“There are more projects to take over Africa and the rest of the world so please don’t say because I have won the Artiste of the year you are done with KiDi and concentrate on a new person. I need the support now than ever” KiDisaid this appeal is for himself and his colleague Artistes.

Adding how his son Zain reacted to his win, KiDi intimated that due to the time of the awards, his son could not watch the event live.

“I told him the following day that ‘Golden boy’ album won awards and he said I know. I asked him if he watched it and he said no he didn’t, but he knows. The vim he has,” KiDi revealed in an interview on TV3 New Day which was monitored by The Chronicle.

Sherifa Gunu

Ghanaian Musician Sherifa Gunu has recounted how she escaped from her Northern Region home to Accra to pursue her music career.

Having been born and raised in a less privileged background in Savelugu in the Northern Region, Sherifa revealed how she had to escape from her hometown to the nation’s capital Accra.

According to her, she made it to Accra in a truck transferring cows from the northern part of Ghana to the south.

The musician in an interview on Northern Achiever on Motion TV which was monitored by The Chronicle said that she had to take this risk because her father was unable to raise resources from his brother to pay her Senior Secondary School (SSS) fees at the time.

“There came a time my father was looking for GHc80 to pay my school fees and never got that amount. He tried sourcing it from his brother who was a bit financially sound but he declined to support him. I saw my father returning and looking distraught with tears filled in his eyes. It was from there I resolved to relocate from Savelugu because there was no need I have talent but my family is broke. I became frustrated and needed to help my father,” she revealed.

“I approached my uncle who usually transported cows to the south to help me leave Savelugu with a promise not to tell my father about it. He agreed and I gave a polythene bag containing my belongings to a friend Bintu to wait at the station for me to join. Finally, I managed to sneak out of the house and boarded the truck with 20 cows. It took us two days on the trip before we finally arrived at Kumasi. The cows kicked at me, defecated, and were also beaten by the rain. It is something I will never forget,” she recounted

Narrating it on TV3 New Day which was monitored by The Chronicle, KiDi said it was friend’s birthday which was organized in the nightclub after the VGMA so he was there to support him.

FEATURE: And The NDC Roars (4) The Reasons For The Roaring

0
Feature

From Democratisation of Violence to Demonisation of Righteousness

The Supreme Court had been in the limelight recently when it ruled that our Canadian MP, Gyakye Quayson of Assin North, should continue to stay out of Parliament, as ruled by the High Court until the substantive case was over. This the NDC rose up against and started calling the Supreme Court, a den of criminals.

In the case of Parliamentary Elections Petitions, the law mandates the High Court to hear and rule on them. The Cape Coast High Court ruled that Gyakye Quayson was a Canadian at the time he filed to contest the elections.

The late Adamu Dramani Sakande of the NPP, suffered the same fate and he was sentenced to jail for perjury. While the NPP respected the decision of the court, the NDC would not comport themselves as such.

Earlier, the Supreme Court in another case ruled that in conformity with Article 1 (1) which states that the sovereignty of the country lies in the people, and since the people are represented by MPs in Parliament, deputy speakers of the House who are MPs in themselves, must vote on decisions when presiding over matters. This, too the NDC decided to demonise it.

Respectfully, who are the lawless group of people in this country? Which group has dismissed judges because they came out with unfavourable rulings? Which group has killed judges and which group is demonising judges who in the face of the law, ruled as they saw things?

Who are trying to make this country ungovernable by insisting that what they say is to be accepted and not what the Constitution and other laws say if they do not, please them?

It seems very obvious that the recent attacks on the Supreme Court by the NDC, is just for a number of ulterior motives.

Once Gyakye Quayson case has been settled and the High Court’s verdict on it is allowed to stand, the NDC stands another chance of losing yet another seat where an Ivorian stood and won the elections in the Jomoro constituency. It will be too much for that party to bear because these two issues will expose the lawless nature of the Rawlings’ founded party.

Also, the fact that the Supreme Court is directing that the former NDC ministers/MPs who knowingly and yet illegally collected double salaries during the Mills/Mahama regime, must face persecution, demonising of the Apex Court would hopefully give the NDC some sympathy from the general public.

The NDC members are doing their worst to tarnish the reputation and image of the courts, especially the Supreme Court. So that, any verdict that will go against them should be considered a predetermined one against a party that stands for the poor and vulnerable, and yet could impoverish the poor to enrich themselves.

Matters will help if only the Supreme Court accepts the suggestion by the Attorney-General, that all high-profile cases should be telecast live. Anything other than that. Ghanaians should be sure that the NDC will raise tensions in this country, just to put some fear into the judges. Remember judges were killed in the PNDC era.

The question is, why is the NDC roaring this loud, at this time?

It has happened before. During the final years of the NPP Kufuor’s administration, at the time that Ghana’s economy was at its top with the dollar going for less than ninety-five pesewas, the NDC knew it must do something to make Ghanaians see the NPP administration as the worst ever in this country.

Corruption charges were levelled against the then government and so long as the lies could be told over and over again, for it to be accepted as the truth, the NDC went into business. It was propagated that a ship load of gold belonging to some NPP ministers was on its way to Europe when it sunk in high seas. To date, no report has been made of any such ship sinking.

Then, false bank statements were printed out bearing the names of some top ministers, showing huge sums of money deposited in those accounts. Even though Bank of Ghana came out to debunk the story stating that the amounts showing on those bank statements exceeded the total cash in banks and cash in circulation in the country, the harm had already been done already and most Ghanaians believed that the Kufuor Administration was made up of a gang of thieves and drug dealers. Remember, in the run up to the 2008 General Elections, Rawlings coined the name, Coke, meaning cocaine, for the NPP flag bearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Why all these? And it first became evident, that the NDC only lied big time to Ghanaians, when some of the ministerial nominees had to choke on their own answers when asked at the Appointment Committee of Parliament sittings, to justify those allegations they made against the previous NPP regime. Some were bold to admit that it was all political talk.

NDC from 2009 to 2017, could not persecute any former NPP political appointee because no matter how hard as it dug for facts of malfeasance, it turned out that no one misconducted themself in the Kufuor administration, while in office.

But why all these lies? As soon as the NDC came to power, it showed that its intention to govern this country was to fill the empty pockets of its members and enrich them, by any means available.

Corruption was clouded in new clothes and paraded with such pomp and pageantry. The list included the following:

1). Before JEA Mills came to power, there was the Mabey and Johnson bribery scandal. And when the case was called in the UK in August 2009, five cabinet members of Rawlings’ government were linked to a $40 million bribe case in they split $ 6 million bribe money among themselves, when JEA Mills was vice president.

And here is the NDC which Rawlings disturbed people’s ears roaring that it was a party of saints. Rawlings, himself should have been asked how come he became so wealthy. It could be possible that he pocketed the ¢ 50.00 bank notes he retrieved from Ghanaians in 1985.

2). During a People’s Assembly held by President Kufuor in Sekondi, one Kobina Badu (Maanoma), a well-known NDC member, attacked the fine gentleman, saying,”Mr Kufour, do you think the sea is like a lorry park which will need renovation when it is damaged?” Immediately after the NDC came back to power, President JEA Mills appointed Maanoma on the National Premix Committee. Kobina Badu used that opportunity to divert premix. He would collect four drums of the oil from every outlet in the region, whenever the consignments came and sell each drum at GH¢1,575 instead of GH¢ 910.00, (GH¢ 45.00 per gallon instead of GH¢ 26.00), whenever the premix was hard to come by. Assuming there are ten outlets in the region, Kobina Badu made a cool GH¢ 15,750.00 at the expense of the poor fisherman, who must pay an extra GH¢ 19.00 for a gallon of premix.

When Kobina Badu was found out and arrested, he was quickly released from police custody because it could dent the image of the president and government.

3). Speculations came out that President JEA Mills and his vice H.E. John Mahama were in the pockets of Zoomlion. Even though this was denied, it was very obvious that some NDC government and party officials had kick-backs from the refuse company.

4). The NDC transition team spent over GH¢361,000.00 on tea and water alone over a period of only two months.

5). GH¢1 million was spent on the visit of President Obama, a visit which was under 24 hours. Maybe, Ghana paid Obama, per diem and settled his travelling expenses.

6). When Alhaji Mutaka Mubarak as Sports minister, used his office as a charity organisation, buying pampas and khebab and travelling abroad with his girl friend at the expense of the Ghanaian tax payer.

7). There was also this famous Brazil FIFA 2014, when over $ 30 million earmarked for the Black Stars, players and management ended up in individual pockets. This necessitated the then President John Mahama to airlift $3 million for our players, avoiding payment of E-Levy.

8). Then there was this case of Alfred Agbesi Woyome, who was permitted to steal GH¢ 51 million from state coffers. When it became necessary for Woyome to face the courts, the NDC government changed the charge sheet from criminal to civil case. Meaning if Woyome were found guilty, he would not visit jail.

And in another surprising move, the government of the NDC stated that it was no longer interested in the case. So Woyome could walk free.

Questions which good Ghanaians are asking is that, was part of Woyome’s GH¢ 51 million, which he stole, used to finance the construction of the NDC headquarters? The most modern, state of the art, political headquarters, south of the Sahara.

More will come later. This is a way of cautioning Ghanaians that the NDC’s attacks against this current regime, and I agree and submit, that times are rough, is just to woo Ghanaians to vote that party to power, so that the members can go ahead and loot. And the next time, it will be more severe, because in a social media video clip, the NDC sent a warning that next time it comes to power, it will only take care to itself and not Ghanaians.

You Are Worthy And Enough

0
OPINION

For you created my innermost being, you knit me together in my mother’s womb, I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made, your works are wonderful, I know that full welly frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body, all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. (Psalm 139:13-16). Beloved look at how God created you beautifully, well if you’ve ever looked at yourself with much disgust, this scripture is reminding us of how the maker took his time and knit us even before we came into this world. Appreciate yourself, for you are enough. Don’t expect love from others when you have already degraded yourself, realise that you are enough and God has tagged you as such.

Give no room for negativity that gets you thinking otherwise and keeps your mind focused on the fact that you need material things in life to make you complete. People feed you with all manner of negative statements just to get you devaluing your worth but hear this, your personality is like a cake which has been moulded by God, structured into how best it will fit your life and God’s description for you, however the icing to flavor the cake is in your hands. God has created us and given us the will to walk in his light, word and truth. Once you know your worth and know that you’re enough you follow the best principles in life, work hard and mould your cake(life) with some icing (flavor) to make you blossom in God’s grace. You have everything in life because you’re a child of God, you have breath and wisdom to guide you accomplish your task on earth.

Chase not after worthless things without developing yourself first. What do you have to offer God? A deceitful soul; a clean soul; or an ungrateful soul? What are you giving back to God after all He has moulded you into? Beloved you are enough to spread the gospel regardless of how you have been knocked down. You are enough to realise that no weapon formed against you shall prosper until you become that weapon forming against yourself. God says you’re enough so therefore have faith in his word. Life is not always rosy until you make its fragrance smell like a rose in your own garden. Keep on keeping on, cherish yourself, and honour God. You are enough!

In an era where the pressure to please others is on the rise, many people are now living absurd lives they never imagined for themselves. Being true to oneself is a treasure we must individually value. By being truthful, we are being sincere with what we want in life, remaining assertive and not living life according to the current trend but rather being sincere with ourselves. By being true to yourself you don’t settle for less, you know your value and live by the standards you have set for yourself and not breaking bounds to please the crowd. In living truthfully with yourself you don’t go with the crowd. By being truthful to yourself you don’t enter into a relationship with someone and profess love when you have no idea of the concept, everyone has a partner so you must get yourself one. No, you don’t accept less since that’s the only option available, rather you stay put, work hard and wait on what you truly deserve.

Deception is that sickness that affects you in your old age and makes you regret all the wrong decisions you made in your youthful days. Be truthful to yourself, do you really want this kind of lifestyle you’re living? By being true to yourself you don’t forcefully get married when it’s not your time yet, you don’t choose someone’s God ordained husband or wife for yourself because you feel there’s none coming your way. Give no room for fornication; don’t allow deception to lead you into choosing anything or anyone for yourself. Many eligible people who come your way may be good but are not meant for you therefore seek God’s direction and be true to yourself. Make a choice because it is right for you and not because time is running, don’t go ahead of yourself, live in the bliss of the moment. You’re on God’s time schedule and not anyone’s. Be honest with yourself, stop comparing yourself to others. You didn’t come on earth with anyone therefore don’t live under pressure with the intention of pleasing others.

To you reading this, I know how hard it is been to be true to yourself on a daily basis, you can neither see the head nor tail of your life, what do soldiers do when they go for war? They fight, it may feel like no one is watching you, but keep doing the good that you do, it’ll speak for you someday. Fight for your integrity, hold it in high esteem, don’t lose it trying to fit into society, just stay true to yourself, stay in your lane, learn from others and let truth prevail in your life. Walk in truth, live in truth and be true to your individual self.

Proving to people that you are successful, on top of your game, the talk of the town, the most endowed and the like just for fame is irrelevant. Knowing and understanding that you’re enough there’s no point in proving yourself to anyone. Instead of competing with your neighbor endeavour to rather complete your given task on earth in humility, envying no one. When we see that our mates and close acquaintances are all successful, you wonder how they got there, due to this you try every means possible and force your way into being successful through dubious means just to compete with your neighbor. At the end of each persons life that is you and your competitor what will be your Ultimate Prize?

Be encouraged to live within ones means, the tables in life could turn anytime, every individual will have their fair share of celebration when the right time for your blessing from heaven is due. The ultimate prize we should fight for is to make it to heaven because where do you go when you leave this earth? We cannot catch the wind, it blows in diverse directions, it chooses whom to blow favour. Don’t compete with anyone rather be happy for them when they see success, celebrate with them, do not envy, this will only let love prevail. This is what Christ requires of us. Let’s not just say it, act it! The more you keep proving yourself to people, the more you remain where you are; you never actually progress to where God has planned for you. Let us employ the services of humility.

Our Ultimate Prize is to be in the dwelling place with Christ. Marriage which is a beautiful thing may have delayed for you, your relationship status has a bitter end and you always have a problem with God. The problem is not God; the problem is you are in competition with the world. You’re running the race and never winning. God is saying train enough; let him prepare you enough in order for you to be at the top also. Instead of competing with the world, yearn to complete your God given task on earth, so that in the end, the Ultimate Prize tag of being a candidate of heaven is placed on you. Battle for the completion not the competition.

Senate amends Electoral Act to allow President, lawmakers, govs vote at party primaries

0
Senate

The Senate, on Tuesday, amended the Electoral Act 2022, to allow ‘statutory delegates’, all those elected to participate and vote in the conventions, congresses or meetings of political parties.

This followed the expeditious consideration of a bill during plenary, which scaled first, second and third readings, respectively, and was passed by the chamber after consideration by the Committee of the Whole.

Those identified as ‘statutory delegates’ include the President, Vice President, Members of the National Assembly, Governors and their deputies, Members of the State Houses of Assembly, Chairmen of Councils, Councillors and National Working Committee of political parties, amongst others.

The bill to amend the 2022 Electoral Act No. 13 was sponsored by the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege (Delta Central).

Omo-Agege, in his presentation, said the bill seeks to amend the provision of section 84(8) of the Electoral Act. According to him, the provisions of the section “does not provide for the participation of what is generally known as ‘statutory delegates’ in the conventions, congresses or meetings of political parties.”

Speaking after the bill to amend the 2022 Electoral Act was passed, the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, in his remarks, said that the amendment became imperative in view of the deficiency created by the provision of Section 84(8) of the extant Act.

He said, “The amended Electoral Act of 2022 that we passed this year, has a deficiency that was never intended and that deficiency will deny all statutory delegates in all political parties from participation in congresses and conventions”.

Political parties ask INEC to extend timeline for primaries

0
INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu

Political parties in the country have asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to extend the timelines for the 2023 general elections by two months.

Specifically, the parties want slight changes to the primaries’ timeline, as stipulated by the electoral umpire.

Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Yusuf Yabagi, made the appeal on Tuesday at a meeting of the electoral umpire and leaders of various political parties at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

According to Yabagi, who also serves as the National Chairman of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), the extension is necessary to help political parties put things in order for the forthcoming general elections.

In his opening remarks, INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, listed the agenda of the meeting which was well attended by national chairmen of various party, including Abdullahi Adamu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Iyorchia Ayu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He explained that discussions would focus on issues concerning the continuous voters’ registration, the upcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States, as well as political parties’ primaries for the 2023 polls.

Professor Yakubu informed the party leaders that the commission would not review the existing timelines and appealed that primaries be conducted credibly in order to minimise litigations.

While reminding them of the forthcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun, he called on all the parties to comply with the provisions in the Electoral Act.

At the last meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), the INEC chief had raised serious concerns about attacks on personnel conducting the CVR exercise in some states.

The security situation in parts of the affected states, including Imo, Anambra, and Kaduna, forced the electoral umpire to suspend the exercise in the areas.

NNPC, Central Bank ‘cannot help fix’ jet fuel prices

0
NNPC Chief Mele Kyari

The head of Nigeria’s state oil firm and the central bank governor have told the national assembly and the country’s airlines they are unable to help with soaring jet fuel prices.

However, in a resolution to the meeting, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) agreed to supply jet fuel to marketers nominated by the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON).

The association will apply for a jet fuel import licence, the speaker of the house of representatives Femi Gbajabiamila, said.

“We cannot fix the prices … on a deregulated commodity. The only way we can fix the price of aviation fuel is to introduce a subsidy,” NNPC chief Mele Kyari told MPs.

Central bank governor Godwin Emefiele, who is making an unprecedented presidential run, said he could not offer the airlines a “concessionary rate” on foreign exchange to help with imports.

“If it is naira intervention that airlines want, they could approach their banks,” Emefiele told the lawmakers. “The banks would look at it.”

Nigeria’s oil refineries, relics of colonial times that have been mismanaged for years, are barely functional. As a result, Africa’s largest oil producer has to rely mostly on imports of refined fuel for its domestic needs.

But fuel prices have risen sharply around the world since Western companies began imposing a series of increasingly tight financial sanctions on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine in late February.

The price increase has affected already debt-laden airlines that rely on imported kerosene or jet fuel, which is not subsidised, unlike gasoline.

The head of AON says this situation did not have to be this dire and that NNPC had failed to deliver on a promise to supply jet fuel at a fixed 500 naira ($1.21) a litre.

Goodluck Jonathan dissociates himself from 2023 bid

0
Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan will not seek the governing party ticket to contest presidential elections next year, his spokesman has said, ending months of speculation of a planned return to national politics.

A group of supporters from northern Nigeria had bought nomination forms for Jonathan to take part in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party’s primary elections scheduled for later this month.

But in a statement late on Monday, his spokesman Ikechukwu Eze said the former president did not authorise the purchase of the nomination forms, a requirement for candidates to take part in primary elections.

Jonathan was president between 2010 and 2015, under the People’s Democratic Party, now in opposition.

It is common for Nigerian politicians to switch sides during elections, but it would have been a surprising about-turn if the APC had decided to embrace a candidate it once derided as incompetent when he was president.

With President Muhammadu Buhari due to step down next year after serving two full terms, the race to succeed him is wide open with more than 20 governing party candidates registering to contest the primary vote.

Registration will end on Tuesday and a party committee will screen the candidates, who include Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former Lagos state governor and party heavyweight Bola Tinubu, Minister of Petroleum Timipre Sylva and several ministers and state governors. Central bank governor, Godwin Emefiele, is also making an unprecedented presidential run.

But the field is expected to narrow once political horse-trading starts, which will lead to some candidates dropping out.
