I already have 11m votes – Atiku says

0
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar

Former Vice president and presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar, says he already has 11 million votes in the kitty ahead of the 2023 general elections.

This, he listed, as one of the reasons the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should give him the presidential ticket.

He stated this when he visited the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) on Thursday, in Abuja, to “solicit the party’s support on his presidential ambition.”

“Under normal circumstances this is a guy who already has 11 million votes in his space. And I think as a party, you should give me the right of passage to use the votes,” he said beating his chest with cheers from supporters who filled the hall at the PDP Secretariat.

Mr Abubakar’s boast comes barely two days after supporters of another aspirant in the APC, Bola Tinubu, said they have secured 14 million votes for him in the South-west alone.

Although he lost out in the 2019 presidential election to President Muhammadu Buhari, Mr Abubakar garnered about 11 million votes in the poll. He did not, however, clarify if he was referring to those votes.

Reports from Nigerian elections , however, show an increase in voter apathy over the past years.

The former vice president admonished the PDP to “provide the right kind of leadership to present a good candidate.”

His call was swiftly followed by “…and I am the best candidate.”

He, however, noted that the PDP practises democracy and asked the NWC to be fair, transparent and credible in producing a flag bearer for the party.

The aspirant repeated his agenda for the country if elected president next year. These plans include uniting the country, tackling insecurity, reviving the economy and devolution of powers.

While he commended the NWC for hard work and excellent leadership, he urged the party to “come out in force and show Nigerians just how much the APC has, and will continue to fail.”

In his remarks, chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu, asked to dismiss the notion that he will work for Mr Abubakar because they are friends.

“I will not work for you. I will work for all the 17 aspirants. It is left to you to convince thee delegates, market and sell yourself to the delegates,” he said.

He said the NWC will remain unbiased and will not take sides but that each aspirant will get the support of the party.

Boko Haram

A soldier, who was arrested for absconding from his duty post to join fighters of the Islamist group, Boko Haram, to raid a town, has committed suicide while he was being transported.

The soldier, Jibrin Biu, a Lance Corporal, attached to the Nigerian Army 159 Battalion in Geidam, under the Nigerian Army 27 Task Force Brigade in Buni Gari, Yobe State, reportedly disappeared for two days before he was tracked and arrested.

A source in the army revealed that the soldier was identified among fighters of the Islamist group last Sunday, as they attacked Geidam, a town in Yobe State.

His commanding officer subsequently tracked his phone and he was pinpointed at a point in Gashua, in the state.

According to sources, including the soldier’s colleagues, a signal was sent to the army base in Gashua and dragnets were spread out for him.

He was arrested at a checkpoint in a commercial bus travelling to Yobe on Tuesday morning.

Following his arrest, he reportedly snatched a gun from a soldier who was transporting him to custody and shot himself dead.

The deceased soldier was said to be in the Intelligence Corps of the army before becoming a weapons instructor. He was believed to be paid by the terror group to teach their members how to use firearms.

The army spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, did not respond to WhatsApp calls and text messages sent to his phone for comments on the incident.

Last September, a similar incident occurred in Yobe when a soldier, Victor Ojeamiran, attached to the Nigerian Army 27 Task Force Brigade in Buni Gari, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, committed suicide he was allegedly false accused of stealing.

The soldier was reportedly punished by his superior in public, while residents of the area shot videos of the punishment and later posted them on some social media platforms.

Mr Ojeamiran shot himself after he personally submitted a note to his platoon sergeant for delivery to his superior officer in the Task Force. In his suicide note, he insisted he was innocent of the allegation.

Clear Calabar of refuse dumps, stench before you run for president –Residents to Gov Ayade

0
Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State

Public commentators, Radio phone-in callers and ordinary people on the streets of Calabar are still berating Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State over his reported presidential ambition as well as mountains of Waste in the state capital and other towns.

They said even though the governor has the right under the federal Constitution to declare his interest in the presidency yet, his performance in Cross River should have propelled his aspiration.

They pointed to the many factories he personally initiated but only a couple of such are seen to have taken off the ground, and said they doubted the genuineness of his aspiration.

Others expressed displeasure over the mounting refuse dumps blocking many major roads and streets in the state capital for nearly two months and scored him very low.

Yet those on the streets claimed that the governor was only playing on the minds of the people.

Ayara Amos, 37, who bared his mind over an early morning radio phone-in programme said, “our governor should concentrate on local politics. The presidency is not a place to go and speak flamboyant grammar. Let him evacuate the heaps of wastes that have dented the beautiful image of Calabar and other major towns.”

Another discussant, Magdalene Imoh of Positive Gender Initiative encouraged the governor to continue but should, first, make his government impactful instead of going to waste money at the initial stage of aspiration.

“I would like to call on the governor to raise the governance level in Cross River State. All parts of the state is now filthy; everywhere you turn, heaps of Waste and flies and stench salute you. This is not the famous Calabar we knew, where people trooped in to behold its serenity, cleanliness and peace.”

Chief press secretary to the governor, Christian Ita defended his principal’s decision to aspire. “I have travelled widely. The impact of governance in Cross River is far better and appreciated compared with others in the country given our own peculiarities.

I will dump quit politics if Goodluck Jonathan agrees to run under APC -Jonathan Vatsa

0
Mr Jonathan Vatsa

A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Niger State, Mr. Jonathan Vatsa has vowed to dump the APC and quit politics if former president Goodluck Jonathan agrees to contest the 2023 presidential election under the ruling party.

He said since 2015 the ruling APC has continued to blame Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP over the challenges facing the country but they are now planning to give power back to him.

Vatsa a former Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism in Niger State, said should Jonathan accept the move, he will agree with a comment once made by a former governor that there is no morality in politics.

According to him,” I pray it is a mere rumour or fake news, but if former president Goodluck Jonathan accepts to contest the forthcoming election and under APC, then I will agree with a former governor who once said there is no morality in politics. I will not only leave the party, I will quit politics and go back to the farm”.

Speaking in reaction to the news of Jonathan running for the Presidency under the APC, the former state Publicity Secretary for the party, said he is aware that the APC is desperate not to allow power to return to the opposition PDP in 2023.

He lamented, after seven years of disappointing performance by the APC in all aspects, the option of Jonathan as its presidential candidate should not be considered.

“We told Nigerians in 2015, that Jonathan was a devil, Jonathan was corrupt, Jonathan was incompetent to address Insecurity in the country, Jonathan is from a minority tribe, and all manner of propaganda, seven years after he is now an angel”

He continued, “since 2015 we have continued to blame Jonathan and PDP for our inability to perform and fix the country, and now we want to give the government back to the same man we accused of destroying this country, this is a huge joke and amount to taking Nigerians for granted”

Vatsa further declared that under the APC, Jonathan cannot win the election no matter the amount of rigging by the party, adding,” Nigerians cannot sincerely vote for APC again, no matter who is the candidate.

Ghana interbank system in PAPSS to deepen inclusion

0
cedis

The Ghanaian Cedi depreciated marginally against the dollar from 7.53 last week to 7.56. At the Money Summit in Ghana this week, the head of payments at the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Settor Amediku, said that inclusion of the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems in the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) will help deepen financial inclusion as businesses transact via mobile phones. We expect further weakening for the Cedi amid continued capital outflows and global economic fallout from the Russia-Ukraine war.

Oil to food shortages hit industry
Supply disruptions continue to be felt across Africa – from companies in Nigeria struggling to manage with the steep climb in diesel prices to the South African Canegrowers Association suffering from the combined impact of rising fertilizer costs, poor weather and an impending tax hike. In Ghana, the soaring price of liquefied natural gas is causing a return to charcoal, compromising the government’s drive to avert deforestation by distributing free gas cylinders to encourage the switch to LNG. Meantime, two Asian powerhouses have taken divergent approaches to dealing with the global food shortage. As India eagerly takes on its first assignment as a substitute wheat supplier to Egypt, Indonesia has taken a different stance by banning palm oil exports to protect domestic consumers. This ban has far reaching consequences on African countries like Kenya which depend solely on imports for its cooking oil and has already seen prices jump by 30% this year.

naira

Naira steady at all-time low
The Naira held firm all week at 589 to the dollar in the parallel market, maintaining its weakest level on record. Nigeria and the UK agreed to enter discussions on an Enhanced Trade Partnership (ETP) in priority sectors to help strengthen bilateral trade, currently worth £3.2bn annually. Just weeks after obtaining approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria to operate as a payment service bank, MTN Nigeria completed the country’s biggest issue of commercial paper as part of its strategy to diversify financing options, raising 127bn Naira in 184- and 254 day tenors priced at 8.50% yield. We expect the Naira to hold firm in the coming days as a result of reduced demand pressure.

Rand

Rand heads for 16.00 levels for first time in 2022
The Rand dropped to 15.85 from 15.57 this week, deepening its rout after plunging almost 7% last week. The slump follows US Federal Reserve comments indicating future interest rate hikes, as well as reduced economic growth prospects for South Africa this year after the recent floods and power outages. Investors sought safety in the dollar this week as the Covid crisis in China sparks concern of slower global economic growth. Based on current trends, we expect the Rand to continue to weaken in coming days, returning to 16.00 levels for the first time this year.

Egypt

Egypt diversification helps Pound outlook
The Egyptian pound weakened to 18.51 from 18.49 this week. To strengthen resilience against supply shocks from the Russia-Ukraine war, Egypt is seeking to almost double its strategic wheat reserves to 5m tons from 2.6m by upgrading the capacity of existing silos and building more. After being added to Egypt’s list of approved wheat suppliers earlier this month, India is set to ship its first cargo containing 55,000 tons of wheat. We expect the Egyptian pound to hold firm in the coming days helped by the country’s moves to diversify supplies.

Kenya

Kenya’s record-low Shilling faces election dip
The Kenyan Shilling continued to depreciate against the US dollar, hitting an all-time low of 115.87 from last week’s close of 115.4, amid a dollar shortage in the face of demand from manufacturing and energy importers. Costs of production have increased due to currency depreciation and the high prices of fuel and raw materials driving inflation higher. Reserves used by the central bank to support the Shilling against volatility remain adequate at US$ 8.485 billion, covering for 5.04 months of imports. With the uncertainty around the general election scheduled for August, foreign investors are likely to exit local capital markets, pushing the Shilling lower in the short term.

Uganda

Uganda Shilling losses to extend on month-end dollar demand
The Ugandan shilling was on the backfoot this week, losing ground to 3560 from 3520 ahead of next week’s Eid holidays. Uganda’s central bank maintained its key lending rate at 6.5% despite inflation rising to 3.7% in March 2022 from 3.2% – a level still lower than in many other African economies. We expect continued pressure on the Shilling as importers fulfilling month-end contracts boost dollar demand.

Tanza

US investments in Tanzania to lift jobs and Shilling
Tanzania’s Shilling weakened to 2,320/2,330 from last week’s close at 2318/2328 amid increased dollar demand from importers, especially manufacturers. As the war in Ukraine hampers the global economic recovery, the IMF projects Tanzania’s GDP growth at 4.8% for 2022, a decline from 4.9% in 2021, with projections for 5.2% in 2023. Meanwhile, the US signed seven agreements totaling Sh11.7 trillion for business projects in Tanzania to be implemented by investors. This should help to spur employment opportunities in agriculture, tourism, trade and other sectors. The inflows should help to steady the Shilling.

Camidoh

D-Black reacts after ECG cuts of power supply at his club

0
D-Black

Artiste and entrepreneur, D-Black, has reacted hours after news broke that the Electricity company of Ghana (ECG) has cut off power supply at his club, Oasis. On Wednesday, April 27, 2022, a national task force from ECG went to the business premises of the rapper to disconnect it from accessing the national grid.

The reason the facilities have been denied electricity supply is because, according to the ECG, the businesses were illegally using electricity as they bypassed the ECG meters.

The premises house Oasis Pool, Shisha Lounge, and Club Onyx – all owned by D-Black.

According to Citi newsroom, when the officials of the ECG found out, they “served notice on the managers of Oasis Pool and Shisha Lounge to report to its office for further interrogation.”

D-Black, who had not made any comment about the issue, tweeted on Thursday, April 28 that nobody should laugh at him for what has ensue.

This action by the ECG is part of the company’s efforts to collect debts owed it by all defaulting clients not excluding state agencies.

On March 14, 2022, the ECG taskforce disconnected the power supply to Terminal 3 and other offices of the Kotoka International Airport due to unpaid bills.

Other agencies that have suffered power cuts by the task force include the Accra Sports Stadium.

KiDi and Cina Soul

Ghanaian afro-pop/soul artiste, Cina Soul, says she knew from the start that she wanted to create a song with KiDi. The artiste said this while explaining the reason she chose to feature the ‘Touch It’ hitmaker on her song ‘Feelings’.

“I wanted to do a song with KiDi. So, in my mind I knew I was going to his studio and I’m going to write a song with him from scratch.

“It was from the beginning that I knew I wanted to do a song with him so I went to his studio and KiDi produced the beat and co-wrote the song.

“From the beginning, I knew it was him so I didn’t need to think that who will I put on the song because I always wanted to do a song with KiDi,” she told the host.

She made this known in an interview with Amansan Krakye on Cape Coast based Kastle FM.

Released in 2021, ‘Feelings’ has been nominated in multiple categories in the upcoming Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) 2022.

The songstress appeared on 3Music Awards’ red carpet with the Lynx Entertainment signee. This sparked long-standing rumours that the two musical acts are dating. However, Cina Soul has consistently denied dating KiDi although she has said people shouldn’t be surprised if she settles down with him.

Black woman makes history aboard space station

Black woman Jessica Watkins

Four astronauts, including the first black woman to join the International Space Station crew, docked their SpaceX capsule at the ISS Wednesday less than 16 hours after blast off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral.

Three of the crew were from Nasa, while the other is from the European Space Agency. Their fully autonomous capsule circled the Earth more than 10 times before docking at 23:37 GMT.

Nasa webcast commentators said the Crew Dragon flight, which docked ahead of schedule, was one of the fastest ever to reach the ISS.

The mission has enabled Nasa astronaut Jessica Watkins to become the first black woman to live and work in space for an extended period.

More than a dozen black Americans, including four black women, have traveled to space – but no women has before been among the 200-odd astronauts serve on board the ISS.
