Black woman makes history aboard space station

0
Black woman Jessica Watkins

Four astronauts, including the first black woman to join the International Space Station crew, docked their SpaceX capsule at the ISS Wednesday less than 16 hours after blast off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral.

Three of the crew were from Nasa, while the other is from the European Space Agency. Their fully autonomous capsule circled the Earth more than 10 times before docking at 23:37 GMT.

Nasa webcast commentators said the Crew Dragon flight, which docked ahead of schedule, was one of the fastest ever to reach the ISS.

The mission has enabled Nasa astronaut Jessica Watkins to become the first black woman to live and work in space for an extended period.

More than a dozen black Americans, including four black women, have traveled to space – but no women has before been among the 200-odd astronauts serve on board the ISS.

Algeria threatens to halt gas exports to Spain

0
Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algeria president

Algeria has threatened to suspend its gas exports to Spain, the latest twist in a complex triangle of diplomatic tensions between the gas supplier, the gas importer and their shared neighbor Morocco — all against the background of skyrocketing prices driven by Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Spain has been in talks with Morocco about helping the North African kingdom boost its gas supplies. That could possibly be done by allowing Morocco to use processing facilities in Spain that could handle imports by ship of liquified natural gas (LNG), which could come from a variety of suppliers. Gas could then be sent to Morocco via an existing pipeline that crosses the Strait of Gibraltar.

Spain, however, also imports natural gas from Algeria. And Algeria is in the midst of a deep diplomatic freeze with Morocco, with which it shares a land border. Algeria severed ties with Morocco last August. Then it choked off one of Morocco’s sources of gas by switching off a gas pipeline that runs across their shared border.

Morocco has turned to Spain for help in trying to make up the shortfall — a prospect that appears to be raising hackles in Algiers.

Biden to announce $33bn to help Ukraine in war

0
President Biden

President Biden will ask Congress for $33bn (£27bn) in military, economic and humanitarian assistance to support Ukraine “for the next five months”.Mr Biden is due to set out the details on Thursday morning. The package includes more than $20bn in military aid, $8.5bn in economic aid and $3bn in humanitarian aid.

The White House has also proposed making it easier for the US to seize and sell Russian oligarchs’ assets, and transfer their proceeds to Ukraine.

The proposals released on Thursday are a significant ramping up of US aid to Ukraine.

Mr Biden’s first funding request after the war began, which was approved by Congress last month, was less than $14bn. Last week, President Biden authorised a second $800m (£642m) military aid package in as many weeks, as well as $500m (£401m) in direct economic assistance.

The US has moved quickly to help Ukraine since the war began in late February.

UN Secretary-General condemns ‘absurdity’ of war during Ukraine visit

0
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday visited sites of alleged Russian war crimes in Ukraine, decrying war as “an absurdity in the 21st century” and urging Russia to cooperate with an international investigation into suspected atrocities. Making his first visit to Ukraine since Russia launched a full-scale invasion on 24 February, Guterres toured several towns and villages outside Kyiv where Russian forces are accused of killing civilians.

“I imagine my family in one of those houses that is now destroyed and black. I see my granddaughters running away in panic,” the UN chief said in Borodianka, a ruined town north-east of the Ukrainian capital.

“The war is an absurdity in the 21st century. The war is evil,” he added.

In neighbouring Bucha, where dozens of bodies in civilian clothes, some with their hands tied behind their backs, were discovered this month after a Russian withdrawal, Guterres backed an International Criminal Court investigation into possible war crimes in Ukraine.

Pilot smoking cigarette caused 2016 EgyptAir crash -Report

0
EgyptAir

The 2016 crash of EgyptAir flight MS804 from Paris to Cairo, which Egyptian authorities initially described as an act of terrorism, was caused by a pilot smoking a cigarette, an investigation has found.

The jet disappeared in the Mediterranean Sea between Crete and the coast of northern Egypt on May 19, 2016, carrying 66 passengers and crew, all of whom were killed. It took one month to locate the wreckage.

Egyptian investigators initially said they had found traces of explosives in the remains of victims of the flight. Cairo’s prosecutor general ordered an urgent state security investigation, but its findings were never made public.

A confidential 134-page investigation document compiled by French experts and sent to the Paris Court of Appeal now attributes the cause of the crash to the pilots’ cigarette smoking.

According to the report, obtained by Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, the co-pilot’s oxygen mask was left in “emergency” mode instead of “normal” by a maintenance engineer.

The cigarette caused the oxygen to combust, provoking a spark that led to a fire.

Chief whip investigates MP who watched porn in UK Parliament

0
UK Parliament

An investigation has been launched by the government chief whip into reports that a Conservative frontbencher watched pornography on his phone in the Commons chamber.

Female Tory MPs met Chris Heaton-Harris on Monday night to complain about sexism in parliament, with one alleging that a male colleague was watching pornography next to them in the House of Commons.

The group of about 12 to 14 female MPs shared their experiences of sexist behaviour among Tory male MPs, telling Heaton-Harris that something must be done. They also called for action against three cabinet ministers who are reportedly subject to inquiries about inappropriate sexual behaviour.

The MP who raised the issue did not name the male MP but there are reports that he was seen watching porn in both the chamber and a committee meeting.

A spokesperson for the whips said: “The chief whip is looking into this matter. This behaviour is wholly unacceptable and action will be taken.”

It comes following an outcry about misogyny towards the Labour deputy leader, Angela Rayner, after the Mail on Sunday published claims from a Tory MP that accused her of crossing and uncrossing her legs, to distract Boris Johnson at prime minister’s questions.

Rayner has hit out at the false claims.

The Benefits of Malt Extract Beverages

0
Malt

Chocolate malt with banana

The malting process is what converts cereals into malt, which can be easily milled.

Malt benefits include boosting your mood, supplying your body with antioxidants and B vitamins, and improving your bone health. Malt is also a good source of essential amino acids.

Barley is bred for easy processing by producing just the right enzymes for malting. These enzymes convert proteins into amino acids and starch into simple sugars. All of these are useful nutrients and are commonly used in the manufacturing of food and the distilling and brewing of different beverages.

The process of malting uses just clean hot air and fresh water. The result is a plethora of flavors and colors that cannot be produced via synthetic methods. In fact, malting is one of the most popular ways of introducing whole grains into the ingredients of many manufactured foods and beverages, such as Onergy malt, an herbal dietary supplement.

The Malting Process

It all starts with water, according to an article published in the July 2016 issue of the Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety. The barley is immersed in water. The reason why this is considered natural is that it mimics something that happens naturally. When you sow the barley seeds in the ground, they use the water to help them grow. The barley seeds will produce enzymes that generate the nutrients needed to help them grow.

There is an embryo, or germ, inside the barley seed that will eventually become the shoot. There will also be a food source for the embryo to feed on, known as the endosperm or flour. This is the hard part of the seed, and it is very tightly packed and difficult to grind or mill.

The enzymes released by the barley seed soften the endosperm by breaking the hard cell walls that contain the starch and then breaking the starch down into sugar so that it can be used by the growing embryo.

The enzymes released are just enough to fulfill the nutritional needs of the growing embryo. Eventually, a green shoot will emerge from the seed and sprout out of the ground. That shoot will later become the barley plant.

The only difference between the natural growth process and the malting process is that the set of processes that occur during the natural growth process are controlled during the malting process. The idea is to get the barley seeds to release as large a portfolio of enzymes as possible, so they can be used in the next step of the malting process.

The barley seeds are mixed with fresh water and hot air to encourage them to produce a lot of enzymes for the softening of the endosperm without encouraging the growth of the embryo (due to the lack of soil and presence of hot air). These enzymes are very efficient.

They are so good at their job, in fact, that they will not only turn all of the starch in the barley into simple sugars but will go on to break down any other sources of starch that are added to the mix. That is why the malting process commonly involves adding corn and rice to increase the alcohol that could potentially be generated when the fermentation process happens later down the line.

Vitamin B and Amino Acids

Malt extract is a very rich source of vitamin B, and it is known to significantly increase the vitamin B content of the beverages in which it is used, according to a December 2017 study published in the Journal of Food Science and Technology. Vitamin B actually isn’t a single vitamin but is a range of related vitamins collectively known as B vitamins. They include folate, niacin, vitamin B6, riboflavin and thiamine.

The exact amount of the B vitamins may vary depending on the kind of malt beverage you’re consuming. These vitamins are necessary for a variety of processes in your body, including the metabolism of fat, protein and carbs. They also regulate your appetite, keep your skin healthy and improve your vision.

Malt extract is known to be an abundant source of essential amino acids, which are those amino acids that the body cannot synthesize on its own and must obtain from the diet.

Without these essential amino acids, the body would not be able to carry out many of its crucial functions, including muscle growth and repair, neurotransmitter production and hormone production, among others. Multiple systems in human bodies would fail.

There are nine essential amino acids: histidine, leucine, isoleucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. They are mainly obtained from animal products in your diet, such as beef, pork, chicken, eggs and milk, though some of them can also be obtained from plant sources, such as malt extract.

Not all malt extract beverages are good sources of protein. However, nearly all of them can provide you with at least some of these essential amino acids and improve your protein intake.

Bone Health and Malt

Bone health is heavily dependent on good nutrition. While malt extract beverages may not give you all of the nutrients you need to keep your bones healthy, they will certainly help to boost your intake of these nutrients.

Malt drinks often contain magnesium, phosphorus and calcium, which are vital minerals for strong and healthy bones. All three of them are directly used in the main structure of your bones. Magnesium is a structural part of bones and teeth.

Do not use malt extracts to replace a healthy diet by consuming nothing but malt extract foods and beverages. Instead, use them as part of an overall healthy diet so that your body will get all of the nutrients it needs from a wide range of sources.

Even the malt extracts that are often touted as the best source of nutrients still have inadequate amounts of protein, despite having high amounts of sugar. So please don’t fill your diet with Onergy malt; in moderation, it may be helpful, but it’s not essential.

GOD IS WATCHING

0
Rev. Dr. Joyce Rosalind Aryee

“Where could I go from Your Spirit?  Or where could I flee from your presence?  If I ascend up into Heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol (the place of the dead), behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there shall Your hand lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me.” – Ps. 139:7-10 (Amplified Version)

God is Everywhere

The Lord is watching everywhere and keeps His eye on both the evil and the good – Prov. 15:3 (Living Bible).  God is present everywhere and that is why He is called Omnipotent.  Because of this He sees everything, and we ourselves can never be lost to His Spirits.  On the one hand, this is good news because it means that those who have a close relationship with God have the assurance that no matter what we do, no matter where we go, we can never be far from God’s comforting presence as we read in Romans 8:35-39.  It also means that we ourselves can never hide from God.  Nor can we hide any of our actions from Him – He even knows our thoughts – Psalm 44:21.

The knowledge that God is Omnipotent – present everywhere should make us want to do what is right at all times.  The following article story, which I read in a Christian newspaper gives much food for thought.

The Two-way Mirror

I saw the mirror at the back of the drug store but paid little attention to it.  I made my purchase and left.   Later, the son of the Pharmacist, a personal acquaintance of mine, told me about a woman who had a prescription filled in the same drug store.  While she waited, the druggist went into his little back room to prepare the medication.

The woman glanced in the mirror and touched up her hair.  Then she wandered over to the perfume counter.  Being alone and seeing her favourite perfume, she slipped a bottle into her purse.  Few minutes later the pharmacist laid the filled prescription on the counter and named a price.  The woman asked why it was so expensive.  The druggist explained the price of the prescription and added the price of the perfume: “For the bottle you have in your purse.”

Surprised, the woman said: “Oh, I forgot about that!”  That mirror was a two-way one, and the Pharmacist had been watching the woman’s every move.

God is always present, always watching.  He is Omniscient.  He doesn’t need a two-way mirror to know what we are doing.

The Unseen Stealing

A fortune can be made from cheating, but there is a curse that goes with it – Prov. 20:21 (LIVING).  It is quite easy to say: “Well, I wouldn’t take anything that doesn’t belong to me”, but there are other ways of stealing.  Some people think themselves to be upright because they do not break the law.  Yet if they take a little money in a shady deal or slightly misrepresent a product, their character is no better than that of the outright thief.

Concerning any questionable business deal, some businessmen have been known to say: “Well, business is business.”  Everybody does it!  No everybody does it though but the excuse satisfies the unconscionable people.  However, God, who is watching, even though it may be undetected by the customer, sees every shady deal.

There are those who deny it, but gambling may be another way of stealing.  The gambler will tell you it’s his business what he does with his money.  But that statement is questionable if his wife and children have nothing to eat and the rent goes unpaid.

Christians: the World’s Bible

Christians ought to pay all their bills.  Many worldly people judge Christ and His Church by the way professing Christians pay their bills.  If a man is a Christian and his grocer is not, the grocer may feel there is nothing to Christianity when the Christian runs up a bill and never pays.  The outside world does not read the Bible, it reads Christians.

Stealing From God

Then there is the thievery of stealing from God.  This is done by not giving Him His “tithes and offerings” – Malachi 3:8. We must give God what is rightfully His.  There is an old saying – “The love of money is the root of all evil;” but the greatest evil about money is when it is stolen from God.

Jesus: God’s Mirror in Your Heart

A man’s conscience is the Lord’s searchlight exposing his hidden motives – Prov. 20:27 – (Living Bible).  There is a remedy that covers dishonesty – the same remedy applies to all sin – Jesus Christ in the heart is the remedy!  When Jesus truly resides in the heart of the believer, Satan’s temptations are easily overcome.

The woman in the drug store who slipped the perfume in her bag was not accused of doing wrong.  Nor were the police called to arrest her and carry her to jail.  The Pharmacist handled the woman and not wanting to embarrass her and not wanting to lose a customer, he simply asked for his money.  He got it and there is no doubt that the woman was totally honest the next time she entered the store.

The God who is watching handles us wisely.  He provides us with a Saviour – His most effective prescription for sin.  He sees every misdeed through the ‘mirror’ of heaven, but He also hears every confession.  Just as the woman had to pay for the stolen goods, so the unrepentant sinner will be made to pay for every wrongdoing.

Cranberry juice

A new study suggests that consuming whole cranberry powder can support healthy blood flow by mediating artery dilation.

Nutrition Facts

Fresh cranberries are nearly 90% water, but the rest is mostly carbs and fiber.

The main nutrients in 1 cup (100 grams) of raw, unsweetened cranberries are(https://fdc.nal.usda.gov/ndb/) :

  • Calories: 46
  • Water: 87%
  • Protein: 0.4 grams
  • Carbs: 12.2 grams
  • Sugar: 4 grams
  • Fiber: 4.6 grams
  • Fat: 0.1 grams

New Study, Cranberry

A double-blind, randomized, controlled trial  conducted by Heiss et al.(2022) published in Food & Function investigated the vascular effects of freeze-dried whole cranberry consumption in healthy men.The trial involved 45 healthy male adults who were randomly allocated to one month daily consumption of either cranberry (nine grams of cranberry powder in water, providing 525 milligrams total polyphenols) or a control, providing powder with zero polyphenols. Tests on flow-mediated dilation, heart rate, blood pressure, blood lipids and blood glucose were measured at baseline on day one and after one month of consumption.

Researchers found that cranberry consumption significantly increased flow-mediated dilation, or the widening of arteries when blood flow increases. They also noted an increase in plasma and urine polyphenol metabolites.

Although there were no significant changes reported for heart rate and blood pressure, the trial concluded that acute and daily consumption of whole cranberry powder for one month can improve vascular function in healthy men and improve specific metabolite profiles in plasma.

Previous Studies

This adds to existing retrospective human studies by (Ruel et al. 2006; Lee et al.2008;Ruel et al.2008; Basu et al.2011; Dohadwala et al. 2011 and  Simao et al. 2013)  which found that cranberry juice or extracts have proven beneficial for various heart disease risk factors and may help:

  • increasing your levels of HDL (good) cholesterol
  • lowering levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol in people with diabetes
  • protecting LDL (bad) cholesterol from oxidation
  • decreasing stiffness in blood vessels among people with heart disease
  • lowering blood pressure
  • decreasing blood levels of homocysteine, thus cutting your risk of inflammation in blood vessels

Other Cranberry Benefits

Cranberries are one of the top antioxidant foods, and they contain an impressive collection of phytonutrients, including quercetin and anthocyanins. They are also a good source of vitamin C, manganese and other micronutrients.

In addition to their positive effects on vascular health, other cranberry benefits include:

  • Preventing and relieving UTIs
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Fighting free radical damage
  • Reducing the risk of certain cancers, including breast, lung, colon and prostate cancer
  • Boosting immune system function
  • Relieving digestive complaints
  • Reducing bloating
  • Reducing blood pressure
  • Increasing beneficial HDL cholesterol

Cranberry, Stomach Cancer and Ulcers

Cranberries contain unique plant compounds known as A-type proanthocyanidins, which may cut your risk of stomach cancer by preventing H. pylori from attaching to the lining of your stomach( Burger et al.2000; Shmuely et al. 2007; Gotteland et al. 2008;Matsushima et al.2008).

One study in 189 adults suggested that drinking 2.1 cups (500 ml) of cranberry juice daily may significantly reduce H. pylori infections(Zhang et al. 2005).

Another study in 295 children found that daily consumption of cranberry juice for 3 weeks suppressed the growth of H. pylori in about 17% of those infected( Gotteland et al. 2008)

 Cranberry, Urinal Tract Infections

A number of human studies indicate that drinking cranberry juice or taking cranberry supplements may reduce the risk of UTIs in both children and adults(Kontiokari  et al. 2001;Ferrara  et al. 2009; McMurdo et a. 2009; Salo et al. 2011; Afshar et al. 2012).

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses support these findings, especially for women with recurrent UTIs(  Jepson  and Craig, 2008; Wang et al. 2012; Beerepoot et al. 2013)

Despite the positive effect on UTIs, a few studies have not found any significant benefits( Barbosa-Cesnik  et al. 2011; McMurdo et al. 2005; Jepson  et al. 2012).

Notwithstanding, Sánchez-Patán et al. (2012) is of the view that not all cranberry products are effective against UTIs. In fact, proanthocyanidins may be lost during processing, making theminvisible in many products . On the other hand, cranberry supplements which contain enough amounts of A-type proanthocyanidins  may be a useful preventive strategy.Take note that cranberries are not effective for treating infections. They only reduce your risk of getting them in the first place according to studies.

Kidney stones

High consumption of cranberries may increase the risk of kidney stones in predisposed individuals(Brinkley et al. 1981;Terris et al.2001;  Gettman et al.2005). This notwithstanding, human studies have provided conflicting results and the issue requires further research(Terris et al. 2001;  Gettman et al.2005). Vulnerability to developing kidney stones differs between individuals. In most people, cranberries probably do not significantly affect kidney stone formation. However, moderation is key.

Other Cardio Tips

  1. Eat a balanced diet. Opt for healthy, anti-inflammatory foods, and reduce your consumption of sugary, processed and packaged foods. Some of the best choices include fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, herbs and high-quality, organic meats.
  2. Exercise regularly. Moving your body regularly and getting your blood pumping supports cardiovascular health.
  3. Reduce stress. Chronic stress leads to increased cortisol levels, which can cause inflammation and heart-related issues.
  4. Get enough sleep. Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep every night for optimal health.
  5. Don’t smoke. Study  shows that smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease.
  6. Use supplements. Heart-healthy supplements include omega-3 fish oil, coenzyme Q10, curcumin and garlic.

Pochettino, Mbappe ‘100% staying at club

0
Mauricio Pochettino and Kylian Mbappe

Paris St-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino says both he and forward Kylian Mbappe will “100%” be at the club next season. Pochettino’s future has been questioned after his side were knocked out of the Champions League in the last 16.

That speculation comes despite the Argentine leading PSG – who he joined in 2021 – to the Ligue 1 title. France striker Mbappe is out of contract in the summer and has long been linked with a move to Real Madrid.

Asked of the likelihood of him and Mbappe being at Parc des Princes next season, Pochettino said: “100% in both cases. “That is how I feel today. That is what I can say to you today. I can’t say anything else. That is how I feel right now.

“This is football and we never know what might happen. But I have to answer the question based on how I feel today. And that is what I have done.”

However, Pochettino said there have been no official discussions with the club about his future.

“There haven’t been any concrete talks, beyond what is normal in terms of our plans and what we have been doing so far,” he said.

“We have a natural relationship. We communicate depending on the circumstances at the time.

“But the relationship and communication are good. We keep working hard, not just bearing in mind the present, but also with the responsibility in this job which is to think about the future. So that is what we are doing.”
