The yet-to-be completed Sofoline Interchange in the Kwadaso Municipality of the Ashanti Region has been turned into vehicle show rooms, where second hand automobiles are on sale.

Unlike the Asokwa Interchange area, which has beautiful green scenery, same cannot be said about the interchange in question, which has taken political leaders more than a to complete.

On a working visit to the Sofoline Interchange recently, The Chronicle observed that car dealers had pitched camp, and had adornd their respective areas with white chippings.

Metallic poles and wire mesh have been used to cordon off these showrooms, which are some metres away from the pavements, as hundreds of second hand cars are parked on the interchange, looking for buyers.

The activities of the automobile dealers have created security concern, in that drivers and pedestrians could barely see ahead of them clearly, especially when they are negotiating a curve on the interchange.

Reached on phone about this development, Richmond Agyenim Boateng, Municipal Chief Executive, confirmed to The Chronicle that there had been such developments on the interchange.

According to Agyenim Boateng, the Kwadaso Assembly had not sanction car dealers to sell their vehicles on the Sofoline Interchange, adding that these car dealers had invaded the said space, and that they have been served with a letter ordering them to vacate the place.

While on the visit, The Chronicle visited three car dealers, who were tight-lipped about their businesses on the authority of the Kwadaso Municipal Assembly.

He noted that to achieve herd immunity against the infection, Nigeria had set an ambitious goal of vaccinating 40 per cent of its over 200 million population before the end of 2021, and 70 per cent by the end of 2022.

“To achieve this, the vaccine roll-out was scheduled to be in four phases, starting with health workers, frontline workers, COVID-19 rapid response team, amongst others.

“The second phase has commenced and it’s capturing older adults, aged 50 years and above, and those aged between 18 and 49 years of age,” he explained.

Elsie Ilori, Director of Disease Surveillance Department, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), while giving an update on the Nigeria’s COVID-19 situation, said that while progress had been made in response to the ongoing pandemic with the fact-paced development of diagnostic, therapeutic, and vaccines globally, variants of concern with increased transmissibility pose a threat.

The meeting of the Board ongoing

The National Food Buffer Stock Company Limited (NAFCO) has put in place a 5-year Strategic Plan to scale up operational efficiency and also enhance its businesses to ensure all-round growth.

At a 3-day Board and Management retreat held last month at the behest of Henry Nana Boakye ESQ (Board Chairman) and Mr. Hanan Abdul-Wahab (CEO), the board had extensive engagement with experts and stakeholders to draft the much responsive and relevant five year Strategic Plan. It is expected that the 5 Year Strategic Plan will enable NAFCO to function well and more importantly perform its mandate in excellence.

NAFCO was incorporated under the Companies Code of Ghana, 1963, Act 179 on 11th March 2010. It is a limited liability company, wholly owned by the Government of Ghana with the mandate to guarantee an assured income to farmers by providing a minimum guaranteed price and ready market: to mop up excess produce from all farmers in order to reduce post-harvest losses resulting from spoilage due to poor storage, thereby protecting farm incomes.

NAFCO has since remained a delicate state establishment in promoting food security in Ghana. It will be recalled that in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and its attendant lockdown, NAFCO played a critical role in government’s provision of cooked and dry foods to hundreds of thousands of vulnerable Ghanaians.

Also, NAFCO has significantly contributed to the successful implementation of government’s flagship program, Free SHS, specifically, in the area of feeding of 1.2 million pupils daily. NAFCO also purchase, sell, preserve and distribute food stuffs produced in the country ostensibly to ensure stability in demand and supply.

Stakeholders present at the meeting were the Parliamentary Select Committee on Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs led by Hon. John Osei-Frimpong (MP for Abirem), Hon Emmanuel Anhwere and Hon Dr Seidu Jasaw; Hon. Joseph Cudjoe (Minister of Public Enterprise); Hon. Gifty Twum Ampofo (Deputy Minister of Education); Hon. Asamoah Boateng (CEO of State Interests and Governance Authority) and Mr Asante Krobea from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

Alhaji Yahaya Cessey, the Chief Imam of Wangara Mosque in Obuasi, has joined a Muslim youth group, called “Ken Ken to Ken Ken Parliament” to campaign against Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgender, Queer and Intersex (LGBTQI+) practices in the country.

Speaking at a colourful ceremony to mark the birth of Prophet Muhammad, known as Mawlid, Alhaji Cessey called on well-meaning Ghanaians to stand up in unity against the practice, irrespective of their religious background or tribe.

He suggested that Ghanaians must fiercely resist the practice and fight against LGBTQI+ since the act has the tendency to destroy the significant gains the country has made over the years.

The Muslim Cleric, referring to the biblical Sodom and Gomorrah incident, reminded Ghanaians of the consequences of same-sex relationships, which invoked God’s wrath resulting in the destruction of the two towns.

Alhaji Yahaya Cessey cautioned that imminent calamity could befall any society that accepts LGBTQI+.

He commended the eight Parliamentarians who in August 2021jointly submitted a private member’s bill to push for the criminalisation of LGBTQ+ activities in the country. The proponents also wanted the promotion, advocacy, funding and acts of homosexuality to be forbidden in the country.

Reflecting on the birth of Prophet Mohammed, the Cleric said the Qur’an had described Prophet Muhammad as the most noble and pious human being, sent as a blessing to the world, hence Muslim all over the world should emulate his lifestyle.

He, therefore, advised parents to prioritise the education of their children stating that, secular education is key to build the human capacity of the Muslim Youth.

Alhaji Cessey also cautioned the youth against all forms of criminal activities and social vices, including violence, because Islam stands for peace.

MassawuduTahiru, Chairman of the ‘Ken-Ken to Ken- Ken Parliament’, which organised the programme explained that in the 10 years of its existence, the group has contributed in promoting the interest of the Muslim community, especially the youth.

The Chairman revealed that the group has so far constructed Mosques at the Obuasi Government Hospital and the Obuasi Senior High and Technical School, as well as mobilising the youth in  the clean-up of their communities as their corporate social responsibilities.

He stressed that, the time has come for Muslim Youth, especially those in the Zongo Communities, to pursue education to the highest level, adding that most Zongo children had little interest in secular education, but hoped that the group would work to change the status quo.

He called on the Parliamentarians to vote massively for the Anti- LGBTQI+ bill, which has been laid before the House, stressing that there should be no room for such dastardly act to be legalised in Ghana.

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has said that all patrons to events this December would have to show proof of their vaccination before entry.

“We want to keep you and your siblings and your family alive because if we should come together at a particular place, especially indoor events, and we do not put some checks and balances in place, we’re likely to have challenges after December,” the Deputy Tourism Minister, Mark Okraku Mantey, said in an interview on Joy FM.

The Deputy Minister revealed that these requirements are amongst the safety measures to avert a possible spread of Covid-19 during and after the yuletide.

“When you want to go for any event, especially when we’ve launched ‘December in GH’, we’re saying that we’re targeting about 150,000 people entering the country between now and January; we don’t have to go and have fun and come back with Covid-19,” he said.

In addition, persons above the age of five will be mandated to wear nose masks and only take them off should there be the need for eating or drinking.

The Ghana Tourism Authority has sanctioned Afrochella, Rhythms on the Runway, Taste of Ghana, Takoradi Festival, Kwanzaa in Ghana, Diaspora Transition and GUBA awards as events that have the green light from the Authority to come off this December.

Sudan court orders end to internet shutdown

Sudan military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan

A Sudanese court has ruled that internet services cut during a military coup more than two weeks ago must be restored, a lawyer said, as anti-coup protesters continued a civil disobedience campaign.

Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan, reporting from the capital Khartoum, said that internet services had still not returned by Tuesday afternoon.

“Those who are relying on internet from their phone data have not been able to access it since the shutdown during the early hours of October 25,” said Morgan.

She added that the Sudanese people consider the blocking of their ability to express themselves freely a serious infringement on their rights.

The day after the coup, army General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan blamed online media for “instigating sedition” but also promised that “the internet services will gradually return”.

“The ruling by Khartoum district court ordered internet services to be resumed immediately,” lawyer Abdelazim Hassan told the AFP news agency.

The case had been brought by a group of lawyers and the Sudanese consumer protection society.

Mexico anti-money laundering chief resigns amid scandal

0
Mexico President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador

The head of Mexico’s Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), the agency in charge of cracking down on money-laundering operations, has resigned following a scandal related to his wedding in Guatemala.

Santiago Nieto, long seen as a trusted ally of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in his campaign to root out corruption, stepped down from the position on Monday.

That came after Guatemalan authorities seized $35,000 in cash from a private jet carrying influential guests to Nieto’s wedding to Carla Humphrey, a counsellor with Mexico’s National Electoral Institute (INE), in the city of Antigua.

Wedding guest Juan Francisco Ealy Ortiz, the president of the prominent Mexican newspaper El Universal, had been carrying the cash. A column in the newspaper on Monday said the money was for medical treatment and had been properly declared to Mexican officials.

Since taking office, Lopez Obrador has cultivated a persona of obsessive austerity, often flying commercial, trying to sell the presidential jet, and refusing to live in the palatial former presidential residence.

Poland fears armed border escalation by Belarus

Poland, Belarus migrants

Poland has warned of a possible “armed” escalation on its border with Belarus, fearing its neighbour may try to provoke an incident with hundreds of migrants seeking to cross into the EU. Extra troops have been deployed after desperate crowds tried to cut a barbed-wire border fence. Poland, the European Union and Nato say Belarus is orchestrating the problem, a claim denied by its disputed leader.

Poland says it is shutting a major border crossing at Kuznica. As many as 4,000 people are now caught up in the migrant crisis on Poland’s eastern border, officials in Warsaw say. Overnight temperatures at the border have slumped below zero and several people have already died in recent weeks.

EU and Nato members Poland, Lithuania and Latvia have all seen a surge in the number of people trying to enter their countries illegally from Belarus in recent months. Many are young men but they include women and children, largely from the Middle East and Asia.

Activists say they are being used as pawns in a political game between non-EU Belarus, run by authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko, and its neighbours. EU officials complain of a continuing hybrid attack by Belarus.
