Teaching Methods In Schools: Persistent Challenges

0
Opinion

The journey to help learners achieve learning standards can be joyful or frustrating. Much of this depends on the quality and effectiveness of teaching methods. In Ghana, however, some basic schools are handicapped, unable to thrive or excel. One issue that is often overlooked is the persistent difficulty teachers face when applying teaching methods in the classroom.

Teaching methods are the approaches, techniques, or styles used in instruction. They include group discussions, lectures, project work, role play, videos, and field trips. Skutil et al. (2016) note that “teaching methods are a pillar of education — structured systems designed to achieve specific learning goals. They also encompass pedagogy, classroom management strategies, and general teaching principles. The choice of method depends on factors such as a teacher’s educational philosophy, class size, subject area, and the school’s mission.”

When applied well, good teaching methods promote clarity, understanding, and achievement. They can even excite learners to the point where they wish the lesson never ends. But when misapplied, they create confusion, reduce attention, and in some cases lead parents to withdraw their children from school.

The new basic school curriculum urges teachers to adopt learner-centered instruction. This approach requires teachers to use innovative teaching methods that match learners’ needs. Yet many teachers struggle not because they lack knowledge, but because deciding which methods to use, when to use them, and how to apply them effectively is a daily challenge.

Research

A study by Salia (2022), “Senior High School Teachers’ Pedagogical Content Knowledge and the Instructional Methods or Techniques They use in the Teaching and Learning of Social Studies in the Kumasi Metropolis,” found that many teachers did not employ appropriate techniques in their classrooms.

So, what causes this strain?

Crowded Classrooms

Class size refers to the number of learners per teacher, and it strongly affects teaching methods. Yet some Ghanaian schools have 70 to 100 pupils per teacher, far above the Ghana Education Service’s recommended 40:1 ratio (Odoom Ocra, 2025).

In such large classes, small-group discussions or project-based learning become nearly impossible. Even rearranging desks or forming groups turns chaotic. Learners lose focus, participation drops, and teachers become exhausted. What was meant to enhance learning instead becomes stressful and ineffective.

Inadequate Resources

Many public classrooms lack basic teaching and learning materials. Despite years of complaints, support remains limited. Without textbooks, charts, visual aids, or technology, teachers are forced to improvise or avoid certain methods altogether.

Even when materials are available, they are often old, damaged, or insufficient for the number of learners. Schools without reliable electricity cannot use digital tools like computers or projectors. This limits teachers’ creativity and increases the pressure they face in applying effective methods.

Heavy Workload

A heavy workload adds to the difficulty. According to the Ghana Education Service (GES, 2022), about 30% of public basic schools in rural areas lack the required number of teachers. As a result, some teachers handle multiple classes or subjects far more than one person can manage well.

Abonyi (2020), in “Exploring Work Environment Factors Influencing the Application of Teacher Professional Development in Ghanaian Basic Schools,” found that teachers cited heavy workloads as a major barrier to using new skills learned from professional development. Tired teachers often fall back on lecture-style teaching which is convenient, but limiting for learner engagement.

Time Constraints

Teachers are often under pressure to finish the syllabus within a short period. Sometimes this teaching time is interrupted by extracurricular activities, midterm exams, or other school events. Because of these interruptions, some teachers rush through lessons and have little or no time to use different teaching methods.

When the same method is used every day, learners get bored. Those who learn better with other methods become confused and unsure how to achieve the expected learning outcomes. As a result, teaching becomes routine, and learning becomes less effective.

Conclusively, improving teaching methods should not be the teacher’s responsibility alone. Policymakers, school leaders, and communities must create an enabling environment: one where teachers have the time, tools, and training to turn sound pedagogy into real learning gains. Only then can learning standards be achieved and learners’ futures secured.

The United States Mission in Nigeria has expressed condolences to the family and loved ones of Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, who passed away on January 15, describing him as a fearless champion of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

In a post shared on its official X account, the US Mission said Imam Abdullahi’s life and work stood as a powerful symbol of humanity beyond religious divides.

“Imam Abubakar Abdullahi was a fearless advocate for religious tolerance whose courage saved lives and strengthened interfaith harmony,” the Mission stated.

The Mission recalled that Imam Abdullahi was formally honoured with the 2019 International Religious Freedom Award by the US Department of State for his heroic actions in June 2018, when he sheltered and protected hundreds of Christians fleeing deadly attacks in Barkin Ladi, Plateau State.

“His courageous efforts in Barkin Ladi saved the lives of hundreds of Christians who were under attack,” the statement noted.

According to the US Mission, the late cleric’s compassion and outreach across religious communities embodied the true spirit of peaceful coexistence.

“His humanity positively manifested interfaith coexistence and harmony,” the Mission said, adding that “his legacy of peace and acceptance will live on and continue to inspire Nigerians and Americans alike.”

The trial of 46-year-old, Adeniyi Kayode, driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the road accident involving heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Josh and claimed the lives of his two friends has been adjourned to February 25th 2026.

Recall that Kayode was charged to Sagamu Magistrate Court, on the 2nd of January with Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun presiding.

He was charged on a four count charge which includes dangerous driving Causing Death, contrary to Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F: 135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 (as applicable in Ogun State).

“Reckless and Negligent Driving, contrary to Section 6(1) of the same Act. Driving Without Due Care and Attention, causing bodily harm and damage to property, contrary to Section 7(1) of the Act and driving without a valid national driver’s license, contrary to Section 10(1) of the Federal Highway Act.

Insecurity: Treat human lives as sacred –Peter Obi tells Nigerian Government

0
Peter Obi

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has charged the Federal Government to treat human lives as sacred.

In a post on his verified X handle on Tuesday, Obi said it was time to confront insecurity in Nigeria.

He was reacting to the alleged abduction of over 100 worshippers from three churches in Kaduna State.

He said, “Nigeria deserves a government that treats human life as sacred, the time to confront this insecurity is now.

“I have just been informed that yet again, at the weekend, about 172 worshippers were abducted from churches in Kaduna. This is yet another unfortunate consequence of a nation where insecurity has been allowed to grow, unchecked and unchallenged in our everyday lives, as though it were normal. This should not be.

“Even with the government and police stating they are not aware of this incident, we must ask ourselves hard questions. Is this how we will continue? Can we keep waking up to news of mass abductions, disputed figures, and official denials while citizens live in fear? Whether confirmed or contested, the frequency of such reports alone shows a greater crisis of safety, leadership, and unity.

“Just recently, other communities in Benue, Zamfara, Kano, Niger and Plateau, have faced similarly gruesome insecurity. Nigeria is not at war, yet here we are again, counting victims with inconsistencies that surpass those of nations at war. A government that can mobilise resources for waste, for propaganda, for foreign lobbyists, but cannot secure communities or protect its people has misplaced its priorities.

“To the people of Kaduna, you are not alone. We stand with you, and to the families whose loved ones were taken, we share in your pain. We pray and hope that those abducted will be found and returned safely, and that those injured in the course of this attack receive swift and full medical recovery.”

The UK’s move followed Mauritius’s legal victory in a landmark decolonisation case at the International Court of Justice seven years ago after it had been strongarmed by the UK into selling the colonial territory for 3 million pounds (today worth $4m) in exchange for its independence in 1968. Under a bilateral deal signed in 2025, the UK retains control of the

Trump, who had previously appeared to back the UK’s attempt to right what is widely perceived as a colonial wrong under the rules based
international order, lashed out at the UK’s “act of total weakness”, which he said would have been noted by China and Russia.

UK approves plans for Chinese embassy after debate over security risks

The UK has approved China’s plans for a huge new embassy in central London, despite
opponents warning it could be used as a base for spying and pose security risks.

Security Minister Dan Jarvis said intelligence agencies had been “integral” to the process and he was “content any risks are being appropriately managed”.
The decision, which has repeatedly been delayed, had posed a challenge for the government, as it seeks to balance its desire for closer ties with Beijing with warnings of the threat posed by China.

It comes as Sir Keir Starmer is expected to visit Beijing early this year, becoming
the first UK prime minister to do so since 2018.

In a letter, the housing department confirmed that Housing Secretary Steve Reed, who is responsible for planning policy, had given permission for the development to go ahead, subject to certain conditions.

The site at Royal Mint Court is close to the City of London and fibre optic cables that carry vast quantities of highly sensitive data, sparking concerns they could be used by China to infiltrate the UK’s financial system.

However, in its decision letter, the department said there was no suggestion the use of the site as an embassy would interfere with the cables.
It added that no bodies with responsibility for national security, including the Home Office and the Foreign Office, had raised concerns or objected to the proposal on the basis of the proximity of the cables.

Jarvis told MPs the government had “acted to increase the resilience of cables in the area through an extensive series of measures to  protect sensitive data”. The minister argued that the development brought “clear national security advantages”, by consolidating China’s diplomatic premises from seven sites into a single location.
