There is no record label in Ghana’ -Kwabena Kwabena

Kwabena Kwabena

Ghana can brag about having gold, cocoa, and exceptional music talents like Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Gyakie, Efya among others but it can’t brag about having a record label in the eyes of Kwabena Kwabena. According to the Ghanaian singer, despite the existence of Lynx Entertainment, Black Avenue Music, Sarkcess Music, Zylofon Music, among others, he sees no record label in Ghana.

Detailing his what has influenced his assertion, the ‘Adult Music’ hitmaker said the practice of some “record labels” in the country does not fall in line with what constitutes a record label globally.

Speaking on Hitz FM, Kwabena Kwabena was further queried about Lynx Entertainment and he said: “it’s someone’s business, I wouldn’t want to comment on that”.

However, he insisted that “what actually constitutes a record label there is none in Ghana. Record labels see talent, know the potential of the talent, build and groom the talent and make sure they get to the top, else they won’t touch it [the talent”.

According to the ‘Tokro’ singer, “Record labels invest for a period of about five years to see their returns”.

Sharing his thoughts about the music business in Ghana, Kwabena Kwabena said unlike the other parts of the world where record labels provide everything that will make its signed artists feel at ease, the opposite happens in Ghana.

“People do music here like buy and sell… like selling tomatoes for a profit. That is not music and record label. Here people come out saying I have bought him that and all that, if you are a record label, you can invest in an artiste and gain nothing, and you don’t come screaming because you are a record label,” he lamented.

We deserve apology; Western Region Creative Arts players mad at Tourism Minister

0
The current state of the Centre for National Culture in Sekondi-Takoradi

At a stakeholder engagement with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture in Takoradi, the Minister, Dr. Awal Mohammed on June, 5, 2021 promised the people of Sekondi-Takoradi that, within a year, the deserted 32-year-old Centre for National Culture (CNC) at Sekondi will have a facelift to an international standard.

Dr. Awal’s one-year promise fell on June 5, 2022 but the Creative Arts Players in Western Region are yet to see any renovation of the CNC. This has infuriated the stakeholders in the Western Region who have shared their sentiments with The Chronicle.

Speaking to the Business Manager of Empire FM, Enoch Asare popularly known as Feeling Daddy, he stated that; “On our entertainment show, one of our disc jockeys, Magic George said the one year promise given by the Minister is not realistic and he cannot do it. At a point, I also started believing it that it cannot be done. He just raised our hopes and did nothing. I think we deserve apology for his failed promise.”

In his assertion, the Manager for Connect FM in Takoradi, Ransford Nana OseiAsare said; “If you make a promise, we expect that even if you’re unable to keep it, communicate it as to why it’s delayed or unable to materialize. I think this CNC issues has dragged for far too long and need to be looked it. The impression is that, the creative arts is taken for granted because this has lingered on for far too long before the regional minister even took over office.”

Macall Mensah who is the Programmes Manager of Beach FM also added that; “The minister was under no compulsion to say anything about the construction of the theatre if there was nothing in the offing. It is painful to learn that there has been no new development since the Hon. Minister made the promise. It cannot be emphasized enough the ease the theatre will bring to event organization in the region.More importantly is that, the theatre can easily pay for monies spent on it, considering the number of events that will be organized there. We shall continue to request for this government to make good of their promise and complete the Western Regional Centre for National Culture.”

“From the onset, I knew they were lies; these were things said to make the creative arts players feel they are also part of those he thinks about. Looking at the dilapidated nature of the CNC, the one year was not feasible, he said it to tickle us. They only pay attention to tourism and nothing else,” YoofiEyeson, an Entertainment Show host of Spice FM also stated.

“Has he even made efforts to come to the city to check how far things are going? We’ve even had two Creative Arts Ministers from the Region who didn’t even pay attention to the CNC and someone who doesn’t have any attachment to the region,” Mr. Eyeson added.

“It was a great joy for all stakeholders in the creative art industry in the Western Region when the Honorable Minister made that statement of getting our CNC to international standard. As a region that can’t boast of even one proper large event auditorium, this came as good news, although most of the stakeholders had huge doubt of it happening. Hold and behold, it’s been a year and not even a brush of paint has touched the wall. A venue that when made better can fetch the country some good money. This is a total disappointment and shame on the minister and his ministry. But I still comeback to say that industry players in Western Region are not angry enough. We still look like a joke to them. This is not something we are letting go. We will do everything possible to make sure the Western Regional Centre for National” AtoKwaminaOtoo, an Entertainment host of Connect FM added.

Efforts to reach the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister proved futile, as calls to his number were not answered and those close to him refused to respond to the story.

John Kerry commits to look into case of missing British journalist

John Kerry

The US climate envoy John Kerry has committed to pursuing the facts behind the disappearance of a veteran Guardian contributor and a celebrated Indigenous expert in the Brazilian Amazon.

Dom Phillips and Bruno Araújo Pereira were last seen on Sunday morning travelling by boat, illegal loggers, drug traffickers and security forces.
Kerry, a former US secretary of state, appears shocked at details of the case recounted by the Brazilian Indigenous leader Sonia Guajajara in a WhatsApp video of the encounter seen by the Guardian.
The exchange happened at a ceremony on Tuesday honouring Time magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2022, one of whom was Guajajara.
However, in a second WhatsApp video from the event, Guajajara said: “Unfortunately, I can’t even celebrate or commemorate being on this list because I have to lament … the disappearance of Indigenous activist Bruno and journalist Dom Phillips who have vanished, simply vanished, and no one knows where they are.

China accuses Australia and Canada of ‘disinformation’ over jet encounters

A fighter jet from Chinese Navy

Beijing has accused Australia and Canada of “spreading disinformation” over allegedly dangerous manoeuvres by Chinese military pilots in international airspace.

China also warned Australia to stop “provocations” or face “serious consequences” after the Albanese government said a Chinese jet intercepted an RAAF plane in a dangerous manoeuvre.

A day earlier Justin Trudeau hit out at “irresponsible and provocative” actions by Beijing’s air force after Canadian aircraft deployed in Japan narrowly avoided a collision with Chinese jets late last month.

The incident has again heightened tensions between Beijing and Ottawa, just as a lengthy crisis over Canada’s 2018 arrest of a Chinese tech executive subsides.

China responded to the Canadian prime minister’s comments by calling on Canada to “respect the facts [and] stop spreading disinformation”.

The Canadian aircraft were deployed in Japan for a multinational effort to enforce United Nations sanctions against North Korea over its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programmes.

ECOWAS unhappy with Mali’s 24-month transition decision

Mali’s military government

The Mali representative’s empty seat is seen in Accra, Ghana, on September 16, 2021, at an ECOWAS meeting on the political situation in Guinea. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) says it regrets a decision by Mali’s interim government to delay the return to civilian rule by 24 months while negotiations between the two sides were ongoing.

Mali’s military government, which first came to power in an August 2020 coup, issued a decree on Monday fixing the 24-month timetable, to be counted from March 2022.

“ECOWAS regrets that while negotiations are still ongoing to reach a consensus, the Malian authorities took this decision on the transition,” the bloc said in a late Monday statement.

It said an ECOWAS negotiator would continue to engage Malian authorities to reach a “mutually agreed timeline”.

The 15-member regional bloc has been pushing for a shorter extension of 16 months at most.

In January, ECOWAS had imposed stiff sanctions after the military rulers said they would not organise democratic elections the following month as initially planned.

Heads of state from ECOWAS member countries met recently in Ghana, where they agreed not to lift sanctions against Mali unless the government proposes a shorter transition.

Iran dismantles nuclear monitoring cameras after IAEA censure

Iran's nuclear plant

Iran has turned off a number of cameras installed by the global nuclear watchdog after Western powers introduced a resolution to censure it. The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) announced on Wednesday that it has turned off the Online Enrichment Monitor (OLEM) and flowmeter system of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at an unidentified nuclear site.

All the dismantled monitoring systems were installed voluntarily and beyond the framework of the safeguards agreement with the IAEA, the AEOI said. The AEOI statement added that more than 80 percent of existing IAEA cameras are covered by the safeguards agreement and therefore remain in place and operational.

The organisation said the IAEA had been informed of the move, which appears to have been implemented on Wednesday.

Belgian King returns looted mask to DR Congo

President Félix Tshisekedi accepted the return of the Kakungu mask

King Philippe has handed over to the Democratic Republic of Congo the first of some 84,000 artefacts looted during the colonial era that Belgium has agreed to return. It is a mask, called Kakungu, that was previously exhibited at Belgium’s Royal Museum for Central Africa.

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde are on a visit to DR Congo at the invitation of President Félix Tshisekedi. Belgium’s colonial record in DR Congo was one of the most brutal in Africa.

The newly returned mask was used during healing ceremonies by the Suku community, from the south-west of the country.

It was bought by an art dealer 70 years ago before being exhibited at the Belgian museum.

King Phillipe said the object was on “indefinite loan” to DR Congo.

“I wanted, during our visit at the National Museum and in your presence, to return to you this exceptional work in order to allow Congolese to discover and admire it,” the king said.

“It marks the symbolic beginning of the reinforcement of the cultural collaboration between Belgium and Congo,” he continued.

Many more artefacts are to be returned from the Royal Museum for Central Africa, nearly 70% of whose art objects were seized during the colonial period.

One dead, others hurt as car drives into pedestrians in Berlin

The accident scene after the car drove into the crowd

One person has been killed and at least a dozen more injured after a car drove into a crowd on a busy Berlin street.

Emergency officials say it is unclear whether the incident, which happened at around 10:30 local time (08:30 GMT), was intentional or an accident.

A police spokesperson told reporters that the driver, a 29-year-old man, was arrested at the scene.

The incident took place in the heart of western Berlin, on one of its busiest shopping streets.

Police added that the driver, who has dual German and Armenian citizenship and lives in Berlin, had initially been apprehended by passers-by.

Reports say the vehicle veered off the street and mounted the pavement before crashing into a shop front.

Images from the scene show a silver Renault Clio crashed through a display window in a cosmetics shop. There are also pictures of what appears to be a body, covered in blankets, in the middle of the road.

Around 130 emergency workers are at the scene according to the Berlin police service.

Berlin’s Mayor Franziska Giffey wrote on Twitter that she has been “deeply affected by this incident” and told residents that “police are working flat out to clarify the matter”.

Good nutrition, home remedies best for measles treatment

0
A measles infested child

The dry season is here again. Already there have been pockets of reported cases of measles in most homes across the country. Studies have shown that dry air has four main effects on the human body. Breathing dry air is a potential health hazard which can cause such respiratory ailments as asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, and nosebleeds, or general dehydration since body fluids are depleted during respiration.

Diseases such as measles occur during dry weather. Measles, respiratory and highly infectious disease is caused by a virus known as rubeola. Measles virus normally grows in the cells that line the back of the throat and lungs.  The illness does not select, it can attack anyone, ranging from adult men and women to children.

However, statistics show that the disease is mainly common among children. Studies have shown that children below 12 months are the most vulnerable ones. Measles can be classified as one of the most undesired and discomforting as well as life threatening illness.

Measles is often a serious disease that can lead to complications such as ear infections, pneumonia and swelling of the brain. Sometimes measles can be fatal or lead to permanent brain damage.  Measles during pregnancy can cause miscarriage, premature labor and low birth weight in babies.  Symptoms are fever, weakness, loss of appetite, red, sore, watery eyes and an inability to tolerate light, blocked or runny nose, dry cough, sore throat and swollen neck glands.

Are you a parent? Do you know that nutrition is a very instrumental factor as far as measles treatment is concern?

Experts say one needs to accompany a good diet with proper muscle relaxation accompanied by adequate sleep.

Unfortunately, there is no specific treatment available for measles other than relieving the symptoms. Experts warn that preventing it by immunization is very important.  However, there recognized measles home remedies such as lemon and water. Lemon and water have been adjudged as one of the best treatment for measles.

Juice from at least two lemon and diluted with at least 30 milliliters of water will help your child. Other home treatment include; Honey/ licorice. Obtain at least half table spoon of honey and half table spoon of licorice.   Come up with a mixture of the two ingredients by combining them in a glass.  Have the mixture well stirred to obtain a good combination.  Consume a glass of the mixture ever day in order to experience quick recovery.

Turmeric roots/ honey:  Gather two to three gourd leaves; a small cup of honey; and a tea spoon of powdered turmeric roots. Have the three ingredients mixed in a spacious cup and stir to obtain a good mixture.  Consume the mixture at least once a day for effective results.

Tamarind/ turmeric: Obtain a sample of tamarind and a sample of turmeric roots. Have the two substances grinded to form a paste. Consume the paste in amounts of three to 400 grams daily in order to experience promising results.

Hon Atta Akyea, such comments will not help the Veep’s case (2)

0
Samuel Atta Akyea

The New Patriotic Party is directly linked to the United Party. On that fateful day, on October 13, 1957 it was Busia who brought National Liberation Movement (NLM) to the table; Dombo brought Northern People’s Party (NPP); S.G. Antor brought the Togoland Congress (TC); Modesto Apaloo brought the Anlo Youth Association (AYA); Attoh Okine and Attoh Quarshie brought the Ga Shifimokpee; Bankole Awooner Renner brought the Muslim Association Party (MAP). Bankole was born in Elmina in 1898 and converted to Islam in 1942. He parted ways with Nkrumah’s CPP and formed MAP.

This was how the United Party came to be formed and if indeed the NPP wants to honour the fine gentlemen who founded this tradition then it will be fair to mention all the names of those political party leaders. So, at best, since these leaders decided on the name United Party, then the tradition should be the UP Tradition.

By the way, where from the name Danquah in the tradition? With respect, the UGCC was co-founded by Paa Grant and J.B. Danquah on August 4, 1947. The UGCC had a life span of less than five years and this according to Prof. Adu Boahen, in his book, “GHANA: Evolution and Change in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries,” it had to do with elitism. The youth and grassroot members of the party who felt always being looked down upon by the elite leadership, left with Nkrumah. In the first elections, which took place in 1951, the UGCC won only three seats out of the thirty-eight seats, J.B. Danquah, in Akim Abuakwa Central, William Ofori-Atta (Paa Willie) in Akim Abuakwa West and Gerald Otto Awuma in Akpini-Asogli. The UGCC closed shop and Danquah went on to Co-Found the Ghana Congress Party. In 1954, he and Paa Willie lost their Akim Abuakwa seats. K.A. Busia was the only parliamentary candidate of the Ghana Congress Party who won his seat in Wenchi East, then in Ashanti region.

In 1956, Busia was with NLM and became leader of the Opposition in Parliament. Even though the Dombo’s led-NPP won more seats than the Busia-led NLM, Dombo ceded the leadership of the Opposition to Busia. By popular votes, the NLM had more votes than the NPP and Dombo felt it was only proper to make Busia the leader of the Opposition.

The fact is that even though the Ashanti region was the most populous, for political reasons it was given only twenty constituencies coming fourth after Western (22); Eastern (23) and Northern (26). This was one of the reasons, which gave birth to the National Liberation Movement.

Today, the Muslims, the Ewes, the Northerners and the Gas who were traditional members of the UP, have gone to become the backbone of the NDC. If the NPP will continue with this Danquah-Busia-Dombo Tradition thing, it will be very obvious that descendants of the Muslim Association Party, Ga Shifimokpee, Togoland Congress, Anlo Youth Association and a large section of the Northern People’s Party will always feel neglected and they will find NPP, unattractive.

Political history has full evidence that J.B. Danquah played no role in the formation of the United Party. Bringing in his name as part of the tradition, is not right, especially when other important political leaders, have their names left out and are totally forgotten.

If Akanization of NPP is a worry to members like Hon Atta Akyea, then this is what they have to worry about. The name Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition which was at first the Danquah-Busia tradition is not only wrong, but it also side lines other important ethnic groups who stood together to bring the United Party and its tradition into existence.

The strong Akan support base is not the problem, in fact Akans must be celebrated, after all, they are also well-meaning Ghanaians.

The third point is related to the first in a way. Atta Akyea is saying there is the need to pick the Vice President as flag bearer because he learned under the driver (the president) and so could drive (govern) the vehicle (nation) better. He added that the vice has been sixteen years (actually will be sixteen by 2024) as a mate under the president. He added the eight years when NPP was in political wilderness, so how could he impute experience here? A driver who just got his driver’s license but without a vehicle to drive cannot have any experience to impart on his mate.

Or someone who completes education and sits home for five years without a job cannot qualify as someone with the job experience, irrespective of the grades he had. This is what Hon. Atta Akyea must know and accept.

Is Hon. Atta Akyea suggesting a convention that from henceforth, NPP should pick only vice-presidents to succeed presidents as flag bearers? What happens if a president and his vice, perform so abysmally that NPP got only one term and goes back into opposition? Will the next Congress be adamant to pick the same poor performing president as flag bearer who in turn will pick his equally poor performing vice as running mate? Is this something for Congress to decide?

Hon Atta Akyea summarised what he wanted to say, by suggesting a new convention. The Vice President as flag bearer and Alan Kyerematen as running mate, something which is seriously being considered by the Bawumia camp.

This should be something that should be amicably discussed before Congress and if the Party decides some kind of arrangement like this, then Congress must first go ahead and choose which of the two should be flag bearer and the other gets picked as running mate.

Decision of Congress is what is paramount, here, because it is only Congress that should decide who should be flag bearer.

The three suggestions made by my friend who is learned, would rather create confusion and division in the party. It is like this thing about it is Dombo’s turn. Even as I do not believe in the tradition of the NPP being called Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition, to suggest it is the turn of a Dombo, falls flat as events of recent history portray.

The first flag bearer of the NPP was a Danquah (AduBoahen); the second was a Busia (J.A. Kufuor). So why was the third not a Dombo as in Aliu Mahama but rather the party went back for a Danquah? NPP Congress will always pick the one deemed fit to lead the party. And one thing, Dombo was a Catholic and not a Muslim.

I only plead with the National Executive Council of the NPP not to do anything to jeopardise the chances of the Party in the 2024 General Elections. Party members must be encouraged to only talk about the positive sides of their favourites and not attempt to twist history or come out with suggestions that will rather provoke anger and passion leading to confusion and conflicts in the Party.

Hon. Daniel Dugan.
