US Vice President on peace-seeking mission in Paris

US Vice President Kamala Harris

US Vice President Kamala Harris kicks off a four-day visit to Paris on Tuesday, attending a conference on Libya and a peace forum. But the trip is also aimed at mending fences with France following the bitter diplomatic row over the US-Australia submarine deal which left the Franco-US friendship in tatters.

Harris will hold four days of meetings in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron and other world leaders, delivering remarks at a peace forum and taking part in a multilateral conference on Libya.

The schedule includes a one-on-one sit-down with Macron on Wednesday where Harris will take up President Joe Biden’s recent overtures aimed at restoring ties strained by the AUKUS submarine deal

Biden told Macron last week he had been “clumsy” in keeping France out of the loop on a US-Australian deal on nuclear-powered submarines, a move that prompted France to take the highly unusual step of temporarily recalling its ambassador in Washington.

The deal undercut an agreement worth more than 56 billion euros struck by a French defense contractor to sell diesel-powered submarines to Australia.

Zlatan jokes of ‘old body and young mind’ ; ahead of Sweden return

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Veteran striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic said on Monday he felt great to be back from injury “at last” for Sweden’s upcoming 2022 World Cup qualifiers after being ruled out of Euro 2020.

The AC Milan forward retired from international football five years ago but announced a comeback ahead of the European Championship.

He only managed two appearances in World Cup qualifying in March before injury prevented him from playing at the Euro.

“It feels good to be back at last,” said the 40-year-old ahead of crucial games against Georgia on Thursday and Spain three days later.

“It was tough, but being honest, I just wasn’t 100 per cent.”

Ibrahimovic, who has scored 62 international goals in 118 matches, said he was ready to play whatever amount of time coach Janne Andersson asked him to.

“I shouldn’t push it after my injuries but everybody wants to play.

“I’m getting older but I understand my body better now. It’s older even if my mind is younger and I’m getting better looking.

“It all depends on what Janne wants, I’m here as a member of the squad.”

Sweden lead qualifying group B with 15 points, two ahead of Spain, with Greece third on nine points.

The group winners automatically reach next year’s World Cup in Qatar and Sweden’s final qualifier against Spain in Seville could be a winner-takes-all clash.

Pogba leaves France camp with thigh injury

Paul Pogba

Midfielder Paul Pogba has been ruled out of France’s World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Finland after suffering a right thigh injury, the French federation (FFF) said on Monday.

The Manchester United player was seen leaving Monday’s training session with team doctor Franck Le Gall.

“Paul Pogba is forced to withdraw from France’s next two games at the Parc des Princes against Kazakhstan and against Finland in Helsinki,” the statement read.

He is being replaced in the squad by AS Roma’s Jordan Veretout.

France are top of their qualifying Group D with 12 points from six games and victory against Kazakhstan will secure them a place in next year’s World Cup finals.

Coach Didier Deschamps, however, warned against complacency as the world champions take on a side who have not won any of their seven group games.

“The important thing is to reach our goal, to qualify for the World Cup. All my energy and our concentration must be on that,” Deschamps told a news conference.

“We must not think that we are already qualified because it is only Kazakhstan. We’re going into the game with all our determination and strength to win.”

France will also travel to Finland next Tuesday.

Mancini calls for Italy calm ahead of crunch Switzerland clash

Roberto Mancini

Italy must remain calm in their preparation for Friday’s crucial Fifa World Cup qualifier against Switzerland but they will be without injured pair Lorenzo Pellegrini and Nicolo Zaniolo for the match, Azzurri coach Roberto Mancini said on Monday.

The European champions are level with the Swiss on 14 points at the top of group C, but sit in first place on goal difference, ahead of their meeting at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico.

The winners will therefore be in pole position to secure an automatic qualification spot for Qatar 2022 with one game left, and the two sides could not be split during a 0-0 draw in Basle in September.

The losers will likely have to settle for a playoff spot, a frightening prospect for Italy after their embarrassing playoff defeat by Sweden during 2018 World Cup qualifying.

“We must be calm in our preparation for this important game,” Mancini told a news conference.

“Games against Switzerland are always difficult and it will be on Friday too. If we play like we did in the first game, we can get a great result, but I believe we can do even better than that. It will be an important match, so you can’t prepare for it with tension.”

Mancini revealed that Pellegrini and Zaniolo have been sent home from camp with physical problems, while midfielder Nicolo Barella will be monitored after picking up a knock.

The Italy squad is largely made up of the same players who triumphed at Euro 2020 in July, but Torino midfielder Tommaso Pobega earned his first call-up.

The Leicester City man is expected to lead Ghana’s backline from central defence, most likely with support from Strasbourg’s Alex Djiku, and Reading fullbacks Andy Yiadom and Baba Rahman.

THOMAS PARTEY

Thomas Partey

Uncertainty hangs over the availability of the Arsenal ace for the upcoming double-header, having sat out his club’s 1-0 Premier League win over Watford on Sunday due to a groin problem. Should he be passed fit for the Ghana games, he will undoubtedly be the main man in midfield.

MOHAMMED KUDUS

Mohammed Kudus

In what will most likely be a midfield trio with Arsenal’s Thomas Partey and Real Mallorca’s Iddrisu Baba, the Ajax sensation will look to show his creative ability and goal scoring prowess once again as he has done in the qualifiers so far.

KAMALDEEN SULEMANA

Kamaldeen Sulemana

The 19-year-old winger, perhaps, Ghana’s most dangerous player at the moment, and following his fine form at club level, will hope to fetch his first goal for the Black Stars against the Walias.

ANDRE AYEW

Andre Ayew

The former Swansea City man is enjoying a purple patch of form at club level, having registered seven goals in nine league matches for Qatari side Al Sadd so far this season. Just as he scored against Zimbabwe last month, the Black Stars captain will hope to spur his team on to victory on Thursday.

There were two black hoods, two pairs of scissors and a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis also in the car, the Director-General said.

The President is in the country for the swearing-in ceremony of Jose Maria Neves, President-elect of Cape Verde.

President Akufo-Addo is attending the swearing-in ceremony, which is taking place today, in his capacity as the Chairperson of the Authority of Heads of States and Governments of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The President would return to Ghana today after attending the investiture of President-elect Jose Maria Neves.

In his absence, the Vice President, Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, would act in his place in accordance with the law.

McDonald’s in Ghana

Several investors have expressed interest in setting up businesses in Ghana, and among them is the American fast-food company, McDonald’s.

McDonald’s was founded in 1940 as a restaurant operated by Richard and Maurice McDonald in San Bernardino, California, United States.

Yesterday, a delegation from the diaspora, led by the Grow Unite Build Africa (GUBA), a Ghana UK-based Achievement awards organisation, visited President Akufo-Addo at Jubilee House ahead of this year’s awards ceremony held.

The leader of the delegation, Dentaa Amoateng, Founder of GUBA, in her remarks, told the President that some investors had come to Ghana for the awards, and to also start the process of setting up businesses.

She said: “…wants to bring McDonalds to Ghana. Madam here wants to build a relationship between Ghana and Panama and is thinking about having a consular office as well. And then also, they will do affordable housing, so they are going to meet Hon Asenso as well.”

The Chief Executive of the Ghana Free Zones would also be met with as part of the visit.

The people who met the President took turns introducing themselves, during which some stated the kind of investment they were bringing to Ghana, while all of them gave good remarks about the country.

The delegation included members of the United Kingdom Parliament, some of whom were of Ghanaian descent.

They had visited the Presidency to greet him and inform him of their participation in this year’s GUBA award, which was celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Yaa Asantewaa.

The President, in his brief remarks, he was happy to see the delegation and how diverse it was; comprising people whose lineages were here in Ghana.

The President, who was excited by the idea of Ghanaians in the diaspora coming back home, recalled how the Year of Return initiative some two years ago gave such an opportunity.

According to him, it was necessary that joint work be done to reaffirm the bonds between those in Ghana and the diaspora.

My presence was a duty Prez to Bawumia and Family

The Vice President, Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, and his family have expressed gratitude to President Akufo-Addo for his role in the funeral of the mother of his vice.

Yesterday, a family delegation sent by the Nayiri paid a courtesy call on President Akufo-Addo at Jubilee House to say thank you, a gesture President Akufo-Addo described as customary.

MY DUTY

Briefly responding to the words of appreciation from the delegation, President Akufo-Addo said the messages were appropriate.

He stated that as Ghanaians, the customs were the same regardless of where one was coming from, describing them as sacred.

“My presence at the funeral was, for me, a duty. The lady was like a mother to us. She treated me impeccably the few times I got to know her at the latter stages of her life. I cannot complain at all about the treatment I received. So, it was important for me to also express my appreciation for the way she was with me and her son,” the President said.

According to the President, he was happy the woman got a burial befitting of her, especially for producing a Vice President for the country.

SINCERE APPRECIATION, NAYIRI

A Senior Elder of the Overlord of Mamprugu Traditional Area, Mba Tarana John Gumah, led the delegation, which included the Vice President.

In his address, he told the President, after introducing the entourage, that they had come to express the Nayiri’s sincere appreciation to him for making time to join the family for the funeral of the late Hajia Mariama Bawumia.

Mr. John Gumah told the President that his presence made the funeral unique, showing that he had “great concern and committed to Mamprugu and to the Vice President. You were mourning with him at the time he was mourning, so you had time to come [to the funeral]. ”

Going back to the olden days, the leader of the delegation said that they had to journey in person to see if the President arrived safely.

He explained that when there was no technological means of communication in the days past, people had to be sent to see if guests arrived home peacefully.

“So, we are here, as tradition and custom demand, first of all to see that you arrived, and to thank you so much… and the Nayiri is very grateful,” he stated.

The mother of the Vice President kicked the bucket on Monday, September 13, 2021, and the final funeral rites took place on Sunday, October 24, 2021 at Walewale.

PERISCOPE: CURE FOR WORRY (3)

0

The very best prescription for banishing worry is found in Psalm 37:5: “Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in Him and he shall bring it to pass”, the word ‘commit’ means, to turn over to, to entrust completely.

“Some years ago, someone gave my little boy a dollar. He brought it to me and said: ‘Daddy, keep this for me’. But in a few minutes, he came back and said, ‘Daddy, I’d better keep my own dollar.’ He tucked it in his pocket and went out to play. A short time later, he came back with tears in his eyes, saying, ‘Daddy, l lost my dollar. Help me find it.”

“How often we commit our burdens to the Lord and then fail to trust Him, by taking matters into our own hands. Then, when we have messed things up, we pray, ‘Oh Lord, help me, l am in trouble.’

Do we doubt God?

Remember now, the three steps are these: First, commit your way into the Lord; second, Trust it with Him, and third, He shall bring it to pass. This is another way of saying, ‘Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there”.

“I know that modern living taxes the faith of the greatest Christians, but none of us should doubt the ability of God to give us grace sufficient for our trials, even amid the stresses of this twentieth century.

“In the middle of our world troubles, the Christian is not to go about wringing his hands, shouting, ‘what shall we do?’ Having more nervous tension and worry than anyone else.

“The Christian is to trust quietly that God is still on the Throne. He is a Sovereign God, working out things according to His own plan.

“The scriptures today are being fulfilled, and if things were any different, we would be concerned. Christ predicted in the twenty fourth chapter of Matthew that all these things would come to pass.

Personal Peace

“Some section hands on a British railroad found a thrush’s nest under a rail and the hen peacefully sitting on the eggs, undisturbed by the roar of the fast trains above  and around her. The Bible says: ‘Thou will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee’.

Believe me, God’s grace is more than adequate for these times.

I am learning in my own life, day by day, to keep my mind centred on Christ and the worries and anxieties and concerns  of the world pass away and nothing but ‘perfect peace’ is left in the human heart.

God has taken the responsibility for our care and worry. Who of us has not asked in times of affliction and difficulty – does God care for me?

The Psalmist voided the sentiments of many of us, when he said: “…refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul’. (Psalm 42:4).

“Martha, over concerned with her workday duties, said to Jesus: ‘Lord, dost Thou not care? How many faithful loving mothers, overwhelmed by the burdens of Motherhood have cried anxiously ‘Lord, don’t you care?’ The disciples, tossed by the turbulent sea cried: “Carest Thou not that we perish?’

“That question is, forever, answered in those reassuring words of Peter ‘He careth for you’. This is the word of God and the world will pass away, before it can be altered.

You can be positively assured that God does care for you and if God cares for you and has promised to carry your burdens and cares, then nothing should distress you.

And Example of Trusting

“The story is told of a little girl, who was crossing the Atlantic for the first time in an Airliner on which her father was the pilot. During the night, they hit some turbulent air. The stewardess awakened her and told her to fasten her seat belt, because they were in a bad storm.

“The little girl opened her eyes, saw the lighting flashing about the plane and said, ‘ Is Daddy at the controls?’ The stewardess replied, ‘Yes, your father is in the cockpit’. The little girl smiled, closed her eyes and went peacefully back to sleep.

“God is in the cockpit. God is piloting our lives. We can have peace and joy in the midst of the troubles and anxieties of life, if we put our trust in Him. But the questions I want to ask you, who are harassed by worry and anxiety are these: Are you a child of God? Are you in Christ? Have you put your life in His hands? If you haven’t, then your fears and difficulties are justified, for there is no security here or thereafter without him.

Put first things first

“We must cast our sins on Christ before we are eligible to cast our cares upon Him. We must first say, ‘Forgive us our sins’ before we can pray, ‘deliver us from evil’. This is the divine order. We must be in Christ before we can cast our burdens upon Him.”

The Bible says, ‘Jesus Christ, the same yesterday and today and forever’ (Hebrews 13:3). He is the Saviour of our yesterdays, forgiving and absolving our guilty past.

“He is the Christ of today, sharing our griefs and bearing our burdens. He is the Christ of the Future, Our Alpha and Omega, our joyous beginning and our glorious crowning.

“Do not look sorrowfully in the past; it comes not again. Wisely, improve the present by committing your sin and your burden to the Saviour. Then, with Him, go forth to meet the Future with Trust; because His the God of the Future.

My Decision

“Believing that the Lord Jesus Christ died on the Cross for me and is now living. I want this to be my ‘Hour of Decision’.

Acknowledging that, l am a sinner, l receive Jesus as my personal Saviour and will trust Him, rely upon him and adhere to Him as my Lord”.

The sermon ends today and, dear precious readers, hankering after the spiritual food of salvation, thank you for reading  Christian beliefs  and convictions of one of the renowned global personalities of God, the late Billy Graham (May his soul rest in peace in the serene bosom of our Heavenly Father).

May his rich Sermon impact positively on us, while on the Highways of this ephemeral life to the unknown, realising that The Gracious, The Omniscient, The Omnipotent and The Omnipresent God is always at hand to dry our falling tears of despair and desperation.
