortuitous spot kick. It was a rather quiet second half, with Barca, without Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski, having few attacking ideas.

Tensions rise in Krobo over abandoned Somanya–Kpong road

0
Bad road

Public anger continues to mount in the Krobo area following the abandonment of the Somanya–Odumase–Kpong road, as a coalition of civic groups has rebuked comments made by Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, Member of Parliament for the Lower Manya Krobo Constituency and Deputy Minister for Interior, describing protesters as people who “have no shame.”

The remarks were made days after hundreds of frustrated residents from the Yilo and Lower ManyaKrobo municipalities staged a massive demonstration on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 to protest the deplorable condition of the 24-kilometre stretch, a critical artery connecting communities and markets across the Eastern Region.

Led by a coalition of Krobo civic groups – KlomaHengmeAdolf Nomo and Dangme Youth for Development, demonstrators marched through the dusty cratered road to demand urgent government intervention.
In a petition to President John Mahama, they described the road as a daily affliction” for commuters and residents alike, citing worsening potholes, dust pollution and life-threatening driving conditions since the project was abandoned earlier this year.

The groups said the road’s deterioration has resulted in rising respiratory diseases, high vehicle maintenance costs and the collapse of small businesses dependent on the route.

Ambulances, they added, now struggle to reach patients on time, turning emergencies into tragedies.

According to the petition, the project, which has faced years of neglect, began in 2016 and was halted in 2017, following a change in government, re-awarded in 2024 and abandoned once again in early 2025, after yet another change of administration.

Calls for Presidential Action

The petition, signed by Isaac TamateyOtu, Chairman of KlomaHengme and Simon Teye, President of Dangme Youth for Development urged the President to direct the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Ghana Highways Authority to ensure that the contractor returns to site within 60 days.
They also demanded the use of durable materials capable of supporting the heavy limestone trucks that ply the corridor and requested interim reliefs such as grading, dust control, and protective barriers near schools and health centres.

Failure to act, the groups warned, would leave residents with no choice but to intensify civil action.

“The patience of the Krobo people has been stretched beyond endurance,” the petition read, adding “This is not merely a call for road construction but a plea for justice, equity and respect for citizens who have long fulfilled their civic duties.”

MP’s Remarks Spark Outrage

However, what began as a civic protest has since morphed into a political controversy as deputy minister Terlabiaccused the demonstrators of being members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), alleging political motives behind the protest.

The Coalition of Krobo Groups has strongly condemned the comments, calling them “reckless, offensive and unbecoming of a Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister.”

In a public statement issued on October 22, the Coalition said the MP’s remarks undermine the dignity of Parliament and insult citizens exercising their constitutional right to protest.

“To attack suffering constituents rather than empathize with their plight is morally indefensible,” the statement said, demanding a public and unqualified apology from MrTerlabi to the chiefs and people of Krobo.

The coalition also urged the MP to recommit himself to the principles of humility, decorum, and public service, and to represent all constituents fairly, irrespective of political affiliation.

Reaffirming that the protest was not organised on a partisan basis, the groups emphasized that their campaign is about basic human dignity, not politics.
“The demand for a safe, motorable road is not political,it is a call for fairness, justice and respect for the people.”

For now, Krobo residents remain hopeful that their collective voice amplified through protest and public advocacy will finally compel action on a road project that has come to symbolise broken promises and official neglect.

Unemployed man granted GH¢80,000 bail for alleged land fraud at Abensu

A court gavel

The Circuit Court in Dansoman, presided over by Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Bassit, has granted bail to a 49-year-old unemployed man, Ahmed Botchway, in the sum of GH¢80,000 with three sureties.

Two of the sureties are required to be public servants earning not less than GH¢5,000 monthly and residing within the court’s jurisdiction.

As part of his bail conditions, the accused is to deposit his Ghana Card at the court registry and report to the police once every week until further notice.

Ahmed Botchway has been charged with defrauding by false pretence, contrary to Section 131(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

According to the brief facts presented by the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder, the complainant, Jennifer Anima Boateng, a self-employed woman living at Abensu, near Pokuase, was allegedly defrauded by the accused in 2021.

The prosecution said the accused contacted the complainant’s brother, Benjamin AntwiBoateng, who resides in the United Kingdom, claiming he had a parcel of land for sale at Abensu.

After negotiations, the two parties agreed on a price of GH¢85,000, and a part payment of GH¢20,000 was made.

The complainant later completed payment of GH¢75,000, after which the accused handed over documents purported to cover the said land.

However, when the complainant began transporting building materials to the site to start construction, one Nana Addo appeared and claimed ownership of the land, producing a valid land title certificate to prove his claim.

Subsequent attempts by the complainant to reach the accused failed, prompting her to lodge a complaint with the police on July 9, 2025. Investigations revealed that the accused was already in police custody at the Central Police Station.

Upon interrogation, the accused admitted collecting the GH¢75,000, claiming he would refund the money by the end of August 2025, a promise he failed to fulfil.

After investigations, the accused was charged and arraigned before the court.

The court has directed the prosecution to file all disclosures and witness statements to facilitate the Case Management Conference (CMC) by November 26, 2025.

The case has been adjourned to a later date for continuation.

Lifestyle Audits Must Become Mandatory For Public Officials

0
Editorial

Talk about corruption, particularly within Ghana’s public service, is no longer new. It has become a canker, a cancerous cell steadily eating away at the marrow of national development. Once upon a time, society was critical of how people acquired their wealth. Suspicious riches invited scrutiny and even rejection, not admiration. Families would distance themselves from relatives whose sudden fortunes could not be explained. Sadly, those days are gone.

Today, society glorifies the very behaviour it once condemned. People flaunt questionable wealth, and instead of shame, they are met with applause. Such individuals now use their ill-gotten riches as trump cards to win political power and social recognition. The moral fabric that once bound our society together has frayed dangerously, leaving a gaping hole where integrity used to reside.

These concerns are not just the lamentations of the old or the cynical. Eminent citizens like the Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Sir Sam Jonah, have raised the alarm about the sources of Ghana’s newfound “glamour.” He argues that much of the country’s luxury real estate, especially the high-rise apartments that now dominate the skylines of Airport Residential, Cantonments and Labone, are being financed through dishonest and illicit means.

As Sir Jonah points out, in most parts of the world, real estate developers rely on bank loans, which require financial transparency and accountability. But in Ghana, countless buildings spring up without any sign of financial traceability, only to remain empty for years. These ghost towers, he warns, are monuments to corruption—evidence of money laundering and illicit financial flows hiding in plain sight.

Adding his voice, former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo has issued a stinging critique of Ghana’s anti-corruption fight. According to him, this fight is being deliberately sabotaged by a judiciary susceptible to political and financial influence. He alleges that powerful corruption suspects often employ well-connected lawyers to “procure” favourable judges, effectively stalling cases, until political winds shift in their favour.

Mr.Domelevo has proposed bold reforms: corruption cases, he insists, must be concluded within nine to twelve months, with judges held personally accountable for undue delays. He further calls for the establishment of a 24-hour justice system to expedite the handling of corruption-related cases and clear the mounting backlog.

While The Chronicle cannot independently verify some of Mr Domelevo’s allegations, especially the claim about “procuring judges”, we find his concerns and those of Sir Sam Jonah deeply troubling. The evidence is all around us: the Auditor-General’s annual reports continue to reveal billions of cedis lost to corruption and we are told these figures only scratch the surface.

The consequences of corruption are everywhere – on our pothole-ridden roads, in our under-equipped hospitals, in our dilapidated schools and in the inefficiencies of our social infrastructure. Corruption has robbed Ghana of progress and robbed its citizens of dignity. We, therefore, call on the CID, EOCO, FIC, NIB, and other investigative bodies to rise above interference and live up to their constitutional mandates.

Lifestyle audits must become mandatory for public officials, and the judiciary must deliver justice in real time, not on the slow timetable of convenience. Ghana stands at a moral crossroads. The question is whether we will continue to celebrate corruption or finally confront it before it consumes us entirely.

President John Dramani Mahama has declared three days of national mourning in honour of the late former First Lady, Her Excellency Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.

The mourning period, which spans from Friday, October 24 to Sunday, October 26, 2025, is to commemorate the life and legacy of the distinguished stateswoman who devoted her life to public service, women’s empowerment, and social development.

A statement from the Jubilee House announced that during the period of mourning, all national flags will fly at half-mast across public buildings, government installations, and Ghana’s diplomatic missions abroad. Flying the national flag at half-mast, the statement explained, is a mark of solemn respect and a national symbol of grief in honour of the late former First Lady’s remarkable contributions to the country.

“This is in honour of her memory and in recognition of her distinguished service to our nation. Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings served Ghana with dedication and commitment, particularly in women’s empowerment, child welfare, and social development,” the statement read.

The late former First Lady is being fondly remembered for her fearless advocacy, leadership, and unwavering commitment to gender equality and national progress.

May her soul rest in perfect peace.

Bawumia Wins Hearts Of 63 MPs

0
Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia

Former Vice President, Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, has won the hearts of 63 Members of Parliament on the Minority side, who have publicly declared their support for him.

The number represents about 72% of the entire 87 MPs, forming a minority on the ticket of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

It is not clear who the remaining 24 are supporting amongst the other four flagbearer aspirants, as there is no official declaration yet.

However, The Chronicle can report that, apart from the 63 who have come public, there are two others who have pleaded anonymity for various reasons.

The official declaration of support comes after some of the MPs visited Dr Bawumia in June, this year, to assure him of their support.

The announcement made Thursday, 23 October, 2025 with names and constituencies and even regions of these 63 MPs, only makes it official, especially as the campaign has officially started.

The group addressed the Parliamentary Press Corps yesterday, indicating that their endorsement of Dr Bawumia was motivated by the need for continued progress and national unity.

The MP for Mampong, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, who addressed the press, sandwiched by his colleagues, stated that their preferred choice, Dr Bawumia, has been tried, tested and proven competent.

“We declare our total unwavering support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the flagbearer of our great party. We make this declaration not out of sentiment but from deep conviction,” he said.

The former Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ampratwum-Sarpong, continued that, “We have seen his work, his discipline, his resilience and his readiness to serve.”

The group believes that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia embodies the next chapter of NPP’s vision, explaining the vision as a “future built on competence, innovation, unity and hope. He is not just the candidate who can unite our party; he is the leader who can win the confidence of the Ghanaian people and secure victory for the NPP in 2028 and beyond.”

He portrayed the former Vice President as a symbol of renewal who breaks barriers and inspires belief that Ghana’s best days are yet to come.

JOURNEY

The group chronicled the journey of Dr Bawumia from the Bank of Ghana to Vice President, arguing that leadership is not about words but work, not about entitlement but excellence and delivery.

“He has walked with the NPP through every season of victory and challenge, serving faithfully, defending our record and carrying our message with conviction and grace,” the group said in their statement.

Remembering how the NPP had lived since its formation, the group noted that the party had risen on the shoulders of visionaries such as Danquah, Dombo and Busia, adding that that tradition finds new strength and purpose in Dr Bawumia.
