Former French PM gets 4-yrs jail for fake jobs scam

Former French Prime Minister, François Fillon

A Paris appeals court has condemned Sarkozy-era French Prime Minister, François Fillon, to four years in jail, with an obligation to spend 12 months behind bars, for his part in defrauding the French state of over one million euros. He has been fined 375,000 euros. François Fillon was lucky. The prosecution wanted to send him to jail for five years, with an obligation to serve 24 months of that sentence behind bars.

The 68-year-old was convicted by a lower court in 2020 and sentenced to five years in jail, three of them suspended.

At the appeals hearing last November, prosecutors said there was clear evidence that Fillon and his stand-in as MP for the Sarthe department, Marc Joulaud, employed Fillon’s wife Penelope in an “intangible” or “tenuous” role as a parliamentary assistant between 1998 and 2013.

Rwandan former police chief Laurent Bucyibaruta on trial

Rwandan former police chief Laurent Bucyibaruta is 78 years old. If convicted of genocide and crimes against humanity by the Paris criminal court, Bucyibaruta will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Laurent Bucyibaruta was police chief of the southern region of Gikongoro (since re-named Nyamagabe) at the time of the murder of thousands of Tutsis by their Hutu neighbours in Rwanda in 1994. He denies the charges.

Bucyibaruta goes on trial in France on Monday, accused of genocide, complicity in genocide and complicity in crimes against humanity.

The former regional police chief is accused of leading a group of local political, police and military figures, and of directing the 1994 bloodletting in the area.

Bucyibaruta is one of only a handful of Rwandans to go on trial in France over the genocide that saw an estimated 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus perish in 100 days of slaughter.

He is the highest-ranking Rwandan official ever to be tried in France for his alleged part in the 1994 massacres. He has lived in France under court control since 1997.

Spain sacks spy chief over Pegasus spyware scandal

Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles

Spain’s government has fired the director of its top intelligence agency amid two separate cases of the hacking of politicians’ mobile phones using Pegasus spyware, according to the country’s defence minister.

Paz Esteban, the first woman to head Spain’s National Intelligence Centre (CNI), will be replaced, Defence Minister Margarita Robles whose ministry oversees the agency, told a news conference on Tuesday.

The decision comes after Esteban admitted last week in a closed-door committee of Spain’s parliament that her agency had legally hacked the phones of several Catalan separatists after receiving judicial permission.

Her agency is also under scrutiny for recent revelations by the government that the mobile phones of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Defence Minister Margarita Robles were also infected with the Pegasus spyware by an “external” power.

On Tuesday, the government spokesperson Isabel Rodriguez said Pegasus was also detected in the mobile phone of Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska last year.

Sri Lanka gives emergency powers to army, police after violence

Sri Lanka violence

Sri Lanka has granted its military and police emergency powers to arrest people without warrants after a day of violence that killed seven people and injured more than 200 and resulted in the resignation of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, the older brother of sitting President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. As the Indian Ocean nation battles its worst economic crisis in history, thousands of protesters defied an islandwide curfew until 7am on Wednesday to continue protesting. Shortages of fuel, food and medicine brought thousands onto the streets in more than a month of protests that had been mostly peaceful until this week.

Some reports surfaced of angry protesters attacking politicians associated with the government late on Monday, setting fire to homes, shops and businesses they own.

The situation had largely calmed by Tuesday, barring reports of sporadic unrest, said police spokesman Nihal Thalduwa, adding that some 200 people had been injured on Monday. According to the latest decision, the military can detain people for up to 24 hours before handing them to the police, while any private property can be searched by forces, the government said in a gazette notification on Tuesday.

Security tightened for top US judges amid abortion protests

0
US President Biden

US law enforcement agencies are beefing up security for Supreme Court justices after a leak suggested they may overturn legalised abortion. The US Marshals Service said on Monday it was helping the agencies normally tasked with the judges’ protection. A protest was held on Monday night at Justice Samuel Alito’s house in Alexandria, Virginia. Activists chanted: “Abort the court!” Rallies were held outside the homes of two other justices this weekend.

On Saturday night, a group of about 100 people marched from the home of Justice Brett Kavanaugh to Chief Justice John Roberts’ house nearby in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Shut Down DC, the left-wing group behind Monday’s demonstration outside Justice Alito’s house, said the plan was to “hold a moment of silence for the rights we know are ours”. Separately, an anti-abortion centre suffered an arson attack on Sunday.

The White House said earlier on Monday that demonstrations should never include “violence, threats or vandalism”. “[President Biden] strongly believes in the constitutional right to protest,” said a statement from his press secretary Jen Psaki.

Ukraine bid to join EU will take decades -Macron

France president Emmanuel Macron

It will take decades for Ukraine to be accepted into the European Union, France’s Emmanuel Macron has said. In a speech to the EU’s parliament in Strasbourg, he instead suggested Ukraine could join a “parallel European community” while it awaited a decision.

This would allow non-EU members to join Europe’s security architecture in other ways, said President Macron. His words came as fierce fighting continued in the eastern Donbas region, where Russia is trying to make gains. A senior US defence official characterised the Russian advance as “single-digit kilometre kind of progress”. A Ukrainian leader in the Luhansk region said serious battles were taking place.

Ukraine began the process of applying to join the EU in February this year, four days after Russia’s invasion. Ukraine began the process of applying to join the EU in February this year, four days after Russia’s invasion.

“We all know perfectly well that the process to allow [Ukraine] to join would take several years indeed, probably several decades,” Mr Macron said.

Home Remedies for Burns

0
Aloe

When your skin gets hit with something hot, your first thought might be what to put on the burn to soothe the pain and help prevent damage. These remedies for burns turn stuff from your pantry (or even your bathroom—hello, mint toothpaste!) into treatments that can provide quick relief.

Never Use Ice on a Burn!

Ice can restrict blood flow to the skin, and further damage tissue. Instead, immediately place the burned area under cool running water, which helps the injury from spreading, and keep it there for at least 20 minutes if possible. What else works? Aloe, probably the most well known home remedy for burns, will stop pain and inflammation, reduce swelling, and stimulate skin growth and repair. But if you don’t have any on hand, treating a burn with any of these other options should offer relief.

Mint Toothpaste

For when you accidentally touch something hot without a potholder, or get splattered by something that’s boiling, keep a tube of white, minty toothpaste in the kitchen as a home remedy to relieve a minor burn. First, run the scalded area under cold water, then gently pat it dry with a paper towel and cover with a layer of the toothpaste.

Vanilla

For minor burns, reach for vanilla extract. Use a cotton swab to gently dab vanilla onto the burned skin. The evaporation of the alcohol in vanilla extract will cool the burn, alleviating pain.

Tea Bags

Black tea contains tannic acid, which draws heat from burns to help make them less painful. (Those same soothing compounds make tea a great home remedy for toothaches and many other conditions.) Treat the burn by placing two or three cool, wet black tea bags on it, using gauze to hold the bags in place.

Vinegar

White vinegar contains acetic acid, a component of aspirin that can help relieve the pain, itching, and inflammation of a burn. It is also an antiseptic and astringent, so it will help keep your burn from becoming infected. Vinegar also draws heat from the burn, helping to dull pain naturally. Soak paper towels in diluted vinegar to create a soothing compress or use cotton swabs to gently dab the burn with vinegar.

Honey

A famous sore throat remedy, honey is a natural antibiotic, which helps to prevent your burn from becoming infected. It has a natural pH balance that is inhospitable to bacteria, so once applied topically, it can also kill any existing bacteria or infection lingering on the skin. Honey will also cool the burn, relieve pain, and help the skin to heal.

Milk

The fat and protein content in milk soothes burns and promotes healing. Soak the burn in milk for 15 minutes for quick relief. Full-fat, whole-milk yogurt can also help cool and hydrate your parched skin.

Oats

With its skin-soothing properties to reduce inflammation, oats are particularly useful when your burn is healing and you’re tempted to scratch it. Add a cup of oats to bath water and soak for 20 minutes to soothe a large burn. For smaller irritations, add some oats to a small bowl of water and soak the affected area. Air dry your skin so a thin layer of oats remains, further reducing itching. For added relief, toss some baking soda into the bathwater. Bicarbonate of soda helps soothe skin inflammation.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is an excellent source of skin-healing vitamin E and it also contains fatty acids that are anti-fungal and anti-bacterial, which help keep your burn from becoming infected. If a scald has left a nasty mark on your skin, one home remedy suggests adding lemon juice to the coconut oil before massaging it into the mark. The acidic properties of lemon juice will help lighten the scar while the coconut oil helps it heal.

Lavender Oil

A French chemist discovered the healing power of lavender oil in the early 1900s. When he severely burned his hand in a lab accident and plunged it into a vat of lavender essential oil, the oil eased the pain and his burn healed quickly. Mix 1 teaspoon of pure lavender essential oil into about 2 ounces of water in a misting bottle. Shake and mist burned skin lightly as often as needed. Tea tree oil and witch hazel are also effective remedies for a minor burn.

Vitamins C and E

You associate vitamin C with colds, but did you know it can play a role in everything from UTIs to soothing skin? Vitamin C promotes wound healing and the production of collagen, the base material for new skin. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps repair and protect your skin. To speed the healing of a burn, one home remedy is to eat foods rich in vitamins C and E or take 2,000 milligrams of vitamin C and 1,000 IU of vitamin E for a week or so after your burn. You can even break open a vitamin E capsule and apply it directly on the burn to help it heal and prevent scarring.

Tuchel ‘angers Chelsea players by dragging them into training on their day off’

Tuchel has reportedly irritated Chelsea players

Thomas Tuchel has reportedly irritated Chelsea‘s squad by hauling players into training on what was supposed to be their day off.

The Blues manager is doing everything he can to arrest the club’s recent slump – which has put their participation in next season’s Champions League in some doubt – with the FA Cup final against Liverpool to come this weekend.

Chelsea threw away a two-goal lead and conceded a 97th-minute equaliser in their 2-2 draw with Wolves on Saturday, which left them with just one win in their last five matches. According to The Sun, players were unhappy at being called in on Sunday as they are exhausted following a season which has seen them play 59 games in all competitions so far. It is also reported that defender Marcos Alonso feels he was made a scapegoat in the Wolves game and believes he was having his effort questioned by being substituted at half-time.

In addition, the report claims that some of the squad think their chances of fighting for the league title next season are in jeopardy because of the impending exits of leaders such as Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger.

Klopp was looking for excuse, says Spurs’ boss Antonio Conte

Conte hugs Klopp

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte says Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp was looking for an “excuse or an alibi” when he criticised Spurs’ style in Saturday’s 1-1 draw. Klopp said “I don’t like this kind of football” and “they should do more for the game” after a good defensive Spurs showing dented Liverpool’s title hopes. Conte, though, suggested his opposing number was “a bit frustrated. It is important to be focused on your team not the opponent,” he said.

He added: “It means you want to find an excuse or an alibi because your job was wrong.”

Spurs are fifth in the Premier League table, four points off the Champions League places though they have the opportunity to cut that deficit when hosting fourth-placed Arsenal on Thursday.

Conte continued: “I want to win every game, I try to transfer this thought to my players.

“When I stay in one team, my aspiration or desire is to fight to win the title. To win the league in England is not easy. Pep Guardiola says Liverpool won one league in 30 years, it shows it is not simple.

“Maybe sometimes it’s easier to win the Champions League than the league in England but after the game against Liverpool, the good answer that I heard was my players were disappointed at the end of the game.

“They felt the possibility to win the the game. We analysed the game the day after. If there was a team that deserved to win it was Tottenham and not Liverpool.

“I think in this game, Klopp understood he gained one point, not lost two points. I think Jurgen is an intelligent person.”

Liverpool are three points behind leaders Manchester City with three games to go, starting with the Reds’ trip to Aston Villa on Tuesday.

Manchester City agree to sign Haaland for £51.2m

Erling Haaland

Manchester City have reached an agreement to sign Norway striker Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund.

Haaland, 21, will join in July after City activated a 60m euro (£51.2m) release clause in his contract.

The deal ends the club’s hunt for a successor to their all-time top scorer Sergio Aguero, who joined Barcelona on a free transfer last summer.

“We can confirm that we have reached an agreement in principle for the transfer of striker Erling Haaland,” City said.

“The transfer remains subject to the club finalising terms with the player.”

Haaland has scored 85 goals in 88 appearances for Dortmund since joining from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020.

La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona also spoke to Haaland about a potential deal, but he opted for a move to Etihad Stadium.

Speaking earlier on Tuesday, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said he could not discuss the incoming signing for legal reasons.

“Everybody knows the situation. I shouldn’t talk because I don’t like to talk about the future or next season,” he said.
