Rapper and outgoing President of the University of Ghana Student Representative Council (UGSRC), Maradona Yeboah Adjei, popularly known as Guru, has stated that his time in student leadership has equipped him with the skills and experience needed to take on national leadership roles in the future.

In an interview on Okay FM, Guru emphasised the importance of education and practical experience in preparing individuals for higher responsibilities.

“If you want to venture into a new business, job, or leadership role, you must first prove that you understand the work and are capable of doing it. Experience is equally vital. That’s why people go to school before applying for jobs, to demonstrate that they can deliver,” he explained.

Guru highlighted that many of Ghana’s political leaders, including presidents, ministers, and members of parliament, began their leadership journeys in student politics. He believes that serving as SRC president at the University of Ghana offers valuable exposure to governance and public service.

“From what we’ve seen, anyone who can successfully serve as SRC President of the University of Ghana can lead Ghana at any time. Most of our MPs and ministers were deeply involved in student politics, which is why they excel at their duties; they built their experience from there,” he said.

Reflecting on his own journey, Guru noted that the role had taught him crucial lessons in patience, tolerance, and effective leadership.

“Becoming SRC President has helped me understand endurance, tolerance, and the process of leadership,” he shared.

Court Gives Nnamdi Kanu Last Chance To Enter Defence Or Forfeit It

IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu in court

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted the last opportunity to the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to either enter a defence in his ongoing alleged terrorism trial or be foreclosed.

At the resumed hearing on Wednesday, Justice Omotosho said it was his duty as a judge in the case to accord the defendant sufficient opportunity to put in his defence.

The judge spoke while ruling on an application by the prosecuting lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, that the court should foreclose Kanu, who failed to enter his defence having spent five out of the six days the court allocated to him to conduct his defence.

Awomolo had noted that the court had on Tuesday, adjourned till Wednesday for Kanu to enter a defence in his trial or be deemed to have waived his right to do so.

He further noted that at the resumption of proceedings on Wednesday, Kanu still declined to open his defence as ordered by the court.

Awomolo urged the court to take note of the defendant’s position that he would not enter any defence because there is no valid charge against him.

He then prayed the court to foreclose the defendant and adjourn for judgment.

Earlier, Kanu, who represented himself, addressed the court from the dock. He maintained his position that there is no valid charge against him to warrant his being called to enter a defence.

Your’re misleading Nigerians, we’ll resume strike –ASUU to Education Minister

0
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa

The University of Jos branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has accused the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, of issuing “misleading statements” regarding the Federal Government’s fulfilment of agreements with university workers.

In a statement by the branch chairperson, Prof Jurbe Joseph Molwus, the union warned that it may resume its suspended strike if the issues remain unresolved within the next two weeks.

ASUU recalled that it had on October 22, 2025, issued a four-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to meet its outstanding demands or risk a total strike.

The university teachers said that two weeks after the ultimatum, “not much progress has been recorded,” as they are yet to receive their withheld salaries, wage award arrears, and other entitlements.

“As we mobilise for our National Executive Council, NEC meeting scheduled for November 8–9, we expect that outstanding entitlements such as the 3.5 months withheld salaries, 25/35 per cent wage award arrears, promotion arrears, and unpaid salaries of some members would have been paid by now.

“But all we get are press releases from the Honourable Minister of Education. What we need are credit alerts, not misleading statements,” the statement read.

The union also expressed concern that the N50 billion Revitalisation Fund, which the government claimed to have released weeks ago, has not reached any university.

Reacting to the minister’s claim that the government had disbursed N2.3 billion to clear salary and promotion arrears across federal universities, ASUU dismissed the statement as “false and embarrassing,” saying the amount could barely cover the needs of three universities.

President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of John Nwabueze as Nigeria’s first Tax Ombudsman.

The Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced the appointment in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

Onanuga stated that the appointment was in line with the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2025.

According to him, the appointment was part of Tinubu’s government’s wider agenda to improve accountability, fairness, and confidence in the Nigeria’s tax and revenue system.

DAILY POST reports that until his appointment, Nwabueze served as Managing Partner of a leading tax advisory firm and previously worked as Technical Adviser to the Joint Senate Committees on the Federal Capital Territory and Finance, as well as Technical Adviser to the Chief Economic Adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

While congratulating Nwabueze, the president said he was confident in his ability to execute the role with integrity, diligence, and professionalism.

DAILY POST reports that the Office of the Tax Ombudsman, newly established under the Act, is designed to provide an independent channel for taxpayers to resolve disputes with tax and revenue authorities.

The office will also handle complaints related to taxes, levies, customs duties, excise, regulatory fees, and other fiscal matters.

“The office will offer a structured mechanism for fair and impartial dispute resolution, ensuring redress against arbitrary or abusive conduct by tax officials and improving efficiency in managing disputes.

“The creation of the Tax Ombudsman is viewed as a major step toward strengthening taxpayer confidence, improving Nigeria’s tax culture, and supporting the administration’s push to expand revenue collection without imposing undue burden on citizens or businesses,” the statement said. The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced plans to introduce a Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP) to replace the existing Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC) for Nigerians abroad.

The Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap, said the new document forms part of the agency’s ongoing reforms to strengthen identity management and border governance in line with global best practices.

She made the announcement while speaking at the Joint Thematic Meeting of the Khartoum, Rabat, and Niamey Processes, co-hosted by Nigeria in collaboration with the Government of France.

The meeting brought together key migration stakeholders, including the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), ECOWAS, AU, EU, and representatives from African and European countries.

According to Nandap, the STEP initiative will serve as a secure and verifiable temporary travel document for Nigerians abroad whose passports have expired, been lost, or been stolen.

She explained that the passport will be issued at designated Nigerian embassies and consulates and will be valid for a single entry into Nigeria.

“The forthcoming Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP) will enable Nigerians abroad to return home safely in a secure and verifiable manner,” the Immigration Chief stated, adding that the initiative underscores the Service’s commitment to efficient service delivery and robust identity protection.

In her keynote address titled “Insights on Prevention and Protection as Strategic Pillars to Effective Law Enforcement and Prosecution Responses,” Nandap also highlighted the Service’s broader reform agenda, which focuses on combating migrant smuggling and human trafficking through enhanced border governance, improved migration management systems, capacity building, and strengthened international collaboration.

The Comptroller-General reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to regional and global migration dialogues.

Flames rise as a fire burns at a retirement home

The death toll from a fire at a retirement home in Tuzla in northern Bosnia-Herzegovina rose to 11 on Wednesday and about 30 people were injured, police said.

The blaze engulfed the seventh floor of the old nine-story building at around 8:45 p.m. local time (2:45 p.m. ET) on Tuesday, sending flames and smoke pouring out of the top floors into the night sky. The cause was not immediately clear.

Local media said many of the dead had disabilities and those rescued were moved by emergency crews from the upper floors to lower ones. Some of the injured were in critical condition.

Identification of the victims will start later on Wednesday, and an investigation into the cause of the fire will start once conditions allow it, police said. “Authorities are taking all necessary actions to shed light on the conditions that caused this tragic event,” the retirement home said in a statement.

The government of Republika Srpska, the Serb Republic, one of the two entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, offered its assistance to Tuzla.

At least seven killed in UPS cargo plane crash at Louisville airport in US

Smoke rises from the wreckage of a UPS MD-11 cargo jet

At least seven people were killed when a large, wide-body UPS cargo plane crashed while taking off from an airport in Louisville, Kentucky, igniting an enormous fire and causing “multiple injuries” on the ground, authorities said.

UPS Flight 2976 crashed at about 5:15pm local time (22:15 GMT) on Tuesday as it was departing from Louisville’s Muhammad Ali airport, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a statement.

UPS said in an initial statement that three crew members were on board the aircraft, but provided no information as to any casualties or injuries.

The Associated Press news agency said that four of the seven people confirmed killed were not on board the aircraft.

“Anybody who has seen the images, the video, knows how violent this crash is,” Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said after earlier telling a news conference that three people were confirmed killed and the death toll was expected to rise.

“We have at least 11 injuries, some of them very significant, that are being treated by local hospitals. Again, I think that number will get larger,” Beshear said.

Beshear also said that the National Transportation Safety Board will launch an investigation into the crash, assisted by the FAA.

Aerial footage of the crash site showed a long trail of debris as firefighters blasted water onto a huge fire, with smoke billowing from the disaster area.

Beshear said the plane crashed directly into two local businesses – a petroleum recycling company and an auto parts company.

Louisville Metro Police Department said in a post on social media that a “shelter-in-place” notice was issued for all locations within an 8km (5-mile) radius of the airport.

Government shutdown becomes longest in US history

0
US government shutdown

The US government shutdown has entered its 36th day, making it the longest period of time the American government has been closed.

The shutdown, which began 1 October, was prompted by the inability of Congress to agree to a new funding deal. It has left government workers without paycheque and millions of Americans without essential services.

Democrats and Republicans have remained gridlocked for weeks without any signs of a compromise – though some glimmers of hope are beginning to show.

Majority Leader John Thune, the Senate’s top Republican, said his “gut” told him that a possible breakthrough might be on the horizon.

“I just think, based on, sort of, my gut of how these things operate, I think we’re getting close to an off-ramp here,” Thune said.

The previous government shutdown record happened during Donald Trump’s first term as president and lasted 35 days before it ended in 2019.

In the weeks since this shutdown started, the impacts on everyday Americans has worsened.

Thousands of federal workers have already missed pay cheques, and there are growing fears of increased impacts to air travel across the US as air traffic controllers and airport staff work without pay.

On Tuesday, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told Fox News that some areas of US airspace might have to be closed if the government shutdown continues. About 13,000 air traffic controllers, who are government employees, have been working without pay due to the shutdown.

Israel says Hamas returned body of Israeli-US soldier held hostage

Body of Israeli-US soldier held hostage returned

Israel has confirmed the latest body of a hostage returned by Hamas via the Red Cross is that of Israeli-American soldier Itay Chen.

The 19-year-old’s remains were handed over on Tuesday as part of a Gaza ceasefire deal brokered by US President Donald Trump last month.

“Following the completion of the identification process… [Israel Defense Forces] representatives informed the family of the fallen hostage, Staff Sergeant Itay Chen, that their loved one has been returned to Israel and positively identified,” the Israeli prime minister’s office said.

Earlier, Hamas’s military wing said it had recovered the body of an Israeli soldier in the eastern Shejaiya neighbourhood of Gaza City.

Israel had allowed members of the Palestinian armed group and Red Cross staff to search for the remains in the area, which is inside territory still controlled by Israeli forces.

Staff Sgt Chen was serving as a soldier in the IDF’s 7th Brigade when Hamas-led gunmen attacked southern Israel on 7 October 2023.

The IDF said he was killed inside a tank during a battle in Kibbutz Nir Oz and that his body was taken to Gaza as a hostage by Hamas.

“The remains of Itay Chen, a young American taken hostage by Hamas at just 19 years old, have finally returned home. We honour his life, mourn his loss, and stand with his family,” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote on X.

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum in Israel welcomed his return but also stressed that there were seven deceased hostages still in Gaza.

On Wednesday morning, Nasser hospital in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis said it had received the bodies of another 15 dead Palestinians from Israel via the Red Cross.

For each dead Israeli hostage returned, Israel has agreed to hand over the remains of 15 Palestinians. But with no DNA testing available in Gaza, it is hard to identify them.

Understanding Hair Loss: The Basics

0

What Is Hair Loss?

Hair loss can happen to anyone. Your genes, certain medical conditions, treatments for disease, and other factors can contribute to partial or, sometimes, total hair loss — not just on your head but on other parts of your body as well. Just as the types and causes of hair loss vary, so do the reactions of the many people who experience it.

Doctors don’t know why certain hair follicles are programmed to have a shorter growth period than others. But several factors may influence hair loss, such as:

Hormones. Hormonal imbalance, such as abnormal levels of androgens (male hormones normally produced by both men and women), may lead to hair loss.

Genes. Genes from both male and female parents may influence a person’s predisposition to male or female pattern baldness.

Stress, illness, and childbirth. These can cause temporary hair loss. Ringworm, caused by a fungal infection, can also cause hair loss.

Drugs. Drugs, including chemotherapy drugs used in cancer treatment, blood thinners, beta-adrenergic blockers used to control blood pressure, and birth control pills, can cause temporary hair loss.

Burns, injuries, and X-rays. These can cause temporary hair loss. In such cases, normal hair growth usually returns once the injury heals, unless a scar is produced. Then, hair will never regrow.

Autoimmune disease. This may cause alopecia areata. In alopecia areata, the immune system becomes more active for unknown reasons and affects the hair follicles. In most people with alopecia areata, the hair grows back, although it may temporarily be very fine and possibly a lighter color before normal coloration and thickness return.

Cosmetic procedures. Procedures such as shampooing too often, perms, bleaching, and dyeing hair can contribute to overall hair thinning by making hair weak and brittle. Tight braiding, using rollers or hot curlers, and running hair picks through tight curls can also damage and break hair. But these procedures don’t cause baldness. In most cases, hair grows back normally if the source of the problem is addressed. Still, severe damage to the hair or scalp sometimes causes permanent bald patches.

Medical conditions. Thyroid disease, lupus, diabetes, iron deficiency anemia, eating disorders, and anemia can cause hair loss. Most times, when the underlying condition is treated, the hair will return unless there is scarring as in some forms of lupus, lichen planus, or follicular disorders.

Diet. A low-protein diet or severely calorie-restricted diet can also cause temporary hair loss.

Vitamin deficiencies. Deficiencies in vitamins A, B, C, D, and E, as well as iron and zinc, have been associated with hair loss.

Signs of Hair Loss

Hair loss can be subtle and happen over a long period; it also can occur suddenly. The signs of hair loss depend on its causes and so does how you perceive your hair loss. These signs include:

Gradual thinning of hair on the top of your head. This occurs as a result of pattern baldness, the most common type of hair loss. In men and people assigned male at birth (AMAB), this thinning typically begins at the hairline. In women and people assigned female at birth (AFAB), the thinning frequently occurs where they part their hair, but their hair also commonly thins at the hairline.

Sudden hair loss, rather than gradual thinning, also can occur for a variety of reasons, such as alopecia areata and medical treatments, such as chemotherapy.

Patchy bald spots (which are often round or oval in shape) are signs of alopecia areata, which can develop suddenly. Such patches may be large or small, and they can develop on your beard, eyelashes, and eyebrows. Most of the time, alopecia areata does not cause widespread hair loss over your entire head. But it’s possible to lose all the hair on your head and, very rarely, the rest of your body.

Shedding, which can cause your hair to thin, can occur a few months after stressful or hormone-altering events, such as childbirth, illness, a divorce, or the death of a loved one. Some medications and nutritional deficiencies also may be to blame for this condition called telogen effluvium. You’ll likely notice a greater than normal amount of hair in your brush as your hair rapidly sheds.

Losing all the hair on your body can happen due to chemotherapy. The hair usually grows back after treatment ends.
