“If we are able to get the right diagnosis of SLE or lupus, patients can get better care,” says Dr Ahmed Habib, Medical Superintendent of the Hohoe Government Hospital.

World Lupus Day 2022, themed ‘Make Lupus Visible’, is being marked in Ghana and around the world to highlight the impact of lupus on the body’s organs.

Research in Ghana indicates that delay in diagnosis of lupus leads to prolonged suffering from inflammation, which can result in organ damage. There are many diagnosed as well as undiagnosed people suffering from lupus in Ghana.

The World Lupus Federation global survey 2022 indicates that 87% of people living with lupus have experienced at least one organ affected by the disease.

According to the survey, majority of reported patients have multiple organs impacted by lupus with an average of three organs affected. The most common organs were; skin (60%) and bones (45%).

Other top impacted organs and organ systems include; kidneys (36%), GI/Digestive System (34%), eyes (31%) and Central Nervous System (26%).

According to Dr Habib, lupus is an autoimmune disease that many doctors are unable to pick if they do not increase their index of suspicion for such conditions.

He affirmed that lupus awareness is important because sometimes patients are misdiagnosed and given other treatments.

He said, “If awareness is given to health workers, then many cases of sufferers of this condition can now be diagnosed and treatment can be given to them.”

Though there is no known cause, it is believed that exposure to certain environmental conditions, infections, certain medications and genes as well as hormones contribute to triggering lupus in people.

“It is crucial to make lupus visible because even the ‘normal or healthy’ person cannot tell whether he/she is susceptible to the cruel and complicated disease called lupus”, says Mrs Emma Wilhelmina Halm Danso, Executive Director of Oyemam Autoimmune Foundation.

“Lupus is that seemingly harmless butterfly that flies in and acts as a vicious and menacing wolf,” she added.

Some symptoms that lupus patients present include butterfly rash, oral or nasal ulcers, arthritis, serositis, as well as other disorders involving heart, kidney, lungs, nervous system, skin, etc. Lupus is primarily diagnosed by a Rheumatologist, who uses different criteria, such as the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria and Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics (SLICC) criteria for diagnosis.

Many lupus patients may have positive antinuclear antibody (ANA), positive anti-dsDNA, etc, from their laboratory tests.

About 90 percent of lupus patients are women. Most of these patients are within child-bearing age of between 14 to 44 years.

Each year, Mother’s Day and Lupus Day are closely celebrated together in May, which is also Lupus Awareness Month.

According to Mrs Emma Danso, a mother and patient advocate, “This is no mere coincidence. I want to use the occasion of World Lupus Day 2022 to particularly celebrate the wonderful mothers who put part of their lives on hold to care for their children and loved ones suffering from lupus. They give care with love and fight with us through faith,” said Mrs Danso.

She expressed her desire of seeing the political leadership, corporate Ghana and all Ghanaians showing support for lupus and auto-immune diseases in Ghana.

She stated that Oyemam Autoimmune Foundation will continue to remain committed to advocating and raising awareness about lupus, through its Lupus Awareness Campaign.

When women act as mothers, wives, employees, public servants or function in any other role, they perform excellently and so it breaks my heart when they are unable to do so, due to the debilitating impact of lupus,” the OYEMAM leader stated.

When lupus strikes a person, the immune system turns against itself and attacks the health tissues and organs.

Accurate and timely diagnosis and treatment are necessary to arrest the condition and to ensure that the impact of lupus on a patient’s quality of life is cancelled or minimised.

Sarkodie and Stonebwoy

Dancehall Artiste Stonebwoy says his relationship with Rapper Sarkodie is “cool now.”

This follows a heightened tension between the two after a misunderstanding during Sarkodie’s ‘Black Love Concert’ in 2020 where the ‘Nominate’ hitmaker slapped Sarkodie’s Manager, Angeltown.

After two years, the two Ghanaian superstars met each other in France where the cameras and voice recorders were alert on them to monitor their interactions.

Both acts earlier expressed disappointment in each other over how their misunderstanding was handled. Since then, the pair who are also high schoolmates were not on good terms.

After meeting in France for the ‘Accra In Paris’ show, Sarkodie and Stonebwoy also performed at the ‘Memphis In May’ concert in the U.S.

During Stonebwoy’s performance, Sarkodie with his manager, Angel were seen dancing to Stonebwoy’s performance.

The Ghanaian Dancehall star who recently inked a deal with Def Jam records emphasized that “the reality is that we are cool. There is no wahala.”

Periscope: Mother Ghana’s Lamentation

Will the E-Levy dry her falling tears?

Mother Ghana was given birth to on March 6, 1957. She was a bouncing baby girl, very beautiful with great expectation of a successful growth into a productive womanhood.

As she grew up during the First Republic, she saw a glimmer of hope of the fulfillment of her expectation.  There were ample signs of development to qualify her among developed nations. Industries began to spring up to industrialise her to give employment to her children.

Regrettably, however, alongside efforts to make her happy with development projects was a filthy ambition to let her live her whole life under one political party.  That agenda was the genesis of her woes.  This was because; most of her children loathed the idea of a one-party state. To prevent its growth, the military came out with a coup d’état on February 24, 1966. But it was business as usual, since the soldiers did not continue the industrialisation programme.

By that time Mother Ghana was just a girl of nine years old but she had started to grow lean with misrule by the soldiers till October 1, 1969 when Dr. K.A. Busia won a democratic election and exhibited some signs of seriousness to develop the country. He first ruthlessly attacked corruption but he was not allowed to show the political stuff he was made of.  On January 13, 1972 his reign was brought to an end through yet another coup d’état led by Col. I.K. Acheampong.

His “Operation Feed Yourself” programme somewhat encouraged Ghanaians to work hard to feed themselves. But, that was the only oasis in the esert. The daily groan and sighs under the weight of unemployment and underdevelopment were the lot of emaciated Mother Ghana.  That was the time “kalabule” (brute cheating) and its sister “Gyinabu” (instant cheating) were born.

The underdeveloped and its concomitant unemployment were due to the fact that the country simply had no money and the reason was not far-fetched. The tax-net seemed to be not wide enough to trap many tax-payers. Thus the coffers were perpetually dry.

Our liberators, redeemers did nothing beyond issuing decrees that did not touch development and unemployment. This accounts for the presence of numerous deplorable roads all over the country, dilapidated school buildings, situations in which school children study under trees while others sit on the floor to write.

In-between these military interventions were democratically elected governments, each of which tried its best to solve Mother Ghana’s problems. With scanty funds in our coffers, they could not do much and so Mother Ghana’s mournful tears continue to flow in torrents.

A loving Mother as she is, she cannot sit down unconcerned, against the background of the saying that “A woman’s tender care cannot cease towards the child she bears.” Certainly, she needs a savior to dry her falling tears, a savior bold and courageous enough to cling tightly to the horns of the bull, without looking back.

A savior with a genuine mission to transform beautiful but now a hag-looking Mother Ghana, to fit into the society of developed countries, no matter the efforts to keep her in the quicksand of perpetual stagnation in development.

Our democratic governments, indeed, always have the burning desire to develop the country, but alas, the “kudi” alias “agooji” is simply not there.  For how long must we continue to sigh in desperation and dejection? Must we not make efforts to get money to bring the country to the level of, at least, middle developed country?

It has been observed that, we often compare our country with others, such as Singapore. Such countries have been well developed, because the citizens did not grumble and vehemently, protest against the payment of taxes. This was because they knew that without taxes, there would be no development. They did not expect to go round other rich citizens, to beg for money with which to develop their countries.

Yes, there is comfort and generally are goodies in Aburokyire. Thus, we move Heaven and Earth, in some cases, at great risks, to travel there in other to enjoy the “windfall” there. We fail to think about how those countries got those comforts.  It was through taxes, but back home in our own country, we give the tag of “kaakaamotobi” to taxes and run away from them!

We can be likened to a pampered child, who is not allowed to do hard work at home. When the source of pampering ceases, such as the death of his indulgent parents, he is found wanting in many situations. For quite a long time, many people have escaped the payment of taxes just because those in responsible positions to enforce the payment of taxes have been derelict of duty.

There is now the urgent need for Mother Ghana to be rescued at all costs, in terms of development. This does not mean going to the IMF or the World Bank. We should end the pampering now and find money internally for this purpose for the benefit, not only of ourselves but also, future generations.  We must, indeed, avoid a situation in which future generations would say, “The generations before us were very wicked, selfish and inconsiderate. Look at the type of a country they have left us – poor development, poor infrastructure etc.” How would we feel in our graves?

The way forward

How is the government going to use the proceeds from the E-Levy to satisfy all Ghanaians? A million dollar question.  PERISCOPE suggests that: All  the Districts  in Ghana should form Committees comprising their Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District

Chief Executives (MMDCEs), Presiding Members of the various Assemblies and Traditional rulers. They should compile lists of all their needs, such as motorable roads, potable water, presentable school buildings etc. The lists would then be given to the government as a guide for it to respond to the needs without discrimination.

By the end of 2024, most of them must have been completed. This would assure the residents that the government has, indeed, kept faith with them and that the turns of others would come to pass.  The people would then realise that, after all, the E-Levy is advantageous.

John Mahama to note

Brother John Dramani Mahama is currently trying to discredit the E-Levy, so that Ghanaians would reject it.  Brother JDM, this is dangerous; it might go against the NDC, during the 2024 general elections. This is because , it has  been observed that, contrary to the belief that Ghanaians hate the E-levy for fear of bringing hardships  on them, they rather embrace it with great expectations that the E-levy would give them first -class roads, new school buildings, potable water and other needed  infrastructure.

This is accentuated by the fact that as soon as the issue of E-levy came up for discussion and communities were convinced about its benefits, they started to draw the attention of the government to their woes, such as bad roads, through frequent  demonstrations, punctuated with war songs and drumming.

Campaigning against it would, therefore annoy Ghanaians more especially, if by 2024, more places would have been proud beneficiaries of the “Asantrofi Anoma” E-levy.

Brothers and sisters, Let us shed copious tears today for the sake of our future generations, while we wait for a peaceful rest in our graves.

CERTAINLY, THE E-LEVY CAN DRY THE FALLING TEARS  OF MOTHER GHANA.

Canada MP regrets appearing in parliamentary session from toilet

Mr Ali with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

A Canadian lawmaker has apologised for appearing remotely for a parliamentary session from a toilet cubicle. Liberal MP Shafqat Ali was panned by a Conservative party lawmaker on Friday after colleagues noticed the familiar background of the building’s washroom.

“The camera was mounted on the ledge or ridge on the wall just above the back of the toilet,” a rival MP said. This is the second Liberal MP in two years to be caught in an embarrassing situation on a Zoom call.

Mr Ali, a 55-year-old former real estate dealer, was elected last year to serve for the district north-west of Toronto. The incident took place during a debate on a member’s bill in the House of Commons where several members appeared by a private video call that was only visible to their fellow MPs.

Honduras ex-President pleads not guilty in US court

Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez (m)

Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to drug charges in the United States, with his lawyer complaining that he is being held like a “prisoner of war” in a New York federal jail.

Hernandez, 53, appeared in US federal court on Tuesday with chains around his ankles and spoke through a Spanish interpreter saying he was not guilty. He was extradited to the US last month and charged with participating in a “corrupt and violent drug-trafficking conspiracy to facilitate the importation of hundreds of thousands of kilograms of cocaine into the United States”. The ex-president, who served two terms between 2014 and January 2022, has maintained that he is innocent. He lost his immunity from prosecution when he handed power over to Honduras’s first female president, Xiomara Castro, in January.

Defence lawyer Raymond Colon said on Tuesday that Hernandez was held in solitary confinement and had not been allowed to call his family. “Obviously, he’s been treated like a prisoner of war, not like every other inmate,” Colon said.

Anti-mafia prosecutor killed on Colombia honeymoon

Pecci's wife had announced on Instagram that she was pregnant

A high-profile Paraguayan prosecutor who fought against organised crime in his home country has been shot dead during his honeymoon in Colombia. Marcelo Pecci was on a beach on the idyllic tourist island of Baru when he was killed by two gunmen.

Hours before the shooting, Mr Pecci’s wife had announced on Instagram that she was pregnant.

Paraguayan President Mario Abdo Benitez described the shooting as a “cowardly murder”.

Mr Pecci’s wife, journalist Claudia Aguilera, said that they were approached by two men on a private beach before her husband was shot. She said he had not received any threats.

“Two men attacked Marcelo. They came in a small boat, or on a jet ski, the truth is I did not see well,” Ms Aguilera told the El Tiempo newspaper.

One of the assailants got out and “without a word he shot Marcelo twice, one [bullet] hit him in the face and another in the back,” she said. Paraguayan prosecutor Augusto Salas, a colleague of Mr Pecci, said that the attack appeared “typical of the [drug] mafia, so that is what I will think until the contrary is proven”, according to news agency AFP.

UK rejects EU proposals to resolve N. Ireland trade dispute

0
UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss

The United Kingdom has rejected the European Union’s proposals to resolve a standoff over post-Brexit trade rules for Northern Ireland, saying it would not shy away from taking direct action in the latest escalation between the two sides.

Striking a deal that preserved peace in Northern Ireland and protected the EU’s single market without imposing a hard land border between the British province and EU member state Ireland, or a border within the UK, was always the biggest challenge for London as it embarked on its exit from the bloc. It agreed on a protocol which instead created a customs border in the sea between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK, but now says the required bureaucracy is intolerable. London’s Conservative government has been threatening to rip up the protocol for months, raising the risk of a trade war with Europe at a time of soaring inflation and ringing alarm bells across Europe and in Washington.

Brussels offered to ease customs checks in October last year, but British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss on Wednesday said this failed to address the core problem, “and in some cases would take us backward”.
