Code Nation 1957: Birthing Wells of Hope

0

Water is life. However, that is not the case for folks living in many rural areas in Ghana. Tsavanya in the Volta Region and Mpakandan in the Eastern Region are classic examples. People in Tsavanya rely on a stream far from the village as their major source of water. The downside is, that the stream is muddy and unhygienic for use.

Taking this into account, will Ghana be able to fulfill United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal Six (6) by the year 2030?

This is a great question to ponder over. In as much as, it is the responsibility of the government through the Ghana Water Corporation Limited (GWCL), to provide clean water for all and sundry and in every nook and cranny of the country, this seems far from the reality.

What we need is a united front to make government institutions aware of such ordeals, so they come to our aid. However, if they are nonchalant, we cannot wait on them forever. We need to come together and tailor solutions to mitigate such problems.

An organisation committing to this resolveis Code Nation 1957. Code Nation 1957 is a prestigious youth movement in Ghana founded by David Nii Adjaye. Code57‘s vision is to be the best system for raising young leaders in nation-building and its mission is to empower, create platforms and opportunities for young people for nation-building.

David Nii Adjaye is an ardent youth advocate. He believes the youth are custodians of mother Ghana and should never settle for less. Rather, they should put up a fight, believing unwaveringly that things will change in our nation. In this regard, he has raised and is willing to raise young leaders with the desire to better the impoverished systems in the country.

Code57 in recent times has taken a keen interest in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 6, which focuses on clean water and sanitation. Siblings Keeper Foundation and the Social Intervention Wing of Code57, spearheaded by Nana Boateng, provided Tsavanya (Volta Region) and Mpakandan (Eastern Region) with treated borehole water. The bliss of joy on the faces of residents is priceless. One of them in an extremely joyous yet tearful tone stated, “for the very first time, we now have water which is treated and safe for use. Things like this matter!”

David Nii Adjaye and the family of Code57 have Ghanaians at heart and are unflinchingly determined to positively touch lives. Overtwo years, the youth of Code57 with a united front have sacrificed their time, effort, and resources to restore hope to people in various communities. This shows change is possible if we put our minds to it.

In our own small ways, let us be agents of the change we desire. Let us serve as a helping hand to humanity. Let us birth wells of hope. By doing so, we are building the capacity to champion nation-building!

Six children, aged between five and 12 years, have tested positive for Covid-19 in the Hohoe Municipality. Five of the children were treated and discharged with a six-year-old, a transported case, currently responding to treatment.

Between January and August this year, 86 staff of the Hohoe Municipal Hospital also tested positive for the disease.A monthly breakdown of the coronavirus statistics in the Municipality revealed that 2,458 samples were tested from January to August 2021.

Out of the samples, 459 tested positive, 34 active cases while four people succumbed to the virus. Mr. Philip Nani-Tome, Hohoe Municipal Disease Control Officer, said during a Public Health Emergency Management Committee meeting that people in the Municipality no longer wore face masks.

He said social distancing was not being adhered to, hand washing equipment no longer in use, government facilities no longer observing protocols and the media being quiet on education.

Mr. Nani-Tome recommended that the Hohoe Municipal Assembly should enforce its bye-laws on the adherence to coronavirus protocols. He also appealed for financial support to purchase fuel to carry out vigorous contact tracing and health promotion.

The Officer revealed that the Municipality had not received the second doses for people who took jabs of the first doses of the AstraZeneca covid vaccines, adding that most people were unwilling to be vaccinated.

He said the Municipality needed more Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for health workers. The officer urged churches to adhere to the stipulated two-hour service time and also ensure adherence to the protocols.

Mr. Nani-Tome said challenges faced with managing Covid-19 cases included no means of transport of items to the treatment Centre. He also mentioned no reimbursement to the hospital, which was spending hugely on the management of the pandemic, no fridge to store medication and no means of carrying out effective home management.

Mr. Andrews Teddy Ofori, the Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), said the Municipality would provide a motorbike to support the management of cases in the Municipality. He urged the Municipal Security Committee (MUSEC) to meet and deliberate on ways to ensure adherence to safety protocols.

Mr. Ambrose Dery, Minister for the Interior

The feeding rate for prison inmates is expected to see an increase from GH¢1.80 to GH¢5.00 to ensure the right to adequate food and nutrition, Mr. Ambrose Dery, Minister for the Interior, has said.

He said the call for the increment had preceded the current government coming into power.

However, the Ministry and the Ghana Prisons Service were yet to receive approval from the Ministry of Finance.

Mr. Dery, who is also a Member of Parliament (MP) for Nandom Constituency, announced the proposed increment in Parliament, in Accra, on Wednesday.

He made the remarks in his response to a question by Mr. Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor, MP for South Dayi, on behalf of Mr. Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu, MP for Madina, on what measures were being taken to increase the feeding allocation of GH¢1.80 per day, with the view of ensuring prisoners’ right to adequate food and nutrition was in line with the Sustainable Development Goal 2, which called for Zero Hunger.

“Mr. Speaker, the Ghana Prisons Service and the Ministry have made various attempts for the upward adjustment of the feeding rate from GH¢1.80 to GH¢5.00,” he said.

Mr. Dery added that notwithstanding, the Ghana Prisons Service supplemented the inmates feeding with produce from the Prisons Farms to avert malnutrition and its related problems. Mr. Dafeamekpor further proposed a policy be implemented for prisoners to cultivate crops that would supplement their feeding.

He also urged the Interior Minister to engage with Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, the Finance Minister, ahead of the mid-year review budget to make the proposed adjustment materialise.

Sales manager convicted for theft

Court

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded a sales manager into Police custody, pending sentencing for dishonestly appropriating GHS28,000.00 belonging to his employer. Collins Mensah admitted to fraudulent breach of trust but sentence was deferred to enable him to “settle himself with the complainant.”

The Court presided over by Mr Samuel B. Acquah asked him to come back to court for his sentence on July 21, 2022. Police Inspector Daniel Danku told the Court that Thomas Dasitey, the account clerk of the (Okoampah Ernest Asare Company Limited), which deals in Ashfoam and plastic products was the complainant.

He said the accused person was the sales manager of the Teshie Tsuibleoo branch of the company. On June 26, 2022, Dasitey, the account clerk, on his routine duty of stock-taking, discovered that there were inconsistencies in the records of sales.  The Prosecution said Dasitey then questioned the accused on the findings but did not receive any reasonable response.

Inspector Danku said the account clerk further established after a preliminary observation that about GHS 28,000 could not be accounted for in goods and cash.  He said with the consent of the CEO of the Company, Dasitey reported the matter to the Police which led to the arrest of the accused. During interrogation, the accused admitted that he took money out of sales amounting to GHS28,000.00 but could not tell what he used it for.

The Court heard that the accused person was charged with the offence and brought before the Court. Meanwhile, efforts were afoot to determine the exact amount of money dishonestly appropriated by the accused person, the Court heard.  GNA

Climate Crisis: Awareness, early warning systems crucial

0
Professor Daouda Kone

Ghana and her African peers urgently need to bridge the knowledge gap and establish an effective early warning system on impacts of climate crisis.

This is the surest way to live with climate crisis impacts manifesting in the form of rising sea levels, flooding, drought and increased temperature, Professor Daouda Kone, Director, Capacity Building Department of West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL), has said.

“I am sure that today, the heavy rain has caused flooding, and displaced people. Some were caught unaware. If there was a good early warning system, people would have known what time was ideal to move out to work and avoid the flood,” he said.

“The same warning system will inform farmers to know that it will rain and that will inform them to go ahead and sow seeds or delay the application of fertilizer to avoid losses,” he noted.

Prof Kone said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of an event to open a three-day training programme for West African Researchers, organised by the Science and Technology Policy Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (STEPRI-CSIR).

The training, sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research seeks to strengthen the capacity of WASCAL’s scientific coordinators in policy brief development for increased engagement in policy processes and advocacy.

The participants after the training will also train students pursuing climate change related topics in master and doctorate to enable them to develop policy briefs for communities in their respective countries. Prof Kone said the knowledge gap was huge and would require training for technical people to provide the right information to practitioners to effectively communicate to the public.

He urged African Governments to invest in technologies such as Automatic Weather stations to collect climate data to make predictions and modeling to furnish local communities with accurate information to make daily decisions.

Dr. Portia Adade Williams, a Research Fellow at STEPRI-CSIR, stated that although climate change posed risks to human health, ecosystems, and economic development, it offered opportunities.

She said climate policies were intended to reduce the risks of climate change while at the same time taking advantage of the opportunities it presented.  Dr. Williams noted that adapting to the potential effects of climate change was a complex and ongoing process, which required the attention and actions of individuals, communities, governments and international agencies.
